Bhoys back on top

Well folks that’s another away fixture navigated with the points returning home. With the elements being harsh and the daylight fading early plus three games a week starting in earnest, this clash felt like the true beginning of winter football. Not that the away support were bothered, they came in their thousands including a certain Mags McGill.

The manager was brave in his decisions on how to approach this one. It was brave to key the same defense together, brave to drop our record signing especially with Callum out, brave to hand Luke a start.
His decisions were ultimately vindicated, Valle assist, ditto an assist from the fresh legs of Kuhn which made it look wise to hold him back until they tire, goal for Luke who was my MOTM. Brendan also looked wise trying Scales at left back, with Greg looking on, I wonder is he being phased out in anticipation of departure? It’s wise to give Cameron a run out, likewise James Forrest and Palma, and of course Adam Idah who bagged a trademark one touch finish from close range. I don’t have the stats but in my mind his chance conversion ratio is better than Kyogo since first coming up north to present day. I picture him being the starter soon. Given his half time team talk also clearly worked Brendan can be very content overall with his day’s work.

The match itself wasn’t a cracker, but rather interesting viewing. I had heard of the new kid on the block Miller, and straight from the off he looked dangerous, justifying the hype, but faded as time passed. It was a scrappy first half with neither team having much time or space to impose their gameplan on the opposition. McCowan had clearly decided to make an impact though, and our most dangerous player created and finished the breakthrough goal in sublime fashion lighting up not a great 45 minutes.

The second half saw a much more composed Celtic dominate while looking to finish them off. We did just that, AJ capped off wearing the armband with a goal, it was followed late on by a poacher’s finish. It was pretty routine apart from a shaky start, somewhat of a worrying trend now the word is clearly out because teams go at us from kick off too often for coincidence.

The Whistler also turned in a routine performance, ie abject. He denied a stonewall penalty on Daizen in the first half, then had the temerity to produce merely a yellow for an ankle breaker and potential career changing challenge that was certainly deliberate.
The bassa couldn’t stop us on the day though, and now they know they can’t it’s gotta really hurt.

At this stage there only looks to be one team that can stop us, and they don’t play in blue. My goodness they are consistent, grinding out a 1 nil victory is part and parcel of a successful season, and like other supporters the midweek Pittodrie clash holds more than just a passing interest,it’s almost unmissable now and not just because of the result but I’m curious to see if the Whistlers try and interfere with Aberdeen’s hotstreak. I get the feeling that come late Wednesday night the ref will be a topic of discussion.

Looking ahead, a midweek home match against Dundee is a nice opportunity on many fronts, and Aberdeen’s exertions at exactly the same time just may leave them more sapped than usual at the weekend which suits us because we shall want plenty of energy when RB Leipzig come to town.
3 good games in 6 days, each one harder than the last, each in different competitions. That’s life at Celtic, and that’s what the squad is for.
Three wins is the target, over to you Bhoys.

Morning all,

Mahe,

Decent summary of the game yesterday.

A concern from yesterday’s game, was moving Scales to left back when Greg Taylor was on the bench.
I thought it was a perfect afternoon to get some game time into Greg’s legs. Might be an indicator the Manager has different ideas ???

Anyway, it was an enjoyable game and my 3 for Jobo are

AJ
McCowan
Valle.

Ps
Just saw the news this morning, that some MP was fighting with a member of the public in Frodsham, Cheshire.

Just hope Frodshambhoy is in Tenerife and not on these shores, cozing havoc 😂😂😂

Greg can sign a new contract with another club in January. Maybe a more lucrative move for him than signing on again with us.

After the initial 15 mins yesterday we settled into our routine and were never really tested in the game. Agree about McCowan. Was my MOTM also. This guy looks eager to succeed every time he plays. An excellent addition for no money.
This was good use once again of the squad and I expect pretty much the same on Wednesday from Brendan. Bigger fish in coming week than Dundee without being disrespectful to them.

See we have a relative new MIB to be aware of by the name of Scott. He was the man in the middle yesterday along with Aitken. 3 big calls to help out der hun. A Connor Barron head high boot which never even received a yellow – a certain penalty to Saints and a disallowed goal which all resulted in assisting a 2-1 win. He was highlighted as one to watch in a junior game involving Cumnock prior to moving up the ladder.

The role(s) of full back now include inversion if required.
Valle is getting to grips with this whist Greg Taylor is the best at the club in this position.
Liam Scales does not look to have the physical capabilities, passing or running skills needed.
If that reads like I’m anti Scales I’m not.
Just as full back.
When CCV comes back and if, for some games, we go three at the back, then big Liam will be in that area… but he won’t be playing left back.

