Much Ado About Nothing

Morning,all.

I think the only thing that we can take from last night is a valuable point. We learned very little about our players on the night, for none of them were able to hit the heights that we know they are capable of, and we learned even less about which of the midfielders we have available is suitable for a preferred starting role.

Even CalMac couldn’t get into his normal rhythm, and that he still made it into my three picks for the POTY Competition tells you how much below par we were. Yet overall I thought it was a decent watch, just without enough goal chances being created. A night for going-aw,damn-and kicking the cat. (It’s an expression, not an encouragement of animal cruelty.) Our manager stated after the match that he thought a lot of that was down to trying to make the killer pass too early. Well, he might be right, and he usually is. But the rest of our play was as dull as ditchwater, and usually ended with one of our players running up a blind alley, kicking it out of play, or simply passing it to an opponent.

To pit it more plainly, Zagreb were a poor side who were there for the taking. And we couldn’t do it. We played against a Hibs side on Saturday who are bottom of the league, but they created more than the home side last night. If this is the team which has won eighteen of the last nineteen titles, I reckon that Hibs should apply for a transfer to it right speedily. You wouldn’t think it possible that a team could play as badly as they did, yet we were little better. As soon as the ball got anywhere near the danger zone, our creativity collapsed.

On the one occasion that didn’t happen, a Zagreb defender nicked the ball from the waiting Idah to prevent a certain goal. That came about from possibly the only bit of magic we saw all night-a reverse pass from Forrest leading to an instant cutback from Engels for the tap-in for Idah. It happened right at the end of the game, and it would have been worth waiting for had it gone in. It didn’t, and overall it just summed up the night for us. We lacked the killer ball, and when we did find it, we found a defender doing what defenders do. The bastert. Heyho…

The referee mercifully only added three minutes to the allocated time, and left us to reflect on a point gained away from home or two points dropped against a poor opponent. I reckon they just dragged us down to their standard on the night, and we’ve seen that happen before to better teams than us. After all, their fans are probably wondering how a side as poor as us on the night can win twelve out of their last thirteen titles!

Two games left to go in the group, with Young Boys visiting us hoping to gain their first points of a miserable campaign for them before we visit Villa the following week. Villa are currently third in the table with thirteen points, while our nine points total so far sees us in nineteenth ahead of tonight’s final nine games of the round. I think it’s fair to say that the top eight finish is beyond us, and we now have to make sure that we get at least three points from those last two matches, and get to twelve points. As it is, there are only nine teams who cannot achieve the thirteen points which would put them above us. Two wins, three draws and only one defeat from six matches might look okay so far, but this is gonna be tighter than any of us would like.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.

⭐️👏☘️👍🍾

That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of

Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.

Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.

Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

Good lead article, as per. Let’s hope it doesn’t come down to goal difference.😱
As a fan group, we seem to have a schizophrenic position right now. Most, ( including me ) would have taken 19th before the competition started. But a win today would have made us 10th.
I have now watched the highlights of the other 8 games. I don’t think anyone could deny that, compared to these 16 teams, we were dreadful today, and I think Brendan’s demeanour indicates that he is aware of that. Not a glimmer of a smile in the interview I watched. For skill level, that game was more akin to a Conference League level game.
No pace, no determination, no cutting edge, non existent first touch control, no penetration, passing atrocious, and so easily brushed off the ball. The latter was alarming, as we will undoubtedly face physical tactics from Sevco on Sunday, ably abetted by Beaton, Muir et al. Putting Trusty and CCV up for corners, with no one on the edge of the box to collect headed clearances was almost suicidal, and could easily have been our downfall in the second half.
It’s a point gained, so why does it feel like such a downer? We have also needlessly increased the pressure on ourselves for the Young Boys game.

Point gained or two lost tonight?

When you consider that only 1 Point has been earned in our last 2 CL campaign, away from home?
Also taken Rodgers, 4 defeats, before gaining 2 back to back draws, in the last 2 CL away games?
Then we should be quiet pleased with another CL Point earned?

Yet tonight still has that 2 points lost, feel about it all the same.

Team selection, was as expected.
Our gameplan now, seems to involve trying to keep control of the game, without letting it get away from ourselves, especially away from home at CL level.
But we are still trying to rely upon moments of quality, in the last third, for which we still have plenty of players, well capable of producing and delivering?
Tonight it just didn’t happen for ourselves, against a team set up very well defensively, with a man marking system that worked out for themselves.

