A Blast From The Past – Part 3

Nostalgia and Celtic Supporters go together like salt and vinegar, so today I return to the never ending well to refresh Timdom about another ex hero, and one who can honestly say ‘I Captained the Hoops!’.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

“Fancy a Scandinavian International defender Mahe?”
“Hmmm”
“Experienced and a beast to boot.”
“Stop teasing me!”.
“Honestly, 50 caps and past Club Captain!”
“Out of our range son.”
“Mahe, he’s on a free and wants to join!”
“Which God did I please? Get that pen in his hand right now!”

When judging a past player I often ask myself one question,,given what you now know, would you sign him again? With Colin Healy and Effrain Juarez, the answer is no, but with today’s player, I’m leaning towards yes, for personal not professional reasons.

His two year stint at the club just didn’t really work out on the field, infact he spent much of it on the treatment table, but when he did take the field and especially on the two occasions he took the Captains armband, my goodness he was a sight to behold.

He was the white Bobo Balde, and like Bobo wasn’t a great footballer per se, but I feel bad typing that because in their days the game was much more physical and less technical, starting the play from the back was almost unheard of. These days a brute just won’t cut it at the top, and our protagonist joined just as football was switching and asking more than winning headers and personal duels, which at times left him looking outdated. Being 33 and huge his lack of pace never helped his cause, but I can honestly understand signing him up because not only was he worth a shot being free but good God he was scary to even look at, I can’t imagine what was going through the opposition strikers heads. He wasn’t an oaf given he was his sides first choice penalty taker for spells, but rather bloopers seemed to follow him,,,such as an own goal for his national against England at Wembley, and shockingly a first minute red card in a vital away European Qualifier.

Have you guessed who it is yet?

A poor decision here, a string of different partners in central defense there, another injury bringing the sidelines,,and before you know it the big man was a scapegoat on the park for what we now refer to as the ‘kissing frogs’ strategy,,the then purse controller was spending minimally hence a freebie was quickly ushered into Parkhead, and once the numbers were deemed sufficient the manager just had to get on with it. While I’ve no doubt the manager wanted him because of what he could bring, a wise head holding together a young defense, he simply wasn’t that man due to the mixture above. Sometimes he did pull it out of the bag becoming our defensive general, he wouldn’t be bottom of the POTY competition for instance.

But ultimately, although I like the player, he was just the wrong man at the wrong place at the wrong time. Not just at Celtic, I’m talking about Scottish football in general. The refs were starting to target ‘man mountain’ defenders whilst also helping their chosen side to lifeline victories in the final years of that clubs existence. He had no pace but was expected to form a high line leaving space, he wasn’t technical enough to burst through the gap and start something, and a lifetime of tough football was taking its toll on his body.
If born a thousand years ago there would be many songs about him, for he’s exactly the type of viking leader I imagine leading hundreds in laying siege or killing and plundering, with the ‘oh shit, look at the size of him!’ fear factor.
That’s more than likely why he was actually offered the armband.

Big Daniel Majstorovic has almost no internet history Celtic, few of his performances are immortalized on Timternet for eternity, but it’s a matter of fact that he pulled on the Hoops and as such he has earned his rightful place as todays Blast From the Past.

I hope you enjoy this type of article, if you don’t let me know, but no matter what, please give us all your recollections of the player. Yesteryears Hoops deserve to be recalled and discussed, for they lived the dream that we all helped create, and each and all are a part of our past whether we wish it or not.

Thanks,
Mahe.
If you ever fancy penning some words about an ex-player that intrigued you, we would be more than pleased to publish it.

Emdy fancy a great night out? We got this from our good friend,Frank, who many of you will already know either in person or as VFR.

Not sure if you know, but my wife Jacky came out of retirement a couple of years ago to run St Margaret’s adoption agency, the only Catholic adoption agency left in the UK. She now has it back on its feet after some significant issues.

I have been roped in as an Ambassador for the charity and one area I am looking at is fundraising. My big ticket item at the moment is a dinner dance we are running in the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 22nd November at 7:30. This is the first of what we intend to be an annual event to coincide with the Feast Day of St Margaret of Scotland, our Patron Saint (November 16th).
So as you can imagine, I have the begging bowl out! I am contacting like-minded people to see if they are willing to take a table for the event (or just some tickets). Individual tickets are £50 with the tables at £500. We are also looking for sponsorship for the event, ranging from £5k for the event sponsor down to advertising in the programme and on-screen on the night – ranging from £250 to £1000 depending on size and placement/regularity of the ads.
There will be a raffle and charity auction on the night, so we are looking for prizes and auction items for both of those. We may also look at naming tables and allowing some advertising on tables if there is an appetite for that.

