Who’s laughing at who?

Not wanting to pen an article regarding our transfer activity so close to the world famous slamming shut, nor the previous match, nor the upcoming derby lest I spoil my Saturday article, you’ll be sorry to hear I’ll pen one based on the title, because in some situations I’m really not sure whos laughing at who when it comes to Celtic these days.

Let’s start at the very top and work our way down.
Dermot.
After last summers fiasco and subsequent power struggle it’s evident that one thing has changed, the profile of our targets. We have smashed the record transfer fee, haven’t kissed any frogs, and look set to land a few for 5 million plus maybe closer to 10 million in some cases. I’ll speculate we are about to see the biggest summer in outgoing fees ever, while being domestically dominant. Very dominant indeed.
I wonder what fuels this change of tact, yes we are seriously dragging our feet but we just don’t drop this kinda money on players,,so who is Dermot laughing at?
Is it The Tims who thought the old dog wouldn’t be taught new tricks, is it the Champions Leagues qualifiers and coefficient because we’re spending a fortune to have good players bedded in by the time they come around, is it the EPL with their swollen pockets, or maybe the balance sheet itself alongside his share price chart? Or those directors of R2ngers whose undignified celebrations supposedly forced him to plot a new course?

Next let’s take his underlings, the Board. Who are they laughing at? Dermot for sanctioning multiple star purchases thinking there’s trouble for him to deal with down the road, the supporters for believing 40 million is a massive spend when it was covered by football operation sales so the biscuit tin wasn’t touched, the dignitaries of our CL qualifier opponents believing this is the same old Celtic then being blown away by quality, our the rest of Scottish football including our ‘rivals’ who despite paying higher wages are smaller than us and always struggling in one way or another?
Or The Tims for complaining while the club gets officially recognized as one of the best run in football? (Not saying I agree but it’s a fact)

Next we come to Brendan himself, and I’d love to know who exactly he is laughing at.
His own fortune having been given control of the transfer kitty and clearly targeting good quality players, the Board for making worse than a pigs ear of last summers window giving him the power to control transfers, players who leave thinking the grass is greener elsewhere alongside players who believed they would just come to Scotland and stroll it, or maybe the whistlers/VAR who think they can help their brethren?
He might even laugh at Crystal Palace or Arsenal if he gets a tune out of a returning for less Edouard or Tierney respectively.
He won’t be laughing at The Tims, that’s for sure. He would rather laugh with them, I hear he likes Francis Turleys dad and rates his son high enough not to loan him but to play him.

The players, I do wonder who they laugh at?
One linked player said he’s just not coming to Glasgow as he’s enjoying Rome. No problem there amigo, which portrays lifestyle being more important than sporting success and that’s just not the type of player that I want nor suits the club. Big Paolo will know all about Glasgow life by now, just like Big Cam, just like the Japanese contingent, and they are all clearly happy with life not only in Scotland but at a global giant. Polish lad, Belgian lad, aye no bother. I wonder do the players laugh at those not wishing to come north of the border, knowing that once again ‘we’ve got something special here!’. I also wonder if said players will laugh ruefully upon watching ‘what they could have won’ when checking out the Champions League games and noting Parkhead provided the pick of the bunch, in style.

And finally you, The True Tims, who or what will you laugh at?
No one, that’s not much fun.
With Brendan once he brings in real players and shows his hands alone are truly on the tiller, at Augsburg for Engels ‘only’ costing 10 million likewise LAFC ‘gifting’ us Bogutz, at Peter for clearly being out of the loop and out of his depth in the company of ordinary fans, or at those teams who will soon rock up thinking ‘nice stadium, gimme three points and here’s a pat on the head’ only to find themselves behind, in a real tough game, with a rabid crowd urging on what feels like 12 players on the park?
Or the camouflage style Celtic top, surely the worst ever idea marketing endorsed?

I don’t wish to go into the usual ‘it’s a massive week’ speech, but at the end of this season, heck at the end of this transfer window in 2 days time, someone will be laughing at someone or somebody. Whether that’s genuine or rueful laughter I cannot tell, whether that’s for overpaying I do not know.

But what I do know is buying quality players today helps one become prepared for tomorrow, and this time next year (judging by the soon to be joining names and current form) I won’t be shitting myself every qualifying round. We are a good team now, will improve this campaign, Brendan’s teams usually burst out of the blocks plus we’ve got that winner mentality hence beating supposed giants City and Chelsea.
Bed the new ‘serious’ talent in this season, win the treble perfecting our style, and I shall approach next seasons qualifiers not with trepidation but with confidence.
Then who’s laughing at who?

