What hangover?
The old traditional timeslot saw quite a few empty seats strangely, the lineup saw several replacements drafted in, the ref blows the whistle and we are off.
The subsequent 45 minutes plus delivered the best first half I have witnessed from Celtic. Ever!.
Forget the opposition, we would have given Barca a proper game playing like that. Our passing was slick and precise picking out superb run after run, our set-piece delivery was consistently dangerous, plus we had our scoring boots on. Spare a thought for their goalkeeper, plucked the ball out of the net 5 times and went off injured,,all in one single half of football.
It was a masterclass 45, almost a party atmosphere with every Hoop looking to get in upon the act, especially AJ who was the auxiliary striker at times. As I watched it all unfurl I thought we are truly witnessing the end of last years midfield,,Callum, Matt, Reo,,of course Matt’s gone, Callum will stay around and retire a Celtic legend, and I dare say Reo is not an automatic starter anymore after Bernardo and MacCowan both dazzled and offered much more than the Japanese midfielder.
Based on that game alone, the starting midfield trio looked much more balanced, and it would be a bad decision to tear it up after all three justified their inclusion not just through endeavor but with a goal apiece. Choosing the pick of the bunch is very hard, but I’m opting for Bernardo’s simply due to the fact he cleverly finished off a fine passage of attacking play rather than crafting something for himself ala Callum and Luke.
To top off the complete display, both the defense and attack also scored on the day, mark of a good team. Throw in a clean sheet and it was the dream day at the office.
Some points though,,has anyone else noticed Yang getting more gametime than Palma, who was considered the better of the two for a long stretch. I like Yang and kept my eye on him, he did nothing, nothing risky that is. Simple pass, tick. Good movement, tick. At that stage being 5 zip ahead it would have been easy for a substitute to ‘go for glory’ but he did no such thing. The second half instructions were clearly ‘take it easy, no need for heroics’ and call me naive but I like a player who,,,
1,,bids his time without complaint (tick)
2,,works hard behind the scenes to make the breakthrough (I’ve gotta assume that’s a tick)
3,,follows instructions (tick)
4,,puts the team first (tick).
The lad may be sticking around awhile longer, fine by me.
It’s also notable that Barcas hand was forced in regards to Valle. His loan spell could have fallen to pieces, there’s no point in warming a bench when he could be progressing on the pitch, so the Catalans had a choice to make and clearly Celtic would want the answer earlier rather than later. They acquiesced and he’s here until seasons end now, once that’s known he gets the nod to start ala Saturday. I might be reading too much into this but I can see him being first choice for the remainder of this campaign then targeted for a permanent transfer in the summer. His future looks more secure and exciting in Glasgow rather than a longshot at being at bit-part player at home. Let’s play, let him fall in love, let him dictate the move, and our old buddies should be easy enough to deal with.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #21 CELTIC 5 ROSS COUNTY 0 (SCALES, McCOWAN, BERNARDO, McGREGOR, IDAH)*
