Celtic fail to peel the Tangerines
I recall the manager saying he had learnt his lesson earlier in the season when his raft of changes failed to inspire. Yesterday was similar, but the changes were most definitely forced upon him. I had underestimated the severity of the bug affecting the camp, but even with three of the usual back-four out the rearguard wasn’t breached, so defense was not the issue on the day. The other end of the pitch proved the problem point.
It was one of those days, the ball didn’t want to go into the back of the net. I got the midfield I asked for and as they peppered the goal from outside the 6 yard box I got the tactic I asked for, but we only worked their keeper three times in total from 17 shots,,our range efforts were poor.
Finishing chances created was also poor,,Kyogo, Maeda, Engels may all have buried those on another day, but didn’t on this particular day.
One might opine Yang and/or Palma was poor, possibly others too, but as explained on Saturday I wasn’t concerning myself with good or bad, rather just seeking three points by hook or by crook. Only one point travels back to Parkhead, and you know what, I’m not going to moan but rather accept the circumstances and just move on.
We won’t see that again, Yang and Ralston as the right side, both Twin Towers out simultaneously, only 3 on target from 17,,,it just wasn’t the usual Celtic yesterday. We don’t do nil-nil, I can’t recall the last time that scoreline appeared. The bar is set high enough that we now drop two points instead of gaining one, that’s a positive. We stay in a strong position for all remaining competitions having collected the completed one, I just can’t complain if a virus victim makeshift Celtic team completely dominates possession (78%), keeps a clean sheet, and takes something from the game.
It is what it is, we live to fight (better) another day and still have plenty of fish to fry.
For what it’s worth, I thought that although the actual football quality on display wasn’t great, it was a good crowd and atmosphere, decent enough surface, feels like a proper stadium,,,the Tangerines do add something to the top flight and it’s a fixture I can look forward to unlike certain others. I can see why they are mid table-ish,,,their shape makes them hard to beat as we found out. Now their defensive side is established, ideally they buy with the aim of strengthening their offensive side, and the SPL will genuinely have a new player in town.
We enter Christmas week with a scoreless draw but sitting pretty,,it’s gotta be said as we approach December’s end but January could be priceless.
More Ibrox pain.
More of a gap at the top.
More grasping for straws.
Qualify for CL knockouts.
Walk out of window stronger with new toys to play with absolutely cementing our position as not only domestic top dogs but prepared and clear favourites for any Champions League qualifiers that life throws at us.
A certain contract extension would really top off a fine month.
This time last year Santa Claus was famously boo-ed off the Park, but he infamously had the last say.
This time last year Brendan uttered his prophetic ‘this is when we come alive’ statement of intent.
We enter the holiest of weeks unbowed, unbroken, and born again on the biggest stage.
Our beloved Glasgow Celtic can test our patience and sanity at times, but it’s a gift to us all, one I’m delighted to share with you.
I won’t be writing another article until after the big day, so from Bobby and myself, with the greatest sincerity, Merry Christmas to each and every one of you.
We hope it’s a good one.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.
⭐️👏☘️👍🍾
That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.
Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

This drive has already raised approaching another £2000,so join in. The more, the merrier.
Default payment method seems to be ApplePay,which won’t suit everyone. There is an option on the page to change that to your preferred option.
The turn of Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust as beneficiary of our charity drive will end on December 31st,and we will begin fundraising for our next one on January 1st.
I’ll open the floor for nominations to all our kind-hearted readers as of now,and will announce the lucky recipient on December 27th,with donations from the 1st.
Just post your choice here, and I’ll count the backing as we go along. So if you agree with a particular nominee, signal your approval in a comment. It’s that simple.
Morning all,
Yes a tough watch yesterday but we’re still 9 points clear and unbeaten in the League.
I would certainly have taken that at start of the Season.
When I saw the defensive line up yesterday I cringed, yet my 3 for Jobo are
Welsh
Scales
Taylor
No midfielders and no forwards. 🤔🤔🤔
It’s a funny old game Saint !!!!!!!!!
Anyway, enjoy your day everyone 😁😁😁😁😁

