Winner takes all
I opted for this articles title because I’m convinced the victors of tomorrow’s clash shall actually lift the Cup. Whilst it would be fantastic for Aberdeen to claim the first trophy of the season a clean sweep by Celtic would be fitting, and a sign of progress. Signs of progress are there to be found, our results bear that out, but yet on the actual park despite flying out of the blocks, team form hasn’t been sparkling lately. The old football cliche about a good side wins whilst not playing well holds a large element of truth, but a team cannot just shine at the start and trundle through. And that’s where today’s clash enters the equation.
Due to the fixture list, clearly Celtic will wish to avoid extra time and penalties, clearly Celtic will wish to win the game in the first hour then ring the changes with Tuesday nights tough task in mind. And clearly Brendan won’t be under supporter pressure should we fail to navigate the tie, having credit in the bank plus bigger fish to fry.
The answer,,,go at them. Attack, attack, attack.
That’s one way to rekindle our early season form, take the handbrake off and in true Ange-ball fashion simply keep moving the ball forward and take our numerous opportunities created while limiting theirs.
Easy words to type though.
Converting chances is not a particular forte of the side right now, with our Japanese talisman in particular being guilty of spurning more than I would like. However, and I keep pointing this out, he just loves the Champions League for personal reasons, and given Adam started the last CL game, and given he got a bad knock at the weekend so will more than likely start today’s game on the bench, and given Kuhn and Maeda are fresh after being rested, the wee man can seal a starting slot on Tuesday with a big performance today. This gives me much encouragement and the gambler in me would fancy backing him to bulge the old onion bag.
In reality there’s goals throughout our team, and we’ve scored enough to be in contention no matter the competition, we’ve scored 9 more than our opponents in the league whilst conceding 6 less, but as we all know two of them came from our very opponents to cancel out our two, in our own house. As we all know, they just scored two against the other half of Glasgow, in their own house. And finally they shall obviously have extra support given the neutral venue, so just attacking and outscoring them might sound like a pipedream, but yet I honestly view it as our best tactic on the day.
We certainly have the tools in our locker. Any of Kuhn, Maeda, Bernardo, Reo, Engels, and now AJ can notch up a goal, our cut and thrust carried out at speed has served us well, and Big Cam is back is back to lower the odds of getting countered plus Kasper is in fine form which has somewhat slipped under the radar of most but not all. I’m of the opinion if Celtic decide to really go for a team and put them to the sword, they can do just that. This belief just adds another layer of anticipation to a showcase event that captures the imagination, because Aberdeen getting absolutely pumped just hasnt happened. Yet.
That’ll end someday and there’s no time like the present.
There’s no point in saying we would be doing them a favour letting them focus on the league with only one more game to go in the competition, but I’m extra curious to see their managers approach. He has the luxury of no midweek fixture so asking his players to put everything into this one-off clash is a given, but given we went two up against them and our defensive general is back, asking for exactly the same again is risky. As is attacking us given we are great on the counter. As is waiting for the starters to tire given our bench is strong right now.
I do believe he shall be in a bit of a quandary with regards team tactics, again those are easy words to type.
Their best bet is to start very quickly (again) and hope to score putting the onus on us, then defend their lead and break when possible, which is exactly how I think Leipzig shall approach Tuesdays game so in theory this clash is well timed and good preparation.
My great expectation is that we walk away from this saying ‘what a great game he had’ meaning one of the Hoops grabs the game by the scruff of the neck and dominates proceedings. The Kuhn show wouldn’t surprise me, nor the Maeda show, the Idah impact etc, however given Brendan’s liking of Bernardo in Europe I’m secretly hoping he starts and plays a blinder. He’s won games for us before, he’s a smashing find and signing, and I would love a real statement performance from him today, a performance that demands his inclusion in the starting eleven because (to me) he’s the type of player one could build a squad around given he’s still young and has many attributes. I’d start him, order him to score, haul him off and tell him to get ready for Ze Germans arriving.
If he’s dropped for Reo who I believe done well in Bergamo (haven’t seen the game) then the same instructions. The point is whoever starts today should start then, with the aim of cementing their European starting slot. I believe that’s the most sensible approach, best for consistency, and our best bet to actually take another precious three points at Europe’s top table. Defeat today opens the door for some changes, resounding victory for the starters closes the door, simples. I’ll toss Valle into that equation, and starting him or Greg should give us a real good insight into the new pecking order at leftback. The Spaniard is more than likely one goal or another assist from winning that tussle, and if I know that he certainly should.
It’s simply a great match up, the current juggernauts going head to head, and Scottish football should be thankful for the freshness on offer, the resurgence of the northerners. This tie has a very honest feeling to it unlike the dreaded Old Firm, both clubs are on the right side of the law, both sides got where they are through honest endeavor, and both sides are definitely not relying on the refs to bail them out.
It’s the best domestic game yet, and there’s no blue hue involved.
I’ll state it now, the New Firm is much better than the Old Firm. Better on the pitch, better on the conscience, better for the national sport overall.
Long may this continue.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.
⭐️👏☘️👍🍾
That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.