Good evening, friends.
Another emphatic win from The Champions as we continue on our quest for a second domestic invincible season! Too early?
Brendan made changes to the starting 11 as expected. But when half a dozen different starts appear, they need to make an impact. 4 of them scoring in the first half relieved any worries!
Scales was first to impress, bulleting a header home in the 10th minute and playing a beautiful weighted assist through for Luke to double our lead on 27. Bernardo’s persistence paid off with our 3rd goal and a minute later McGregor hit a screamer to make it 4. CalMac’s ‘goal of the match’ lasted all of 4 minutes when twinkle toes Idah escaped some close attention on the edge of the box before curling a cracker into the corner of the net.
5 nil at half time had us all debating what the final score might be. But we’ve seen this story before and a guy next to my son in the standing section stuck a tenner on us to finish the game as 5-0 winners, at odds of 9/1!
The second half turned out to be a very professional performance and although we hit the woodwork 4 times we failed to add to our half time lead ran out 5-0 winners.
We have now played 21 games this season, winning 17, drawing 3 and losing 1. We have scored 64 – now averaging more than 3 per game! – and conceded 17 (domestically it’s 54-7 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thank you sincerely to the 74 who voted this time around.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Schmeichel: 0
Johnston: 1
Carter-Vickers: 1
Scales*: 50
Valle: 5
McGregor: 17
Bernardo: 54
McCowan*: 69
Forrest*: 10
Idah: 12
Maeda: 1
Yang: 1
Engels: 0
Ralston: 0
Hatate: 0
Taylor: 0
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Ross County are –
McCowan – 5 points
Bernardo – 4 points
Scales – 3 points
McGregor – 2 points
Idah – 1 point
And the overall positions after 21 games played are –
41 points – Kuhn
31 points – Hatate and Scales
29 points – Maeda
27 points – McGregor
26 Points – Bernatdo
18 points – Engels and Trusty
17 points – Johnston A and Schmeichel
14 points – McCowan and Valle
8 points – Kyogo
7 points – Carter-Vickers and O’Riley
5 points – Idah and Taylor
3 points – Forrest
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley, Welsh
Next up it’s a top of the table clash in the Premiership as Celtic travel to Aberdeen on Wednesday evening, kick off 8.00pm.
Hail Hail!
Good Morning Sentinels – Great Game On Saturday, five goals in a game with several changes at the start.
Everyone came in and did a great job, Luke McCowan bleeds green & white.
Thought Yang, although a sub, gave a very good account of himself – technique, physicality, tactics, all hugely improved.
Auldheid @ November 29 @10:00 pm,
With all due respect, my original point was that when critiquing the correspondence between Peter Lawwell and Stewart Regan re: the “reopening” of the LNS Commission you gave a partial view.
Putting forward Peter Lawwell’s side but circumventing Stewart Regan’s responses.
For me your outlook has changed over the years and is now boardering on revisionism.
The partial “forgiveness”, that condones Peter Lawwell and Neil Doncaster’s part in this, yet condemns Stewart Regan who gets no remission.
Still!! Enough Already… Eh!?
If fholk are really that interested the letter exchange between Peter Lawwell and Stewart Regan is here…

