Nothing’s Ever Easy

Morning,all.

We knew we had a big week ahead of us heading into Saturday, three games in eight days encompassing three different competitions at different stages. I was kinda hoping that Saturday would give us a bit of a confidence booster, a nice wee stroll in the park against this season’s whipping boys. It didn’t quite turn out as I expected.

Sure,we returned them to the bottom of the league. And yes, many of us are still trying to figure out just how Kyogo managed to score his goal, probably will be no matter how many times we watch it. But as a confidence booster for the next two games? Hmmm, well…

What can we take from it? Well, three goals and a clean sheet will do me, and it is what the record books will state. But those who watched it will have been shocked at the lack of cohesion in each department of the side. Except perhaps the one that we all overlook, and it might be the most important of them all. Not for nothing did Cloughie go all in to persuade the best keeper around to sign for a second division side when he twisted the arm of Peter Shilton, this was a manager who knew the importance of every department to allow the team to function as a unit. It might only take a second to score a goal, but saving it at the other end is just as important.

Nine times Kasper Schmeichel broke Hibs hearts. (Sorry.) There wasn’t one player on the pitch who had a more significant role in deciding the final result, not even the three goal scorers. MOTM by a country mile, and deserving of every accolade and the extension-unless Real Madrid come calling!

But tonight will be another game entirely, and maybe just another game to him. If we had got the lucky draw against Fraserburgh-no disrespect-he would still prepare as methodically as he will have done for tonight against Dinamo Zagreb. As will all of the squad and all of the coaching staff. Taking things one game at a time only goes so far, and I’m sure that time will have been spent at Lennoxtown going over strategy and tactics well beforehand.

What can we expect from tonight? Well,a crowd every bit as passionate as our own is a given. A team who for years who have steamrollered the domestic opposition is a fact. A side in apparent decline and on a poor run of form is a matter of opinion and statistics. The bald fact is that they have seven points already and will be looking for another three. They’ve long banished their first day blues, an absolute thrashing by Bayern and have actually scored more points since than us.

It’s a game of football, and we all know that anything can happen. Hibs can visit the perennial champions and force the keeper into nine saves. Teams can win with 12% possession. Or from two down heading into added time. What can’t happen is for every department bar Kasper to be as dysfunctional as on Saturday. We need to be on our A-game from the off, and no excuses. No passengers either. Top form and top of the class all round and I reckon we can do this-and bag the next round into the bargain. Anything less and we will be biting our knuckles going into the new year.

No pressure then…

This morning we sit 20th in the Champions league table. As soon as our game kicks off, the ‘as it stands’ table’ will see us jump to 17th. If we take the lead we’d jump to 6th. It’s perfectly OK to dream!

Tough tie tonight, Zagreb has always been a difficult away gig for Celtic.
Domestically they are struggling, but as the Huns have shown on ample occasions, European nights afford some relief and escapism without the pressures to win.

I’ll take a draw.

My confidence or lack of it is moving up
and down as the game approaches.
Definitely winnable on a good day but we haven’t been very good recently. Maybe tonight’s the time to get back to our best.
Anything other than a defeat will do.

Draw tonight and big win on Sunday would suit me fine.

Tough game ahead.
Good contest — they are nobodies mugs in this season’s CL.
Well apart from BM and a very slow start.

The game will tell us a lot about where we are as a team.
We have the talent but we are still playing with L plates outside the SPFL.
They have wins away and a 42% possession stat.

EUFA MIB lottery — they are getting worse.
What is the bigger media market / who are the bigger TV draw?
Who is in this season’s CL narrative and who are on the naughty step?

No matter the result — can we kidnap a youth coaching team from the locality and set them up min G40? Even if the coach the local happy hoofers at U10 they will add something to our efforts.

I think we should be able to play some quality football.
They are good but hopefully we will have the confidence to play our game.
Performance more important than result.
We need to improve our game.

Celtic weans 1-0 down to Zagreb, after 30 seconds a fluke miss hit coming off the bar leading to a free header, both sides are playing well, Bonnar looks a talent

Watching the youths on TNT2. Dinamo Zagreb scored after 30 seconds but since then it’s been all Celtic, playing some really good football on a terrible surface that is fast heading towards the ole Baseball Ground standards!
20 minutes played but still 1 down.