So overall, thinking a point gained, should be the better outlook, even if the 2 points dropped feeling, isn’t easy to shift at present

How many times do I have to tell you about making it so obvious?

Now, we know you get a kick out of gaining a little attention, because when you ain’t getting attention your posts just keep getting wilder until you do, or you start being snide to others.

We get that it’s been tough since 2012 😉 but talking rubbish about Celtic isn’t going to resurrect your favourite club.

Unbeaten since March my friend.

30 odd games unbeaten domestically.

One loss in this year’s champions league and about to qualify for the latter stages, making a skip full of money.

12 of the last 13 titles

10s of millions in reserve

Strong favourites to do ANOTHER treble.

The future’s never been brighter.

Believe me, we get that it’s hard to watch.

And I’d be gutted it my team ceased to exist too, but I’d find something else that gave me a little Ray of sunshine.

If you need any help with suggestions I’m always here, buddy 👍

P.s. At least when you rise today you’ll have gotten at least a little attention …that’s something i suppose.

Big overreaction generally about where we are in the food chain of this new format.
We were bottom of pot3 when the draw was made.
27th out of 36 teams in ranking terms.
Zagreb were 22nd btw.

We currently sit 19th in the league. With every chance of finishing somewhere in the top half (9-16) of the knockout placing. That’s success. The equivalent of a competitive pot2 team.
We are showing progress in a tough playground.

We are a long way off the quality required
to match the juggernauts in this competition. That much is obvious.
And I suspect whomever we play in the knockout round (assuming we don’t blow it v YB) will be too canny for us.

This experience is invaluable however.
Ourselves and Zagreb are punching well above our station given the disparity in quality in our respective leagues compared to all the other top 24 teams. Brugge arguably the same.

So, my point is let’s take a reality check, accept incremental progress and learn from it. And ensure we are ready for the qualifyiers next season to get back to this fantastic tournament.

76 men’s clubs have won a domestic treble, 27 of whom have done it more than once, with 131 trebles occurring overall. The first team to win a domestic treble was Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers in 1924–25. Scottish side Celtic has won the most domestic trebles, with eight. Celtic, Manchester City and Bayern Munich are the only men’s sides to have won both a domestic treble and a continental treble, but Celtic are the only one to win both in the same season. Celtic also hold the record for the most consecutive men’s domestic trebles, with four.

As ever, the Celts blazing a trail 🙂

The negative waves cognoscenti need to take a step back and look at what we are achieving.
To breach the top 24 in this inaugural competition will be a fantastic achievement for a team operating in such a poor domestic market.
That’s stage one of a process that hopefully has us participating for years to come.
The financial impact should keep us competitive enough to match others in the qualifying Champions route. Improving our seeding is another important aspect.

The template is quite simple. Dominate at home, enrich ourselves abroad. Climb the rankings.
We’ve shown what can be achieved by matching/ bettering teams which operate in vastly superior environments.

We will eventually reach our ceiling, I’d say a solid, competitive Pot2 side ( Brugge are currently in that position), but the signs are positive.

I think most of us are venting our frustration at how we are performing atm. More worryingly, why BR continuously allows a below par set of players to stay on the park for over an hour before making adjustments.
By half time a blind man could see that Maeda and Kühn were never going to hit the by line, Hatate was never going to keep hold of the ball or make a decent pass. Hook them after 45 ffs! That team were SFL at best but we are celebrating coming away with a point, the same way Scottish teams celebrate getting a point from us! If our euro form continues, we might be lucky to finish with 10 points. We should be 4-6 points better than where we are from the last two games but we’re only 2. The Brugge game was tough with a relieved earned point in the end but last night was brutal to watch and a disappointing result to say the least

December 11, 2024 9:00 am

Morning all

I know I said before the game that I’d take a draw and would have said 9 points was one more than my more optimistic self thought we’d be on so* I cannot complain but after the Red Bull win I’d thought we’d be nearer qualification than we are. We never looked like losing last night and had this been a two-legged tie with Zagreb I think we’d be pretty happy this morning.