The circumstances around the SFA LNS Inquiry’s report is here…

Chaibhoy
Give it up please.
How do you know I was intending to be impartial?
It’s in your head, you were looking for it for some reason only to you.
Look at what BP said. Was that impartial?
Was putting forward to BP a document that challenged his views impartial or providing balance in a partial way.?
The explanation I gave is the simple one.
I knew where the PL letter was so attached it.
BP said nothing about Regan and I had to search for the chain to satisfy your thinking.
That turned out to reinforce it such is confirmation bias.
BP is not one for delving into business issues so there was no need to provide the chain, I doubt with respect to BP he would have gone through the exchanges iro Regan.
In respect of forgiveness you make the same mistake as Chalmersbhoy in that it does not mean forgetting but seeks healing which is what I continue to do via SFSA.
I reckon I gave Regan plenty of attention over the Res12 years on blogs pointing out his flaws.
During those years new information emerged like that SR/PL chain revealing UEFA knew about Rangers ebt use and so with new facts/information I changed my view of events.
Don’t you?
Now please give it a rest as I’ve lost trust in you as you clearly have in me.
Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Scottish Cup Matchday Monday!
Good morning all
First post for several weeks. Have a Monday off from work which is something of a relief. Been a stressful few months. A sucession of minor health issues haven’t helped.
Reading things here recently I have become a bit fed up with the raking over the details of events of a decade or more ago. I will be forever convinced that Lord Nimmo-Smith’s conclusions were wrong ( and possibly decided before his report began) and remain disgusted that the media and football authorities refusal to countenance the idea that the Rangers post June 2012 was not the same entity as the one which started 2012. I did not think at the time that Celtic was well led in that era either – and no revelation since has made me alter that view. But I live with all this. It is history.
I was going to comment after the Bruges match but decided not to as it was a bit of a flat performance. I’d have taken 8 points from 15 when the draw was made but was, at the end of the match, a bit disappointed we had not got to 10.
Arne Engels has been a hottish topic amongst my Celtic supporting coterie – and elsewhere. He is not , I think, ever going to be a spectacular player in the way that O’Riley could be and in televised matches he does not show up well but he does look better if you see him ‘live’- he covers a lot of ground, plays neat passes and is unshowily tenacious. Whether he will become a better player than Bernardo or McCowan- he is not as good as either on recent evidence- I and we will just have to wait and see.
Saturday was a good performance. I was disappointed Kyogo never started- not least because Wee Luca was at the game and our number 8 is his favourite player. I think the Japanese would have thrived on the service from the orthodox/traditional right wing play of James Forrest and indeed in the second half of Yang being on the left. Idah did though play well – more pace than I thought he had and perhaps more finesse than I thought he had too.
The game on Wednesday will be unusual for us domestically- facing a team whose principal aim will be to win and not to avoid defeat or even just a hammering. I hope we win -and if we are as clinical and focussed from the first whistle as we can be we will win- but a draw would be a better result for us than them.
Tempus fugit and all that.
Jimbo
Chairbhoy.
What changed my mind is not what PL wrote to Regan but that he copied it to Infantino precisely because it might have ramifications for UEFA.
Infantinos response is not known but all through Res12 Celtic stubbornly resisted taking the overdue tax case to UEFA and I could never figure out why.
Then around 2016 I looked at the case of Giannina FC who had an overdue tax situation that saw UEFA investigate.
During that investigation UEFA found 5 private agreements with players that were in breach of FFP “fair presentation” rules.
That sounded to me and BRTH like side letters.
It is most likely that Infantino, the author of FFP , saw that in 2012 and wanted the lid kept on a 10 year breach of FFP that affected all clubs that lost to a Rangers who should not have been in the CL/EL whom they had played.
This explained to me the comment from the Company Sec about not biting the hand that feeds you.
It would explain PL trying to long grass Res12 saying UEFA not interested after appearing to be seeking justice in 2012.
As I said as facts emerge I had a better idea of why Celtic were so stubborn on Res12.
UEFA did not want to look.
Jimbo67
I hope my latest replies to Chairbhoy end the exchanges.
I do appreciate it’s history but those who do not learn from it are bound to repeat the same mistakes.
In any case I was accused of being impartial when attempting to be partial and explained my position.
I also appreciate some do not gaf about anything that is not directly football related but I think honesty and integrity is more important, as it’s lack causes the very thing you spoke of in your post.
I’m finished on the matter unless Chairbhoy keeps it going.

Talking about past events is part of being a supporter is and what makes this an interesting blog to read. Events like the Vojvodina game, losing to Feijenoord in 1970, the fall of the old board or the lack of warm water in the lavs at Celtic Park /Parkhead anything goes but …
I would not wish to diminish the significance or importance of these events and would imagine my own briefly given views on LNS, the Scottish media and football hierarchy as well as Celtic’s stance on matters suggest that I still do have strongly held views. But the off-field events from as early as autumn 2009* to maybe the arrival of Gerrard at Ibrox now seem to just be a permanent source of irritation within our support. And in the absence of any real information or a ‘smoking gun’ won’t shift opinions now.

