Fun City

Morning,all.

Following on from our discussion of how we have fared under our two managers since the covid season of 2020/21,it is only right that we switch our attention across the city to make comparisons there. R2ngers were quite rightly on a high after halting our long consecutive run of titles at that time, boosted by Chairman King’s hubristic boasting about how the sky was the limit for them and how Celtic were collapsing like a house of cards just as he had predicted. Little did he know that the collapse would be much closer to home…

The problems for that new club set in when Gerrard realised that there was little money left in the kitty for much needed new signings to bolster their title-winning squad, and only increased when he realised that Ange was The Real Deal, well capable of providing a genuine title challenge despite his poor start to the campaign. While he had long harboured his pipedream of managing Liverpool, he was sensible enough to recognise that the job was unlikely to fall into his lap based solely on one season of success in Scotland. He actively pursued a move away from Glasgow, and when the offer to take over at Villa arrived, he was heading south faster than you could say Holte End.

Sadly for him, heading south was also the direction that his career in management would follow, lasting only a year before being sacked in favour of Unai Emery. R2ngers weren’t too perturbed though; they still held a decent if shrinking lead in the title race and also had a much-needed cash boost of £3m in compensation for Gerrard and his team. And Gio Van Bronkhurst, a former player, had recently become available for free.

GVB had some success at his former club Feyenoord, and that was enough to persuade the hordes that he was the very man for them. And while he took them to the final of the Europa League that season, his squad wasn’t strong enough to hold off Ange’s dominant Celtic as they surged to the title. Which put his jacket on that shoogly peg. Sure enough, despite some spending in the summer to bolster an aging squad, the groundswell of opinion against the manager overwhelmed the supine board who invited Slippy’s former right hand man up to look the place over and throw Gio under the bus.

Van Bronkhurst lasted a year, but is still being paid by the club due to the terms of the contract he signed when he joined. Remember that! Michael Beale strode imperiously into the hotseat, and was welcomed by the fans in the stands and in the SMSM as The Second Coming, the man who would soon put our mouthy Aussie back in his box. Strictly speaking, I suppose it could be argued that the bold Mickey did see Ange off; after all,the Celtic manager left the club the following summer. But not before signing a lucrative four year deal to join Spurs, one of the so-called Big Six of English football. And winning a treble, the club’s eighth, prior to his departure! Mickey could only look on jealously, knowing that the failure to return his club to the top of the domestic game was gonna cost him dear.

His desire to do just that, and the need of the fans and the board to reimpose themselves above their hated upstart rivals, saw them take a risk unprecedented in their short history, and probably matched only by the sheer stupidity of Murray twenty-odd years earlier. They pushed the boat out with money that they did not have and could never hope to generate, outspending us in the summer window and pushing their wage bill way beyond our own. But scattergun signings, even those costing around £5m, do not build a team. That takes forward planning and incisive scouting and analysis. What does this player offer, where will he fit into our system? These are important questions in the modern game which were ignored by the Ibrox manager and hierarchy in their clamour to be seen to “dae sumfin!” Another equally important question that was ignored was a simpler one-do we even have a system?

It soon became apparent that while Beale did not have a system, the club had a tried and trusted one. And one which they were prepared to use again. Wait until an international break, fire the incumbent and get in another guy. Beale accepted his pay-off in accordance with his contract, and headed south to Sunderland, where he lasted longer than the twelve days of Christmas-but not by much! He too is still being paid from the diminishing coffers at Ibrox.

In strolled possibly the most arrogant manager Ibrox has ever seen, outdoing even Souness. Philip Clement had some limited success in his native Belgium, but bombed disastrously when he moved to Monaco. The R2ngers board were only interested in the success part of his CV, and certainly didn’t follow through on the reasons for failure at Monaco. That should be a warning to them for future reference, that there may be valid reasons why someone doesn’t succeed elsewhere, but some of them may actually be his fault after all. And those reasons for failure might just possibly be following him around, ingrained to his nature and to his management style.

Not that you would know any of this during Fleep’s first six months. Not at all, no digging was being done by the SMSM or fan media over Ibrox way. Everything was going just swimmingly, they even managed to climb above Celtic in the table and herald much rejoicing over an imminent treble. Sadly for all concerned, the only thing that was imminent was the collapse of such lofty dreams, and how we laughed as we celebrated our own double.