However, despite dominating possession we never looked like winning either and was, although different in nature to the Hibs’ game, our joint worst display since Dortmund. We did defend competently enough but as an attacking force we looked stale and a bit timid. A Thing of Beauty has remarked that Reo Hatate gives either a 2/10 or a 9/10 performance- in the recent Hearts and Aberdeen games he managed to be both in the same 90 minutes- but last night he was 2. Bernardo is rarely less than okay, MacGregor is rarely downright bad – although he can be invisible- and I like McCowan but increasingly I am struggling to see what Arne Engels brings to the party when he is on the ball. His shot on goal- our only one on target- was timid and not one of a confident player. Up front Kyogo tries his hardest but gets no service and although Kuhn and Daizen have done brilliant things this season- and will I trust continue to do so- James Forrest still looks to be our best winger. On both flanks.

It’s far from doom and gloom and I think we are well ahead of where I thought we’d be 4 months ago we do seem to be in a bit of a trough- playing as though we’ve played 34 not 24 games so far this season. Sunday will, I hope, rejuvenate us for this season.

Jimbo

*My pessimistic self thought we’d be on 2.

This time last year we hit our slump and threw away our commanding lead to their ‘proper manager’.
It’s such a busy 3 months of fixtures with no break that I can’t help think we are managing our way through it with the squad and our game plans.
This year we are still getting the results. Sunday will tell us a lot.

I was astonished last night that Zagreb never once pressed us. Like a lower league team sitting back man marking, cutting off the angles and hoping we made a mistake and even when we did they couldn’t capitalise. They were depleted and seemed to be content with a draw as did we.
Let us off the leash on Sunday Brendan.

After the draw was made I must admit my expectations based on previous seasons were not too great.
Dortmund close to top 3 in Bundesliga and beaten finalists. Atalanta top scorers in Italy and top of league at the time. Villa an unknown qùality at this level with a good manager in Europe . Zagreb our biggest hope for anything away. I would have settled for 1point or max 2 points from these 4 away ties based on previous seasons.
At home Bratislava – a poor outfit really. RBL – second in Bundesliga – Brugge a difficult one to crack and Young Boys who arr never anything special. I expected 3 wins and one loss from our 4 home games at best. Never honestly seen us outclassing RBL and if we are all honest how many did on here when draw was made.
So I expected a max of 11 points and 10 being more realistic given our record in Europe recently.
We are bang on track to beat at least my expectations even after what can be described as a poor display last night. Did I expect to see us finish top 8 -no. Did I HOPE we would qualify for next stage – yes. Would I be disappointed to finish in bottom 8 ‐yes.

I believe we have shown great improvement this season in Europe . Took 4 points from 3 top sides we would previously have lost to. Gone 4 games without defeat for first time in over 35 yrs. Havent lost a home tie and scored 9 goals in the process.
Its not all doom and gloom and we can still improve to qualify for next stage.

I too am concerned about the dip in form from Kühn and Maeda. And Hatate and Engels as well. The first three did very little from the start while Engels continued in that vein and in his own current poor form when he came on. He is definitely not settling into our rhythm or our system

Hatate is indeed a 2 or a 9. At the moment he is not a 6,an 8 or a 10! On his day, etc,as we are always reminded, and the last of those was probably against Leipzig. If that was our and his peak for the season then BR has some thinking to do

Hoop hoop hooray –
Indeed! It’s €720,000 per point in the Champions League and €150,000 per point in the Europa. Our 9 points have won Celtic €6.3M whilst Sevco’s 10 yield only €1.5M.
There’s prize money for the eventual finishing position. Were we to scrape through in 24th place we’d get €4,575,000. Even if Sevco finished 1st in the league they’d only get €3.3M
The real irony here is that Celtic don’t need the money – we don’t spend most of it anyway!!!

After the Dortmund game,we were all in despair and wondering if Bratislava was as good as it gets. That we had more “Dortmund nights” to come.

We’ve avoided that with terrific results and performances against Leipzig and Atalanta, but I think those two gave us a false sense of belonging at the top table. Bruges and Zagreb have brought us crashing back to earth, even if-or maybe because-we had the beating of them both.

We need to up our game for the next one. Do that and the last two performances will be forgotten.

