A Tough Trip

Morning,all.

Last night was an occasion for even the hardiest of our travelling support to wonder if they had made a wise decision in making the journey to The Granite City. God,it was a truly awful night for a game of football, played as it was in dreadful conditions of constant lashing rain and howling gales. I congratulate each and every one of them for persevering, instead of curling up in front of the fire to watch it at home.

Many of us will have warm memories of past visits to Aberdeen, and also of long trips back down the road after getting our arses handed to us on a plate. Last night was neither, because the game did little to warm the cockles of our hearts. It might live in the memory for another typical Don Robertson display, but it will be the blackest of hearts which recalls his performance with any affection. As an example, he booked Valle for an innocuous coming together in midfield while allowing Neilsen and Shinnie carte blanche to hack and kick at will. About a dozen fouls by them, most unpunished, before either was given a card, and then told to go and do it again.

I’m not sure that they were following the instructions of the manager in doing so, but the decision was clearly made somewhere along the line, and Robertson was his usual amenable self in accommodating and encouraging them. Not that they were the only offenders, just the worst by a country mile.

The constant breakdown this caused to our rhythm was apparent in the lack of chances created throughout, and while I’ll always give credit to our players for the bravery, they lacked in guile and the necessary cutting edge. It seemed to take us forever to even get a corner, but Bernardo decided to somehow do a Charlie Tully against the wind by swinging one of our first into the far corner of the net. Naturally, the bold Don was always going to award a foul against us for this, his eagle eye catching a “block” by Maeda on their goalie. This was followed up by an even worse decision to ignore a blatant handball on the line. Dallas in VAR signalled his compliance in both decisions because he was too busy watching his heroes on another feed from Ibrox.

The goal when it came was a huge sigh of relief, and from the least likely of sources on the night. I reckon most of us had nominated Hatate as first for the hook, but it was Bernardo, probably our most effective player, who made way for McCowan. And when Taylor came on for Valle, some of us would have wondered at the wisdom of the smaller defender being preferred against these high ball merchants. All such discussion though was soon forgotten with little more than ten minutes remaining on the clock.

Taylor got the ball in a harmless-looking midfield area and swung the ball to the right hand edge of the box. Hatate had easily sprung the offside trap and swept the ball home with some conviction across and past the keeper. Hallelujah!

Not that we could relax though. Aberdeen didn’t fold, nor did we build on our lead. In fact, five minutes were left on the clock when Trusty seemed to trip over his own feet and allowed Sokler to get a clear shot away. Fortunately, CCV was on hand to get a block in to send it soaring above the bar. And that was just about it for the evening.

The players retired to the dressing rooms to get the thermals on and dry out, while the fans faced the long dark trip home. It could have been much worse though but for Reo lighting the night up with his goal. We now have a significant lead of seven points plus a game in hand against Aberdeen, and eleven over the huns. On a night like that, we can hope for silky football by all means, but digging out the three points by sheer force of will in atrocious conditions is as much a part of winning titles as any. Well done to the troops-and of course to the travelling support.

Good morning,
Just reading back.
At least one woman posts on here and who knows how many more read. Are you all happy with your schoolboy level posts about Erika Roe last night?
I’m not a prude and I’m not ‘woke’ by any means, I just don’t think there’s a place for that on this blog and I don’t think it makes the blog a better place.

Last night’s game came on the back of the sad news that Celtic FC has lost one of its own. SFTB was not only a friend of the site, but a friend to the many people he met over the years. He will be much missed by us all, but most of all by his friends and family. My condolences to all who knew and loved him, a true gentleman and a great pal.

I’m replying a bit too quickly here as I am slightly astounded of forehead at your reply.

I don’t intend to post anything more about this as I’ve said how I feel and I think SFTB’s passing and celebration of hs life is more worthy. There were many more Erika Roe related posts lasts night than those related to SFTB when I was reading back this morning and that’s what drew my attention.

Valle was struggling with conditions all first half so GT replacing was wise.
Hatate takes a lot of blame yet had two of our few shots ,one earning a good save and the other 3 points.
Bernardo was unlucky to be subbed yet once again our invisible captain escapes criticism.
Iposted last the Dons had followed other teams example and allowed CCV to have ball as he had no creative out ball.As game progressed they afforded Trusty the same as our midfield never made themselves available.
Our captain did as he often does and stayed safely alongside opponent and pointed for others to have the ball.
You could see our central defenders gesturing for midfielders to come for ball and only when McCowan and Idah appeared we had an outlet.
Once the midfield balance changed and JF came on we started to threaten the physical Dons.