*RESULTS FROM GAME #4 ST MIRREN 0 CELTIC (McGREGOR, HATATE, JOHNTON A)*
Buenos dias, amigos.
In the contest of 30 degrees full sunshine v St Mirren Park there was only one winner. So it was a catch up full re run of the game for me tonight (late Monday). Cerveza may have affected my opinion of the game but hey ho, this is likely to be my only in-season holiday so please cut me some slack: no match report as such, just the voting results.
We have now played 4 games this season, winning them all. We have scored 12 and conceded 1.
As for the voting, a huge thank you to the 68 who joined in this time around.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Schmeichel: 0
Johnston, A*: 29
Carter-Vickers: 0
Scales*: 21
Taylor: 1
McGregor: 58
Hatate*: 67
Bernardo: 10
Forrest: 0
Idah: 1
Maeda: 16
Kyogo: 0
Kuhn: 1
Ralston: 0
Holm: 0
Turley: 0
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against St Mirren are –
Hatate – 5 points
McGregor – 4 points
Johnston A – 3 points
Scales – 2 points
Maeda – 1 point
And the overall positions after 4 games played are –
12 points – Hatate and McGregor
11 points – Kuhn
7 points – O’Riley
6 points – Maeda
3 points – Forrest, Johnston A, Scales and Taylor
1 point – Kyogo
0 points – Bernardo, Carter-Vickers, Holm, Idah, Johnston M., Maeda, Palma, Ralston, Schmeichel, Turley, Yang
*PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR AUGUST*
Ordinarily I would announce this now. However, apologies but this will be included with the results post after our game against TBFC.
Our next game is in the league, at home to Triggers Broom FC. I will still be in Spain for that one too, enjoying my last full day in the sun but I will still be collating the MOTM results.
Provided there are no travel delays on my return journey the results should be issued on the Monday evening at some point after 9.00pm.
Hail Hail!

The only folk that will be laughed at are our Board if we fail to win a two horse race with £100ms sitting in a bank account. We won’t be the ones doing the laughing though….

I’ve said before, they are as dysfunctional as the Huns board, but for very different reasons.

Mahe, Supporting Celtic has alway’s been an emotional roller coaster, if you love something you are drawn into every aspect of its existence, experiencing the highs and lows of whatever happens, the transfer window is just another facet, you want only the very best players to arrive, that was simpler before Bosman, now players, rightly have control of where they want to play and if they don’t like the Country, League, salary etc. then they will not come, likewise with selling clubs, taking the lemon squeezy to get as much mullah out of the buying club as they can, swimming with sharks comes to mind.

Magua, thanks for your reply last night, it was so good that you were the only one to mention it, but much oh graziarse. You were right about Suarez, he was a great player but getting on and about Joe McBride, also Bobby Murdoch was injured early on in Lisbon, his foot being stood on, Bertie asking him if he was alright, you can see the pain in Bobby’s face when the game is over and just for effect
CELTIC WON THE EUROPEAN CUP. also the system that Herrera played was rigid and restrictive, Jock had him sussed out and Celtic were INVINCIBLE – UNSTOPPABLE – UNBEATABLE.

The early years of Jock Stein are fascinating, Blantyre Vic’s – Albion Rovers (1942) where he took over the running of the team, tactics etc. this is really where his coaching career really started, I have always believed that when he played for Albion Rovers, its ground was close to where Jimmy Gribben lived and that’s where Jimmy became aware of big Jock. Then Wales with Llanelli Town (1950), I don’t believe in coincidence so I still think his journey back to Scotland was manufactured, just my opinion.
Signed for Celtic FC – 4th December 1951 as a centre half.
Began coaching the Celtic reserves 1957 – 13th. March 1960.
Jock took the Celtic reserves through tactics – playing with the ball fitness etc. Jimmy McGrory Celtic goal-scoring legend never even came to training the first team, running, running, running.
Then Dunfermline FC – my first Celtic game the 1960-61 Cup Final.
John Stein The Best Of The Best – 5th October 1922 – 10th September 1985.

