To be a spider on the wall

If James Bond or The Milk-Tray man is reading I will pay handsomely for a bug to be planted in the Celtic boardroom, because the suspense of what’s next is killing me. How I would like to know their positions on many issues!

For starters, lay out the plan, or should I say how’s updating the plan going.
Okay, our transfer policy switched at the same time the Champions League format changed to prolong clubs involvement and become more lucrative, alongside this we not only break the transfer record but went an alleged 48k a week on said player, whilst having amassed the guts of 100 million in the bank.
Feed those facts to a football expert and it’s my utmost belief he/she would say something along the following,,,the club is aiming for European football and have hedged their bets on involvement via the bank balance.

Access to Europe’s top table more than covers a top talent like Engels or two throwing in Idah. Infact the win bonuses alone would go a long way in that regard.
In Arnes case we are looking at a triple return on investment,,extra points thus income on the pitch domestically and Europe, and profit upon departure. It’s hard to see any downside for continuing to target high caliber players when qualifying for the CL even once more than covers the fee and wages, a good run in its sister competition would just about cover the fee.

So now footballing ambitions and business sense have found the perfect marriage, will we fully embrace the concept of constantly adding high quality players until we are of sufficient strength to almost guarantee being favourites in any qualifiers, or capture enough coefficient points to automatically qualify again?
When its making sense on the pitch and on the glorious balance sheet, you don’t change course.
Making Arne Engel types the normal, not the exception, is the path to overall progression.
I just hope our suits are smart enough to realize that.

In addition to the nominated treble (see above) there is also a weekly 6-team acca. Each of us is looking for a nailed on certainty, but there’s no such thing! But we only make one selection each, and all we ask is

If yer daft enough to follow our advice, put a quid on each for the nominated charity as well! The current drive got a £400 boost from this a couple of weeks back,so we are hoping to build on that.

Go on,folks. A quid? What are you waiting for?

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.

That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #8 CELTIC 5 FALKIRK 2 (BERNARDO, IDAH(2), KUHN(2))*
Good evening, friends.
Our 8th competitive game of season 2024-25 saw us face our toughest opponents so far. And whilst hindsight allows me to see that they would run out of steam, for a full hour yesterday it was toe to toe stuff with our cup progress in some doubt. That didn’t stop me from enjoying the battle and sometimes being on the edge of my seat is much preferrable to the ole pipe and slippers approach.
Just 10 minutes into the game and having already had 2 or 3 forays upfield, Falkirk took the lead with a well placed curling shot from 22 yards into Kaspar’s left hand corner. But a further 10 minutes later saw Celtic draw level after a good passing move and a neat headed assist from new bhoy Velle allowing Bernardo to hit a fantastic strike and open his account for the season.
Throughout the first half our completely new back 4 were given a stern test, particularly on our left hand side and in injury time things got really interesting when the Falkirk left back found himself in acres of space to place a fine header back across and into Kaspar’s left hand corner. Again.
I actually thought we played well enough in stages during the first half but failed to create that many chances. Training 2-1 at the break was unexpected but I wasn’t unduly worried, remembering the options we had on the bench.
It is a fair assumption that Brendan told a number of players that they had 15 minutes to show some improvement in the second half. And when that didn’t happen, we saw a quadruple substitution where we changed both wingers, our left back and one of our midfielders. And all 4 new players contributed very well to the cause, particularly both Yang and Kuhn who were much more committed, direct and threatening than Forrest and Palma had been previously.
In the 67th minute Yang did very well, coming in from the left, playing a couple of one-twos and then hitting a fine strike but unfortunately it was straight down the keeper’s throat. It did however signal our increased tempo. And just 2 minutes later Celtic drew level. An almost copycat goal from the previous weekend but this time VAR confirmed that Idah was a couple of inches onside rather than a couple of inches off.
Falkirk restarted but, incredibly, fell behind just 11 seconds later with Idah doing very well to squeeze through 2 central defenders and finish off a fine pass from Kuhn.
The outcome of the tie was finally determined on 80 minutes when Engels sent Kuhn through one on one with the Falkirk goalie. A composed dink from Nicolas saw the ball reach the back of the net. And 4 minutes later it was Kuhn again to close the game off with his 2nd of the day.
In the end the 5-2 scoreline perhaps flattered Celtic a little but nevertheless capped off a very satisfying 8 days. 3 home games in 3 different competitions saw us score 13 (from 7 different goalscorers) and concede 3.
We have now played 8 games this season, winning them all. We have scored 27 and conceded 4.
The voting numbers were unchanged from midweek so my thanks to the 71 who wanted their opinions to count! And for the first time this season, every voter included a particular player as one of their 3 nominations.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Schmeichel: 0
Ralston: 0
Trusty: 1
Welsh: 0
Valle: 0
McGregor: 4
Bernardo*: 62
Hatate: 0
Forrest: 1
Idah: 54
Palma: 0
Engels: 10
Yang*: 6
Kuhn*: 71
Taylor: 4
Nawrocki: 0
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Falkirk (3 substitutes in the top 5!) are –
Kuhn – 5 points
Bernardo – 4 points
Idah – 3 points
Engels – 2 points
Yang – 1 point
And the overall positions after 8 games played are –
18 points – McGregor
16 points – Kuhn
12 points – Engels, Hatate, Maeda and Scales
9 points – Bernardo
7 points – O’Riley
5 points – Johnston A and Taylor
4 points – Carter-Vickers
3 points – Forrest and Idah
2 points – Kyogo
1 point – Schmeichel and Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., McCowan, Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Trusty, Turley, Valle, Welsh

