Winning ugly FC
The funny old game is delivering a funny old season, who woulda thunk it!? Our topsy turvy campaign continued in a winning way as usual, but once again Celtic failed to sparkle.
There’s an old football adage that states a good side can grind out an ugly win on occasion, occasion being the key word. Our occasions are too often in my book, yet every other demographic screams out ‘fantastic season so far’.
This makes complaining about team form seem somewhat ridiculous, others envy our position of strength playing well or not, but I would much rather have a consistent flow rather than turning the spigot on and off.
That’s easier said than done, of course no team shines every single game, but the last three fixtures encapsulates our team. We delivered 9 points, scored 9 goals without response, yet most observers would agree we delivered one excellent half of football out of the 6 available. I’m not complaining, I’m delighted with our improvement under the Ulsterman, but it’s evident we are, we can be, an inconsistent side when it comes to team display. If I know that, Brendan knows that, and therefore fixing it should be on the priority list.
Why we blow hot and cold is the big question, but the last three games offer a root to the answer. A different lineup for each game. This tells me that rather than adopt a horses for courses approach, the manager is experimenting, presumably seeking the answer to the midfield conundrum. Which 3 offer the most together. Well, I do believe the past 9 days signposted the answer, something I’m sure won’t be lost on the manager.
One midfield combination resulted in our best half of football this season, with all three scoring. The other five halves of football were mostly today. It’s hardly rocket science to place said midfield combination above the others. That must be the lesson of those 3 games.
It’s encouraging to see Brendan has the balls to drop Engels occasionally despite the pricetag, ditto the inconsistent Reo despite the hype, I see them both as ‘moments men’, capable of that one piece of magic, capable of disappearing beyond that. On the other hand I see Bernardo as a player who makes Celtic tick, to coin an old phrase.
Many, including myself, did not agree with his substitution on Wednesday, he was fantastic last weekend, and on Saturday past was called in for more minutes. Surely his time has come to be given a starting slot and dare I say build the team around him? I wouldn’t ask the same of Reo nor Arne (at this moment) and that says it all. I think it’s time to pull ‘a Stan Petrov’ with the Portuguese ‘baller and tell him he’s got a run of games now to properly state his case. Consistency of selection has been known to lead to consistency of form, we’ve seen it in the past.
It’s great to preach from a position of strength, my concerns rise only from a desire for betterment rather than disdain which is always a good thing for any supporter, we’ve got some proper players and I envisage the entire club hitting ‘the next level’ if desired and correctly overseen. It’s certainly achievable, but it requires the Jekyll and Hyde part of Celtic to impart.
One single shot on target from Ross County, 9 from Hibs after a midfield switch-up, trends like that need fixed and fixed now.
We have hit December, the new guys are bedded in, the squad has grasped Brodge-ball, it’s genuinely time to start pinning your hat on certain players, and benching others.
We just watched 3 wins out of 3 since last Saturday, but did we just watch ‘the midfield pecking order’ be established?
I hope so.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #23 CELTIC 3 HIBS 0 (ENGELS, NEWELL (o.g.) KYOGO)*
Good evening, friends.
I don’t need anyone to tell me that standards are slipping. That’s in relation to my reports, not anything else! 4 consecutive days shepherding grandweans has wiped me out. So, apart from one brief observation, it’s the results only this time around….
You know those moments when you’ve had a few drinks and say something you might regret. Well, here goes – Kaspar Schmeichel is well on his way to becoming Celtic’s best EVER goalkeeper. Correctly decides when to punch and when to catch, great shot stopper, brilliant sweeper. If Sinisalo ever gets his chance, Kaspar could still play as sweeper. So there!
We have now played 23 games this season, winning 19, drawing 3 and losing just the 1. We have scored 68 and conceded 17 (domestically it’s 58-7 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thank you sincerely to the 82 who voted this time around.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked. Interesting to see 2 of our subs earn some points.
Schmeichel*: 81
Johnston*: 50
Trusty: 5
Scales: 10
Taylor: 11
McGregor*: 23
Engels: 2
McCowan: 7
Kuhn: 1
Idah: 0
Maeda: 0
Forrest: 17
Kyogo: 26
Yang: 13
Hatate: 0
Bernardo: 0
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Hibs are –
Schmeichel – 5 points
Johnston – 4 points
Kyogo – 3 points
McGregor – 2 points
Forrest – 1 point
And the overall positions after 23 games played are –
41 points – Kuhn
35 points – Hatate
31 points – Scales
29 points – Bernardo, Maeda and McGregor
24 points – Schmeichel
21 points – Johnston A
18 points – Engels and Trusty
17 points – Johnston A
14 points – McCowan and Valle
12 points – Carter-Vickers
11 points – Kyogo
7 points – O’Riley and Taylor
5 points – Idah
4 points – Forrest
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley, Welsh
We now face Champions league Matchday 6 when we travel to face Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday, kick off 5.45pm. And here’s a wee stat to warm the heart. Given that Celtic play one of the early kick off’s on Tuesday, were we to win then at 7.50pm we will be 6th in the table (for a few hours). We’d need to win by 11 to be 5th!!!
Hail Hail!
I’d suggest there are other mitigating factors to take into account when looking at the last three games.
Against RC and Aberdeen we started with CCV and Valle in defence. RC managed one shot on target.
Onto Aberdeen where one would expect a tough game.
Valle replaced at ht after a ridiculous yellow card, which along with the conditions, seemed to undermine him.
A difficult venue and more stringent test than Hibs at home. But we limited the home side to few opportunities- fewer than Hibs.
There is little doubt we are better defensively with CCV in. Decent right sided cover for him should be a priority as neither Welsh nor Nawrocki appear to be trusted. Replacing both with one good purchase would make sense. Given the care taken over CCV’s involvement a new defender would be guaranteed game time.
Playing Trusty on the right does not give proper balance.
The GT conundrum also causes issues,
Capable of game winning assists, but his positioning is exploited by opposing teams.
I, too, would like to see Bernardo given a proper run, he has grit and determination to go alongside his footballer instincts.
Excellent leader 👏 👏
I think everyone will agree, 3 wins out of 3 is very satisfactory in the last week 👍
But for me, these next two games are officially the ” Biggies”.
People will say, ” Nah, I’ll take the draw/win on Tuesday and forgo a defeat next Sunday”.
Bollocks !!!!!!!
The least we should be looking for is a draw on Tuesday and a definite win on Sunday.
Zagreb are on a terrible run of form and the Huns, despite what the Scottish Media would have you believe, are Shite !!!!!!!!!!
So come on Bhoys, this is the week for standing up and all 16 or 17 players,, ” Bring your A game with you”.
“Everyone” should really be up for the big fight. !!!
Don’t bring a knife or gun with you ???
Bring a Howitzer or an Excocet.
COYBIG 🍀 💚 🍀 💚 🍀 💚
Think you are being a tad harsh Mahe. . Compare and contrast with last December.
The squad is bigger and better. They have had a taste of The CL this year and know we can compete. We are so far in front in the league that on cold days in December even going through the motions is good enough. The fans are the same. It’s like watching the support acts as we await the headliners again, the CL and the cup final. The full squad is being used. We have no injuries. Everything is working to a T.
To be on the verge of qualifying for next part of CL
before Christmas, to be on the verge of overtaking the sum of both Ibrox clubs trophy haul and to have a double digit lead in the league race before Santa comes, to have scored 2 or more in 23 of the last 24 games, to have a goal difference of plus 40 after 15 games, to have only conceded 4 league goals ….. and we’re still not happy with some of the performances. Even in these halcyon season we love a reason to moan…..
MAHE
I’d happily win ugly in our next two games, and grudgingly the same right through till at least February. But really we shouldn’t be,and particularly not in domestic games. While the officiating doesn’t help,it cannot be used as an excuse for poor performances. Particularly not as often as we are seeing them this season.
Btw,the table has been updated for the naps competition.

