Blinded by the lights
It was a strange game in some respects, Saturday night entertainment should have seen the arena filled but it wasn’t, the scoreline suggests a fantastic team performance but it wasn’t, and there were players dropping here, there, and everywhere suggesting a dirty game, but again it wasn’t.
Plus, Engles was anonymous, the first time I’ve typed those words.
Also the stadium screen controller had a ‘mare that resulted in a dressing down, another first for me.
Self praise is no praise, I predicted two changes and two changes there were. I predicted the starters would be ordered to win the game then we would see wholesale changes but the second string would also go all out to score,,both correct but it was hardly rocket science just mere common sense instead.
As predicted Trusty got the right hand of defense slot, but I expected Ralston at right back. The Canadian started and played well, he’s a tough wee bastard, pardon my French.
The game kicked off and once again Celtic took their time gaining a foothold. That’s concerning given we start slow and so do Dortmund according to their latest result. Brendan, please make sure we fly out of the blocks from here on.
After a scrappy opening we start creating chances, with Kyogos runs causing problems. It’s only a matter of time I thought. The his fellow countryman stuck the ball in the back of the net, the replays showed he was inline thus eligible, but VAR said no. Ten minutes later Maeda completely misses the ball and takes the legs for a yellow card, he later scored providing a classic example of the flawed but loved Japanese Jack of all trades.
That disallowed goal seemed to spark us into life because it was all Celtic from there. Our talismanic striker bagged a brace which is excellent preparation for Ze Germans, the first was a Larsson-esque header, the second seriously reminded me of the Ibrox goal he scored from Matt’s through the middle of defense header. I’m delighted, he deserves praise for he is an excellent striker for Celtic.
Paolo helped himself to another long range effort and that’s all we can ask of him, one wonders has he done enough to overtake Reo in the pecking order.
Callum did the same, his left wand is a great asset.
Adam finished off the team goal of the game, did you notice Valles flick assist?
Tasty!
So 6 versus zip on the day but also outscoring Dortmund without hitting top gear is a statement, and a clean sheet.
Trusty was perfect,,sometimes mopping up, sometimes starting the play, sometimes breaking through the middle with the ball himself, all while being a threat from corners (he shoulda/coulda scored).
Valle slotted in with ease. Central defense does not look disjointed with two left footers, not at all. Infact the Yank was the better on the day in my humble opinion.
Left back was not weakened by the switch, the Spaniard has good close control as one would expect.
Our own German Kuhn was lively and once again did something positive providing an assist.
AJ is fine, no injury concerns, he played well.
As previously explained, this was the ultimate desired result pre Champions League, couldn’t ask for better than outdoing Dortmunds goal tally to send a signal.
We are good, a fine team indeed with enough in the locker to trouble anyone, and now we know they know it. The beauty of our next fixture is the unpredictability, somewhat showcased by scoring 6 and having more in the tank.
It’s funny but I also got this feeling under Ange, we are progressing and heading somewhere, where exactly became the mystery although he did leave us in much better shape, Cheers Mate.
This collection though,,,in my eyes they possess that most vital ingredient,,,desire. Martin’s primo team would beat them, but this group absolutely appear hungry and motvated.
Let’s see how the future Pre Champions League games go, and discover if this is random or the new standard.
Well done Celtic, well done indeed.

