Time to be Agile
“We need to be a bit more agile in the transfer market” Ange Postecoglou
I’m very conflicted writing about Celtic these days, the awkwardness of watching your team simultaneously under and over achieve.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted with our position and would have snapped your hand off in July, but ironically the team are not playing to their best. I’m not here to berate anyone, but rather offer some good news, possible good news, maybe probable good news.
Today marks only 19 days until the winter transfer window opens, the squad has needs, given further progression in the CL is a real possibility alongside the guaranteed income via results that’s already very considerable, a bit of wheeling and dealing is surely on the horizon.
As the title suggests we need to be very agile in this window and from now on, I consider the last 2 windows a success but no one could mount a rational argument that those tasked with getting the signatures were agile, the summer was a drawn out affair.
But last summer also revealed some very interesting links, scouting, and sounding out procedures. If you’ll cast your mind back to probably the earliest link, a young striker Kvistgaarden of Brondy, his potential selling club President threw a huge figure out there straight away, 9 million Euro I believe.
Around the middle of the window Polish midfielder Bogusz Of LA United was thrown into the mix, the hefty fee of 9/10 million was soon mainstream. We all thought that was that, Celtic don’t pay that kinda money. Little did we know but we were going to go even bigger on another striker/midfielder combo. Whether Adam and Arne were seen as better on the park, a better fit etc, I don’t know, but I have checked on the two players we opted out on.
The young striker has 10 goals and 4 assists in 15 games this season.
The midfielder, who’s season just finished here in the US, bagged 16 goals with 8 assists over 36 matches.
This isn’t about sour grapes or coulda/shoulda, but we are looking in the right place for those are seriously impressive numbers.
I understand why we couldn’t sign all 4 players mentioned above, but there’s a lesson to be learnt from the two that got away.
The price was named, the player must have been amenable to the move, the wages therefore would have been okayed,,we moved elsewhere on both occasions, but the instinct that he was a real player was correct. Now their value has increased, probably out of our range.
But there’s plenty of fish in the sea, with our January trading I don’t want any protracted links and rumours, rather some of the agility necessary to walk in and out with a deal signed.
The lure of the club has never been so strong,,,final stages of Europe’s top table!? Almost pays for a new player itself, and more than journeymen pro’s will fancy jumping aboard this train when they can be registered and prolong the continental fight, perhaps become the ultimate hero. When that occurs, if a good player becomes affordable in a there-and-then situation like Kvistgaarden or Bogusz, just bite the bloody bullet Celtic and sign that man up lest the fish wriggle loose.
Our position tells us the summer was successful, the getaways tell us the targets were on point, last winter brought us our best player,,,get back to that list and just pay the fee, finally find that agility,,that’s my first Christmas wish.
And you never know, new faces might just kick this team back into top gear with perfect timing. Stranger things have happened.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #24 DINAMO ZAGREB 0 CELTIC 0*
Good evening, friends.
A point away from home leaves us well on course (and probably ahead of the original schedule) for securing a top 24 place and yet, at full time last night I still had that feeling of 2 points dropped. Not that Celtic really deserved anything more out of the game for our own lack of urgency, creativity and chances created. However, Zagreb were pretty poor, especially during the first half and a bit more effort could have seen us finally get an away win.
A very early booking for Taylor and a 37th minute one for Maeda were both of the soft variety but then meant that we had to be very careful down our own left hand side. And most of Zagreb’s more dangerous attacks in the second half certainly exploited that side of the park.
Equally, our own right hand side of the park often sees some of our best link up play with Johnston, Kuhn and Bernardo regularly hinting at better things during the first half. Having to replace Johnston at half time put a bit of a dampener on that. Not that long ago, big Tony was one of the best crossers of the ball we had. Recently he seems to have been trying to emulate last season’s Maeda.
Our 4 other subs (Engels and McCowan for Bernardo and Hatate on 64 minutes and then Idah and Forrest for Kyogo and Maeda on 72) did see us create a bit more in our attacking third. But ultimately, having only 1 shot on target during the game goes a long way to explain why we ended up not scoring.
Another good performance from Kaspar including a decent tip over late in the game from a looping header. Although I’m not convinced the effort would have crept in.
So, overall, a wee bit flat for me, continuing our recent run of games. But still a good result and another valuable point.
We have now played 24 games this season, winning 19, drawing 4 and losing just the 1. We have scored 68 and conceded 17 (domestically it’s 58-7 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
The performance also led to the lowest voter turnout of the season so far. But my sincere thanks go to the 56 who voted this time around.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Schmeichel: 26
Johnston: 3
Carter-Vickers: 25
Trusty*: 41
Taylor: 0
McGregor*: 15
Bernardo*: 45
Hatate: 1
Kuhn*: 10
Kyogo: 1
Maeda: 0
Ralston: 0
Engels: 0
McCowan: 1
Idah: 0
Forrest: 0
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Dinamo Zagreb are –
Bernardo – 5 points
Trusty – 4 points
Schmeichel – 3 points
Carter-Vickers – 2 points
McGregor – 1 point
And the overall positions after 24 games played are –
41 points – Kuhn
35 points – Hatate
34 points – Bernardo
31 points – Scales
30 points – McGregor
29 points – Maeda
27 points – Schmeichel
22 points – Trusty
21 points – Johnston A
18 points – Engels and Trusty
17 points – Johnston A
14 points – Carter-Vickers, McCowan and Valle
11 points – Kyogo
7 points – O’Riley and Taylor
5 points – Idah
4 points – Forrest
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley, Welsh
Our next game sees us try to win our first trophy of 2024-25. It’s a 3.30pm kick off on Sunday at Hampden Park where we face 13 years old Triggers Broom FC in the final of the Scottish League Cup. They are trying to win their 4th major trophy. We are trying to win our 26th since they were born and 118th overall. So, although my match report was a bit doom and gloom here are some stats that might cheer you up –
Scottish domestic trophy haul (major honours only – lower leagues and Ramsden’s cups don’t count!!)
Rangers: 53½ Leagues, 33 Scottish Cups, 27 League Cups, TOTAL 113½ (although they will claim the total is 114….)
Sevco: 1 League, 1 Scottish Cup, 1 League Cup, TOTAL 3
Rangers+Sevco: 54½ Leagues, 34 Scottish Cups, 28 League Cups, TOTAL 116½
Celtic: 54 Leagues, 42 Scottish Cups, 21 League Cups, TOTAL 117
I was reluctant to show the combined total for 2 completely different clubs. However, in discussions with any of them who invariably claim the ‘same club’ argument it’ll be good to know that they can’t even use that anymore to try to say that they have won more than Celtic. Our 55th league title is surely only 5 months away and we might only be a few days from winning our 118th domestic trophy.
Hail Hail!
Let’s just win on Sunday.
January signings? Hadn’t given it any thought yet.
No big outs in January.
Start the process of getting Jota back.
Give Motherwell what the want for Miller and leave him where he is till summer.
Find out what it’ll take to bring KT up the road, or get Valle permanently.
For the love of God buy a defensive midfielder!!! (Only been saying this since Broony retired)
Well I got my wish from last night’s football, Young Boys got smashed again and eliminated from this year’s champions league.
I also didn’t realise how bad a season they’re having …
In the Swiss super league they are mid-table after only winning 5 of 17 games 👀
Surely this means that we …no, don’t tempt fate, BAD 😐
Still on to achieve the 13pts I predicted
BAD
Before we play young boys we have 8 spl games and a league cup final. Thats a lot of potential for injuries.
Young boys play 2 Swiss games. One either side of a 6 week shutdown in Switzerland. They have had a disastrous first half of season. Hopefully it continues when we play them in 6 weeks but I’d rather be playing them next week…I think
Interesting points Mahe. But I am also in the Jota KT Valle camp.
Also, several continental clubs sniffing around Daniel Cummings. 6 goals in the CL youth league. Why wouldn’t we be interested in one of our own. Is it because we already know we won’t match what’s on offer elsewhere for a youth player as per Vata and Kelly or is it as Brendan mentioned, it takes more than scoring goals to become a Celtic player. 🤔 Tony Watt Mk 2 maybe?
Triple H,
Much to think about before we can turn out attentions back to that one game with YB.
Also hard not to get excited at the thought of how good this season could turn out to be, eh?
Your post has certainly brought me back to the here and now 👍
Total focus on Sunday’s cup final now!
HH 🏆🏆🏆
Interesting criteria to separate teams on same points in CL league stage:
Any win in our next game should be enough to see us through on points.
If it came to a tie 6 & 7 would be a problem for us so it would help to boost our goal difference.
Hopefully we get lots of shooting practice and goals on Sunday.
Hopefully selling Palma and Bernebei will help fund new additions, use Nawrocki in a deal if possible possibly Odin as well
Morning
Another date with the dentist today. Hopefully the last for a while.
Although, Celtic-wise, my thoughts are mainly focussed on Sunday, I do think Mahe has raised an interesting topic regarding January.
The last transfer window ended with more than a suggestion that Celtic’s plc board was now thinking about how having a strong team on the pitch, one capable of not merely making up the numbers in Europe- as opposed to how we stay just ahead of Rangers. Somebody at Celtic had that lightbulb moment of realisation that ‘being good on the park can be good for the business.’ The 3 biggest signings we made – Idah, Trusty and Engels- have not been massive hits yet but I am hopeful all will get better. I doubt we’ll spend £25m ( gross or net) in this window but I am hopeful we will strengthen further. If we don’t Celtic will stagnate.
I would hope we are looking for a left back and another forward, whilst, like B.A.D. of this parish I’d also like a more defensive minded midfielder – but I fear Brendan R. does not see that as a priority.
Rebus 67 posed a question yesterday about our manager’s (possible) lack of tactical variation. B.R. could point to the successes he has had since the spring of this year – and masterpieces like the first derby of this season, the two victories to date in the Champions’ League and the 6-0 win over Aberdeen are strong evidence in his favour- but I do think we are a bit inflexible all the same. How would Idah and Kyogo work as a twin strike force? Three at the back in some home league games? My pet peeve- and it’s one I’ve had for years- is playing our wingers on the ‘wrong’ side which means they invariably cut inside causing the play to narrow. I know both Forrest and Yang have had a half here or there playing on their ‘right’ side but how about switching Nicolas Kuhn on the left for the odd game or even more so during them? I think he’d rip every right back in our league apart if he switched occasionally. Just a thought.
Sunday? Well I suppose I cannot complain about the overall outcomes of every final we’ve played since we last lost one- in March 2012- but some of the performances in achieving those wins have been pretty lacklustre. I’m not asking for a repeat of the Scottish Cup finals of 1969 or 1972 or the League Cups of 1974 and 1997 but a better performance than last season’s cup final (or that shoot out win v Hearts 4 years ago) would be good – and better for my fingernails