Morning all.

Well done Brendan and the Bhoys yesterday.

Just a wee reminder that the ‘Shipbank Shipwrecks’ will gather this Friday, 1st Nov (All Saints Day).

If you can get yourself along, you’ll not regret it.

Also you will witness BRRB returning back to his favourite art, consuming copious amounts of ale🍻🍻😂💚🍀

Its the ultimate catch 22 for us though. With no buy option Barca are gonna sell to the highest bidder and the better he plays, the less likely we will get him

VAR – Was brought in to be the great leveller, its not, there are just as many honest mistakes happening now as there was previously. As the biggest contributor to the VAR costs, we are still the most sinned against. Until the mindset of the officials are changed then there will never be an honest game, that’s what we all want to see. A bigot will always be a bigot, a bigot with a whistle will always be a bigot with a whistle and have the power to influence games. I have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes, but I wish I was certain that some things were being said.
The sound of bigotry still sings its song of hate.
The BBC sings it the loudest.

Morning all and Leggy, from Torremolinos, so I wasn’t involved in any Frodsham boxing matches at the weekend.

I found the Scales to left back thing interesting. I was saying last year that Scales was worth trying at left back. He played there for Aberdeen and was listed on Wikipedia as left back or centre half. He also has a better physique for a defender than Taylor. Lots of others on here said the same.
The only one that didn’t agree was Brendan.

Funny enough it’s only recently that I’ve started to appreciate Taylor yet, as Leggy says, he gets left on the bench when it’s an ideal time to get him going again.

Does anyone have an idea what’s going on.

Not many have fancied Taylor as a defender. Opponents continually target him.
I find it odd Brendan has taken until now to try Scales.
Contract refusal probably got a lot to do with it.
Thats odd as well as it looks like Brendan has improved him.

United have spent £375m net over the last three seasons, on recruitment.

Last year losses of £113m against total revenue of £662m.

Operational costs of £768m.

Similar income predictions for this season without CL.

A headache for the FA and UEFA re licensing requirements.

Another club worth looking at are Aston Villa.

They were fined for the late submission of their UEFA licensing application, this year

Villa have posted substantial losses over the last 2-3 years

I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a fair amount of Tipp-Ex used in that application.

Villa need to increase Revenue.

That’s why Villa appointed Celtic’s Commercial Director. Celtic have had to develop/grow their Marketing and Commercial revenue much more due to the disparity in domestic broadcasting income.

Sustainability will drive Revenue and turn loss making businesses into profitable businesses.

Sustainability is essentially about making money.

League structure, more games, better competition.

Soft cap on spending = cost control.

The gradual Americanisation of the business model.

The gradual Americanisation of the business model.

==
That is one way to look at it.
Football would always be a profitable business if the workers ie players were not able to make the demands that they do driven by supporters’ desire for their clubs to hire the best players regardless of affordability.

I made this point a good few years ago.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1617TBPOCzSfxtMfRWI9LUZgVQ3SlBOFDrj-vekfHEBo/edit?usp=drivesdk

It was always going to be a matter of time before that power was reduced, made easier as the consequences of paying over the odds and the pursuit of finding the means to do so manifest itself.

Not so much the Americanisation more the age old capital v labour war since the industrial revolution.

FSR arguably is a means of UEFA keeping control.

Salary caps presume that there are two parties involved- owners and players, and ignores the role of the fans in funding sports. I’ve always said I wouldn’t have as much of an issue with salary caps, if there was a corresponding cap on ticket prices

It might be a bit harsh on Ten Haag to be fired because of a shocking penalty decision on Sunday, but really,he has been a disaster at Man Utd. As would anyone else at that club. It has been a basket case for so long now that the big question is no longer who do they need to turn this round, but are they FUBAR’d?

Their results since Fergie left have been a disaster on the pitch, but generally their income stream has held up. As THEGOMBEENMAN points out, that is increasingly not the case. Although this is largely due to much reduced income from European participation,it might be the tip of the iceberg.

They have gone from probably the most high-profile club in world football to also-rans. For a club so heavily dependent on income streams from sponsorship and overseas merchandising (which are obviously related to success on the pitch),I reckon they are in real bother.

The next round of sponsorship negotiations are unlikely to be as lucrative. How many rich overseas fans will be happy to pony up a fortune for “The Man Utd Experience” while spending a fortune on air fares and accommodation, with hugely expensive tickets and merchandise on top? Will the lifelong fans be willing and able to take up the slack, when they have been treated as second-class citizens (oops, couldn’t resist!) for nearly two decades?