And midweek sees AULDBHOY67 face the CHALMERSBHOY Beat-the-bookie challenge. Good luck,my man!
Beat the bookie.
Well another disappointing effort from myself 0/3,Atob unlucky with 2/3.
next up is Auldbhoy67 for the midweek games and followed by a previous winner Ccb for the weekend .
Goodluck to you both.
please let me know your selections well in advance
HH.
PB as a starter — progress required / still to become a full time asset.
PB for 30 minutes — number of good performances.
He is not helped by the dysfunctional nature of our MF.
Poor structure / poor set up / poor defensively.
CMcG directing traffic is not what we need.
Consequently it may be 18 months before we see real progress.
And that would be dependant on good scouting / buying / coaching.
Biggest issue — we have not made any progress in the past 18 months.
Today’s bad is not quite at the very low level of Feb / March 2024 bad.
But we are struggling to make progress.
Overall — we are very lumpy.
Huge amounts of talent but very varied application of the talent.
Tactics / playing patterns are starting to develop and mature.
However our defence is lacking both depth and cohesion.
Big January coming up — if we are serious about progressing then the gaps will need to be filled.
That and planning for the summer and making the most of the SPFL talent around us.
BR did not sound happy on Saturday night.
Too much on public display — we seen to be very unsettled.
Pulling off your star man after 45 minutes is a huge statement.
The international break seems to upset the applecart.
Upset it more than usual — timing not ideal.
Oh well — two games to define our season.
CL credibility / progress is critical.
Shock of the day …
U19 football vs Us vs the nation vs national decline.
Youth CL games — U19 level.
Trying to find the cut-off date / birth date for eligibility in the competition.
How does our squad for the CL youth games compare with our B Team.
B Team is seemingly U20 / CL Youth being U19.
Not found definitive answers so if anyone has the info please shout out.
However shock of the day — EUFA U19 NT competition in 2025 — Scotland aren’t in the Top 28 as they were knocked out in the pre-qualifiers. Luxembourg have managed to make it but not us.
Just how bad is Scottish football at the moment and where do we go from here?
Surely someone will notice before we die of shame?
Original question — should we run our B Team as an U19 team to align ourselves with the CL Youth games? Longer term ambition to maximise our focus on the CL?
2024/25 dates:
U19 — 2006 and up.
U20 — 2005 and up.
Who will make the jump to the first team squad for next season?
Daniel Cummings?
Austria loan contingent?
This is what Brendan said about putting Jamsie on:
“We were losing too many balls on the right side. So in order to push them back, you’ve got to retain the ball. James [who replaced Nicolas Kuhn at half-time]is probably the best player I’ve ever worked with in my career at retaining the ball on the side.”
I must admit that in Brendan’s first stint Jamsie drove me mad. For me, all he seemed to do was come back facing his own goal. Collect a pass from a defender. Control the ball and pass it back to the right back or a centre back.
He never turned and took on a defender.
Now it appears to have been done under instruction, so I should’ve cut him some slack.
I still didn’t like it.
Did anyone on here predict this:
Adjudged to be the best left-back in Brazil over the past year, Bernabei was named in the standout XI alongside the likes of 17-year-old wonderkid Estevao, who will soon join Chelsea for up to £51.4m (The Guardian), and Brazilian international midfielder Gerson.
Lost in Translation,
What are you talking about ??
Your moniker should be changed to ” Lost in Space”
Perhaps you’re that mad screwball, Dr Zachary Smith, or even that daft Robot.😁😁😁
Frodshambhoy,
Spot on, nobody would have predicted that !!!!
But here’s a rub, If he has improved that much and is worth millions, would Celtic consider keeping him ???
Or is this a no no ???
Hope you and Mrs F are well 👍