———————————————————————————
We live in the age of the one footed footballer. Frustrating to watch at times.
Kuhn is the classic example. Plays on the right but his right foot only exists to stop him falling over. Always cuts inside to his natural left. An overlapping AJ is, effectively, Kuhn’s right foot.
No matter how good a position a one footed player gets to in a dangerous area of the park, they will always adjust to get the ball on their guid fit. Often the chance is gone as a result.
Cerny is exactly the same. We stand on his left peg and he becomes no danger whatsoever.
Very few genuine two footed players around now.
A good description of the KO CL phase can be found here:
https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/41040476/champions-league-draw-how-new-format-works
Its quite interesting. If the league standings were to finish like they are currently:
Celtic or Man City v Atletico Madrid or AC Milan
Great article Mahe!
Someone should forward that on to Michael Nicholson and get him moving. Now is no time to be resting on our laurels. It’s an excellent time to be pruning the squad further and adding a few more quality players.
I see the old “we need a DM” raising its head again. I totally agree but the club policy seems to be against it. We haven’t had a natural DM since Victor Wanyama. When we signed Broony he was the best box to box midfielder in the SPL and then we repeated that “trick” with Calmac. He can’t tackle a fish supper which is why his first tackle is usually a yellow card.
Watch this prediction come true within 15 mins on Sunday!