More to the point, which top managers and players will be willing to risk/sacrifice their reputation and their future on a project like this? Only those in search of a fast Buck and a payoff? I somehow doubt that they will be binning “over 140 applications” on the way to their next appointment. And I have no doubt at all that the appointment soon after that will be every bit as disastrous, just even more low profile-and unsuccessful-than this one is likely to be.

It’s an interesting topic with plenty of twists and turns.

EU Law being a fly in the ointment, I guess.

European soccer isn’t making as much money as it should given it’s global audience. Clubs offer considerable value. The value of the businesses will increase for the owners, if they embrace sustainability and increase revenue.

That’s one reason why the ECA are driving this. The other is the insanity of the cu6model.

Looking at the rough figures for United, they are a disaster.

Given FA and UEFA spending controls how much will they be able to spend, without cutting costs and increasing revenue?

That’s a reason why I took a look at the recruitment at Leicester and Liverpool. It’s not personal but in the emerging environment, that kind of loss isn’t sustainable.

Tickets?

Who knows?

The bigger profit is in the corporate type tickets. How will that fit with the European football culture?

Taken to an extreme, I guess soccer is inherently uncompetitive due to the disparities in revenue, disparities that can’t reasonably be reduced by clubs outside the big leagues.

How will this be viewed by Competition Law?

Who knows?

Even if (taking things to an extreme) US type caps came in…Where do the profits go?

Ultimately the underlying value of the business increases.

Auldheid,

I had a think about where I first heard Celtic talk about FSR…I’ll post a video in a minute.

So if you want to cheat and go under the radar or at least not be highlighted in that show then you do it by not involving VAR as Calum Scott and Greg Aitken did yesterday

Apparently Marca, the Real Madrid linked paper, had announced that Vinicius was this year’s ballon d’or winner, but reports are now that that is not true. And further rumor is that no one from Real will be attending.

If true, would have to think that this means Rodri would be the likely winner. Hard to argue with him… PL and Euro winner while Vinicius won both La Liga and CHampions league. So, both had great seasons.

However, one other player – Dani Carvajal – won both LaLiga and the CL with Real, and also won the Euro with Spain.

Good evening, friends.
A decent number of voters so far but another 20 would be needed to make this the highest turnout of the season. But even failing that, your votes are even more significant for this game as it’s very tight with 4 hours until the polls close. Joint leaders on 54 and 4th to 6th only separated by 6 votes. Superbru Round 9 Update

On a weekend where none of our 70 punters predicted a win for St. Johnstone, we might have expected a low winning score this weekend but some folk managed to pick their way nicely through the remaining 5 fixtures and score healthily.

Our top performers this week were:-

1= fitbabhoy & Spootiemad- 10.5 pts
3= fess 19 & The class of 67- 9 pts

As for the bottom dwellers, we had 2 guys Angel Gabriel & Chalmersbhoy who failed to predict 6 and 3 fixtures respectively and yet still managed to finish above our bottom 20 performers as a result of “default picks” which means they get allocated the preferred pick of the rest of the QNQS community. This approach is not recommended as you are only allowed 15 default picks per season.

Those managing to underperform our non-predictors included:-

joint 68th- mckenna_88 & Garry Postecoglou (Sobriety is not a surefire approach)-2 pts
70th- all on his Tod- the ever unreliable Friedorfer- our Hearts & our Hibs- 1.5 pts

The overall leaderboard now reads:-

1.- The Token Tim- 70 pts (Julie’s picks continues to boost her man’s ego)
2.-Gaz- 66.5 pts
3= BC Milan, Cosy Corner Bhoy & Big Archie- all on 62 pts

Whereas down in the depths, keeping company with the Pseudoliparis Snailfish & the Dumbo Octopus, we find:-

68th – An Tearmann- 37 pts
69th- Jonny The Tim- 35 pts
70th- BelmontBrian63- 34.5 pts

I am noting a disproportionate amount of Shipbank regulars crowding at the bottom )Big Jimmy is 4th bottom)- maybe Jonny needs to join them and get honorary membership. Leggy’s membership is under review as he’s flying too high.

~Round 10 starts again on Wednesday night with 6 SPFL fixtures- starting from 7.45pm for the first deadline. Vote early and vote often!

Adam Idah is in a protective boot after the shocking challenge from Liam Gordon on Sunday.

They’re going to see how his ankle reacts later in the week, but you’d have to believe he’s a major doubt for Wednesday.

But the sending off was harsh according to Stuart Kettlewell.