“Tangerines do add something to the top flight”
Totally disagree, that was Sunday league stuff, tactics that shouldn’t be praised.
As I said during the game, those empty home seats where the sensible ones who stayed in the pub!
Great leader Mahe. Merry Christmas to you Bobby and all the sentinels on this fine site
D/Utd has more talent / ambition than they put on show yesterday.
They were set up to play a good team that did not show up.
Couple of passages of play that showed their abilities.
If they had opened up and made a game of it we would have been in trouble.
They didn’t which was to our benefit and both teams crawled over the line.
YHj — struggled to get into the game but the team did not help.
AR didn’t know what to do / LMcC played like a stranger / SW would not pass to him.
The whole right hand side was a black hole regarding team cohesion and positive play.
YHj is just the escape goat for a team failure.
We need to build him up not knock him down.
Shooting stats are interesting — we seem to be conditioned to beat the GK’er at all costs.
Fine margins and all that — just a case that we also beat the post in a bad way as well.
Our shooting stats in the LCF also told a strange story.
Govan FC had more shots on half the possession.
BR needs to get his head round these numbers and offer a better solution.
He sets up the way we play — very obvious that the team have instructions coming out of their ears.
We need a better way and we need a different way if the better way is struggling.
Yesterday the weather won but we did not put up much of a fight.
Prestonpans Bhoys
The SPL has a penchant for recycling the same mediocre and old fashioned coaches.
Meanwhile boardroom thought process follows in line with SFA and SPL mindset we will remain as a footballing backwater.

Zagreb 0 Celtic 0 – 2 weeks ago
Atalanta 0 Celtic 0 – October
I think we’ll be seeing a few more of them such is our poor return on shots on target and goals converted, given our high possession obsession.
Only one charity nomination so far. MacMillan Cancer Care. Which has four backers. As the lucky winner will be announced on Friday,I suggest you get a shift on if you want to nominate an alternative.

Did the fixture list I posted take any part in your thinking?
———
No not really. I think all teams will drop points during this Ultra marathon.
Obviously, the Huns are on their twice yearly high, and will feel confident of beating us on 2nd Jan. That comes though with the weight of expectations and they struggle with that and even if they beat us will drop points elsewhere.
Similarly, a misfiring Celtic can click quickly and go on a 8 game winning streak in this period.
I would be surprised if we weren’t well clear come Feb. ( We are already).
Watched 2nd half of Man U v Bournemouth yesterday.
They gave Man U a football lesson.
The two commentators were fulsome in their praise of Ryan Christie.
One was an ex pro and they rhymed off stats which were high on how effective he was for his team.
Don’t know who Bournemouth coach is but the team play very effective football.
He has switched Christie to a deeper lying central mid and Ryan is revelling in it.
With us he became a seagull hunting headless chicken who even comedy shows mocked.
Shows how much influence a coach can have on a players career.

Celtic play the way they do because it has been massively successful.
To suggest we change the way we do things simply cause we aren’t beating everyone 5_0 right now, would be stupid.
Why change something that has brought us overwhelming success?
Othere teams are entitled to try and win points and games, is that not what competition is supposed to be about?
Still unbeaten in Scotland and it’s Christmas in a couple of days.
Happy? jeez, I almost broke out a smile!

RC’s growth as a player on the south coast.
Spot on — it shows what a bit of coaching / imagination can do.
Does not show us in a great light but it absolutely traduces SC’s efforts for the NT.
RC’s transformation has totally passed him by — limited of thought / slow of action.
SC is better coach than this but I fear the NT job is too much for him.
SC = Steve Clarke not Sentinel Celts.
Yawn!
Ryan Christie? Maybe he was told that it he didn’t stop just playing for himself (Which became the norm with us) he wouldn’t be playing at all.
But if him having a purple patch after maybe growing up a bit is another excuse for a dig at Celtic, knock yourself out.
The team yesterday was missing its first choice CB pairing, our first choice RB and the whole right side of our attack.
Add in the weather, the opposition keeping 11 men behind the ball the whole game and the fact we had a gruelling cup final days ago, it’s hardly surprising we ended the game still drawing.
I was just happy to remain unbeaten after possibly our toughest week of the season to date.
A draw yesterday, wasn’t that bad a result, considering the team we had out, the conditions and the way the opposition set up.
I actually thought we played a lot worse at Kilmarnock, when we won 2-0 a few weeks ago.

Bournemouth manager is Andoni Iraola-who was my suggestion to replace Ange. Mind you,my suggestion to replace NL was Marco Silva, now at Fulham. Which prove I can’t be right all the time!