Hold your lived ones close and live every minute. Life does go on, but yesterday’s sudden and unexpected news about Tony was certainly a timely reminder to me. There’s never any guarantee that any of us will be bere tomorrow!

Fan…I only caught the last half hour if the game so dint have too much to say about what went on before that.
It was obvious to me that Aberdeen were playing a tight 433 and employing a very low block to keep spaces tight and stop Celtic playing. You consistently criticise Calmac but I honestly don’t think you see that he ties up two players with the positions he takes up. It seems to me that it’s the tactic we employ to try to open up space behind the block. I understand he’s not a natural no6, and also that he couldnae tackle a fish supper, but I do think you do him a disservice by labelling him ”invisible”.
In saying that, we’re all guilty of seeing what we want to see in a player, good or bad, and that’s what we tend to look for when we watch games!

A very good point and well made.

Tbh I’ve spoken to a few this morning and the only topic of conversation was the sad passing of our friend SFTB. I think everyone is in shock. I spoke to him briefly on Friday afternoon and cannot believe he’s gone now.

Glad I got to hear his patter a good few times and one particular chat and his observations about Barabbas had us all in stitches. Then all the razor sharp assessment on matters fitba. Not many could match him there.

My thoughts are with his family and the guys that really knew him well. Can only imagine how they are feeling.

You will be missed Tony.

Callum isn’t just the best player in the country, he’s the top goal scored too.

I can’t see a single other player in the league that does what Callum does week to week.

The lad has been absolutely brilliant for a decade.

RIP Tony 🙏
On last nights game, weather conditions aside, Bernardo getting replaced instead of Hatate really was a head scratcher but turned out fine in the end so what do I know?.
Think I’m going to have to relive the highlights again to find a top 2 and 3 to sit alongside Bernardo. Toughy

SeS,
I’ve worded my previous post badly. I read last night’s posts and there were more about Erika Roe and that’s what drew my attention.
I was not trying to say those people who posted cared more about a streaker than they did about SFTB . I don’t think that nor intended to imply it..

Extremely gratifying to see Neilson playing Reo onside, unable to move his fat fouling arse in line.
We do Hatate an injustice by just describing his goal as “scored”
Great skill to take it on his chest, get it down and take it early with his left beyond Doohan.
A great pass and great goal.

Was an edgy game in the first half, second we completely dominated, but arguably they had the best chance to score.

However, given the conditions, the standard of Ref and VAR and Aberdeen’s first have heavy tackling, it was a fantastic result.

That support deserves a medal.

My MOTM
CCV – incredible performance in that wind. That tackle !!!!
Greg Taylor – his introduction changed the game. We dominated from that moment.
CalMac- everywhere. A lot of dirty work against cloggers. Real captain’s role.

How both Shinnie and Neilsen were not red carded after continuous fouling and both on yellows can only be put down to not giving us an advantage. Plain and simple. Peter Grant on CTV basically ripped the piss on Neilsen.

In your opinion Calmac occupies two men but there is little evidence of such.
If that was the case why did CCV and Trusty have no additional forward space to pass or move into?
They were constantly gesturing for midfielders to make themselves available for a forward pass but no space or movement appeared.

The weather won — horrible night for football that will be a star witness when the question of summer football comes up.

Couple of the players looked really spooked by the weather — AV and AT looked particularly uncomfortable.

Didn’t help as we look undercooked / low energy / wasteful / lacked focus.
Just a case that the Sheep looked shell shocked after their dip in form.
No pun intended but appropriate.

Take the points and move on.
Hopefully better weather will improve our play.

Hoping for some chat on the January window.
No excuses this time — we need to improve the squad.

Lhads and Lhasses:

Here is something different. Newly colourized and stabilized with German commentary, it is the best World Cup Final that was ever played. It’s 1954 in Berne. The Magnificent Magyars had destroyed England at Wembley, thrashed Germany in the Group games, and eliminated previous champions Brazil and Uruguay. ( The latter had thrashed Scotland 7-0 in the Group games ).

Note the skill and movement of the Hungarians. There is no fouling or diving, they just ride the vigorous German tackling. They skelp the woodwork several times, and the German keeper makes magnificent saves, yet they lose 3-2. I have no idea why the late equalizer by the magnificent Ferenc Puskas was chalked off. The Galloping Major of course later defected during the 1956 revolution and I saw him at Hampden in 1961 in the magnificent Real Madrid 7-3 win over Eintracht.

Enjoy. It is simply superb.