Various legal problems were also dogging R2ngers, with large payouts and fees screwed out of them by Mike Ashley and Ideal Sports siphoning the last dregs of cash down the back of the settee. And with a new austerity being resisted by the fans, the club soon lost their CEO and their chairman, leaving them rudderless in difficult times. Times that were becoming increasingly difficult for them on the field too, as they failed to qualify for the megabucks Champions League and fell a whopping nine points behind both Aberdeen and Celtic in the title race. And so we find ourselves in another international window with another beleaguered R2ngers manager-but one who hasn’t been fired! What’s changed? What’s new?

Well, the club don’t have a chairman or a CEO to fire him,not even a Director of Football. Plus they are already still paying two former managers on top of the current one,and times is tight. Especially after declaring a whopping £17m loss for the year to 30 June and having a few other issues to concern them. Such as the outstanding debt for hiring Hampden, and the cost of buying new superstar Connor Barron. Plus there is a new reality there, that not only is money not available anymore, but neither are suitable replacements should they indeed fire Clement. And that any new manager is likely to look at the current playing squad and demand an upgrade ASAP. Which simply cannot be done.

There is one man who might be stupid enough to accept the job, and if I’m honest this is a major part of this article. Derek McInnes. His is an unacceptable brand of football to these eyes, but I suppose it might bring back warm memories of Sir Walter of Cardigan for some. Kilmarnock are unlikely to be difficult to deal with should the decision be made. And while some in the SMSM are reining in the criticism of Clement after some pressure from the Ibrox board, one man has come out all guns blazing in his support. Step forward,Keith Jackson.

It is widely known that Deek interviewed for the job in 2017 while King was chairman, and that King revealed afterwards that he had turned the offer down. That is usually enough not to be asked twice-but Jacko went public with another explanation. That McInnes had actually turned King down because he couldn’t trust the R2ngers chairman! So that makes it alright then, because he had never actually turned down the club in their hour of need! All bets were still running, but that wasn’t enough for the bold Keith. He went further, explaining that McInnes had actually picked the team for the upcoming game against Ross County, all this while still working as Aberdeen manager!!!

Now,this would be damning in most other jurisdictions, and it remains to be seen if the SFA will launch an investigation into this. But we should be careful about launching a witch-hunt based on hearsay, particularly as it comes from someone who still denies that R1ngers went bust, and who revealed to the world that Craig Whyte was a Motherwell-born billionaire! But with how things work at Ibrox, and McInnes’ well known love of the club, it has a ring of truth. I suspect that the outcome will be that Clement and McInnes remain where they are-though Killie may be reviewing their own options-and that clubs considering McInnes in future will think long and hard about it.

Meanwhile,The Good Ship Celtica floats serenely forward with plans being mooted for an overdue upgrade to our main stand. More on that next week, meanwhile let’s all enjoy the fun on the other side of the city. We need something to keep us happy during these international breaks.

In addition to the nominated treble (see above) there is also a weekly 6-team acca. Each of us is looking for a nailed on certainty, but there’s no such thing! But we only make one selection each, and all we ask is…

If yer daft enough to follow our advice, put a quid on each for the nominated charity as well!
The current drive has boosted the coffers by over £800 to date,so we are hoping to build on that.

Go on,folks. A quid? What are you waiting for?

That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of

Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.

Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.

The only refurb IMO will be to create more corporate areas inside and possibly outside the existing stadium, less outlay, more income.Possibly a Fat Cats Club built within the stadium footprint.

I can actually see a Fat Cats Lounge built where the hotel was proposed to be,which is roughly where the Ticket Office currently stands.

There’s little doubt that the facilities inside the main stand need upgrading. Not only is there no hot water in the toilets, but there are very few ladies toilets available at all. Food kiosks are even worse than elsewhere, and even access and exits are poor. But like you,I think the board will probably take a step back from a total rebuild.

I’ve got roughly a week to do more research on this, subjects like the foundations being strong enough, etc. After all,the old board had to sue the contractors for additional costs incurred from underpinning the last upgrade-and it was relatively minor.

BMCUW- I’ve been calling for a refurb of main stand for a few years,if there was no hot water in Barlinnie ,they would be up on the roof again, and Amer Anwar would be outside holding a press conference. The chance to invest in the stadium was a couple of years ago, when interest rates were zero %, I think we are at optimum capacity to be honest, and the money quoted to add more seats is big,and would only increase in costs.Nothing to stop us building facilities in the footprint, cafes, indoor facilities, to be used pre and post match.