Think the summer is definitely done.

Confident we will get a result tonight.

Have no doubt we will get something from Villa park.

And sitting on 8pts with YB still to play at home, it’s hard to see us not ending with more than the 10pts that would appear to be required.

Have really enjoyed this new CL format, it has reignited my interest in this tournament that I was fast losing interest in.

Glasgow Celtic for the win!

In the Youths league they only play 6 games, not 8, so this is the last one. The top 22 progress and Celtic are already guaranteed that. 10 new teams then join in (I think they are youth teams who win their domestic league but where their big team didn’t?). And the format for the round of 32 is –
Teams I top 6 play teams positioned 17 to 22.
Teams positioned 7 to 16 play one of the new 10 teams.
Celtic still have a fighting chance of top 6 but only if they win today. Dynamo Zagreb just win to get into the top 22. Should be good 2nd half.

Euro 2.1mill reasons to put on a show tonight.

If we really want to go places in the CL then we need to put in the effort.

I interesting to see games from 2016 and 2022 vs Govan FC.

How much has changed.

2016 — MF a-go-go with SB and NB in their pomp.

2022 — AaM much to the fore with RH in full flow.

Three big MF buys later — we have still some way to go with AaM particularly badly missed.

Phasers set to malky — show the world what we can do.

Failing that win.

When was the last time Celtic were odds on, away from home in a Champions league game!? No bets tonight. Well, not on our game anyway…

INIQUITOUS IV
December 10, 2024 4:46 pm

CELTIC: Schmeichel, Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Taylor, McGregor, Hatate, Bernardo, Kuhn, Kyogo, Maeda.

Subs: Sinisalo, Scales, Palma, Idah, Valle, Yang, McCowan, Nawrocki, Engels, Forrest, Ralston, Welsh

Can’t fathom Taylor for Valle, who is much faster. I read that, statistically, Zagreb are the fastest counterattacking team in the CL so far, despite their mixed results. This spells danger when we have a corner. Normally, we send both center backs up, leaving our fastest available defender or midfielder on the center circle. In the past, it has been Valle, Johnston, or even Forrest. That will not do today. One guy back when we get hit on the break will kill us. Despite being a really good defender, CCV is slow, so combining him with Taylor in an away game in Europe is asking for trouble. ( In my humble opinion, of course ).
As always, I hope the Hoops prove that these fears are ungrounded.😊

That team is not a huge surprise. Engels looks a bit short on confidence, so I can see why he isn’t starting..

However, for me, in a tough European away tie, I would prefer two mids who can defend even a little. And neither Calmac or Reo can tackle a fish supper, which leaves Bernardo to man the middle, basically on his own. Against the Croats who are always good tactically and technically, this could be dangerous.

Going forward in tough ties like this, I would like to see Engels and Bernardo play the deeper mid roles, and then either Calmac or Reo would the most advanced mid (Reo has more skill, but Calmac has a better shot, and shootng from distance would force defences out, and would give the forwards a bit of space behind to run into). When Calmac is playing, it Might almost be more of a 4231 rather than BR’s preferred 433, but against better quality Euro teams, I think it is the way to go.

and would not have Taylor starting. However, with Calmac the deep lying mid, Taylor seems to tuck in to the middle and play almost as an auxiilariy mid. However, this leaves the left side WAY too open to attack, and GT doesn’t make Izaguerre pace to get back and cover. But if Calmac was moved from the 6 to the 8, there wouldn’t be the same need for an auxiliary mid, which would mean that Valle could start, which would also be my preference.

With the squad BR is building, this is the sort of tie that Celtic should be looking to win (although cementing Celtic Park’s status as a tough place for visiting teams is probably the first priority). Is it winnable? For sure. There aren’t too many teams in the CL this year that I would say are just out of reach. But I do think beating teams like Zagrabe away is doable … but I think it would be more readily achievable if BR would simply listen to me a bit more. 🙂

Surprised there is as much optimism here going into this game. Our record away from home in Europe has been poor for most of the last 50 years and we’ve lost all 3 times we’ve played Dinamo in Zagreb. A draw would be a good result and I’d take it right now

Good luck Bhoys
