Don’t Panic!
Morning,all.
It was an enjoyable read yesterday as we compared notes first on Dan Majstorovic and then the respective merits of our current manager and his predecessor. The latter subject came about because of a rather amusing little pastiche of Ange appearing on Masterchef and refusing to serve up what was requested. His way or the highway, just as has always been the case with him.
We all saw that during his brief two years with us. Quite frankly, it was a total waste of time to question his methods. We all saw how he dealt with the SMSM when he struggled to get results at the start of his tenure-mainly because the players were struggling to adjust to “the system”-and we roundly applauded him for it. Mainly because even though the results certainly weren’t falling our way at the time-and ten points from our first seven league games is all the proof you need for that-we could see what was slowly starting to take shape.
I think the first time I criticised him in an article was after the away defeat in Leverkusen. While the trip itself was memorable and the game itself will live long in the memory, Ange saw fit to take off our three forwards that night when we were leading 2-1. Not that he wanted to play with one up front while shoring up the midfield and defence, oh no. He replaced them with three other forwards, none of whom was in form at the time or even particularly match fit. Naturally enough, the ball didn’t stick up front, and the German side scored two very late goals to eke out a 3-2 victory.
To say that I was furious really doesn’t do the situation justice, and it was noticeable in the match review I published in the morning. But one dud review in two years isn’t really the kind of thing that’s going to get the big Aussie sticking needles into my wax effigy, and I think I’m safe enough from his wrath. I won’t say that he went with my blessing 18 months ago,but he certainly went with my thanks. And that is still the case.
As is another thing I said at that time, that the Spurs job was not the type of job to get too attached to. Daniel Levy has never had a reputation for suffering fools gladly, and rarely has he been easy to part from a brass farthing more than he thinks is appropriate in the transfer market. On top of that, he was rapidly gaining a reputation for intolerance and impatience towards his many managerial appointments, firing them out the door before the ink was even dry on their contracts. Which is why I said that I hoped that he wouldn’t take out a four-year lease on a property, and that the compensation figures agreed in his contract were absolutely watertight.
Brendan Rodgers arrived shortly afterwards on a three year contract, and the press were quick with the needle, asking him how long he intended to hang around. He sent them off with a flea in their ear, and not only do I expect him to see out those three years, I fully expect him to extend it between now and the summer. Ange gave us five trophies out of the six he competed for, and BR is well on the way to matching that in his own first two years. Again, some of the players took some time to adjust to a new system, but adjust they did. There are few within the squad who haven’t already improved during his time here, and those that either cannot or will not are quite simply no longer with us-or no longer under consideration for a shot at glory. And REBUS67 gave us some good news too, that Idah’s stats are much better than his bare returns would indicate.
But then we turn to a player whose form is a genuine concern for many of us. Our Japanese talisman, Kyogo. Thirty goals in the season before Brendan arrived, and a bloody nightmare for defences to deal with. A will-o-the-wisp, he is so difficult to track when he is on his game. Whether it be the flashing run to the near post for a finish, the angled run to get on the end of a through ball, or even finding space in a crowded box for a free header, he was dynamite. Now though? Not so much. And that is as much a puzzle as it is a worry.
Watching from the stands or our armchairs,we fans so often see him still making the runs, still finding space, but the final ball in his direction is so often either lacking or non-existent. And if we are honest, he has missed a few very good chances already this season that he would previously have put away with his eyes shut. I’ve not given up on him yet, far from it, and this isn’t really a critique of him as much as a simple sense of bewilderment as I search for the reasons behind his current form. He is still getting into position for the chances, so we have to think that he will suddenly click again. Few great players lose it overnight, after all.
The good news is that he is back in the squad for his national team, and it may well be that his continued omission was weighing him down. Or maybe he’s just been missing the occasional fix of his Mum’s home cooking, and the Japanese equivalent of a roll ‘n’ skwerr is all that is needed to get him back on the straight and narrow! God knows that is first on my list when I head home next month,I can tell you.
Players lose form for all sorts of reasons, and top players can adjust to any system. There is no way that BR was going to adjust his own system, tried and tested and tweaked over the years, to suit one player, so the wee fella will have to get used to it. In fairness to him, his recent poor returns have been down to uncharacteristically bad finishes rather than not being in the right place at the right time, which suggests that he is adapting fine in most respects. Still a worry of course, but we should always remember that form is temporary, class is permanent.
So yes,I do have my concerns. I would have to be both blind and stupid not to. But I am far from the panic stage yet, and I’m confident he will be our talisman again soon, terrorising defences as only he can. A couple of goals in his next few games will set him up nicely for the League Cup Final against his favourite team, and wouldn’t it knock the smirks off a few coupons for him to absolutely crucify them again as usual? It would certainly silence the idiots who are telling us that Dessers is better than him!