I had a look at the CL table to confirm what I thought.
RBL for all their position in the German League have not won a match in the CL.
This should be taken into account when using our game v RBL as a performance benchmark.
Either side in same table are Slovan Bratislava and Young Boys.
Brugge are a bloody good side and a point v them was a good result as was a point at Atlanta.
The lesson of Dortmund has been learned and the formation since has kept us in the hunt.
The RBL game result rests on the perception they were one of the big boys. They weren’t so a bit of balance required.
It could be we earn 9 points from 3 of the poorest teams in the competition at home.

Zagreb are at our level in CL terms so a draw not unexpected.

Realistically on CL form we should get 3 points from YB and the Villa game will depend on how Villa approach it.

Performances vs results — discuss !?!

New CL format is a big improvement.

All teams face the same challenge without the vagaries of the seeding system making it easy for some / hard for others.

6 games — 9 points / one being a gain plus an extra 4 being in the lost category.
Good position to be in but the recent football has been poor.

We have not settled after the NT break.

I fear that BR’s cunning little plan to focus on Sunday got out.
I hope BR does not play poker — the dogs in the street know his cards as they are dealt.

Plus his tactics and his set up would appear to becoming a little overbearing.
As noted above his press comments give too much away about his plans. I fear he is still trying to work out a way to keep Leicester in the EPL — forgetting that we need victories and not just saving ourselves from defeat. Circle of doom / no shots and he mentions that we jumped the gun — repeat gun — with some of our attacking play …

Then he is struggling to engage with our quality players — RH / AE / DM / NK.

So we have a confused squad trying to square the game they see in front of them with the detailed instructions BR sent them out with — cue chaos and a lumpy / disjointed performances from weak team effort.

Biggest fail last night was the number of times where we managed to play some into 5 yards of space and we didn’t make the most of the opportunity and allowed them to make up the 5 yards without any element of positive play. At times it looked as if we were running in treacle.

CL challenges — why we are still playing in L plates.

SPFL — binary opposition.
We come up against two types of players.
Those with skill and those with brawn aka the cloggers.

In the CL we come up against player types we are unfamiliar with — players with a bit of both.

We are faced with a physical challenge and lose out because the opposition add in a bit of skill.
We are faced with a skill challenge and lose out because the opposition put in a bit of brawn.
Both occasions — most of the team look confused that they have lost out and it hits their confidence.

Youth game — looked pretty even.
Biggest difference they played with intelligence when a chance came their way — total focus.
We just seemed to be playing a numbers game — make enough chances and one would count.
Eventually.

With that being the case, I am astounded at some of the criticisms I read here and elsewhere about how we are playing despite winning 3 and 4 nil.

With Celtic it’s always about the end result with me – did we win the game-trophy. I can very easily live with playing shit and still winning …in fact, I’d happily take that every week!

In fairness to Leipzig, they have had a very difficult schedule of games. Probably the worst in the tournament.

Very true but on the night I saw no qualities that put them in the Elite class, which has been confirmed when they played teams in that bracket.

Definite improvement in Europe, especially after that Dortmund debacle.

Folk saying historical performance in CL shouldn’t affect this team. That may be true.

However, it affects the fans and transmits thro’ the club.

So, if we are drawing v Young Boys at ‘85 minutes in a tense, nervous, funereal Paradise… a la Boavista 03 and Brugge ‘24 … we will all be damn glad we secured an away point last nite.

in 40 odd years of Away CL games we’ve won 2 and drawn 5 – to expect we can travel to Zagreb and bag our first Away win in 7 years is beyond hopeful. Totally agree with the tactic Not to Lose … it worked. When it should have become apparent the Zagreb team might succumb with a more attacking/pressing approach. The message either failed to register with players on the pitch, or they were unable to act.

either way, we have improved at this level with a fantastic opportunity to reach play-offs.

Very, very happy with this situation

but the recruitment team has work to do January window.. and we all knew this.

Next up … game on!

I had a terrible dose of the Partick Thistle syndrome leading up to the Zagreb game. In truth, the PT syndrome is very rare nowadays since they are now a struggling team in the Championship. However in the seventies the syndrome was verging on epidemic proportions! What is the PT syndrome? In short, it is winning when you are expected to lose, and, sadly, the reverse, losing when you are expected to win. Over at least two decades, this syndrome cost PT titles, cups, fans, and ultimately financial stability.

I have to confess, I was hit hard by the syndrome and fully expected Zagreb to gub us silly. In the round, I was happy with the outcome. What have I learned? Firstly, clearing snow seems to be an effective treatment for the syndrome. Secondly, expectations should be classed as a Class A stimulant….extremely dangerous if taken to extremes.

