Two big games and some big calls

I cannot be annoyed with International, I won’t even tune in to Ireland versus the auld enemy in Dublin today, and besides as soon as the games start up, they get closed down for a stretch. Ridiculous and the fixture calendar definitely needs looked at.

Anyway enough of that, when it comes to club football, like that special team under Lenny I just can’t get enough, and hopefully the wait will be worth it as upon our return we have two cracking fixtures both at home.
Hearts on the Saturday afternoon.
Slovan Bratislava on the Wednesday evening.
Manna from heaven for the proper games craving supporters like myself.
But I tell you what, I don’t envy the managers selection headache over those five days.

For starters, you don’t give debuts in a ‘gotta win it’ Champions League game.
In other words if Trusty or Valle are to be starting on the Wednesday under the lights, logic dictates they start on the Saturday.
However logic also dictates you don’t fix it if it’s not broken!
This is a big call because if (heavens forbid) our left side is a sore spot against Slovan, he will either be advised he should have started with the other bloke!
Scales has a ‘mare, everyone will say why not start Trusty!?
Taylor has a ‘mare, same about Valle.
Valle has a mare, he will get criticized for changing the winning team.
Ditto Trusty.
Winning the game with whoever is selected is the only way to emerge with credit, anything less than a win invites criticism.
So I’m very confident that whoever starts in defense against Hearts will start in the midweek European game.
For the record I’m in the ‘leave it alone’ camp.
Besides, not long ago we had a 20 year old sent off in the CL, they can be too enthusiastic rather than canny. Let Greg start both games and access from there if Valle needs brought in at all.

Brendan’s biggest headache is probably the midfield area. Engels joined the club to play in the Champions League, his old manager said so. Callum ain’t getting dropped obviously, however both Paolo and Reo can and have won games almost singlehandedly at times. Their current form makes them undroppable, but I cannot think of a better occasion to play Arne, home against weaker opponents on paper. A game we are expected to win.
So who drops out?
I’m opting for Reo based on the following.

He gives the ball away more than Bernardo, at least to me he does.
I believe he reads the game better and tackles stronger (yet sensibly) than Hatate, highlights show Engels is a tackler/battler also, ditto Callum, so that would be three hard to bypass players which offers promise given the much repeated comment that ‘they waltzed through the middle of the park and scored’. Reo was generally in the ‘victims’ team. Last year Brendan often turned to the Portugese midfielder, surprise surprise we beat Anges points tally with the guts of Ange’s team.
Reo is creative, Paolo is industrious,,I’m of the opinion while at Europe’s top table, we opt for a more workmanlike system, one that’s hard to beat, a midfield that cannot be cut through easily, because there’s goals in our attack we should probably ‘sacrifice’ the attack minded midfielder for a box to box player. Reo’s good, very good, but I wouldn’t describe him as an excellent box to box player.
I’d go with Callum, Arne, Bernardo to start the next two games.

Now you might be pulling your hair out thinking ‘Mahe the Champions League is about creating chances and taking them, so we need Reo’s vision to provide those chances via a delish pass or two’ and I get that, I honestly do. He can score, he can pass, he’s got experience at that level and doesn’t look out of place. I would not complain if he was starting on Wednesday.

But I yearn for better, I yearn to never again read they went through us like a knife through butter, I long for a different approach to European football. Under Ange-ball most of the team attacked, and his philosophy was to outscore the opposition. Outscore? I want to stop them scoring, because in that competition goals are like gold-dust, at both ends. I want a team that’s a bitch to play against, at both ends. The attack looks sorted now that Kuhn, Kyogo, and Maeda are fully upto speed with each other, we stop the quick thrusts through the middle and we have a much better chance of reaching the hallowed ground of going through to the last 24. I want Brendan to do whatever it takes to stop our midfield being easy to pass through by any means necessary, and if that means benching Hatate then so be it.
Do you agree?

In addition to the nominated treble (see above) there is also a weekly 6-team acca. Each of us is looking for a nailed on certainty, but there’s no such thing! But we only make one selection each, and all we ask is
If yer daft enough to follow our advice, put a quid on for the nominated charity as well! LCCT is over £400 up after last week’s 40/1 stoatir,so we are hoping to build on that.
Go on,folks. A quid? What are you waiting for?

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.

That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.

Sat down to watch the NFL season opener last night,,,and my goodness it’s advert central. Every break in play, same shit. Toyota, Verizon, McDonalds etc.
By the end of the first 30 minutes of play, it had actually been 95 minutes I shit you not.
In saying that Fly Eagles Fly, looking forward to tonight’s game in Philly, my old stomping ground. Quite an experience living there. Celtic Supporters love their team, but the Eagles fans are on par. They are huge, and that’s an understatement. All my workmates talked about all day when they weren’t huddled around the newspaper that published the photos of everyone who had just died through getting shot.

