A Blast From The Past – Part 4

He could have made a name for himself.
He had something, skill that all of us would love to have.
He was Scandinavian so the weather shouldnt deter.
Age was on his side, he had joined a massive club that liked skillful players, the world was his lobster,,,but as happens all too often upon these trips down memory lane, it didn’t work out that way.

For starters he joined in January viewed as a back-up to the then star striker and new managers marque signing, and he really was a back-up earning a meager 4 starts in the next 6 months despite netting the winner in only his second appearance off the bench. Starting solo or as one half of a partnership next season through good substitute performances looked a goer.
And it was,,,until the manager who signed him got sacked and the new one had different ideas.

The problem however, was that he actually was a good player, he simply wasn’t given a proper chance in The Hoops.
We honestly don’t know if he was worthy. And now we never will.

Our bhoy was skillful, technical, yet slighter than the average player from that region,,he almost reminds me of Kuhn, and perhaps he would have suited the right-hand role well ala Simon Donnelly who also came in as a striker initially. But he had a knack, something money cannot buy, that knack getting on the end of something, being in the thick of things, actually sticking the ball in the back of the net hence his 12 in 15 prior to January which persuaded the biscuit tin to be pried open.

Have you guessed who it is yet?

I recall him having enough knowhow to use movement to create space, trapping a long ball perfectly, he possessed game intelligence alongside proper dig, the will to win. Everytime I watched him I said to myself ‘he’ll do!’. But I can count the number of times I watched him on my hands, literally.

In fairness the new manager brought in a new couple who truly did form a good striking partnership, so it’s not as if his omission ever cost the team, that’s probably the reason why he’s almost forgotten, but it’s sad to see a good player overlooked, it’s never pleasant to witness a dream move go awry ala Shane Duffy.

One common thread running through nearly all the protagonists of this series is the simple fact they weren’t joining a good side, unable to find their feet in a settled playing system nor thrust in as the rookie but with ten other decent players to carry them through. Most saw major chop and change at Celtic, and I’ve gotta view that as a big reason most if not all failed to truly settle and earn accolades aside from being just memories on a blog now. I also cannot view his capture as simply ‘kissing a frog hoping for a prince to emerge’ for with his stats he was always going to earn a move and given our penchant for Scandinavian players (justified in my book) moving to Celtic looked like natural progression and a good choice for the lad.
His 6 months playing for the Hoops (and entire career) isn’t even enough for a full Wikipedia page, it’s so scant they may as well not have bothered.

But the history books don’t lie and from January 2010 until that years August, Morton Rasmussen was a Celtic striker.
We hardly knew ye, but you lived the dream, and should this reach you Morton, plenty of us felt you were a player.
You’ll Never Walk Alone.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.
⭐️👏☘️👍🍾
That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.
Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

This drive has already raised well over £1000,so join in. The more, the merrier.
Default payment method seems to be ApplePay,which won’t suit everyone. There is an option on the page to change that to your preferred means.

International breaks are always quiet on here. Even Scotoand finally winning didn’t generate too much traffic. Hopefully Bobby and Mahe realise that it’s perfectly ok to withdraw from obligatory daily articles and we can all keep chatting Mong ourselves until the weekend approaches.
I did however spend a wèe bit of time working out the various permutations that would see Scotland qualifying in 2nd place and so reaching our first ever quarter finals. It’s unlikely but far from impossible..
Out to my granddaughters panto this afternoon but maybe later this evening I’ll don my anorak and let rip!
Have a most pleasant Saturday…

Something for the grey matter while it’s quiet 👍

1) Which Scottish football trophy was won by English sides Man U, Chelsea and Leeds?

2) Who was the manager of Real Madrid when they lost to Aberdeen in the cup winners cup final of 1983?

3) How many times did Charlie Nicholas win the league title in Scotland?

4) Which club side was Moses McNeil a founding member of?

5) 3 men have managed the Scottish national team more than once ..name them.

Brugge seem to be having a bit of internal strife at this minute.

Manager having a go at the team in public (Good) players airing their grievances over things like playing time (Excellent) and now the chairman apparently storming into the dressing room to have a go at the lot of them! (Fantastic),

Hard not to get a little cheered by that.

The more I see of Ben Doak, the more I wonder why we did not push out the boat and make every effort to keep him, even if we had to tweak the salary structure.
Barring injury, he is going to be immense.

I posted similar on here when he left.
As I recall the replies said it wasn’t money as Liverpool were restricted by FA rules regarding youngsters. Doak apparently said he preferred the set up, coaching and facilities at Liverpool so we couldn’t convince him to stay.

I’m pretty surely I haven’t just made that up so I think it really is a true story.

To rub it in my Hearts supporter mate here in Tenerife was raving about Doak this morning yet didn’t realise the Celtic connection.

I have been wondering why we weren’t hosting Euro final type games at CP.

I knew i had read something about parking being an important factor in determining whether a place could host such a game.

Auldheid,
I have been busy all day but got the chance just now to read the Celtic by numbers article on Kyogo. I also listened to the huddle breakdown with the very same Allan Morrison amd Juco James yesterday. For me, it confirms what I and others like St Tams have been saying. He’s adapting to a new system and finding this difficult. He’s not scoring as many goals as he did previously and seems to be missing good chances which was not like him. Now, as Allan Morrison points out, that is a lot to do with us remembering previous seasons where unnoticed by us he benefited from a lot of poor goalkeeping. I am glad the underlying metrics say he is due to start scoring regularly again soon. Combine that with improvements Allan Morrison points out in the other parts of his game and he’ll be flying.

Answers to earlier questions

1) Glasgow merchants charity cup.
In what must be one of the oldest trophies in world, the charity cup saw Glasgow select sides take on the invited champions of England. Started back when Scottish football was just getting going.

2) Di Stefano was manager of Real Madrid when they met Aberdeen in the Euro final in 83.

3) Charlie Nicholas won both his league winners medals at Celtic, first time round.

4) Yavol herr general! Moses McNeil was one of the original bunch of boat enthusiasts from fleshers haugh, who had the bright idea to start a football team ..maybe the rowing alone wasn’t getting them fit enough.

5) 3 men have dared to manage Scotland twice
Stein, Alex McLeish and Andy Beattie 👍

Auldheid,
Kyogo has scored 18 league goals in the last 18 months.
For a Celtic striker that is a poor return considering the amount of chances that he has.
How anyone can predict that his goalscoring will return, I don’t get.
As I’ve said before, he gets a pass from the fans , due to his record against the huns.