Interesting stuff — long overdue.
January will tell us much about the state of the club.
What kind of club are we?
A buying club — investing more funds in new players than we get from selling the old.
A trading club — using the proceeds of sales to buy new players.
A selling club — taking in more from sales that we use to buy new players.
Sort that out and we have a future going forward — we know where we stand and we can mark our efforts against a consistent plan.
One thing coming to the fore — CL as a single unified table is transforming the whole competition.
Instead of a series of very limited groups everybody is being marked against the whole competition.
Teams that have crashed and burned make an interesting list.
The usual suspects — smaller / marginal CL teams having a bad competition.
Some big surprises — big names / big league teams who have fallen off a cliff.
Great to have that contrast.
Gives a much more complete view of where everybody is.
Big teams playing big teams plus smaller teams playing smaller teams.
Hopefully no way back to the rigged / seeded groups.
New CL format — much reduces the space that any prospective Super League has play with.
Rich man’s competition would soon degrade to a Saudi style effort of nothingness.
Full of players on big wages appealing to Top Trumps style fans.
In other words — crap.
For me a priority signing would be a central midfield anchor.
Someone with game and positional sense for the role who can link play from back to front.
Our present midfield are less expansive in Europe than SPL due to a fear of turning ball over.
A more balanced midfield would cope with such