Slightly sharp view of the game — more good stuff on show than you managed to comment on.
If we string 3 or 4 good passes together then we make chances.
Saturday was special in that we took our chances.
Eventually after a slow start.
Confidence is growing so people are not afraid to try stuff.
What was on show is plentiful on the training ground.
Less visible in a real game.
So making progress.
Still lots to do.
We are not comfortable defending in our own 18 yard box.
LS has the defensive discipline of a cocker spaniel — too much energy.
CMcG is our weak link in the MF — just not got it when we do not have the ball.
AV looks more like a MF’er than a defender — still a step up from GT.
AT seems a more complete player than anyone we have at CB at the moment.
NK worked the ball well but his finishing was off.
AE drifted in and out of the game — NK didn’t need his help / he did it all by himself.
PB also drifted in and out of the game — but when he was in he was good.
Overall we seemed to play more of the game at pace.
Ball forward earlier into space rather than the horseshoe of doom from last season.
Ludge VAR — played a blinder.
Ludge MIB — second fiddle but still put in a shift.
You have to hand it to them both — fast learners / total effort.
BD game / EUFA MIB’s — worth a watching.
Media market calculus will be in play plus last season’s finalists will have favours to cash in.
Are PP running a book on who will get a first half red card?
*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #9 ST JOHNSTONE 0 CELTIC 6 (KYOGO(2), BERNARDO, McGREGOR, MAEDA, IDAH)*
Good evening, friends.
I didn’t catch the game live and only found time to watch a full re-run a couple of hours ago but wasn’t it great to yet again be fantastically entertained by our fast flowing football.
Admittedly we took a wee while to make the breakthrough but half an hour in saw a fantastic, sweet strike from Daizen Maeda. Unfortunately, and very surprisingly the VAR asked the referee to consider a coming together in the box and the referee decided that Trusty had impeded the St Johnstone defender and disallowed the goal.
But just 4 minutes later and we did score the opener when Kyogo was sent through on the keeper and this time made no mistake with his finish. On 43 minutes we doubled our lead with a quite fantastic goal. A 60 yard 9 iron from the very impressive Johnstone was controlled by Kuhn who played it over to Kyogo to lay it into the path of Bernardo. A sweet, controlled curler into the bottom corner made for brilliant viewing.
And 2 minutes later we had a 3rd. Some more great link up play, a fine cross from Taylor and Kyogo had his second with a Larssonesque header.
That turned out to be Taylor’s last contribution as a half time substitution saw and appearance for Valle. And it’s worth noting that both Valle and Trusty were both far more impressive than last week.
10 minutes into the second half saw us extend our lead with a fine strike from Calmac from outside of the box. Again! And halfway through the second half, Maeda finally managed to get a goal to count with a bullet header from a very precise cross from Bernardo.
With 15 minutes remaining, Calmac was given a well earned rest and handed the armband to captain-in-wating Johnstone. I’d love to think that AJ will actually play out the rest of his career with Celtic as he is so impressive both on and off the park.
Finally, we now know that we had saved the best till last. In the 83rd minute McCown played an exquisite lob wedge chip to Valle whose backheel was slotted home by Idah. But the reality is that we have scored so many fantastic goals this season. Of the 33 we have netted so far, is it only me who thinks that about 25 of them are in the frame for goal of the season?
All in all a fantastic 3 points to keep us top of the table on goal difference from Aberdeen.
We have now played 9 games this season, winning them all. We have scored 33 and conceded 4 although none yet in the league!
It must be more than coincidence but for the 3rd game in a row I’ve received votes from 71 folk! Thank you for your support.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Schmeichel: 0
Johnston*: 6
Trusty: 3
Scales: 3
Taylor: 0
McGregor*: 24
Engels: 1
Bernardo: 49
Kuhn: 27
Kyogo*: 48
Maeda: 51
Valle: 1
Hatate: 0
Idah: 0
Forrest:0
McCowan : 0
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against St Johnstone are –
Maeda – 5 points
Bernardo – 4 points
Kyogo – 3 points
Kuhn – 2 points
McGregor – 1 point
And the overall positions after 9 games played are –
19 points – McGregor
18 points – Kuhn
17 points – Maeda
13 points – Bernardo
12 points – Engels, Hatate and Scales
7 points – O’Riley
5 points – Kyogo, Johnston A and Taylor
4 points – Carter-Vickers
3 points – Forrest and Idah
1 point – Schmeichel and Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., McCowan, Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Trusty, Turley, Valle, Welsh
*PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR SEPTEMBER*
The monthly award is based simply on the total votes received over that particular month. During September we had 5 games across 3 competitions – 4 home games in a row(!) against Triggers Broom FC, Hearts, Slovan Bratislava, Falkirk and then yesterday’s game away to St Johnstone.