As the only, to my knowledge female poster on here I have to say I was quite shocked to see the pictures and references to Erika Roe last night. It was of it’s time and clearly some of the posters are still stuck in that time. I dont get upset by it, I just scroll past like everything else I see that I’m not wanting to see or read. *SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #22 ABERDEEN 0 CELTIC 1 (HATATE)*

Good evening, friends.
An apology (again!) – in my results post following the Ross County game I should also have included details on the Player Of The Month for November. So let’s start with that!
*PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR NOVEMBER*
The monthly award is based simply on the total votes received over that particular month. During November we had 6 games, 3 in the league (Kilmarnock, Hearts and Ross County), 2 home European ties (RB Leipzig and Club Brugge) and our League Cup Semi Final (Aberdeen).
Third place with 152 votes is Daizen Maeda whilst the runner up on 195 (normally enough to get 1st place) was Reo Hatate. But the clear runaway winner with 298 votes (and he only played in 5 of them!) is Nicolas Kuhn.
Monthly winners –
August – Calum McGregor 184
September – Paulo Bernardo 173
October – Liam Scales 168
November – Nicola Kuhn 298

And so to yesterday evening….
The biggest feature of the top of the table clash was the howling rain and gale force winds that made it very difficult for any decent football to break out. It was hard to know at times whether misplaced passes or overhit balls were solely down to the conditions and in those scenarios it can be very difficult in determining which 3 players were actually playing well!
A good through ball in the 2nd minute saw Kyogo bear down on the loose running ball. Doohan, the ex-Celtic keeper, got there first but took a real sore one from the knee of Kyogo. Doohan was already their 2nd choice goalie and I was sure he’d be carried off but fair play to him, a bit battered and bruised but he stayed on and ended up having a very good game.
The closest we came in that first half was a brilliant inswinging corner from the impressive Paulo Bernardo which curled straight into the far corner of the net. But Maeda was harshly judged to have impeded the keeper and the goal was disallowed.
Half time saw the introduction of Taylor for Valle, possibly due to Alex having picked up a yellow card. On 65 minutes Brendan introduced Idah and McCowan for Kyogo and Bernardo and we started to look a bit more threatening. That’s no slight on Kyogo who I thought had a good game with some fine touches but Idah gave us a bit more of a presence up front. 10 minutes later, another change when Forrest came on for Maeda and 2 minutes after that we made the breakthrough. Taylor had drifted infield as he often does and picked the ball up in space 30 yards from Aberdeen’s goal. A delightful chip to the well onside Hatate and a sensational finish from Reo saw the Champions break the deadlock.
Despite some late pressure from Aberdeen our Friendly Ghost and 2 central defenders stood firm and kept yet another clean sheet. Engels came on for the last 10 and was on the end of a hefty challenge for the ‘already on a yellow’ Shinnie. But the deserved 2nd yellow didn’t materialise – most unfortunate after I had stuck a half time quid on him being red carded at odds of 14/1!
So although the 3rd placed team closed the gap on us by 5 goals (reducing the goal difference advantage from 27 to 22…) we increased the gap at the top to 7 points with a game in hand. In other news Kilmarnock’s slump continues and sees them just 3 points off the bottom; which is nice.
We have now played 22 games this season, winning 18, drawing 3 and losing just the 1. We have scored 65 and conceded 17 (domestically it’s 55-7 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thank you sincerely to the 65 who voted this time around.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Schmeichel*: 19
Johnston: 3
Carter-Vickers: 59
Trusty*: 13
Valle: 0
McGregor: 16
Hatate: 34
Bernardo*: 24
Kuhn: 1
Kyogo: 0
Maeda: 0
Taylor: 19
Idah: 4
McCowan: 1
Forrest: 2
Engels: 0

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Aberdeen are –
Carter-Vickers – 5 points
Hatate – 4 points
Bernardo – 3 points
Schmeichel and Taylor – 2 points each

And the overall positions after 22 games played are –
41 points – Kuhn
35 points – Hatate
31 points – Scales
29 points – Bernardo and Maeda
27 points – McGregor
19 points – Schmeichel
18 points – Engels and Trusty
17 points – Johnston A
14 points – McCowan and Valle
12 points – Carter-Vickers
8 points – Kyogo
7 points – O’Riley and Taylor
5 points – Idah
3 points – Forrest
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley, Welsh

Next up it’s another 3pm Saturday home league game as we welcome Hibs to Celtic Park. Sadly, the pre-game meet at the fabled ‘Corner’ will be missing a fine man. RIP Tony Gillespie.
