One of those weeks
I was going to call this article Hotel California Celtic Supporters Club, but events forced my hand. They say things happen in threes and it certainly did for me. Friday night brought a shattered beyond using phone screen, Tuesday brought the double whammy. Not only did my garden hose nozzle blow out from built up water pressure and high temperatures super heating the stupidly colored black hose which is a heat magnet (forgot to turn the spigot off and empty hose or it would have been fine as usual), but on Monday evening my better half noticed and pointed out I had a tire looking low on air.
Driving to work Tuesday morning it was noticeable so a mental note was made to stop after work at the very first air pump. It was very low verging on flat by this stage, but we are talking 3 miles to the pump and I drove slowly. I start filling it up and the car is visibly lifting, thank goodness I’m thinking when at around 20lbs of pressure the side of the tire facing me starts forming a bubble coming my way rapidly. Just as I had gotten sideways out of the radius, BOOM!
Only 40k miles on it, the shredded remains won’t be visiting asphalt again.
It’s just one of those weeks folks, you’ve had them, of course you have, we all have. And it will happen again however there’s usually ways to negate issues arising in the first place. The new phone is sturdier with an excellent protective case, the next hose nozzle will be metal (shouldn’t blow out under pressure) rather than plastic plus I’ll double check the spigot is off, the new tire won’t be allowed to get so low in future. All in all I shall be forking out a few bucks, but will take the lessons from all three, and try to put ‘one of those weeks’ behind me.
That’s just life, sought out or not we have everyday problems to deal with. And what is one of our reliefs from such burdens but sport, in particular football, in particular our beloved Glasgow Celtic Football Club, the Pride of Ireland!
This week our particular club shall undergo its own ‘one of those weeks’, star assets coveted, bid upon, supporter and manager expectations to meet, and not only this season hangs upon their collective response but the next few as what comes in now (or not) shall become a piece of a much larger jigsaw puzzle.
Hence the potential Hotel California name, because as the old song says, this could be heaven or this could be hell.
We are faced with the prospect of losing up to 5 players in a 7 day period (Matt, Reo, Kelly, Anderson, Lagerbielke), one of whom needs two replacements according to the gaffer, but alongside that we have a very slow moving transfer committee/board/Nicholson and MacKay who might just feel smug and sheltered having broken the clubs outgoing fee record.
They take forever to capture a signature, and have now ‘seemingly’ left themselves in the position of needing several signings rapidly, while dealing with outgoing.
We are in Hotel California territory, this goes one way or the other.
I’ll give my opinion as usual, stick my head above the parapet and leave my thoughts out there to be shot at, and I assure all they are my thoughts alone and no author on this site has been ‘got at’, as if we were so important.
Heaven not hell.
My rationale?
For starters all our signings have been Brendan’s targets, players he wants not players foisted upon him. If it’s happened so far, chances are that’s unlikely to change.
All of those links, all of those sounding-outs, some would have been preliminary and that’s what’s leaked, but some will be ascertaining the fee and leaving it on the back burner to maybe make a move later or hijack a move last minute.
We approach last minute territory, and five departures alongside the biscuit tin not even being opened yet when one takes into account the 2024 outgoing fee’s, leaves the door open for a splurge, and being calculated he didn’t say Matt needs two replacements, rather have a 6 million player over three 2 million players by accident.
I look at the players we are linked with and their price tag plus their wages, I’m happy with them all.
I don’t want to lose Reo, nor Matt, BUT if both or one only decide to try elsewhere, at this moment the very best we can do is provide players that fit into Brendan’s vision. We’ve done that 4 times though admittedly slowly, picking up the pace when the desired fee is known shouldn’t be a major hurdle in theory unless haggling is involved. And that’s where the club’s finances come into it.
It used to be the Man United tax, now it’s the Celtic tax. As has been mentioned on the blog, a bulging bank account could well see clubs ask for top dollar, but as we’ve all just witnessed, some clubs aren’t for playing games, simply put a price on their player and say reach it or hit the road Jack.
In many cases, we already know that price via initial enquiries.
We know Brendan prefers English speakers for ease of communication, his man management skills through a common tongue, nothing wrong with that. By the way, I heard Matt’s old national boss thought speaking Danish in the dressing room was essential, the language barrier goes both ways. But I’d expect mostly English speakers to arrive from here on in.
What do I expect from here on in? Well it certainly looks like the boss won the big power struggle and is getting backed, so just more of the same really.
An experienced here and now player in the middle alongside the new develop and sell player, the next Matt. Last season I scoffed at the link with Rieder for 10 plus million, this season, after the ‘rather have a 6 million player’ statement I’m not so dismissive at players with high fees, especially high fees that we obtain an option upon ala Odsonne. So I’m expecting a mix of permanently signed plus loans with high trigger fees to purchase. One thing that’s priceless are those European nights and I hate to say it but derby games, whomever signs on loan (with an option to buy) has 6 guaranteed games of the best atmosphere football has to offer. I’ve yet to see a loanee who doesn’t want to return and sign up for the Paradise experience.
From next season that means qualifiers, signing players now to be fully settled by then makes complete sense, hence the loan to buy scenario.
I’ve no problem with that providing they play well enough to force the question and most do. We must worry about qualifiers and dropping into the UEFA Cup next year, revenue is uncertain to a point, but one thing that’s never uncertain is supporters ambition for their club of choice.
We have reached the stage of no excuses for that other left back etc, but we would understand trimming the squad. If 5 go out, I’m not asking for five in, I’m asking for three of quality. This window, with these numerous departures either already happened or will happen, is Brendan’s biggest opportunity to put his stamp on the squad.
So far, his two outfield signings won us the double, the between the sticks bhoys have that locked down long term.
If Matt goes today or tomorrow or this week, we still have time to replace him, same as the others.
So far everything is going to plan, but we’ve just pulled into the Hotel California parking lot for the rest of the window (no flat tire) ready to check-in.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.
⭐️👏☘️👍🍾
That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.