Thanks !
Bournemouth play a very fluid and balanced system.
I liked how quickly they went from defense to attack.
Full credit to Iraola for seeing something in RC that previous coaches didn’t.
St Tams
Truth is since cup semi our potent play has declined.
Yesterday was a repeat of recent form with loads of pointless possession and no threat.
Worrying thing is coaches have shown no attempt at rectifying.
Ipswich manager vs Bournemouth manager — what money are they on?
£1mill vs £3mill vs £5mill?
Medium term planning — would we be in with a shout?
Fan totally agree.
Coaches seem unsure how to change the system.
No harm in giving ball to opposition to then hit on break, or to go 4-4-2 or 3-5-2… whatever. But we remain too rigid.
FAN 1117
My thoughts too, although I think the decline was from the following game against Leipzig. While there’s no shame in not being able to match those spectacular highs, the fall from there has been alarming, and obvious to the majority of us.
Fan, too many players continue to be selected.
Whilst not performing.
Mcgregor, Hatate and Kyogo to name 3
Mahe
Glad to see the performance of the opposition being recognised as a reasonable contributing factor in order to reach a reasonable assessment of current situation.
Perhaps if that became part of the prematch thinking the post match analysis based more on emotion than reason will be more balanced in order to arrive at pragmatic solutions in the prevailing circumstances.
I think the fixture list should help us emerge at end of Jan with a comfortable enough gap to go into final stages of the season with a reasonable hope we will prevail.
That hope would be strengthened by a couple of experienced signings in transfer window but paradoxically a bigger gap would weaken the case that quality is needed to win the title. 2009 revisited.
BR just needs to ensure we go to Ibrox with a 9 point lead intact and I’m wondering should we play Valle at LB, move GT into midfield and play a front 3 of Kyogo, Idah and Maeda interchanging and 3 at the back from
Valle CCV and Scales or Trusty.
4 midfield from McGregor Bernardo McCowan Hatate Engles Taylor.
KF being selected — our biggest issue is that we have few alternatives.
Plus we are not playing to his strengths and support is limited.
AI is still learning the game and the effectiveness of last season has dissipated slightly.
I thinks tactics / set up is the bigger issue.
The players change but the weaknesses remain the same.
Rigid tactics / lack of shooting — no one wants to take responsibility.
Sad to see but CMcG is in a run of terrible form.
He is in the wrong position and the basics have left him.
Eventually he will become the whipping boy for our poor performances.
Better to try and fix it now and get him back into form.
2009 — the gap closed in 2008.
We had a full month to fix things and we ended up with Willo Flood.
18 years a failure made a complete erse of it to salve his ego.
After a disappointing result and underwhelming performance, the narrative on here often asks what EPL club can we copy. If it’s not Brentford it’s Brighton. Today it appears to be Bournemouth. Move aside Green Brigade, the Blue Rinse Brigade are in town.
Success for south London and south coast outfits is 17th in the EPL. Staying a member of that moneyed league is their sole ambition when the first ball is kicked in August. All three can afford to lose a dozen games a season, Celtic, not so much.
Brendan sees what we see, and the January window offers an opportunity to improve the quality of the squad. I am confident that we will.
Fan @11:17
My thoughts exactly. It’s becoming a worrying trend the last few games and I don’t think stating a negative reaction to yesterday’s performance as being blinded by emotions, just stating the bloomin’ obvious. A continued trend could see our gap cut to six by the first week in January if we continue to do the same things over and over, expecting a different outcome
Ricky Ross will be happy with yesterday’s result anyway.
The LEGEND.

Yup. There is a clear pattern here of some looking for a stick to beat Celtic with. We find what we look for.
There is something else that bothers me when BMCU says SC has anti Board stance but it is right to recognise good initiatives when they happen.
Why not start from a neutral stance, free from an initial judgement the Board are guilty unless proven innocent.
Cut out the labling to dismiss opposing views as pro Board, one of the reasons the late great SFTB reduced his thoughtful countering arguments.
Start from the basis Celtic have professional people in positions to run Celtic as a business in the football industry and their first job is to provide a stable and sustainable platform for the football to take place in.
Make allowances that as human beings they can get it wrong but as human beings they can learn from mistakes and get it right.
That is how life works. Being Celtic does not mean they are exempt from life’s workings.
Christie always was a player, he went to Aberdeen to bulk up, that gave him more strength to show his talent but suffered along with fellow team members to improve during Covid.
I’m pleased he is now constantly showing the good player that was always there in a team that play in an environment where playing below best is not acceptable.
What I will say is it is part of a managers job to spot where a player can give of his best. Jock Stein did it when he moved Bobby Murdoch to midfield from inside right.
On a totally different level I did it when managing a good works team when switching a decent CF (because the incumbent was best in the amateur league, ) to left back where he won player of the season award.
I think that yesterday showed that what was working before is not working now in circumstances that are likely to prevail until end of Jan at least, hence my suggestions of a solution that might work better until we get nearer to full strength.
Good to hear Brendan met DD in Dublin last week, a few in and hopefully a few out next month, needs refreshed a wee bit
JD @ 12.56
The issue is not who can we copy — the issue is who can we learn from.
We have done well with the talent.
To me the issue is set up and squad attitudes,
BR is the man in motion — he can change things on the training field.
He can push for better players to join the squad and freshen things up.
Plus he can pick the team to put onto the park with the right focus and desire.
Nobody is perfect so we should always be on the lookout for ways to improve.
Tough gig this leadership but we need to face up to the challenges..