Good morning
No reason to panic just yet.
Kyogo’s stats are a goal every two games ( 79 in 149), and significantly 8 in 11 versus the Hun.
Dessers isn’t in the same conversation, he’s as much derided as loved amongst their execrable fan base.
Ignore and file under desperate to be relevant.
There’s more to being a striker than just being the one that puts the finishing touch to moves.
Watch the wee guy closely, his movement is fast and intelligent, and is meant to make space for others to take advantage.
If you were a centre back, he must be a nightmare to play against! Do you try and hold your position, or do you follow him all over the pitch while leaving a gaping hole behind you?
He contributes much more than just goals ..he’s a real team player.
Crisis?what crisis?
I wouldn’t say that Kyogos form loss is not a new thing.
His form for the last 18 months has been poor and his chance conversion is not good.
I would say that if it doesn’t improve significantly by the end of the season, he needs replaced .
As a centre forward is there to score goals after all.
He’ll be amongst the goals in Scotland soon enough.
Maeda, Kühn n Calmac are picking up the slack just now. Even AJ ( a right back without pens) is among the league’s top scorers.
It is in the CL we need to see him scoring …against teams with similar coefficients to the Huns(Brugge and Zagreb) 😀
JUSTSAYIN
I mentioned last week about Zagreb and Bruges, that they certainly don’t fall into the gimme category. Yes,they are on paper much more straightforward than the likes of Villa and Atalanta,Dortmund and Leipzig but they are still very good sides.
Croatia and Belgium have both had formidable national sides for some time now,and while few of their stars ply their trade domestically, most of them make their name at home. That’s my main worry about facing them, that we are gonna come up against the next Modric or De Bruyne!
And I’ve still not forgotten the difference an aging Modric made to his Real Madrid side when he came on as a sub against us only two years ago…

A man for whom the word legend could have been invented.
Apparently MSM reporting that a redevelopment of the 100 year old main stand would cost Celtic in the region of £80 mill. Obviously only press conjecture at the moment as i can’t see the board splashing that much cash also not too much in the way of explaining where the 8k ST holders would be seated during any redevelopment and how others problems that such a major redevelopment invariably create would be mitigated against. Would it be a total rebuild or would they look to adding to / modify the existing structure to both modernise and increase capacity🤔
BAD
Agree on Kyogo.
His game intelligence and movement is superb.
His chances to goal ratio could be better but how much would an upgrade in that position cost?
After all we paid around £10 million for Idah who has struggled to date!