Thought provoking article, as per.😊
I am nowhere near as sanguine as you are, mate. Quite the opposite in fact. Nicholson and Mackay are as active as arthritic sloths, and have ably demonstrated that over the last 3 grindingly slow months. They do not have the background, experience, or connections to be deft, nimble and agile in the market, and they have now backed themselves into a corner, getting tighter by the day. I have zero confidence that they can pull in 2 midfielders, a left back, center back and striker in the time available. That’s getting a player every 2 days!
If I can use your analogy of pulling into the gas station, feeling relief that you made it, then have the situation blow up in your face, that’s exactly what our substitute recruitment team now risk in the next 10 days. How many players have they ‘kept tabs on’, ‘monitored’, ‘enquired about’, only to find out players, agents and clubs got fed up waiting, and the player is no longer available? It is counter intuitive that Brendan’s targets would still be on the market, when he knew who he wanted back in May. At this stage, we are almost certainly near the bottom of the manager’s preferred options, because of the Celtic Board’s bizarre obsession with not spending a bean, or Mr. McCawber like paranoia about never spending a red cent more than we take in on transfers.
Just say for the sake of argument that months ago, we entered into pre-agreements with clubs that we would take players on loan with an option to buy, but would not consummate these deals until the last week if August. What would that tell you about the quality of these players, if that was their only option? If we have no agreements in place, we are starting from scratch, in a state of panic, and probably up shit creek without a paddle.
Alternatively, the Board have told Brendan, “That’s yer lot, just coach them up.” Would anyone be surprised?
Makes me want to scweam and scweam and scweam.🤣

As someone on here eloquently said about Celtic
” You can check out, but you never leave”.
Never a truer word said.
Excellent article again Mahe!
That’s a very unfortunate Treble mate!
Lets hope we’re all singing “There’s a new kid in town” every day for the next 5 days – although it’s more likely to be “There’s going to be a heartache tonight” if we lose both Matt and Hatate!
BTW if you’re all wondering why a Weegie is texting at this time it’s because I’m stuck on the runway at Glasgow Airport as our 6.20 flight to Kefalonia has been delayed until at least 7 due to bad weather in Greece!
WTF – I’m supposed to be escaping this shitey weather!
🙄
Good morning, friends.
Thanks for the read, Mahe and whilst I dont quite have the Peaceful, Easy Feeling around our transfer dealings I’m not panicking yet. I’ll continue to Take It Easy for the remaining 9 days of the window as what good has worrying ever done!
And the good news for Billy Bhoy was his flight was airborne at 7:08 👍
BILLYBHOY
Happy holidays, mate. You gonna miss the derby match?
“… the best atmosphere football has to offer”
Europe yes.
Us and them, no.
after VOJVODINA😎I was also at the dukla prague game at parkhead, note I said parkhead not celtic park, cyber pint if you can tell me the score and the scorers??
M Nicholson is very highly compensated for his job title.
Payscale incredibly high for Scottish football.
And for someone so handsomely paid he is relatively invisible to the support that put their hard earned cash into Celtic plc.
Why????
Is it because he is only a frontman for DD and PL and expected to take the flak for his puppeteers?
In fairness to guy who doesn’t engage with support can someone else enlighten me on the job he actually does for such an enormous salary?
I’m screwed for a clever wee Eagles pun,as I was never a fan. But INIQUITOUS IV got my day off to a bloody marvellous start with his Mr Micawber analogy,as I’d planned to be using that in tomorrow’s article!
There’s a great trove of puns available from Dickens but I’ll save you all from having to read them at the moment.
Mahe
Welcome to life in the slow lane.
Slightly different from 20 years ago but the result is the same.
Support underwhelmed at our efforts to deliver improved performance levels.
Squad development — everything points to us selling before we buy anyone.
Incredible place to be with our resources / revenue streams but that is what second rate delivers.
Player trading at best when we are in the position to invest in our squad.
Why are we hoarding cash?
Shouts low energy / low ability management.
Unless PL is trying to pull a stroke on DD and fund a new main stand.
Roughcut numbers suggest that LA / OH-g / BL / SH out equals PB / AI coming in.
Give or take what we got from DT. Plus we have RV out the door and DK putting on his coat.
Again player trading at best.
Games getting played in the club — willie waving must be close to an Olympic sport at P/head.
I fear people are having delusions of adequacy — things are getting very complex.
On past evidence delivery is not guaranteed.
10 days to go and we still need a minimum of a LB and a left CB.
SW is far too close to starting and we are thin at RB.
If MOR and RH go then we will need a full re-building of the MF.
We have some of the players locally but we need to find and integrate some quality.
Pretty tough gig even if we have Dundee to help out.
The risk is snowballing.
It was never this hard for AP.
‘I can’t tell you why’ we leave everything to the last minute but let’s hope the desperados come to their senses and aren’t pouring over agents punts in 9 days time.
Enjoy your holiday Billy Bhoy. Was in Kefalonia last September and really enjoyed it