Third place with 134 votes is Daizen Maeda whilst the runner up on 139 was Nicolas Kuhn. But the clear winner with 173 votes is Paulo Bernardo.
Monthly winners –
August – Calum McGregor 184
September – Paulo Bernardo 173
We now travel to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday with an 8.00pm kick off. I am confident that at least 3 of our players will merit your recognition of their fine performance.
Hail Hail!
It’s the co-ordinated movement off the ball that is a joy to see, teamplay at its best and instead of eleven men playing disjointedly there can be no doubt that this is a Celtic team playing the Celtic way, with fast flowing accurate passing, where the speed of movement, each player knowing where their fellow team mates will be and the spaces that they will run into. There can be no doubt but this is a Brendan Rodgers team, working fast and hard for each other, some of the movement comes straight from the training ground. Well done Brendan and your team.
We all like to make comparisons with Celtic teams of the past, but that is an impossible task, different players playing in different positions and in different conditions with a totally different set of competition. Its fun to try though…..
The wee man with the HUGE heart, born this day years ago, but whose memory will live on forever. The man who mesmerised us all with his trickery, charisma and cheek, his talent was off the Richter scale. Jimmy, Jimmy Johnstone on the wing, was this his finest hour?
Ole Ole Ole.
Bawheid…
Yes, Jinky is my favourite ever Celtic player, what a privilege to be a youngster watching that sublime talent
Mahe…
Before the Slovan Bratislava game we were wondering just how good this Celtic team are!?
Bratislava would give us an insight, however, it created more questions than answers – in a good way of course
Yet here we are again, this time away against top European opposition but with the same question, just how good is this Celtic team!?
We must get our feet on the ground and say that going to Germany and giving a good account of ourselves is the best we can hope for realistically, any result is a huge bonus.
;
On not steam rolling St Johnstone from the start and Engels being anonymous my take was different, we set up different, especially in midfield.
No disrespect for St Johnstone but my feeling was due to the lack of UCL prep time between matches BR&Co utilised the game in Perth as part of our prep; the setting up, the starting eleven, the training ground set plays, the substitutions all had the elements of looking at preparation for German
Hail Hail
Nostalgia – Was the greatest team that ever played, or players that donned your beloved Hoops.
It won everything, and was the best player that ever played the beautiful game.
All we can ever hope for is to accept the players and team of the present.
Perception is everything, for the individual, its what you believe or believe in, its how you judge players and teams in your own mind, but perception never won a solitary game, only the team and the players of the here and now can do that. WOW – now to scrub the bathroom flair.
Mahe…just for the record Kyogo’s first was the shot to the keeper’s left, his second was a header. Also, yer a hard man to please if you didn’t see it as a fantastic team performance! More than 75 per cent possession, 6 goals from 12 shots on target, 13 corners…what more do you want man?
A word of caution, though, I don’t think we’ve been tested yet! Despite Dortmund’s apparent ropey start to both the season and to some of their games so far, they are a step up from where we are. Our £11m midfielder, who was quieter than I expected on Saturday but not anonymous, is our team’s most expensive signing. St Johnstone’s team was filled with loans and free transfers. Dortmund on the other hand have built a squad with a value of £450m. Of course, it’s the Champion’s League and an obvious step up in quality but there’s a danger too many are getting carried away by how we’ve played so far. None of which is designed to be negative, I’m looking forward to see how we get on tomorrow night but since Tommy Burns’ beautiful fitba how many times have we promised so much more than we’ve delivered…
Have to agree with McCaff’s post, the article is a wee bit harsh on the teams performance 😳
BAWHEID
I couldn’t say whether or not di Stefano’s testimonial was Jimmy’s finest hour. I’m happy enough to leave that to the testimony of those who witnessed it,who seem pretty unanimous about it.
I too was lucky enough to see Jimmy in the flesh, though not quite as early as that. He certainly excelled against Leeds, for example. Red Star Belgrade too. He was outstanding in our nine in a row year. Atletico certainly knew how dangerous he was!
When the wee man was on song, the crowd sang with him. To see him in full flight was simply a privilege.
PRESTONPANSBHOY
Can only beat the team in front of you. They were very poor, but probably because we stopped them any time they tried to play. Only one shot on target against us is proof enough of that.
And no team ever scored six from a bang average performance.