Tell me about it.
When I was coaching kids and doing my badges in Seaford in Sussex I set exercises up to finish with a shot or a cross. I always changed the exercise to end up on the right foot then left foot and told the kids to give it a go with their “wrong foot.”
The club had a connection with a guy who had coached in the Middle East and had been to the World Cup as a national coach, not manager.
In his first session with us he set up a right footed shot to finish. I asked him about setting up again to finish on the left foot. He told me that was a waste of time. His method was to improve people’s strengths rather than waste time on weaknesses.
He wouldn’t accept my argument that footballers should be able to use either foot 😡😡😡
Would Barca circa 2012 have been voted one of the best teams ever if they didn’t have a Busquets?? Would Fergie’s ManU have had the success they did without him converting one of the best ever box-to-box mids into a more defensive anchor? Would Pirlo have been the success he was without having a Gattuso to do a lot of the heavy lifting?
Some positions on the pitch require a specialist who has a very specific job to do. I have always felt that defensive midfielder is one of those positions. As much as I love Callum, he would benefit greatly from having a very disciplined no6 (Especially against the cluggers of Scotland) next to him.
I feel like I’ve been saying this for years but again I’m preparing myself for disappointment in January. Having said all that, I have to say I trust Brendan totally, so if he decided there are other priorities that come before that, I will be happy to go along with what he decides.
My favourite Celtic midfield had almost everything you could want in 4 football jerseys.

I would prefer Davie Hay then Neil Lennon. 🙂
Always need to take into account what Brendan is telling the wingers and mids to do, as opposed to what you might think they are doing themselves.
Anyone who isn’t following his instructions (to the letter) will quickly find themselves getting comfortable on the bench or in the stand.
I know our wide men cut inside a hell of a lot, but surely they would be out the team if they weren’t achieving the things he wants them to.
Think of the number of goals we score from our wingers cutting inside.
Auldheid,
Both absolutely brilliant at the job I just described.
Did we really appreciate how good Neil was at his job?
And to our shame, why we didn’t give the assassin the extra few quid a week he wanted made no sense …Really short-sighted

I know the players are playing to instruction and that generally we do well but would it not be worth our wingers switching sides now and again? (I am more in favour of such changes coming during games) Such variety might stop us becoming as predictable to play against ( and watch) as Brendan Rodgers’ teams sometimes have in the past.
I am no longer such a fan of Neil Lennon these days- let’s not go into why please- but I remember when I came back for a short visit to Scotland from Australia in the spring of 2007 I thought that he was just about the one outfield player we had who was possessed of that fabled ‘Celtic Class’. A really, really good player.
Jimbo
I completely understand the arguments for changes in the midfield but I fear there will be no recruitment in that area in January. We spent 11 million on Engels, 1 million on McCowan and 3.5 million on Bernardo. The Board will not sanction more cash going into this area. I would not blame them.
Has anyone looked at KT’s injury record? Check it out on Transfermkt. It is horrendous and anyone who spends serious money on him needs committed. I love him when he is injury free and I know he is Celtic through and through but anything other than pay as you play would be high risk for a club like Celtic. Sorry if that offends anyone.
I think we need the Brondby striker but I doubt we shall get him. A wide player who can score is more likely, possibly a loan. Yes, I know the Brondby guy can play on the wing but he has Bundesliga written all over him.
we might push the boat out for Valle but the issue there is he will have other offers.
Got to go,
Rebus
I would love a proper defensive mid for Europe. The problem with a defensive mid is we don’t need one in the spfl. And any prospects for the role we have signed in the past couldn’t get in the team ahead of broony and now calmac. In fact unless I am mistaken Engels played the anchor for Augsburg but we are ‘converting him into a Matt’ cos Calmac’s there.
I also think that wingers hitting the byline are in general more productive than being shown inside to traffic. Defenders would rather a ball came in front of them rather than from behind. Similarly forwards love cutbacks.
Jimbo,
Good post and I agree wholeheartedly.
Martin’s team wouldn’t have been anything like as successful without the foundation of Lambert and Lennon in the middle.
Would be good contest if you could put that early 2000s team up against our current one.