In addition to the nominated treble (see above) there is also a weekly 6-team acca. Each of us is looking for a nailed on certainty, but there’s no such thing! But we only make one selection each, and all we ask is…
If yer daft enough to follow our advice, put a quid on each for the nominated charity as well!
The current drive got a £400 boost from this a couple of weeks back, and we notched up another win on Wednesday night,so we are hoping to build on that.
Go on,folks. A quid? What are you waiting for?
Please note the return of our SATURDAY NAPS Competition on 19th October. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so now.
Although it is free to enter, the prize money,50% provided by the site and 50% by 16 ROADS,is well worth it!

G64- hopefully you are well big guy,I kinda disagree, it’s difficult for guys to come in without playing first team minutes, to be at the pace of the game ,for me Brendan done the right thing in giving guys a run in midweek, when can you do that? A lot of games coming up so get them all up to speed as best we can HH…
Bada Agree mate however those players given the opportunity failed to impress. BR arguably made too many changes against Dundee. It’s all about finding the right balance HH
We need to defend miles better against the sheep than we did in the second half @ CP and the SC semi final 🙈 HH
Thelin will try and bully our midfield tomorrow and punt the long ball over the top. Cool hand Luke to start HH
Luke is cup tied, and BR should in no way play that midget Taylor, he’s rank rotten
ASWGL 👍
It’s late so this is probably pissing into the wind.
COMPARISON BETWEEN CELTIC AND THE DONS
Who is going to triumph?
The answer lies in volume!
Examining the 10 games in the league so far, we see:
Celtic have outscored the Dons by 29 to 20. Similarly, on goals conceded Advantage Celtic! Celtic have conceded 3 whereas the Dons have leaked 9. In mitigation, 2 of the 3 that Celtic conceded were to the Dons.
Celtic seem to have the advantage in shooting, 7 of our goals have come from outside the box. The Dons connected just the once from distance.
Celtic make many more passes than the Dons, 7282 versus 4100 but, of course, it depends what kind of passes are being generated. Taylor to Calmac; Calmac back to Taylor gets us nowhere. That happens a lot. The Dons fire a lot more long passes than we do, 554 versus 406. So they are capable of getting up the park quickly. This might be Thelin’s major innovation to the Dons’ play. Note their first goal at Parkhead.
However, only 35% of these are accurate, whereas Celtic have an impressive 61% success rate.
The Dons are credited with being a tall team, however Celtic have a better success rate in aerial duels at 57% versus 51%. Still, they will be a threat at free kicks and corners, as will we.
Thelin will be urging discipline from his team. The Dons have twice the number of yellow cards (27) as Celtic. If the ref gives out some early cards the Dons could be in trouble.
The final statistica is loss pf possession. The Dons lose the ball about 10% more than we do. This can be critical in a cup tie.
In summary, Celtic have more shots than the Dons, 152 vs 79; the same is true for shots on goal ; we pass the ball more often, with almost twice the activity in the opposition half than the Dons. However, here is the rub…The Dons have a higher conversion rate, 25% bs 19%.
Statistically, the Dons are in with a good chance, but I expect experience and possession will be crucial.
Bring it on. This is it from me for a wee while. Enjoy the game.
Rebus
Chairbhoy – Thank you for your kind comment yesterday, coming from your good self it meant a lot.
Awe Naw – Yes, indeed bring it on.
Allowing our opponents a win today would be psychological disaster.
They are a team on the up and with our fragility under pressure we could become vulnerable.
The Dons are a good not great team but in the league as our rivals I expect them to receive help from officialdom in their permanent attempts to dethrone us.
Brendan needs to send out a team who let the Dons know who is boss.
Good morning friends and Happy Matchday!
For the last couple of seasons the Dandies have been a lost ship, rudderless and clueless.
Alan Burrows (remember him at Motherwell is their newish CE) he makes a difference, so after the much admired Barry Robson they sought out something different, no – way did they expect the difference that Jimmy Thelin made, his was, still is a three year project, the man who took Elfsburg to second top, twice in the Swedish League, he too makes the difference, he has been a great appointment. He brought in these players and retained a few of the existing players……..
Gavin Malloy – centre – back from Shelbourne.
Peter Ambrose striker from Upjest.
Heltne Nilson – Midfielder and Leader from Brann, (knows him well to drive his team on).
Dimitar Mirlov – Goalkeeper (he inherited from St. johnstone) good find.
Topi Kekinen – Forward from HJK Helsinki, good striker.
Ante Palaverso – Midfielder from Troyes.
Moah McDonnell – Defender from Larne.
Brought in on loan – Kevin Nisbet Ex Hibernian.
It’s clear that there has been a massive change of personnel at Aberdeen FC, but no players that should be able to challenge Celtic FC., Though Thelin puts his faith in a good team spirit and a strong midfield to drive the the team on, as this season is about 25% through their confidence has grown, personally I think that its his bond with his team leader Nilson that is helping them to establish success on the park, so far.
BUT WE ARE CELTIC – we have the creative players to open them up and we have an elite leader in Brendan Rodgers. I believe strongly in our team- KTF.
This one’s for you Bobby – Mahe – Not a chance for the Bird from Les blues, puck, puck.
Aberdeen put a lot of physical and emotional effort into Wednesday’s win and they will have got a bounce off of that. That bounce isn’t always positive as we have witnessed with Celtic many times. Two quick high intensity matches with lot’s at stake against high calibre opponents this particular Aberdeen squad is yet to experience. The fact that it’s a neutral game will help them in this matter. We will attempt to get the tie completed by half time so that we can take advantage with our superior squad if it’s not over by half time. So that we can rest and protect players for Tuesday. They will be aware of this and how we started against them at Celtic Park and sit in. The last thing we need is extra time here today. Carter Vickers back will help with our build up play. What will really help is massively improved performances from our wide men. Kuhn excepted.
I’m off see Bochum getting skelped today but will be back for the start of the game.
Good Squad management could see this being a great week for us.
Rebus,
Good analysis. I expect the Dons will benefit from some preferential refereeing. It will also be interesting to see how much long ball. The long diagonal to the left back area our weakness they’ve exposed many times before but I can’t see Valle being dropped for Taylor or Scales after his performance last week unless we have Tuesday on our minds. Carter Vickers back is good news but not for the ball over the top hence Trusty to play in his favoured position. Maeda, Forrest, Palma, Yang have been passengers for far too long. One of them needs to show up today.