Good afternoon all,
Chalmersbhoy,
I’ve seen that video and it’s top drawer 👍
Hope your well.💚
Frodshambhoy,
Interesting article about renovating Main Stand.
My only concern, because I sit Main Stand Upper, as you know, where would I get relocated to during renovations.
Would it be, The Springfield, The Real McCoy ( Tavern to those of a certain vintage) or The 1888 Bar ( Turnstiles or Sidelines)
I suppose if they paid the Bar bill at any of above establishments, well maybe, just maybe, I might be in agreement 😁😁😁😁😁.
Hope you and Mrs Frodo are well 💚
Wee question,
What about this Lennon Miller story ???
Who, would take him and loan him back to Murderwell for rest of Season ?
Who would take him in January and assume Hatate or a n other might leave and get him blended into squad for next year ?
Who would say, You’re avin a laugh, ” He wouldn’t get anywhere near our midfield now, or even next Season ‘
For over 5 million, it does seem excessive to me,,, but………
I ain’t Brendan Rodgers 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Thoughts ????
FIFA has been testing a change to VAR rules, which would allow managers a certain number of challenges per game. The system was tested in some U17 tournaments recently, and is now expected to move to the next stage – trials in some senior tournaments
guess that means Scotland will have to fork out for more crayons, or god forbid, a straight ruler
Frodshambhoy
re redevelopment of the main stand. Seems as if the MSM may have plagiarised JF’s blog article? I still believe £80 Mill may be too steep a price for the current board, still far too many questions remain about reseating ST holders and for how long along with other issues the impact any redevelopment would have.
I think the biggest questions being could the outlay be recouped in a reasonable time period? Will the current demand for ST remain high for the foreseeable future? Would such a huge financial investment mean Celtic PLC would have to all but guarantee the survival of Sevco in case attendances dropped significantly if Rangers in any guise were to cease to exist? Will UEFA change the CL format again to ensure the big boys regain a monopoly on the financial rewards? Apparently the ‘bigger’ clubs aren’t overly impressed with the new set up.
🤔🤔🤔😕

re Lennon Miller. SMSM stating Motherwell would sell him for £4 mill😮 I think that B/S is just to keep the zombies happy as they’ll believe they could really afford to sign him – just about. But earlier reports were stating Motherwell would be looking for a significantly more lucrative deal before they’d consider selling him. Any deal would need to be somewhere in the region of a £6+ mill with a significant percentage of the cash up front package plus a big % sell on clause. Think there is only 1 club in Scotland that could afford that kind of deal.
Taylor Swift is in town tonight for the first of six shows. Hotel rooms that were going for $200 per night recently and now going for $2000!
In VAncouver, an AirBNB that sleeps six and was going for $800 recently is now going for over $10K when TS is in town!
Kyogo’s problem at the moment is overthinking.
He’s definitely getting enough chances, just seems to be hesitant to take the chances when presented with them, always the extra, unnecessary touch squandering so many opportunities.
Other than this he’s been playing fairly well.
Needs to be more instinctive with the finishing.
Still a menace to opposition defences.

AFTERNOON ALL AND JIM AND MAGUA chalmersbhoy just watched that video superb, thanks for posting it👍 well thought id got masel a bargain this morning went to frodsham market they were selling replica celtic shirts for a fiver, thought all my Christmases had come at once, thought the box looked a bit worse for wear, but for a fiver im not complaining, opened the box when I got back home it said inside copland and rye department store glasgow 1946, FFS it had evans on the back of the shirt, wont be back to frodsham market for a while,,another true story👍👍😎
16 ROADS they call them strikers now, but in the days of the lions they were centre forwards or goal poachers if you like, 3 of the best goal poachers ive ever seen were Joe McBride willie wallace and gerd muller, they were goal scoring machines, another true story👍
Afternoon all.
Chalmersbhoy
Thanks for the video link, a fantastic watch👍💚🍀

Don’t think anyone could argue with that statement bp.
Very difficult to find a poacher type cf nowadays, for some reason.
Gary Hooper was the last one we had that I can remember.
Perhaps the modern games demads more from a cf than simply putting the ball in the net?
I don’t know, but I don’t see why this should be.
Scoring goals should be enough.

I agree, very difficult opponents- both bounced back from heavy opening defeats to Dortmund and Bayern to be on 6/7 points.
My tongue in cheek comment was Kyogo’s stellar scoring v the Huns should be readily replicated against “ similar” coefficient level teams!
Not an exact science!
Ranieri comes out of retirement at age 73 to coach Roma ..if you count each of the three times he has coached Roma as different, he as now coached 23 clubs in his career!
So much for my recent post about managing becoming a young man’s game!