Prime time to cash in on Bernabei and use the proceeds, along with sales of Welsh and Nawrocki, to strengthen our defence.
Triple H,
No wonder people are moaning ..our goalkeeper is actually having to do stuff sometimes.
Hibs actually kept shooting at our goal like they wanted to win the game too! I know I’m getting tired of watching these shockingly bad 3-0 wins, aren’t you?
I’m telling you, one of these days one of these teams is actually going to win against us.
This team is ruining my Christmas.
Bah humbug!
Morning
Bernabei the best left back in Brazil? I knew the standards in Brazil had slipped from the lofty standards Djalma Santos, Junior and Branco the slip seems more like a plummet into an abyss. Mind you watching the second half of the recent Copa Libertadores final I think the current Celtic would beat either team.
Strange to read we are having a topsy turvy season. Saturday was pretty poor I’ll grant you – easily our worst domestic display this season but mostly we’ve played really well at some stage of every match except in Dortmund . Recently, I thought we played well enough in the second half against Ross County after a scintilating first 45 and on a miserable night for football we controled the game at Pittodrie almost throughout- against decent opponents who needed to win. Or is scoring 5 in a half now the benchmark? Does anything less signal we are in decline? How did you survive the 90s (even the one time we won the title we were often awful) or Barnes or Mowbray?
Of course Saturday’s poor show may be a portent of things to come and this season may turn sour but in what is a shitey, depressing world, Celtic has been a welcome ray of sunshine. Please do not add to the gloom.