*I have chosen this date as I recall meeting an old friend – he wrote the book The Andy Thom Experience, ran a Celtic website and stayed in the same street as me in the 1960s and 70s- who had attended a meeting hosted by Lawwell in which our then CEO advised, to his delight, that Rangers were on the point of financial collapse.
JIMBO67
Speaking of games from the past,I reckon you and a few others will remember this one. Late 74 as we went for Ten In A Row,only to blow up in the closing stages. It’s relevant to MAHE’s comment in the article about the first half being the best he can remember, for this has always been my own favourite in that respect.
Celtic 5-0 Hibs.
OK,we were only three up at half time, but an 11yo me had never seen our side so completely dominant in the first half, and Hibs were no Ross County back then. Stevie Murray probably had his best ever game for us,and he had a few of them. Dixie scored another hat trick against Hibs, whom he clearly loved playing against-and then followed it up with another against the same side in the League Cup Final the following week!
Pretty sure I’ve never seen us better in any first half.
Mahe , surprised that Idah never got a mention in your review of the game.
I thought he was excellent and was great to see him complete 90 mins.
As for Yang , although he looked lively, there is still no end product.
BMCUWP
I do remember that Hibs match and the brilliant rematch a week later when it was 6-3 to us in the League Cup final. I remember the only grumbles at that time were that the team had started the season so slowly because from that 5-0 match through to the Ne’er Day game with Clyde we were better than at any time in 2 years. Why Jinky, Dixie and George Connelly did not start at Ibrox on 4 Jan 75 remains a source of pointless, unresolved speculation ever since as is why Big Billy , Harry Hood , Brogan and TC became suddenly became clearly over the hill after that defeat.
Other games I recall we had our feat up , metaphorically, by half time after destroying good teams early were the derby of 2022 when Hatate got 2 and the Sporting game in Nov 83. My dad thought our first half v Benfica was as well as we ever played but a third goal in that half was mysteriously disallowed.
Hibs were still more than decent in Feb 1976 when we tore them apart in the first half. I remember my dad and I on the way home thinking we’d a real chance of not just regaining the league but going far in the Cup Winners’ Cup but instead, as with 75, we rather collapsed from what had looked a real position of strength.
Jimbo
JIMBO67
Special mention to a more recent game, beating R2ngers 5-0. Again, three up at HT,and five ahead with well over half an hour to go. I’m not and never have been one for humiliating teams, but we could and should have hit double figures that day.
I think we gubbed them 4-0 the week before as well!
Jimbo67, Ibrox on 4 Jan 75
Was that the game we lost 3-1.
If it was I remember being confident even when we went behind as we were better than them.
I also remember that I never rated Jim Brogan and on that day he was worse than useless.
I left struggling to work out how we lost.
Jimbo67
And in the absence of any real information or a ‘smoking gun’ won’t shift opinions now.

The Res12 Archive is full of documents that smoke but no one governing football from UEFA down or the media, who were served the smoking guns on a plate with the report from The Offshore Game that were provided with the documentation on the Archive, wanted ed to look.
Did you know UEFA never saw the 5WA?
Had they done so they would have to have to considered it in breach of article 12 of FFP designed to protect the integrity of UEFA competition, the very rule they applied to Sevco as a NEW club/company to refuse entry to UEFA competition until they had membership of SFA for 3 years.
What are chances the 5WA authors did not know this which is why UEFA were unsighted
Now had UEFA view been conveyed to SPL/ SFA it would have made the same club narrative impossible.
My point is that what Rangers did affected more than Celtic and there was no appetite in football at large to deliver a just solution to strip titles and make it clear Rangers were no longer.
Far too much money at stake.
That is the truth as I see it based on what I know .
A truth that I perhaps should stop sharing?
BMCUWP
Agree we should have taken a few more off Rangers in 2018 but they were probably nearer the class of the current Ross County team than the likes of Hibs in the 70s or Sporting Lisbon.
FRODSHAM
It was 3-0 – one down at half-time when we had been all over them we ended up being lucky to only lose by 3. Brogan was a decent half-back- though it remained a mystery in our house that he got the nod over John Clark so often when the Brush was fit. That Ibrox game he was disastrous. As was Hunter in goals.

Now if Aw Naw is looking in he will recall my unwillingness to accept his argument that PL did not want to sign Stephen Fletcher to increase Celtic chances of winning the title.
However had I kent then etc I would be fully on board with Aw Naws theory.
You have confirmed what I suspected that PL knew in 2009 of Rangers financial circumstances and how their entry into the CL was their lifeline.
I am reinforced in that view having seen a joint draft between PL and Martin Bain making a case for both clubs to enter the top league in England.
It was in March 2011 the very month before the SFA approved Rangers UEFA licence application.
It’s at
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1j7hJEsbLKJSYuoma01zXEebypqKEXyYT1cJEIuo-9xc/edit?usp=drivesdk
Participation in the CL was Rangers only hope of survival proved in 2011 when they exited to both CL and EL.
CW in an interview admitted that Administration was caused by that failure.
The unpalatable truth is that Celtic at Board level had been in cahoots with Rangers to prevent them facing the consequences of their actions.
The frustration nay anger at PL still being on The Board understandably remains still but it has not been enough for any of the groups representing supporters to make a case for his removal in spite of being put in the picture.
The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings”
Underlings who did SFA when provided with the opportunity.
Jimbo67, it was 3-0. Don’t know where I got the 1 from.
I do remember telling my mates not to panic when they went 1 up. I told them it just made a game of it as we would win easily.
As I keep saying, shows what I know.
Ally Hunter ended up running a grocery shop right next to my mum’s flat in Old Kilpatrick.
Can’t see Kasper doing something like that when he eventually stops playing.
I know this is not as easy as it looks, but take a peek at the consummate relaxed ease with which 44 year old Ronaldinho scores a free kick in a Doha game between past players of Barca and Real Madrid. Nakamura and Griffiths could do this. We should have some players ( perhaps Bernardo, Engels, Callum and Reo ) practice this constantly, until they can do it in their sleep.