I think Martin’s team possibly lacked some of the required finesse to go really deep in the CL ( especially once Lubo left) – although it should have done better in 2003/4 after we threw points away in all 3 away games. This team is often very good to watch and is very modern in approach but it does not have what MON’s team had- Mr Henrik Larsson who would be the one player born after me who would, unquestionably, get into my all-time Celtic XI.
Jimbo
JIMBO67
I reckon The Maestro would be there too.
I think most agree on the need, at least in Europe, for a defensive mid. The problem is trying to fit one into the current system, and trying to fit one in while Calmac is shoehorned into the no. 6 role. They are related but different issues.
A defensive mid, and Calmac in the deeplying 6 role is not a good idea. Dont need 2 defensive or deep lying mids in the SPL, and it isn’t the best use of the players that are currently in the squad.
But people have to get away from the mindset that simply because Calmac is the captain, he is or should be the ‘on field’ general. Historically, many captains were defenders and even goal keepers, so not the key playmaker.
Calmac seems like a great person, and team mate, and is a great attacking mid. But he isn’t suited to the deep lying playmaker role.
I think that in Europe playing Bernardo and Engels as the deeper 2 (almost a 4231) could work. then it is Hatate (more skill/assists) or Calmac (better shot / goals) who would compete for the final midfield spot. McCowan it seems can fit in anywhere in the mid.
Bernardo would be the deeper lying ‘quarterback’, with Engels more box to box. When one presses, the other stays back. Calmac and / or Reo would play the more attacking mid role.
In Europe, both Engels and Bernardo can start plays (at present, everything goes out to the wings and teams know that and are doubling up on Kuhn and Maeda). If Bernardo makes the pass, Engels moves forward. If Bernardo runs with the ball (there is lots of room for Calmac to run into but it seems like he doesnt do so until late in games), then Engels holds deeper.
To me, it is a pretty obvious switch, and one that should, at least, be given a try.
BMCUWP
Paul McStay and Lubo would be the 2 who would be in contention – they and possibly Sutton would be on my bench. Lennon and Lambert would be in my thoughts too as would, on recent evidence, the current goalkeeper ( Kasper S) . But I can never really see past a merger of the Lions and the Quality Street Kids – and the King of Kings.
Jimbo
I think the Seville team would beat the current team handily. Hard to compare like for like as MON played almost a 3-5-2 with Thompson and Agathe as wingbacks, but with that caveat, here are my thoughts.
Goal keeper – Schmeichel is better. No question. Joe Hart came here and was so much better than I was expecting, and Schmeichel is a step up on Hart. Terrific. And provides real leadership.
I like CCV and Trusty, and Scales has come on leaps and bounds, but Mjalby, Balde and Valgaren are a class above. CCV does what he does very well, but isn’t mobile. Balde had a mistake in him, but Scales is too timid defensively. So, I would go with the Seville trio.
Right back/wingback – AJ vs. Agathe. Call it a draw. Agathe had pace, and could hit a good cross, but not so great defending. AJ’s positioning sometimes can be off, but he is a tough as nails defender, and has been looking better going forward.
Left back/wingback – Taylor vs. Alan Thompson. No contest. GT seems to be a good sort, and tries hard. But limited. AT, obviously isnt a left back, but was tough, and one of the best left foot crossers of the ball I can remember. AT.
Midfield – Petrov, Lennon and Lambert vs. Bernardo, Calmac and Reo (throw in Engels). Lambert was a great box to box player, and Petrov was great going forward. Lennon was up there with guys like Makelele as one of the greatest defensive mids I have seen (but got a nose bleed if he had to go forward). I think Bernardo is class, and I think Englels will prove to be too. Reo has skill and Calmac too. Had Calmac been played in the more forward role, instead of the 6, this would be a much closer. But, as it stands at present, I have to give the edge to the Seville team.
Forwards – Sutton and Larrson vs Maeda, Kyogo and Kuhn. Again, hard to compare because of formations. Sutton and Larsson are the best striking duo I have seen for Celtic, and were one of the best in Europe at the time. I love Kyogo, and think he is good enough to play as Haaland’s back up (as rumored), so cant pay him much higher compliment than that. But KoK is still better. Maeda is probably more fairly compared to Alan Thompson. Thompson is a better crosser of the ball, but few work harder and are more important to their system than Maeda. Kuhn is a great player. But if ihad to choose the forward line I would go with Seville.
Interesting stuff to the fore this week.
BR being a bit overbearing with the team and its play vs Working to instruction with the alternative being time on the bench.
I think we can see some sort of consensus starting to emerge from this.
1980’s vibe — PMcS / Maestro was the real deal and would grace any CFC team.
Loved his nickname — shite car though / one of BL’s worst efforts / wrong at every level.
Certain game in 1967 — WW / Wispy? would have been on the bench to make space.
Incoming …
January window — lots to do / too much in fact.
Next 9 months — need to bring in a full back 4 / couple of starters and a couple of spares.
MF — sort out the medium term plus find a tackler and a new captain for 2026.
Forwards — need some youth and a replacement for “young” JF.
Then there a bit of background on some loan moves and make sure we don’t get stiffed.
PB had his best game for us as a starter.
AE showed in one move why he was worth £10mill plus.
Both need support and coaching as in time to make the most of their talent.
Hopefully we can provide both.
Big issue over the next 2 CL games — the money that is available for two wins.
The 4 points we have dropped in the last two games has come at a huge cost.
We need to work the CL for all its worth.
Jimbo,
We’ll never know now, but might Seville have turned out very different if Lubo had hung around just a bit longer.
There’s a couple of Celtic games I’d like to see replayed!
We went from getting pushed around in 98 and 99, to absolute physical domination as soon as Martin arrived.
Remember the threat we posed at set-plays? Always brings a smile to my face.
Lubo’s deliveries 🙂