Like yourself in BR’s first stint as coach I didn’t like JF’s play.
I thought he was a victim to what became Brendan’s strict adherence to possession football.
So yes James retained possession but never really showed his true potency.
I often moaned that he faced backward so it was obvious that he returned the ball in that direction.
Felt it was poor use of one of our faster players who if he had faced forward had the beating of most SPL opponents and could finish.
Find BR’s words on JF a little contradictory as for all the coaches superlatives he doesn’t get that much game time.
Last season he was mostly on bench till latter part and this season he gets more so perhaps age is a factor?
Or has BR just recently recognised his full attributes?
Celtic fans being targeted in Zagreb, be careful……

So it is. My brain is deep fried at the moment.
Lots of sense on the blog this morning that I am in agreement with. We were purring a few weeks ago with how well we were playing. BR has mixed the team up in the last 4/5 games as we have a punishing schedule so we’ve tailed off a bit. I think there are a few players who could produce more but week in week out it’s tough to be a 10/10. As long as there are no 2/10 in the next two games we’ll be more than fine. I’m hoping the rest that should be in the legs will tell and we can get two historic results. One to qualify for Europe past Christmas for the first time in a while and two to become the world’s most successful club. Now, we all know that is nonsense but I love taking the joy out of Huns lives. It’s just how I am.
Jimbo67
I would say that Kilmarnock away a couple of weeks ago, was our worst performance of the season.
How we came away with 3 points, I don’t know.
Well I do , we scored 2 goals. 🤣
But we really were very lucky that day