Delete all your social media accounts immediately. Facebook, instagram, TikTok, twitter, Reddit the lot. Do not participate in them any longer. You will thank me on your deathbeds

Stop funding sports of any kind. It’s all a sham. You will thank me on your deathbeds.

Hi Mahe:
Some NFL games now take 4 hours for 4 quarters of 15 minutes each of actual play. For most games, the ball is in the air for a grand total of 8 minutes. Quarter backs, who get paid tens of millions of dollars are only on the field for half an hour of actual play, as they are obviously sitting while their team is defending. For most of them, it’s 16 to 18 games, so around 9 hours play a year. Great work, if you can get it.🤣

As for the Eagles game, it’s in Sao Paulo, Brazil, mate, The Eagles gave up home field advantage ( if there is such a thing in the NFL ) for more TV money.

Just watch, the EPL is itching to do that in the US and feck home fans who have season tickets. Once it happens, the TV companies will introduce water breaks, so a minimum 4 quarters, ads during ‘injury time out’, and constantly scrolling on screen ads. They just cant handle sports without numerous ‘time out’.

from yesterday .. just catching up now.

To clarify, not making any comparisons between Private v Public sector management skills. Not my intention to champion one over the other.

I imagine the very best in both will be exemplary.

You will know, I have to guess, that few Public Sector Departments operate on budgets of (only) circa £120m ?

However, I’d admit to believing a small PLC like Celtic would be far more agile in terms of making a policy decision and enacting effectively, and almost overnight, to meet a pressing need or capitalise on an emerging opportunity, If they so chose. Within usual legal restrictions.

Again, on the subject of CEO the issues I identify centre around Performance: On hiring and development and Europe and communication..we are failing by any reasonable measure. Surely all of those headings fall under his core responsibilities?

Do we really need to see JD or KPI’s or his bonus/kickers criteria to expect that he is accountable for all of these areas?

It seems he’s getting a pass for now, as others feel he’s doing well enough.

i disagree and the next 4 months in CL and January ‘25 Window is looming large.

Can’t agree, Reo must start. He has good vision, sees the pass, can score a goal, tackles etc. I would start with the same 11, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Looking forward to seeing all the new recruits playing just not in this game. No risks just get the 3 points.

Be a lot less easier “to waltz through “ if there were four of them in there.
More so if one sat just behind.

Again you are assuming that their objectives are your objectives. What if their objectives are different? What if they ARE delivering on their objectives ie the objectives set down by the de facto owner?

That would explain why they remain in post, are clearly in good standing and are very well remunerated.

Won u21 Euro’s with England, can he and they make a new blend.
Ireland has a new Icelandic manager.
Declan Rice, three full Ireland caps.
Grealish, minor caps for Ireland.
Eze may start.
Is Harry Kane done.
Will Roy Keane smile or self combust.

I agree Mahe. I think Bernardo will occupy one of the three midfield slots along with CalMac. Can’t see Engels missing out either. So Reo on the bench with Luke.

Scales and CCV own the centre back jerseys as do the current fullbacks, so no change there either.

Front three picks itself. Kuhn, Kyogo, Maeda.

Ernie Lynch has made a key point.
We need to see the KPIs to see where in the list football objectives feature.

Do they contain a target for completion of a signing once contact has been made with another club or player for example?

I doubt it but if they existed what you reasonably seek would already be evident.

There simply has to be a better understanding overall of Celtic’s business strategy and how they go about fulfilling it to make progress.

Supporters should have some input to the Strategy as key stakeholders.

The capacity to do that does not exist to the required degree.

The area of involvement is confined to shareholders at AGM and that process needs overhauled.

A start was made at Nov 2022 AGM but has already been dismissed by some on grounds Celtic cannot be trusted.

That is understandable but the process of involvement has to start somewhere.

The CST picked up on the Tracey Crouch idea of a Shadow Board which is worth exploring if CST can convince non shareholders that they can act on their behalf, but that is a battle in itself.

Sorry again about my private sector rant but right from the off I could see what is becoming obvious, profit taking precedence over service.

Around two dozen Celtic ultras all dressed in black were met by dozens of cops as they tried to walk into George Square near where hundreds of anti-immigration protesters – many carrying Union Jack flags – were gathered just after 12.30pm.
But cops kettled the young men in and then marched the group past demonstrators.
The group – some wearing Celtic buffs around their faces – were met with jeers and the song Rule, Britannia, as they were marched slowly by the anti-immigration protesters, by cops.
Members of the protest group could be heard singing the ‘Billy Boys’ song as the ultras passed by

Are we the only group who gets kettled by the cops?

============
The Board will know MN’s KPi’s and if none of the elements mentioned are in them and others The Board set are then he will be Employee of the Year.

For example if a KPI was to engage with UEFA in the development of UEFA TSR regulations to The Board’s satisfaction then MN would be assessed accordingly.

Meaningful KPI’s are not easy to define then measure so sometimes what is easier to measure is used as opposed to what is more difficult and effective.