Points gained/lost in the CL are rather like the price you paid for your house. You might have got it for less if you had waited, but you might have had to pay more.

Brothers and sisters, let us take the point and be happy.

Further, let us hope that the PT syndrome has gone for good, especially during the YB game.

PT Syndrome — for a non ex Jag — is an awful lot worse.
It is losing 4 goals in 45 minutes at your first cup final.

Took years to recover — so any misfortune PT have suffered in the interim …
Wasn’t nearly half as bad as it should have been,

If Firhill was consumed by a Black Hole with bad breath — no tears shed by me.

Fan- I think squad rotation is a necessity this season, it has affected the fluency of the team

What importance might Villa and young boys place on their match with us given the very different positions both occupy in the table at this point?

Young boys have scored 2 goals and don’t have a single point.

Villa already have enough points to qualify for the next stage, as they have 13pts right now.

So I wonder how much emphasis both will be placing on their games with us, and wether by the time they play us they might have other things that they may be concentrating on.

Where as you would imagine we will be placing all our efforts on getting points from at least one of those matches, knowing 9pts may not be enough to see us qualify for the next stage.

Young boys already out and prioritizing their own domestic resulte?

Villa already having enough points and not desperate to win may be concentrating more on their own domestic results?

Wishful thinking?

You’ve hidden it very well up until now,but you’re evil, you are. Some of us are still scarred from that day in October 1971,and that’s a long time to carry that burden!

Not helped when in the late 90s,Bobby Lawrie would regularly pop into my local in Kilwinning to have a blether with his daughter who worked behind the bar. And to show me his medal.

To be honest,I congratulated him on it as they deserved it. But I don’t need f…..g reminding of it!

A friend of the family, an absolute Celtic diehard, has a Celtic shrine in the loft, the lot. loves reminiscing about players from the 60’s and 70’s ( who doesn’t)
Well, the poor soul has been laid up in a hospital bed at the Edin Royal. His health issues don’t appear to be his main issue however. His main concern is having to share a ward with Jimmy Bone in the next bed!

I was aware of your Maryhill Magyars background, because you told me in a telephone call early this year. I can’t remember if I told you that Alec Gray, Jags captain in 1971, and I played in the Bellahouston Youth Club table tennis team, back in 1962. He was my doubles partner. He also pinched a girl friend from me, the bassa.🤣. Amazingly, she and I are still in touch 62 years later!

“Biggest fail last night was the number of times where we managed to play some into 5 yards of space and we didn’t make the most of the opportunity and allowed them to make up the 5 yards without any element of positive play. At times it looked as if we were running in treacle.”

As with many other posters on here, I have given up reading your alphabet soup posts in detail. I merely scan them, focusing on paragraphs with no initials. This is a pity, because from time to time you make good points, like the one above from this morning.

That situation happened in the very first minute with Hatate, and was repeated ad nauseam throughout the game. Similarly, I was struck by the number of times Callum received the ball with 15 yards of clear space in front of him, but decided to pass it slowly sideways rather than taking the space.

I watched David Beckham throughout his career and saw him several times in the U.S.
Here was a player with no left foot, no heading ability, couldn’t tackle ( actually I think he could, but didn’t want to injure himself ), and couldn’t dribble. What he could do, in spades, was take advantage of what he could do, first touch instant control, magnificently accurate long passing, crossing, shooting, corners and free kicks, which he practiced relentlessly.

But the one thing I noticed most, while he was with Man U, England, Real Madrid, PSG, Milan or LA Galaxy, was that if he received a ball in space, whether it was 5 yards or 40 yards, he took it as fast as he could run, before passing, crossing, or shooting. I find it frustrating that many of our players receive the ball in plenty of space and immediately return it to the passer. I often wonder if they are even aware of the space, or have glanced around as the ball is arriving ( as the top players do ), or are operating under strict instructions.

Re the blog this morning, it is obviously replete with mixed emotions. Thinking positively, we didn’t expect to be in this position 6 months ago. Thinking negatively, Sevco recently met 2 teams with approximately the same number of reserves as Zagreb played yesterday, namely Steau and Nice. They took 6 points and 8 goals off them.

Maybe we were far too cautious?