My favourite picture of Jock Stein as a player and as Celtic Captain- Feel The Love. 😉

Yes, will he very interesting to see what the new loanee brings, note the last paragraph…

Valle: “I’m very excited, it’s a great opportunity to come to this historic club. They have given me a lot of confidence to come here, so I will try to do my best to return the confidence. I’ve heard a lot about the fans and and what we can experience in this stadium, so I’m just excited to see it in real life.

“The manager gave me a lot of confidence to come here. He told me that he has watched some games in Barca and Levante, so I’m really happy to be here and looking forward to training with the team.

“I would say this way of playing is the best for my style and for what I like. I’ve been learning it in the Barca academy, so I’m looking forward to playing.”

I’m not saying that Brendan doesn’t want him . But it shows how incompetent the recruitment team are , that they can’t find a left back to replace Taylor.

This window doesn’t seem to be one of the more busy ones, considering what’s been spent in previous windows.

And if we can close the deals we are trying to, we may end up bringing in 8 or 9 players.

By close of play on Friday(?), i wonder how many clubs will have added that many players?

Plus,, if all that comes to pass, would I be right in thinking this would be among the very best windows the club has ever had??

Would be good to go into this weekend with everyone back on the same page!

Let’s hope the perennial moaners have something to brighten their day come Saturday. Sounds like they need it.

Basking in the warm glow produced by new signings. Although even then they’ll no doubt find fault somewhere.

Along with others I have been expecting a centre half, a couple of mids( now Matt is away) and a left back. A mix of permanent and loans.
Left back is a ✔️. Not to some though!

Three more in and that’s a successful window. Their quality can only be assessed when they’ve kicked a ball for us. Not by armchair critics.

No more signings is a disaster.

Let’s see where we are by the weekend.

Lighten up, anything said here changes nothing.

Just sayin,
Maybe you ought to direct your chill out comments to the Manager. He was quite implicit that our recruitment and football operation is not fit for purpose so it’s not just the whingers on here who are upset.
Even if we do get another 3/4 players in, again BR pointed out they should have been in earlier. We don’t need to give ourselves extra stress is what he said. He’s fed up and so are most of the support. It’s actually not whinging to want your club to operate as best it can and to expect executives who are paid exorbitant salaries and talk of wanting to be world class in everything we do to deliver on that.
Whinge over!!

Just Sayin’
August 28, 2024 11:45 am

Chairbhoy

Have we?
We haven’t lost a game in pre season and four competitive matches. Therefore a left back coming in now is no disadvantage.

The alternative narrative may be we are waiting for someone else next window or one after?
This opinion is no less tenable than your assessment.

We now have two left backs. We are not worse off. How many do you want?

A t o b

Good news that recruitment is being overhauled.

BR has also highlighted the vagaries of getting deals done.
Two clubs are involved. Each attempting to do the best deal possible.
It took two months for Matt to get his deal done. His own words.

If we have shipped out players who were not up to required standard and replaced them with those who are, or have stronger potential to be, then the nature of the result matters not a jot.

Loanees, net spend, speed of transfer or PL involvement are of no relevance. Just something to justify negativity.

If the overall quality of the squad has gone up I would take that to mean my focus on policy and factors that change it, based on reason not emotion, was correct and the purpose was not to defend The Board but to inform anyone who took the time to read the information provided of why the past was not necessarily an indicator of the present.

As ever we’ll see.

I recall BR saying recruitment was an area just like football that needed development.

That does not mean how it is done is a disaster but recognition it could be improved whilst prepared to work with how it is in this window.

I thought what he said made sense as no point expressing dissatisfaction at the very people BR relied on to improve the squad this window.

Very astute is BR.

August 28, 2024 12:10 pm

Auldheid et al…so does the end justify the means – at all costs? Not in my opinion. Nor in Brendan’s. His stated preference was to have players in earlier, to allow more preparation time, to get guys up to speed quicker, to allow quicker bonding of personalities/languages/cultures etc. We might end up stronger by Saturday morning and no one can have any cause for complaint if that happens. But, if it could have been done quicker, for whatever many and varied reasons we’re given, then the system is not working as efficiently as it can, or should!
And therein lies the real issue!

Big Audio Dynamite
August 28, 2024 12:13 pm

Given we are among the largest supports in world football, it would seem a tad silly to expect us all to think and feel the same.

Come the end of the window, some will be satisfied with the business we will have done, but others, as is their right, may not be.

What never seems (To me) to work though, is telling others how they should feel.