Thanks for that great breakfast read Bobby!

I can happily report that my hun neighbours are now reduced to waiting for the cover of darkness to take their bins out on a Saturday night.

The staunchness levels have all but evaporated since the heady days of “Stoaping the Ten”. The penny seems to have dropped that THAT was as good as it was going to get.

They now seem to have resigned themselves to the fact that they need to bin yet another manager and are now actively discussing whether it should be a ” steady the ship” McInnes or a slightly more “attack minded” Stuart Kettlewell. They appear to have accepted that it’s now no longer about winning trophies but about putting up a slightly better challenge.

Of course, wired as they are, I imagine a win in the LCF next month – even a flukey one – will have them going for a treble again!
😉

Of course, this all has serious repercussions for us too. If they hadn’t won the Covid Cup we’d be going for 14 in a row and with no end in sight. As it stands we must be hotter favourites to do The Ten than we were last time around. It’s for that reason that I don’t see the Board expanding the stadium at this time. The immediate future is looking quite unpredictable!

As Bada said the other day re McInnes, isn’t there questions to be asked and answered here?

I’d like to know what both Aberdeen and Kilmarnock know or think about this ..or have we become so used to the strange workings in Scotland, that this story has barely made a ripple? And is there even any point asking what the football authorities think, or intend doing?

It is probably a good time to mention DeeK (😕) and Sevco, cause I’ve got a feeling he’ll be scaling the marble staircase soon enough. The big Belgian waffler is a dead man walking and in DM they have a ready-made replacement on their doorstop. An ex-player who they could probably JUST afford, they would see Derek as a safe pair of hands right now.

Also worth mentioning they are still paying most of the managers they’ve had in their short history! Adding big Fleep to the list of managers they need to pay-off-Keep paying, won’t be in any way unusual for a club who do business the way they do.

I actually believe Sevco thought that all they had to do was have a higher wage bill than us and hey presto, success would naturally follow.

Btw Bobby, our Mitch will be raging that you’re talking about the main stand in his absence, that was the mad one’s favourite subject! 😊

7 years ago I had a season ticket for the front stand area in the South stand.
At that time there were no accessible toilets in either the main stand or front section.
I was told that I had to go into the Lisbon Lions stand to use an accessible toilet.
Which is a disgrace. I am not aware if this has changed in the last 7 years.

BMCUWP,

Profitable player trading, or rather lack of it, has been the achilles heel of the Ibrox outfit for years now. Their support don’t tolerate it .

They get offered very good money for peak Morelos but the rabid blue hordes say we need him to beat the Celtic. Morelos stays, declines, leaves for zilch.

Good offers have, no doubt, come in for peak Tavpen. But they need Tavpen’s assists and pens to beat the Celtic. Tavpen stays, declines, and becomes something of a joke figure on both sides of the divide.

Repeat the above for numerous others who could have been sold at considerable profit. But in their eyes that weakens the team and a weakened team will never beat the Celtic.

Having a group of blue suits aligning with their support in player trading mentality has certainly assisted Celtic. We did not demand that our board keep O’Riley because we need him to beat the R2ngers. Celtic fans know the rules that the club plays by, and in the main, we accept it.

From the outside looking in, it now appears that the annual Autumn sacking of the Ibrox manager has been put on hold. Most probably for financial reasons. Make do and mend, hope that the points gap doesn’t extend to double figures, maybe win the League Cup against the odds. That’s the current life in the day of a bluenose. Not having a CEO and Director of Football means that no cash is heading out the business to pay for those roles. Perhaps that is the inconvenient truth of their current situation. Huns do not appreciate inconvenient truths as it means they are further away than ever from beating the Celtic.

I also read Keith Jackson’s bit about McInnes, King, and Gilligan. There is a classic VIZ story line in there somewhere. Maybe Paddy Power could work some of their magic on it.

The Main Stand.

If not now then when Celtic ? The demand is there and the need is there. £150m to do it properly, from the ground up. As Dermot Desmond has the final say on all the big decisions, why does he continue to say not on his watch. Fergus managed three sides on his brief watch, surely DD could manage one on his.