We’ll create chances in Dortmund – hopefully we’ll be just as clinical as we were in Perth.
Midfield is a bit of a conundrum.
Stick with Bernardo,or return Reo to the fold?
Me personally would be starting both in a midfield four, however we all know this isn’t going to happen.
I always considered Reo to be the most talented footballer at the club – he just hasn’t been the same player since that injury though.
If Reo doesn’t improve between now and January, I would be tempted to sell him and sign Lennon Miller in the window.
No room for sentiment in this game, sorry to say.
HH.🍀
Apparently, Man U have sounded out Inter’s Simone Inzaghi about replacing Ten Haag. Man U are a bigger club in a bigger league, but Inzaghi won Seria A and was a CL finalist. Not sure I would give that up for the manager killing Old Trafford
SkySports claiming the first goal correctly disallowed, even suggesting Trusty should have been sent off!
Mental.
Think the most disappointed individual in that stadium was referee Don Robertson.
Coupon was a mix of anger and pain after each Celtic goal was scored.
Hates us he does.
Thing shouldn’t be within a million miles of a Celtic game – then again it was good to see the hurt.

16 ROADS
Is that the Refwatch slot? Can’t remember the last time they stated that we were hard done by. Long ago turned into a joke.
16 Roads
I suggested going with a ‘4’ a few weeks ago but doubt it’ll happen
Reo is a terrific player on his day but he tends to be our worst player on his off days such as at Easter Road this season. I watched Engels quite closely on Saturday and liked some of what I saw. Always available and quite good at switching the play but nothing too brilliant. We’ve bought a lot of potential for sure – he is only just 21- but right now Bernardo looks a better player. But then again Paulo looked pretty insipid until the game with Livi just before Christmas almost 4 months after he signed.
Dortmund may have come too soon for us and could well be one to watch through the cracks of my fingers but unless we cave in a la Paris which could really set us back a lot I think our trajectory is upwards for quite a while.
Jimbo
BMCUWP – It was indeed thon Refwatch.
Not that I ever pay much attention to that nonsense – just watched it on the NewsNow Celtic site there.
Jimbo67 – Game Tuesday should be a cracker.
Actually looking forward to it,as opposed to dreading it.
Celtic will get opportunities to score, the only question is if we can take the chances when they are presented.
We live in hope CSC. 🍀

Good wee read, they mention the helicopter incident that you said about.
Never heard anything about it before until I read your post.
Speaking of helicopters – legend has it that Keith Moon tried to land a helicopter at Oliver Reed’s house – Reed started firing at the thing with a shotgun? 🤣🤣
Laters. 🍀 🚁
Jimbo67 and 16 Roads,
I agree with much of what you say. For me, there is no choice if we play with 3 in midfield. It has to be Bernardo. Apart from his goal threat, he is a harder worker than Hatate and, that, will be essential vs the Germans.
Assuming CCV is fit, my biggest worry vs Dortmund is in both sides of our defence. You even saw this vs STJ in the first half from a free kick taken from about half way into our half from StJ’s right side attack. The ball swept over our defence and a STJ player ran onto it at AJ’s position. Nothing occurred as he missed the ball but the chance was there. Dortmund will have seen that and, like everyone else, will know that GT can wander from the LB area. I expect to see late runs into our flanks causing us trouble.
I do not expect Valle to play in this game but you can see the quality that he has. He has been raised in the pass and run philosophy. Hopefully his teammates catch on to this soon. He wants to attack and seems good at it. Defensively? ….so far, not so strong, but if he was we would not be seeing him in the hoops.
I think the game in Perth revealed the following:
I could not ask more of what the Board/Manager has put together.
Doc’s appointment today so I shall not be around to accept the admiration of this post 😀

Jimmy Johnstone was just an enigma, unique, supremely talented, you run out of words trying to tie him down to one particular game.
!970 – 71 EC Quarter Finals verses Fiorentina: Celtic 3-0 Fiorentina Bertie Auld ran the show, I loved those Lilac Italian jerseys, though young at the time, I love Italy, Florence in particular, so paid particular attention to both those games, Bertie won the home leg himself.
Away leg in Florence – Jinky did the same although Celtic lost the away tie 1-0. Celtic got through to the semi finals, then played Leeds. Well, Jimmy ran that particular game, the Italians like the Madrid fans were awestruck by Jimmy’s talent, at the end of the game, Celtic wiki states he gave his jersey to a ball boy, you see a picture of Bobby Murdoch – Guisepi Longoni – Jimmy Johnstone, all three shirtless but happy. For me that picture showed what football was all about, opponents but friends in sport.
From 1988 we have played 12 times in Germany and not once returned with a win. Record is p12 w0 L10 d2. Will 13 be lucky this time around . We live in hope.
Our home record against German opposition is better P 12 W4 D2 L6
Never an easy game when draw against them regardless of how poor current form is.
Daizen Maeda disallowed goal after VAR intervention for Celtic vs St Johnstone for foul by Auston Trusty on Graham Carey
DG: “It’s a brilliant spot by the VAR because when I saw this clip I thought ‘Why’s he on the floor?’. But he caught him on the way through and the goal was disallowed correctly but whether it’s a red card I’m not sure.”
My overall opinion of Dermot Gallagher is he’s an attention seeking half whit and the above proves it, imbecile 🙄
16R
I think it was Johnny Cash who first told the helicoptor story, and said that KK got out the helicoptor holding beer and his demo tape. Apparently, KK said JC’s version wasn’t 100% accurate. I like to believe it is true. But true or not, it is one of the great rock and roll stories in history.
We (well, me) tend to think of the rock guys as crazy (the Keith Moons of the world … the Oliver Reed story is a good one!), but some of those old country guys could give them a run for their money.
Mahe,
Sorry, can’t agree with you on a few points.
I think it must have been ” Drinking Cooking Sherry Day ” in California.
That Arnie” I’ll be back ” has a lot to answer for 😁😁😁
Auldbhoy67 I think the last British team to beat Dortmund at home were Sevco (ick spit hurl puke) in 2022 around covid restricted days.
Incidentally Dortmund had a certain Jude Bellingham playing for them that night along with Marco Reus, Matts Hummell and Julian Brandt, albeit a pony tailed Erling Haaland was not available.
So I’m not too despondent about facing German sides, and think we might come away with a favourable result.
No sign of CCV