Tickets are selling very well, but there are still a few available

MAHE

The history of Celtic is filled with players who divided the support, the love ‘em or hate ‘em type. I suppose the above article puts Majstorovic into that category too. Though your opinion might,in this case,be a minority.

He certainly had some good games for us,but not enough to even elevate him to the status of cult hero, not for me. You compared him to Bobo,a cult hero if ever there was one,but while Bobo was a scary proposition for our opponents,Majstorovic was a scary proposition for his colleagues and the fans.

Of course, his cause wasn’t much helped by the fact that his defensive partners chopped and changed faster than a night at the speed dating, nor by the bad injury he picked up in the last half of his final season with us,but overall he made us wistful for the days of Bobo,Mjallby,Vargas and Vega. Christ, maybe even The Heid.

I like my Celtic defenders to be scary b@stards, so I was a fan.
I think he had a couple of serious injuries in his 2 seasons with us.
Did he not break his jaw playing for us?
Also seem to remember him getting a bad one while away with Sweden.
Would have played alongside people like Rogne and Mulgrew, so he probably could be forgiven for not looking like Paulo Maldini.
Was watching a game featuring him last night..the game we battered the Huns 3-0 and Hooper made David Weir wish he’d retired a couple of years earlier!
Considering he was still getting picked by Sweden well into his 30’s, I think it’s safe to say he was well rated.
Not spectacular but a competent big defender 💪

Daniel Majstorovic was a decent, no nonsense defender, bit like McManus and McCarthy….yet, look at the likes of Virgil, Elliot, Rieper etc….then not even un the same stratosphere. Then you have guys who could play and mix it up like Stubbs and Mjallby.

I suppose it’s a matter of trying to get the blend right though.

Don’t know what Ange promised Tottenham he would achieve while being interviewed, but I’m pretty sure none of us believed he would win the league for them.

I think Danny Blanchflower was capt the last time they actually won the league – 1960, or thereabouts! (May have been the first double in England)

Very few people leave Paradise to go onto better things, eh? Being manager of Celtic might just end up being the pinnacle of his career.

As much as I liked him, he is not in the same league as Brendan, so I’m glad he went when he did.

Would he have got to the premiership without his 2 years with us? Probably not, but I had a feeling he’d regret his decision to use us as a stepping stone, rather than staying and building something special at Parkhead.

Anyway, you can feel the clock is now ticking @WHL.

He did a great recovery job at Celtic but was running the players into the ground as was his way.
We really stalled midway through season 2 but recovered to take the title and the cup.
He’s never won anything in year 3 at a club so I was happy that he left when he did.

Doesn’t mean I want him to fail at Spurs. I would like him to do well.

22 year old Real Madridstarle, Marc Cucarin, who was thought to be the heir to Xabi Alonso, has had to retire at age 21. He suffered a knee injury in a CL game against Celtic in 2022. Complications, including a post op infection, followed and after two years, Alonso had been forced to retire

There has been some talk recently about Idah’s performances since he came back as our player. I share the concerns after seeing his efforts bs Killie. I kept getting flashbacks to Amido Balde. Remember him? He came in with hopes that he could be developed into a fine player, much as has been said about Adam. Amongst other things, the transfer fee makes Adam’s case different.

I really, really want Idah to succeed, not just because he seems a nice guy, but because he is a flag waver for a new type of recruitment at Celtic. Engels is another.

I decided to compare Adam’s stats for this league season with others, either in his position, or capable of playing there. I selected Semenyo, basically a winger but capable of playing as a striker. The interesting thing about him is that he moved from a Championship team to the EPL for around the same fee as Adam. Now he is valued at double that fee.

I chose three strikers from the SPL…Erik Sokler(Aberdeen), Simon Murray(Dundee), Dessers(Sevco). None of these demanded a fee similar to what we paid for Adam, but each does a job for their team.

I examined a broad array of stats including total shots, accuracy, total touches, touches inside the box, goals, passing accuracy….15 items in all.

I shall try to summarise the findings so as not to create a doctoral thesis 😀

I’ll do it in a separate posting(s).

One of the most important results in our recent history:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/scotland/15329354

Lenny was on the verge of resigning, result propelled us to league champions.

Miracle title win from what looked like an impossible situation – think we were trailing the old club by 10,or 12 points at this stage?