HI MIKE as regards your post last night, there is a bed here for you pal anytime you want it, bearing in mind you will have to share it with 5 west highland terriers, frankie,,benny,,George, donny and harry,BTW george snores like a trooper, but will fix you up with a set of earplugs,👍👍👍❤

I’ll keep that in mind. I thought Mahe might be looking to move before me, but he seems to be okay where he is. Mind you, he said that BEFORE the results. He might be feeling a bit differnet now ….
Bobby
if the improvement in European performances is going to be sustained, then surely we can expect at least 1 more goal from our main striker …being greedy… I’d want +2 in remaining games.
Also.
Feel we need to see an away win from remaining games and putting neck on the block – Villa is as likely as Zagreb.
Genuinely see BR having a plan to shock another EPL team.
To your main point. The wee man scores in either of those two games, panic over.
if , however, he can’t score in any of the 4 remaining games, it’s probably time to change up top.
Ergo. A left back and a main striker …before qualifiers!
Maybe Idah is one of those big lads who needs a run of games to get up to speed?
I’ll pass judgement when he plays 5-6 games in a row.
I saw enough to know there is definitely potential there.
Maybe just a little tentative around goal just now.
GG was a little more mature but he’s the type of player I can see Adam becoming ..If he wants it bad enough.
I fancy Brendan to turn him into a powerhouse 👍
I like him.
Whilst Kyogo may have slipped slightly from his previous high standards the biggest issue is still his teammates inability to see all those stellar runs he makes. Strangely the only one that seems to look for them and play for them is Anthony Ralston.
Evening all catching up after a long day out.
Definitely not a true story from bigpacky about Frodsham market.
He’s never spent a fiver on anything.
Nostalgia,
This is brilliant 💚

Great article. I just loved the way big Ange treated the press. Jackson et al deserved everything they had to take from the man.

You are bang on the money re Kyogo. His running off the ball is reminiscent of that fabulous Celt, Bobby Lennox.

If you’re gonna be gallivanting round the boozers at the club’s expense, in the name of the wee man, don’t take BRRB with you. Not even Scotland’s richest club, could afford a bar bill of that magnitude. 😁

What a fantastic documentary. Yet another belter from Paul Larkin. 🍀☘️
Hail Hail.
Anthony Stokes’ recent 15 month jail sentence arising from his drink driving, cocaine possession charge has been overturned on appeal. While the conviction will stay on his record, he will not have to serve any jail time, as long as he behaves.
Like the court, I hope he uses this break to turn things around. He had tremendous natural talent. But sounds like he has had alcohol issues for some time now, and more recently drug problems. Dont know if booze was was an issue while in Scotland, but the newspaper reports I have read suggested that it might have been. Hope he manages to stay clean.
Leggy at 6.22 – a cracking wee video
Kyogo will leave Celtic as a legend.
Only his touch (which Idah would salivate for) has temporarily gone.
All strikers have barren spells and the only reason criticism is emerging is not because Kyogo is not meeting the expectations of some, but because he has set those expectations to be measured against.
Finding another CF of Kyogo’s ability who would join Celtic would task any recruiter , so be careful what you wish for.
Ipswich Town have a young lad at CF Liam Delap who would fit a Celtic Jersey with a TransferMarket value of Euro15M and rising.
I would swap Idah for him not Kyogo.
Frodshambhoy it was only 4-99 but I told him to keep the penny as I’m a generous guy😎😎❤️
Auldheid
Given that Ipswich paid more than 20 million for Delap (including add ons), and he is now playing regularly in their first team, I cant see Ipswich doing a deal for Idah, nor can I see the kid being interested.
Gets concerning when I see players, and remember their father playing … then realize their father is younger than me!
Arne Engels gets his first start for Belgium this evening! 🇧🇪
Switched on the Athens game hoping to see Greece do over Englandshire.
6 minutes in, after the Sassenachs completely dominate the ball, they slice through Greece like a knife through butter, and Villa’s Watkins scores with ease.