An article in The Herald outlining some of the reasons why Scottish football is pish.
It will surprise no-one to learn the report found the failings to be at board level.
It infuriates me to think of the wasted opportunity this past 12 years has been.
“Celtic have been crowned the best-run club in Britain as they Scottish champions saw off competition from English Premier League heavyweights.
The Fair Game Index have declared that Celtic have earned the title of of most-well run club after carrying out a comparison of areas including fan and community engagement, equality and ethical standards and financial sustainability. Tottenham Hotspur rank in second – while Hearts sit in third spot. Manchester United and Hibs round out the top five of the index.”
The bit that caught my eye was fan engagement, in what manner? The CEO doesn’t open his mouth and the AGM is a farce!

Lets face facts. This board would have sold the Lisbon Lions before Lisbon.
–‐—————————————————————
And they’d have sold Dalglish, McStay, McGrain and Petrov after 2/3 seasons.
Probably wouldn’t have signed the 25 year old Henrik Larsson (no sell on value) and most certainly wouldn’t have signed 33 year old L’ubomír Moravčík (no sell on value).
I think we need to realise that stronger Managers dictate signing policy – especially at the beginning when they hold the aces. Every time we have had one, we’ve operated well.
Wim; DrJo; MON ( years 1-3); AP( year1) BR ( year 1&2) perfect examples this post McCann ownership model. Weaker or weakened managers have had a dozen projects foisted upon them including most of the above..
BR currently holds every ace. I’m confident he is in control of all coming and goings. And, whilst not ideal to be going into final week of the window without everything tied up, it is the nature of the market we are trying now to operate in.
This is his only real big chance to get what he wants ..unless he conquers Europe. He will know this too.
Fan
You are correct, Nicholson is a front man for PL and DD
Until that changes , we are never going to move on and modernise as a club

Best run club in great Britain?
Is there a trophy for that?
Kyogo to Man city?
Seriously?
Text from a mate.
MM,
Why are we hoarding cash?
It’s as big a mystery as you asking that very question almost every day on here.
As none of us have a clue, it would seem pointless bringing it up constantly.
We all know what the average hun moron thinks we are accumulating money for ..
It’s the sick c@nts favourite subject!

Apologies for record link.
Bad things come in 3s you say Mahe?
We attract players with the carrot of developing them and giving them the opportunity of moving to better leagues on much higher wages.
It’s not beyond the realms of possibility given the speculation that premiership offers for O’riley hatate and kyogo all land at same time esp after our preseason tour. If so what do we do. Refuse one or two of them? We wont get the best out of frustrated unhappy players.
My bum is squeaking at a fair range of decibels
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester City have held initial talks with Celtic over a deal for Kyogo Furuhashi. The 29-year-old missed Celtic’s 3-1 win over Hibs following a knock to his shoulder but now, it appears that the hitman is wanted by Pep Guardiola’s City
Shirley they will not let Mat, Reo & Kyogo leave – will they🤔😕😮
Best run
Club/ Bank in Britain CSCLCT, thanks.
I don’t know what to make of that.
I can’t say I’m not surprised though.
I thought the wee man might be considered injury prone.
I’ve no doubt he has the ability.
Still, even with all the talk, no one has left ..yet!
Selling our best players
The one thing we can’t do anything about ..