Why did they rip up a perfectly good playing surface?

Majstorovic was woeful that day but managed to set up our equalising goal – summed up his time at Celtic.

Not sure who the MIB was,bad cheat though from what I can recall.

It should be said that Adam was involved in fewer games than the others. Games played ranged from 8(Adam) to 12(Murray) so my stats are averaged per game played.

Here is where Adam outperformed the others:

Total shots, goals per game, touches inside the box, aerial duels. Not a bad set of results and quite different from what I would have thought, given how he looked vs Killie.

He was joint top with Murray on getting shots on goal.

Here is where he did not fare as well:

possession lost…he ties with Semenyo as poor in possession;

he has no assists(in the league);

he is poor at competing for the ball on the ground, which fits with his loss of possession performance.

He is middle of the road in the following area:

conversion rate(18%) whereas Murray and Dessers have 29% and 22% respectively.

So, what does it all mean? Firstly, it is early days. Adam has been involved in just 8 games in the league. Mid season would be a better time to judge his performance. Frankly, his stats look a lot better than I thought they would. Semenyo is regarded as a success down South, but Adam’s stats stand comparison with him. Semenyo is better on the ground, but Adam outshines in the air, as might be expected. Adam needs to a) not lose the ball as much, and b) get some assists on the board.

Was at that Kilmarnock game, at the end all the goals went in.

Killie’s First two goals looked offside, 2nd definitely was.

The ref denied Stokes a stonewall penalty just before he scored from the freekick, he was fuming. For some strange reason even at 3-0 I thought we’d still win, weird.

As long as I can remember, the Spurs job has always been something of a coach killer, so question have to be asked about what is going on behind the scenes there.

I’m pretty sure AP would take his CV over Brendan’s … and so would I. If my memory is correct …

AP – 2 NSL titles with South Melbourne, as well as an Oceanic Club Championship
2 titles with Adelaide United, including best season in Australian football history
Coached Oz to World Cup 2014 and won the Asian Cup in 2015
in 2019 coached Yokohama to its first Japanese league title in 15 years..

BR .. promotion with Swansea
first Liverpool manager since in over half a century not to win anything in his first 3 years
league cup with Leicester

so far, there have been a few very good CL games for Celtic this season, but a bit early for a coronation ..after the Dortmund game, most analysts were expecting the end of Scottish Euro football due to the anticipated drop in co-efficient. If the teams continue to develop under BR this season and the next, then I would likely reconsider my choice… but for now, I’d still pick AP over BR.

Good analysis on Adam. I too want him to succeed, but he has to show something very soon or I reckon we’ll see him traded.

His only hope is that as BR marquee signings, then he’ll be given a good opportunity to succeed. However, as I say, it has to begin soon as both he and Kyogo are not delivering the goods.

How many good managers have tried to deliver a title to WHL? They just have never been able to get it done. I always liked watching them as a kid,, they always had fantastic players and always tried to play proper football.

Good article. I’m enjoying these wee wanders down memory lane. As has been pointed out, Dan may have been a better player if those around him were better. A classic example of this is big Alan Stubbs. Stubbs was an ok player for Celtic, but became a truly outstanding player, when he was partnered with Danish phenomenon, Marc Rieper. Thanks for that Wim. Arguably Wim The Tim’s best signing.

Mike,

His record speaks for itself, mate.

His record in cup competition is phenomenal …you can’t do these things unless you are top class. Is it one cup tie he’s lost? And it was on that shifty rubber carpet at Killie.

But above all he’s done, just listening to the man you can tell he knows exactly what he is doing …do you get that feeling when you listen to someone like Clement for example?

My biggest wish for the club right now is Brendan staying with us for years to come. I think he has proved lately that he is maturing as a coach too, and he might well be just reaching the peak of his powers.

I just think the Liverpool job came a tad early for him.

I sometimes forget how young BR was when he took the Liverpool job (dont think he was even 40, was he?), so there is something to that… but the modern trends seems to be towards younger managers.

Mourinho was 37 I think when he started at Benfica, and just over 40 when he won the EL and CL with Porto … Amorim was I think 35 when he started managing Braga, and around 38 when he won his first title with Porto …

it is increasingly a young man’s game, it seems

Amorim’s story is interesting …. only 14 cap for his country… but timed them well, as he managed to play in 2 World Cups!

Even though he was still in his 30s (Young for a coach at this highest level) Liverpool saw enough to think he was capable of taking on a job of that magnitude. Considering everything too, he came within a hairs breadth of doing something really spectacular.