If we get to Saturday morning with a feeling of unity, given what’s ahead and at stake, I will consider the summer a success.

I just want Celtic to win! And that is something I will NEVER tire of.

If we emerge from the window strong enough to compete in Europe and dominate at home I very much doubt the talk on the terraces will be the recruitment process is awful.

That is not to say it cannot be improved of course, any well run business should be seeking continual improvement but the end is a successful team on the park and as long as that is acheived by honest endeavour in the prevailing circumstance the terraces will care not a jot.

Good Morning / Afternoon All 👋🏻
Bawheid,
Remiss of me not to thank you for yesterday’s memories of The Lions 25th Anniversary.
I was at the game arranged V. Sir Matt Busby’s 1968 Big Ears Winners at Celtic Park 1992.
Can you believe The Lions were persona non grata back then and not revered as they so richly are nowadays. So much so, that I believe the 25th Anniversary was a relatively low-key affair 😢.
I believe Martin O’Neill, a two-times winner himself with Nottingham Forest ,helped change that mindset.
I can’t really unearth a lot of detail regarding this particular event.
From memory I enjoyed a Celtic Celebrity team V. Coronation Street team.
( and Naw, Bette Lynch wisnae up front as twin strikers 😂)
My wee pal Jinky Gilmour from The Silencers scored a penalty. I’ve never heard the last of that since 👂.
Our own wee Jinky scored a belter in the challenge match. An untypical thunderbolt volley from the apex of the 18yard box into the roof of the net.
John Clark later told me they reckoned it was the best ever goal the wee man had scored.🤷🏻‍♂️😂.
Anybody got any more details 🤔
Thanks again Bawheid 🤗

Auldheid…with all respect there are none of us on here, or the majority on the terraces, who are privy to the ‘prevailing circumstances’ of the transfer market and as a result have been watching the news day after interminable day for a snippet of ‘real’ activity and good news. The fact that weeks later we’re in the final throes and only marginally better off will leave a lot of questions even after the window has closed. You will be as aware as I am of the general mood of the support. This isn’t about this window, this is about the last 3 windows in conjunction with the massive bank balance.
You are absolutely right the guys on the terraces will be happy that we’ve improved the team, that’s what the windows are supposed to be about, but I doubt they’ll forget how we got here. I won’t!

Hi Bawheid…I enjoy your posts, and am impressed by your collection of memorabilia! It looks like a lifetime’s work and worth every penny and minute you’ve invested in it.
This bottle of whisky is worthless but I’ve had it so long it takes pride of place in my bar!
Going back to 1997, I had a wee shop in Rutherglen, my mate was doing a bit of work in the Rutherglen distillery, he came in and said the distillery was producing 30th Anniversary bottles of Lisbon Lion Whisky, in a single malt or a blend. Each bottle numbered 1 – 1967, 12 designs, 1 of each player and one of Big Jock, each bottle depicted with a caricature of the player (or Jock) and carrying a printed copy of the player’s signature.
I got a Jinky malt for me, number 22 of 1967, and a Bobby Murdoch for my old man (as BM was my mammy’s wee cousin). I just got my old man a blend as despite me telling him not to drink it, I knew he would!
I think the malt was £35 a bottle, I can’t remember the cost of the blend.
Anyway, my eldest child was born in 2002 after a few years of trying for a family. I vowed to celebrate by cracking open the Jinky malt…I didn’t, I couldn’t. I wanted to save it for something even more special!! Daughter #2 arrived in May ’04 and despite it being a memorable season, 105 goals and a League and Cup double, the bottle remained untouched.
Fast Forward to 2006 and the arrival of Kid #3, the apple of my eye…my wee bhoy! Surely that had to be the moment, the breaking of the seal! Eh, naw! Champagne and prosecco marked his arrival as it did the girls’!
So it stands, still, on the top shelf of the bar, and I think it’ll remain shut. Unless the wee guy decides to celebrate when I finally shuffle off this mortal coil!! 🤣

I liked the look of Luke McCowan last season. At 26 he’s a good age to come into the squad. The only doubt would be his lack of experience at the level expected for Celtic. Robson before he arrived at Celtic had a fair bit of experience in the Prem with Dundee Utd so was more ready to step up but as a goalscoring midfielder with DU he didn’t quite bring that with him.
I’m happy to sign McCowan though, ye can never have too many Scottish Tims in a Celtic team!