Yup. At the first of the Roadshows that took place after Mowbray got sacked, ( roadshows that Jeanette Findlay suggested to Celtic were needed but Celtic never acknowledged where the suggestion came from ) PL stated that 2009 would be carved on his grave stone and he is right.
Celtic supporters never forget nor forgive.
However clinging to the past keeps it present and if we want change for the better in the future starting from now, we have to let go.
That 4-3-3 formation has it’s benefits on occasion, however it’s far too easy to suss out.
We’re playing the same system every single game, irrespective of where we are,or who we are against.
Club Brugge exposed and exploited the obvious flaws, and so did the zombie club albeit to a lesser extent.
The changes are mostly always like for like – a winger for another winger,a midfielder for another midfield, never varies.
Zero surprise factor whatsoever – it’s guaranteed, the opposition know what to expect, same as we all do.
That team is crying out for change.
Madness it is.

————
I totally get that and don’t see it as a dig at Celtic.
For me Christie filled out a bit at Aberdeen and came back a stronger player. He started playing very well for us then thought he was a superstar. Stopped being a team player, took almost every dead ball kick and hit most into the stands.
I always thought there was a player in there so the change of scenery and presumably change of attitude has helped.
Bluegrass.
It was you saying there was no excuses for the performance yesterday when there were obvious reasons why it was so I challenged from a reasoned basis.
I set out the difference between excuse and reason and the former is emotion driven a reaction without thinking and the latter a response after thinking.
Now emotions have settled a bit we can look at the prevailing circumstances and perhaps come up with solutions using what is at hand and who we will be playing against to get the desired result.
Just do what Dundee Utd and R2ngers did to us in quest for their desired result.
Getting through to end of Jan in all the prevailing circumstances is what matters.
If BR is not thinking the same I would be surprised if as has been suggested he is ego driven. What better way to keep ego intact than to show the ego knows what it’s doing?
Those that forget the past will be doomed to repeat it.

443 worked in that we can still qualify for next stage in CL are comfortably clear at the top and have a trophy in the cabinet.
Maeda Khun and James Forest played a part.
With only Maeda available and his understudies available not up to doing what the players they replaced can, there is a much stronger case for a different approach in the coming games.
We’ll see if it happens.
I favour my do unto others approach, more balls over the top, more players in midfield who can win 2nd balls and less playing around at the back to invite press.
Ugly football.
Fair enough Auldheid.

And the third is a very brief demonstration of how Ward-Prowse practices, in a conversation with Jimmy Butland. Ward-Prowse watched the techniques of Matt Le Tissier and David Beckham to learn how to do it as a kid and practices every day. He misses a lot in practice, but is catching up with Le Tissier’s total very quickly.
In the last couple of days, I’ve posted clips of Calhanoglu, Ward-Prowse, Juninho, Beckham, and Riquelme belting over 200 free kick goals, all because of practice. Last season, Celtic got ONE free kick on the frame of the goal. Every single other attempt was past the post, over the bar, or into the wall. What does that tell us?
And that’s the last from me on the topic.🤣
A Happy, Hoopy, Merry Christmas to all who post on this fine site, and to the two/three fine souls who make it all possible, Mahe, BMCUWP and ASWGL.

Thanks Auldheid for considering my emotions. That’s very kind.
Having had the benefit of a 24 hour period of letting my emotions settle down my reality check remains the same.
We were shit, UTD never laid a glove on us ( the only thing that surprised me considering our circumstances regarding our squad), we are changing like for like ( and too late in the game imo) but not changing the set up when we need to. Doesn’t look like we’ve tried a different set up in training either.
So I’ll repeat what I wrote yesterday, there’s no excuses for continuing to play the same turgid way all the time.
I keep hearing about the strong bench we have, well let’s unleash it. Don’t put us through misery for 70 mins