“I for one would be interested in your opinion on Young boys.
How seriously are they taking their last couple of games.
Will they be playing their strongest team
What it would mean to them if they take another big loss tonight.
Any indicators of what we might be facing by the time we need to face them.
Anything that might show that their past results could leave us with a better chance of getting all 3pts because they might have absolutely nothing to play for …well, except the money on offer.
I’d appreciate your opinion.”👍
————————————
Hi BAD:
I can’t answer your first 3 questions, but can take a stab at the others. I ended up watching the game on Spanish TV, as I can’t stand the U.S. commentators. The highlights are below.
With complete uncertainty as to how Man City, PSG, PSV and Stuttgart will do, and with all capable of leapfrogging us, we really need 3 points from Young Boys. They started out last night, all fired up, dedicating the game to the son of their Congolese striker Elia, who had just passed away. That’s why both teams are wearing black arm bands.
And sure enough, they dominated the early stages, culminating with their Polish midfielder Lakomy scoring a peach with a rocket from outside the box. They started out in a nominal 4-2-3-1, with ex-Sevco Itten up top, but were soon pressed back into a 5-3-2 or 5-4-1.
Stuttgart, given their remaining schedule, have a really good chance of qualifying, so started to take more control of the game, with very quick attacking moves. They were rewarded with a goal from German internationalist Stiller before the break.
In the second half, the Germans came out all guns blazing. Young Boys were a tad unlucky to lose the second goal, but their morale collapsed after that, with a noticeable reduction in effort. Stuttgart’s 3rd was a marvelously constructed set piece, their 4th was a cutback for a typical Idah/Giamoukakis type goal, and the 5th was a long range shot, as the Germans sought to improve their goal difference. The home team had 64% possession, and 20 shots to 5.
As for the Young Boys players, No. 3, left back Hadjam was poor, and Kuhn could have a field day. No 13 center back Camara, and front 3 Imeri (10), Itten (9) and Virginius (21) contributed little. No 77 Monteiro, left sided midfielder is a good player, and a big, fast lad. RB Athekame (24), CB Benito (23), and midfielders Lakomy and Ugriinic all tried very hard but had little support.
The Swiss packed their defence, and cleared virtually every high ball into the box, so that approach is not going to work for us. They did look very vulnerable to a Kyogo type darting run direct at goal ( we just need to find him!). Their league is set up like ours, with a top and bottom 6. They are sitting 9th, but having won 3 of their last 6, do not look like being relegated. They are 6 points off the top 6, so I think that will be their priority now. They have games on Dec 15, and 2 games either side of visiting Celtic Park, on Jan 18 and Jan 25, so they will have a month’s rest and one game 4 days before they meet us.
We need to win, so I think things will be tense, and they will probably be fairly relaxed. We just can’t afford to start slowly or ease up at all during the game. Most importantly, we will not do well with a slow, methodical build up, as we will end up facing a large, yellow wall. We need to attack at pace, and immediately on change of possession, to catch them short of numbers at the back. Lastly, their striker Elia will be back, so they will have more firepower up front.
Them’s my 2 cents.