We did trounce them three or four times in the first two seasons of Brendan R but by the time of that 5-0 game they were totally punctured and I think we took pity on them. I think I wanted it to go to 6 to equal the margin of 1957’s League Cup final and for us to ‘declare’ and not eclipse the legends of 51 years before. The most satisfying of these drubbings was the 5-1 Ibrox in the spring of 2017. Having endured many hidings there it was a sweet day.
AULDHEID
I never forgot what my friend told me- I think the match we met at was a Europa game with Rapid Vienna. Although it took time for them to collapse as absolutely as they did I was in no doubt it would happen.
I think that in the 09/10 and 10/11 they did play in the Champions League – and played in rhe Europa knockout in the 2nd year which probably kept the proverbial wolves from the door. I still quite respected PL at that time – I had been living in Edinburgh in early 2009 and the talk then was that Hibs would not have sold Fletcher to us whatever we’d bid so I was still prepared to give Lawwell the benefit of the doubt although even before 13 Feb 2012 I had become less and less of a fan. This’ll be my last contribution to the debate but, even if you are a bit like Scipio, keep telling the truth. One day somebody who is not an underling may care.
FRODSHAM
Ally Hunter started off really well with us but went downhill rapidly after letting a soft goal in for Scotland- ironically on the happiest night I can ever remember the national team providing me with. I did hear Brian Glover’s voice saying ‘Get in goal Kaspar!’ just before Bruges’ goal last week but otherwise he seems a mile away from most of our keepers. After his performance in the Christmas video a career as a thespian seems his for the taking.

When Celtic refused to play against Eastern European opposition
A tragedy is unfolding in Ottawa, capital city of the Great White North.
The Scottish Irish store has moved to share premises with the British Food Company. Yes, you can still get your tartan kit and accessories but the food has become completely anglicized.
Black pudding, pies(straight meat and bean and mashed potato topped), haggis, potato scones….all gone! Over a month of excuses that we are waiting on the next order. Any fool can see that they do not have the freezer room for the above items. The place is stocked with Cotswold pies, pasties, sausage rolls and other English fare.
It is like a microcosm of what has been happening to Scotland over the centuries…pushed out of our culture by the English. Now this!
I confess I took some comfort in Walnut Whips but even here, I was not free from power plays. Shrinkflation of the sacred whips…..they are about 75% of their original size! Even Batenburg cakes are not due in until mid December. The path of the immigrant is not an easy one. Even the football calendars are MU, MC, and Liverpool.
Freedom! Freedom’s sword will strongly draw!

Leggy as they are at home and it’s Falkirk are EK resting some of their regular starters.
With the upcoming CL game, I watched a bit of the Chelsea Villa game on the weekend. Villa are doing a zombie ….not doing so well domestically, but good in Europe …. bottom half of the table with 22 goals against in 13 games…. but, in spite of this, have managed 4 clean sheets out of 5 CL games!
In scotland, the argument could be made that the gap between CL and SPL is so big, it makes one almost irrelevant to the other (not sure I agree, but the argument can be made)… but cant see that applying to Villa and the EPL, where both of a higher standard ….
Unai Emery was always something of a European specialist as a coach, but this seems unusual even for him….
with Euro places via the league table, this could mean Villa are more focussed on CL results ….. even in what might be an otherwise meaningless rubber against Celtic.
Celtic have been handed a fine of more than £20,000 by UEFA for two charges in the recent Champions League win over RB Leipzig.