I binge watched ‘Say nothing’ last night. All 9 episodes. Not having read the book i can’t draw comparisons between the written and the celluloid versions. However i thoroughly enjoyed the series. The early episodes transporting me back to my childhood in the mad bad days of Belfast and the North of Ireland during the early 1970’s. Excellent cast and acting and not a dodgy ‘Norn Irish’ accent to be found. Maxinne Peak, playing an older Dolours Price is outstanding. At the end it left me feeling quite depressed ,the disillusion and sense of betrayal from the the main republican protagonists (The Price sisters and Brendan Hughes) is palpable as is the pain the McConville family suffered with the abduction, killing and search for their mothers remains and justice.

Well worth a watch

Good afternoon, friends.
For a few years now I’ve read various mentions of the lack of hot water in the Main Stand. I’m sorry to debunk the urban myth. I was lucky enough to get a relocation at the start of 2023-24 and have a fantastic seat in WS2. That’s the back half of the main stand, behind and slightly left of Brendan’s dug out. Whether I have my ablutions pre match or at half time, not only am I able to empty my bladder (admittedly in a rather small, crowded toilet area) but I can follow that with soapy hot water to wash my hands. Those toilets also serve WS1. Maybe it’s just the east end of the stand ( and the front sections?) that dont have hot water.
I’d love to see a refurbishment that increases the capacity of the main stand. But as others have said, where do the current 8,000-odd season book holders go if any work is taking place? Does anyone know the number of actual season tickets sold? If it was, say, 54,000 could a main stand project be spread over 2 seasons, relocating half of us one year and half the next?

I saw this and thought of you……..😂

An American wine connoisseur made the mistake of reviewing buckfast… Here’s their tasting notes:

Buckfast Tonic Wine (No Vintage)

Screw cap, took it off about 30 minutes before to bring in some air. Apparently made by monks in England. Decided to try while cooking dinner. Poured into a glass, first glance has a very inky almost brownish color that you see in older wines. Very syrupy, liquid clings to the side of the glass when swirled. Almost 15% ABV.

Stuck my nose in and was hit with something I’ve never experienced before. Barnyardy funk (in a bad way) almost like a dead animal in a bird’s nest. A mix of flat Coca Cola and caramel with a whiff of gun metal.

On the palate, overwhelming sweetness and sugar. Cherry Cola mixed with Benadryl. Unlike anything I’ve tasted. I’m not sure what this liquid is but it is not wine, I’m actually not sure what it is but it tastes like something a doctor would prescribe. A chemical concoction of the highest degree. Can only compare it to a Four Loko.

Managed to make it through a couple small glasses but not much more. Has absolutely ruined the evening drinking-wise for me as I tried to drink a nice Bordeaux after but the iron-like metallic sweet aftertaste I just couldn’t get out of my mouth even after a few glasses of water. I don’t drink a lot of coffee regularly so I also have mild heart palpitations from the caffeine after just drinking a bit of this and feel a slight migraine.

An ungodly concoction made by seemingly godly men. I believe the Vatican needs to send an exorcist over to Buckfast Abbey as the devil’s works are cleary present there. After tasting this “wine,” the way I feel can only be described as akin to being under a bridge on one’s knees orally pleasing a vagrant while simultaneously drinking liquified meth through a dirty rag.

I’ve drank a lot of wines in my life and will never forget this one.

Hi Frodshambhoy:
Hope you are doing well, in the pink, and enjoying life.😊
I don’t know the answer to your question, but did hear a theory on it from an old Rangers friend of mine, who is no fan of their manager. He said the contract extension occurred after Baldemort had hinted (or complained) publicly that he had been fed misleading information prior to signing the original. Quelle surprise, eh? Sensing that the remnants of the Bigotdome Board were in a vulnerable position, he, or his agent, renegotiated his contract.

No idea if that is true or not, but it does sound plausible.

“SFA panel were of the opinion that VAR should have intervened to send the Japanese star off.
Their report read: “The panel discussed this decision at length with the majority (3:2) deeming the onfield decision incorrect. ”

I would suggest (3:2)that it makes the decision very subjective and ambiguous therefore the decision to leave the on field call a good one.

I posted a wee snap of The Celtic Way on Wednesday Night (I think). It wasn’t very good both because of the composition and the intrusive presence of irrelevant activity… so last evening I went back to try and improve on it…… I think the colour balance now and the picture itself is much more effective and engaging…but ultimately that comes down to ‘opinion’….in fact there’s still one thing to be done…..anyway…here we are…for the moment

Re Hot Watergate… My brother sits at the other end of the Main Stand Upper and he doesn’t have hot water. 🤔

I sit in the North Stand Upper (405) and there’s no hot water there. There IS downstairs if you’re in the posh area.