I know it’s based on one of the all-time Celtic cliches but for us to have had Lubo even at the age he was in 98 in 2002/3 our history would be better -oh, to have been able to bring on even a 33 year old Lubo as opposed to Maloney in Seville!

I know what you mean about the 4 points we’ve missed out on but Bruges in particular was also a game which we could easily lost- they were quite a good team. But yeah Tuesday was one we should have won- to go to Zagreb and not look like losing is a sign of progress but we never looked like winning. We are , I think, getting nearer to where is a realistic place for us to be at in the European firmament but we are not there yet.

I think Lubo would have been 38yo by then, but I know what you mean. And we wouldn’t have had to suffer that useless referee either.

Starting the bi annual Fret Fest early are we? 🙂
At my age I’m in “que sera, sera” mode as I know nothing about how Celtic go about the recruitment business and specifics regarding whom we buy and sell.
I do hope there are signs to support the idea that Celtic flourish best if football is seen as the best way to balance the books as opposed to past policy where priorities were reversed.
Occasionally I see a player that I think would do well at Celtic, N Lennon, A Johnson in WCup and L McCowan at Dundee but I cannot think of any stand outs at present in Celtic’s price range.
The Zombie’s Chief Commercial Officer, Karim Virani, has jumped ship, only 15 months after having joined from West Ham.
Another job for Nils Koppen?
£32 million in the bank so far, and we still have 2 games to go

We are making progress — we are probably in a good place regarding talent.
just need to up our game with physicality and appetite for the competition.
Experience and maturity is where we have made progress.
Unfortunately from very low levels but still progress.
Squad needs work and BR needs to relax.
But noticeable progress all the same.
Plus there is quite a lot of dross in the CL every season — just that we have trouble finding it.
If Schmeichel gets injured we will be in real trouble.
21st in the football table.
26th in the financial table.
£150mill T/O — not looking the stretch objective it once was,
Hopefully we have a good home for all this revenue.
If we just pump up the wages of the players we already have then exec laziness has struck again.
Need to plan to grow and move forward.
New Main Stand — plus other bits — out of a £200mill investment fund should be the target.
Oh feck, their back again

Does Inq get paid less to report on EL games than on CL games? A handful have started, and several goals scored, but no reports?
I would have thought that, particularly with the holidays approaching, he would be working as many games as possible and earning as much as possible. I’m assuming that, with the number of games he watches, he must be getting paid by the game!

Hi Mike:
I’m working to rule. Last check from Mahe and BMCUWP bounced higher than Michael Jordan. I should have guessed. It was from Bank of Timland.
Games so far don’t look that inspiring, so I’m suffering from lack of enthusiasm. Saudi international just scored a belter for Roma. He was the Saudi star man when Saudi beat Argentina during the last World Cup.