A good analysis.
We were outdone in our last semifinal v Aberdeen with the high ball to the back post ( left side area).
A change of personnel in that area -Trusty/ Valle – to negate that tactic?
Stopping the deep crosses from our right would help in the first instance!
Over to Kühn n AJ.
A tough game in preparation for an even tougher CL tie.
Games to relish.

Good to see MAGUA up and about again. Hope you all kept BIGRAILROADBLUES on the straight and narrow (somehow, some hope!)
In terms of prestige and financial reward, the Leipzig game is far more important than today’s.
If given the option of losing today ( with the Dons going on to win the final) and Celtic winning on Tuesday, would you take it ?
That’s a yes from me.
There is not a single player in that Aberdeen squad that I would swap for our strongest starting 11. Not one.
Bring our quality to the park from the first whistle, eliminate slack passes and defensive brain farts, and the result is a forgone conclusion.
Newcastle one up. Excellent goal
According to pundit Barry Glendenning thon Lennon Miller will be heading to Italian football and we’ve missed the boat.
AFTERNOON ALL AND JIM AND MAGUA magua great to see you out and about and enjoying yourself in the pub,.you deserve it buddy.H.H 👍

BP,
The old Celtic end at Hampden was like an SAS assault course.
We were lucky to get out of there alive!
BAD
Bloody nightmare. If it was windy,it took bloody ages to get the dust out of your hair and clothes. And even worse if it rained.
Big Packy
Thanks, Joan. You’re a ⭐.
Hail Hail.
Bobby,
How was that ever passed fit to hold thousands of people? The terrace was basically a wooden board holding in a load of dirt. Looked like someone’s old fireplace!
If it wasn’t for the crash barriers there would have been carnage in there.
In the Irvine CSC absolutely mobbed already