So normal? 😀
Mahe
The main reason for stuttering performance is rotation.
BR has a big squad to keep fresh and feel involved.
Playing a CB partnership that has not played much before, if at all, is like letting the front door open for burglars to walk in.
It’s risky but BR has enough confidence in the squad at his disposal to take the risks domestically.
Perhaps we should as well or have we become addicted to walks in the park?
St Tams
We did not play well at Rugby Park for most of that game I agree but did at least finish pretty comfortably – certainly compared to the first 70 minutes – and in control by full time but on Saturday I thought we never played well at any stage far less controling the game and for me it’s the only domestic match where at no stage did we look a good team.
December has become a real slog of a month for football over the last decade or so and I suspect there will be a few more days like Saturday before we reach 2025.
Jimbo
JIMBO67
Thank f**k I wasn’t the only one who thought we played well in the second half against County. Hit the woodwork a few times, and umpteen saves from the keeper.
And well done on watching the second half of Copa Libertadores,I only managed to sleep through the first on BBC3. As an aside, with a name like that, should it be called The Thomas,Lord Cochrane Cup?
Thing is though that we aren’t as good as our highs, nor as bad as our lows. There is definitely room for improvement but see where yet another £200m in the summer gets to just by travelling to Salford. Or ignoring the problems exposed by Liverpool a couple of years ago by thinking that an aging core can be supplemented by raw youth by going into the City.
Currently we have dropped two points (needlessly, admittedly) in the league. Are ahead of where most of us thought we would be at this stage in Europe. And have a shot at a trophy on Sunday.
Don’t worry,be happy. But be critical and constructive with it,because there is no reason for us to rest on our laurels-as Saturday proved yet again.
Total agreement Mahe.
I’ve mentioned it a few times now that BR is unsure of his best MF Trio. Yet, fans will tell him it certainly must include CalMac, Paolo and a.n.other. Probably Reo, but could easily be Luke.
I think squad rotation is a necessity this season, could explain a couple of disjointed performances
Seems 60% of Cup Final tickets went to Corporate, could explain why there was a 3rd ballot
JJ @ 8.49,
You are in trouble! I agreed with every word.
It may just have been the weather in Aberdeen but I thought CCV was struggling in the last 20 minutes. Hopefully, he is not injured.
In terms of incoming, I think fans will be underwhelmed by the January window. The Board will look at the performances of Engels and Idah and be reluctant to spend significantly. I suspect no incoming CBs unless both Welsh and Nawrocki leave. No incoming midfielder, so no Miller.
The priorities are LB but again Taylor and Valle will be seen as adequate to see out the season, then someone in August. Striker is a need but I am not sure Celtic will pay what it takes to get the guy from Brondby, or anyone at that level. Assuming Kuhn stays, which I think will be the case, a goal scoring wide player is the most likely recruit…Jota, the prodigal returns?
Have a nice day,
Rebus

Always intrigued by Calmac being a definite starter despite the area he occupies being one of our weaknesses.
Witness recent Hearts game where their young sub ran a fair distance straight down middle with Hatate and McGregor chasing as both on wrong side for guy to hit great shot to score.
Did not see Saturdays game but saw highlights.
Scales and Trusty not on same
page for numerous Hibs chances due to ballwatching but the most worrying thing to me was how much time Hibs had in midfield to play precision passes due to our midfield being all over the place.
Callum is not capable of being a defensive mid as he lacks the positional sense and tackling for that position.
By all means he could be first name on team sheet but not in his present role.
I watched this game yesterday. Probably the best game I’ve seen this season. 7 goals, all belters, with 2 of them from one of the best players in the world.
Here are the highlights, in less than 4 minutes.
If you can’t enjoy this, then I’m just lost for words. Just imagine what the experience was like for the home fans!

As someone who likes AP, yesterday’s game was a tough watch. But as a neutral/footballing fan, it was a helluva fun game to watch. Two teams that didnt even seem to care about defending.
Although, you have to think that injuries to VanDer Ven and Romero have definitely hindered AP’s plans. A VERY different team when the two of them are fit and playing.

as you say, if that is true (and, in my experience, Bada is normally pretty reliable, so I am assuming it is correct), then that is disgusting. Football, once the working man’s game, is now just a marketing tool for big corporations and the richest of the rich.

60% of Celtic’s L Cup final allocation of 21000 for the final? I’d normally raise an eyebrow at that one but I know that the supporters’ club of which I am a member – and which got at least 15 for the semi final on the FIRST ballot- got 2 tickets on the first ballot for the final, 1 on the second and NONE on the third. We got around a dozen tickets for each of the two most recent finals with Rangers.
To say I am unhappy at these developments is an understatement.

Fortunately I don’t hate anyone as long as they stand their round. Rule No 1,that.
And speaking of greed / insanity in sport … baseball’s Juan Soto signs a 15 year – $765 million contract with the New York mets. Someone did the math, and apparently it works out to about $100 per MINUTE for the next 15 years!
Ronaldo was on about $100 million per year in Saudi, and that would be tax free I believe. and it was only for 2 years.
Sounds like they both needed better agents ….Ronaldo would want a much longer contract, while Soto will think he is underpaid on his yearly salary!