Mahe – Yer fair gawn yer dinger the noo!
Andrew Donaldson’s 1911 Celtic contract is the oldest piece of Celtic memorabilia that I have. I got it because it was signed by Willie Maley. Andrew Donaldson only lasted one year playing for Celtic. The other signature came from the ex Celtic player and director James Kelly. Later on there would be a picture on Celtic Wiki of both Maley and Kelly assisting ex Celtic player Willie Angus VC around Celtic Park, Willie Angus lost an eye, damaged his leg and was wounded over 40 times in France during WWI. his body looked broken, it says a lot for him that he mostly recovered and became the honorary President of Carluke FC. Pretty sure that he had also played for Carluke.
I hope the rag talk of us back chasing the Liverpool boy that played for dundee is only talk ,imho he is not as good as Taylor or more he is not any bigger .what’s wrong with us getting in a couple of big .Paul elliot , mick Mccarthy or Mark rieper type defenders
Apparently the Kyogo thing came from some site called The Athletic.
I’ll be surprised, based on how easily the wee man can get injured.

How’s your Polish…
Celtic Glasgow are seriously interested in Mateusz Bogusz! Talks are already underway with LAFC to determine the transfer amount and negotiations on the 22-year-old’s individual contract
Bawheid,
That’s brilliant my friend.
On Willie Angus ..
Might not have been a good idea to stand next to Willie in the trench, eh?
Injured 40 times?!
That generation of men were made of different stuff.

Hi TSATC
All we have in Scotland is one top tier
Fresh air below that
The b league as a stepping stone is distant
No feeder structure imo to get to play in that top tier.it also at that level impacted with likes of willo floods agency making money farming Scottish youth and shifting it down south where the money is greater at all levels.
I would love it if more young players came thro and played for Celtic,I don’t think tho I could take the defeats and loss of trophies.
Football now is more asset management,we are not comparable with the monies down south,at youth level more money can be offered to Vata,Kelly etc.
We no longer have the vast levels of youth football facilities, within a 2 mile radius of where I type I can think of 35 pitches that used to be played on 2 or 3 times a weekend,no more.if the young are not playin how will they progress? Sadly I see the pool drying up to a puddle resulting in us relying more on purchases and that’s precarious.
HH

Young guy looks great ..

BR would appear to be back on the horse and working his “spurs” — no pun / inference intended.
Looking like he will be using the MOR money to refresh the squad in his image.
Leaving it very late but at least he is pushing for full value out of MOR.
Elephant in the room is the lack of quality home grown / SPL trained players in the squad.
Might explain some of the SPL stalwart local worthy rumours doing the rounds.
As in fill the CL squad not buying cheap.
Hopefully it all makes sense in 10 days time.
Now, a report out of Poland claims Celtic have opened talks with LAFC over Mateusz Bogusz.
The 22-year old is enjoying a stunning campaign in MLS this season, scoring 13 times from midfield.
Well Celtic have released more new kits than they have signed new players this window🤬
Third ‘Camo’ strip now available for pre-order, available end of Aug.
ASWGL
Yes,indeed.
I honestly can’t for the life of me think that the club intended to sell Matt,Reo and Kyogo this window. But if acceptable offers come in,we have an agreement to inform the players. After that,it is their call.
The sensible call would be to reject ALL offers for players that we don’t want to leave. However, the problem is that the buying club then leak that information,we have an unhappy player on our hands and gain a reputation for perfidy in the game. Which would be disastrously self defeating.
Óglach
That picture of the 3rd strip had nothing on it……….😂😂
If we lose Kyogo, Hatate, O’Riley, this League is back to a level playing field…
Bawheid,
Loving your Celtic memorabilia 💚
William Angus VC did indeed play for
‘ The Rovers ‘ ( Carluke).
The town is rightly proud of their heritage,
as should we be proud of our former player.
( although Angus didn’t manage a first- team appearance).
Celtic Star article:
https://thecelticstar.com/the-story-of-william-angus-40-times-wounded-a-brave-celt-who-became-a-hero-on-this-day/
Carluke, a town called Courage”, was coined a few years ago by Jack Murray, an ex Scots Guardsman, when he was astonished to discover that not one but three Carluke men had been awarded the Victoria Cross.
William Angus and Thomas Caldwell were decorated in the First World War and Donald Cameron during the Second. At that time the town had a population of less than 8,000 residents meaningCarluke had more VCs per head of population than any other location in Britain.

Thanks for the reply
I take your point about the lower league but I don’t know if Croatia has one.
We could have blooded plenty of youngsters in the decade after the hun died. Without their hostile presence we could certainly afford a few slip ups in the league. I’d imagine most of our support would accept a few losses and a tighter league win if they could see a crop of talented players coming through our Academy.
I would use the League Cup to play younger players. It’s only value is in local bragging rights/part of a Treble. Most serious football countries don’t bother with their domestic cup never mind a second one. If racking up trophies is all that matters why not campaign to resurrect the Glasgow Cup and we can go for a Quadruple. The League and Europe is where it’s at and that’s where I’d like to see Celtic focus.