Hot take for the day …
if BR is going to continue with a 433 (which seems to be the case), and even if he isn’t, the first 2 names on the team sheet for me would be Bernardo and Engels… and Bernardo would be the deepest lying of the midfield, instead of Calmac … Calmac is not a Pirlo/deep lying playmaker type, nor is he a defensive midfielder. never has been, any more than he was a left back. but he has done the role because there was no one else … but I think there is now someone who would do it better…. So Calmac would compete with Hatate for the advanced midfield role … Calmac has a better shot, and gives a bit more energy, but Hatate is a better playmaker. so horses for courses for that one…
I too would like to see a switch sometimes to 4 man midfield, but it would be hard to drop either Kuhn or Maeda, as the former is creating so much and Maeda is one of the best forwards at defending I have ever seen, and his pressing is integral to how BR wants to play …
in any event, neither of changes are likely for tomorrow … you dont want to be making those sorts of changes in what will likely be the toughest game of the season… but something to consider going forward…
Mike in Toronto @ 3:49 pm,
Hope All’s Good…
As stated earlier imo, the team that started against St Johnstone and the way we were set up will be a massive clue as to the way we start the game
Agree with your point on Engels and Bernardo but noted it was Engels that played deeper
Although some thought he had a poor game the fact is “the heavy lifting”, was shared between him and Bernardo with Engels doing most of the set play work
This gave Calmac a freer role, that he seemed to thrive on
Schmeichel, Johnston, Scales, Calmac, Engels, Meada, Kuhn – all start
Then depending on the Manager’s preference and player fitness, starters are…
Taylor or Valle
CCV or Trusty
Hatate or Bernardo
Kyogo or Idah
You’d think most will get a game over the 100+ minutes
My preference
………………Schmeichel
Johnston – CCV – Scales – Valle
Engels – Bernardo – Callum McGregor
Nicholas Kuhn – Idah – Meada
Think BR&Co will opt for Taylor and Kyogo – obviously Trusty if CCV is not fit
Still as a wiser man than I said…
We’ll see…

How you keeping?
I typically see the European games, but usually only see the highlights/ extended highlights of the domestic games … sometimes I manage to see the domestic games after the fact, but not always …. so, my comments should always be taken with a grain of salt (what’s new? people will say).
but I like both Bernardo and Engels … two young guys that, if Celtic can hold on to them, you can build a team around… add something that has been missing from the middle since Wanayama… different players from VW of course, but both seem to have a bit of presence in the middle of the park
🙂
They’re different eh ?

Mike in Toronto @ 4:28 pm,
Alls good…
Wasn’t disagreeing at all with your Engels ~ Beranado thang… just noted what I perceived as the shift around in our midfield
Engels has looked very effective further forward and Bernardo had been very good playing deeper – the Sevco match a case in point
I’ve watched more football this season than I have for a long time, mostly delayed live but with Celtic TV, TNT and Premier as well as seeing the Celtic, there is the UCL, Europa, German, Spanish and Italian football live, delayed live or extended highlights

Iwao Hakamada, an 88 year old former boxer in Japan, recently had his 1968 conviction for a triple murder overturned after spending the last 56 years in jail, including 45 years on death row, after a new court determined that the police and prosecutors had withheld evidence and coerced a confession!
No word yet on whether the government intends to appeal the overturning of the conviction.

Hi Chairbhoy and Mike,
I’m taking a break from the blog until Halloween as I will be in transit ( a lot ) with no access to the usual sources, and also in some remote areas in the Hebrides, Cornwall and Wales without wifi. The trip was planned months ago, before I had dates of Celtic games, and unfortunately I will be somewhere above Iceland during the Dortmund game. I tried to change my ticket by one day, and the airline wanted double the price.
I do hope to be at the Aberdeen game on the 19th with certain dissolute reprobates, the Thistle-Livingston game on the 5th with ex-team mates ( scoundrels ) and the Leicester – Nottingham game on the 25th with some reprehensible ex-colleagues.
In a nutshell, I’ll either be traveling, in a pub, at a game or sleeping, but will as ever try to read the blog when I can, and even pen a few lines.
I just read Craig76’s latest post and fear that some of that is in my future. Could be the reverse of Sober October.🥳🍺🥃🍻🍷
I need to go pack, which I hate doing.😝