We now return to league action with a visit to St Johnstone next Saturday evening, kick off 5.45pm. We may start the game in 2nd place if Aberdeen take anything from their visit to Dundee. And actually, I hope we do!
Hail Hail!

Good morning, friends.
Mahe/Bobby – I’m not sure there’s any need to copy and paste my POTY report again. A bit of overkill methinks. Logical to do so in the article following the issue of the results but once probably enough? In fact, Mahes fine lead article was more in tune with my posts yesterday evening regarding European prize money.
Anyway, babysitting again awaits…..

I guess I posted this on the wrong thread. I should start taking the pills again!

Hi,

Recently, Celtic’s success in 1967 has been rattling around in my brain. In particular, the fact that the team were all locals stands out. What was it again….” all born within 30 miles of one another….”?

It set me wondering if there have been other locally produced teams that have done well.
And, of course, the answer is “Yes”. The standout is Athletic Club or Atletico Bilbao from the Basque region of Spain. The population is difficult to measure because it occupies historically disputed territories spanning France and Spain, but official Spanish stats suggest a population of 2.2 million…..smaller than Scotland!

Despite the small population, Bilboa have a philosophy that only plays players born in or raised in the Basque countries/counties. Can you imagine what Celtic would look like if they only played Scottish lads? The consequence of this policy is that the youth academies of Athletico and other Basque teams are crucial for the survival of the team. Surely, we are beating a path to their door??? Probably not!

Despite this restriction, AB has never been relegated from La Liga, outside of the big two, it has won the most trophies. Further it has supplied more players to the national team than any other Spanish club!

To the point, the story I am going to tell is set in the fifties. AB, like Celtic, has a historical reputation of playing attacking football. In the early fifties, their team had aged and needed replaced. A new coach, the Austrian , Ferdinand Daucik, was hired to build a new team in 1954. By 1956 he was winning cups and the league, but the real triumph was to come in 1958 in the cup.
In 1958, Real Madrid led by Di Stefano were carrying all before them, including the league and the European Cup. Both they and Bilboa reached the Spanish Cup final which the authorities had decided would be played at Madrid’s ground. Bilboa appealed against this, saying it should be played on a neutral ground. Nope, that was not to be! Por Que? Who knows!

Long story short, Bilboa won by two goals to nil.

At the reception the Bilboa president shouted out..”we beat them with eleven villagers…” So much for the galacticos!

None of this detracts from the Celtic triumph of 1967 but the Bilboa philosophy shows that values still exist in football. Viva Bilboa!

Interesting stuff re Athletic Bilbao- remarkable that they have never been relegated – and are generally a top half team- given their signing policy.

Celtic’s achievement of winning the big cup with a team ( and the rest of the squad) all of whom were born within 30 miles is hard to beat – and won’t be in my lifetime- but the Real side which won in 66 was the first winner to have all 11 players born in the same country* ( Di Stefano and Puskas having moved on). Steaua Bucharest who won in 86 were all Romanian although as, like Real, they were the ‘regime’s’ club and as such had the choice of all the best players in that country. **

I looked up the info in the post-script.
