Going Angst-Free

Morning,all.

Undoubtedly an angst-filled noon slot on Sunday as we toiled in terrible conditions against a Dundee United side which, despite their home advantage, played the entire match like a team in a relegation battle and desperate for a point. To any watching neutrals, it would be difficult to convince them that this was actually a side looking to consolidate their already tenuous hold on a European place. They added nothing whatsoever to the “occasion” but let’s be honest.

Neither did Celtic.

We went into the game on a high after winning the first trophy of the season, a trophy which removed any lingering claim of our opponents to be the most successful club in the world. Yes,we all know that the claim is a load of nonsense, and that is why we certainly won’t be claiming it, but it’s nice to take it off them anyway! We also had an entire week between games, our first (with the exception of international breaks) since the beginning of September over three months ago. We had, in other words, a pretty good time of it in midweek-except for the fact that some of our players succumbed to illness!

This led to a shake-up in the team, with five changes. We’ve seen earlier in the season, as BR took the chance to give some game time to otherwise underused members of the squad, that we struggle to adapt to having so many changes at once. And with gale-force winds and driving rain softening the pitch as well, it is little wonder that we struggled to impose ourselves on even the most supine of opponents.

Supine, that is, until we went anywhere near their goal! And there were precious few times when we did. Idah set up a glorious chance for Kyogo late on, and that was really just about that. The wee fella confounds me still when I watch replays of his goal against Hibs; his miss on Sunday will probably confound us all for a lot longer than that!

But it isn’t fair to highlight that moment as the one where we dropped two points. (And for most of us,it was two points lost, rather than a point gained.) The two points were lost all over the pitch. That chance aside, the service to the strikers was appalling. The midfield weren’t doing it, and neither were the wide players. Nobody came out of that day smelling of roses, frantically calling their agent to add a few minutes to their highlights reel.

We can all look back to performances since our double header of delight with Aberdeen in the semi and Leipzig in Europe, but we have won them all regardless! Our worst performances in that time have probably been against Aberdeen and Dundee United, both away from home, and last weekend’s cup final victory. But all have had one thing in common-utterly dreadful conditions.

We won the first two, and while I am disappointed with Sunday, I cannot deny the facts. That we have a nine point lead in the league, a trophy in the bag, and a very good chance of progress in Europe. We have also only lost one game domestically in this calendar year, along with one in Europe.

So I’ll bite back my post-match frustration, and point out that I’d have settled for all of the above if you had asked me in August. That Sunday was an aberration caused more by the conditions and the enforced changes, rather than the inevitable outcome of so many under-par performances recently.

Because I might be a tinsel-free fella at Christmas, but I’m buggered if I’m gonna let it ruin a great family day! I hope you all have a great family day too, even if that only includes a phone call to faraway family and friends. Enjoy it, folks. Life’s too short, and the fitba’s back on Thursday anyway!!!

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.

⭐️👏☘️👍🍾

That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of

Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.

Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.

Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

This drive has already raised approaching another £2000,so join in. The more, the merrier.

Default payment method seems to be ApplePay,which won’t suit everyone. There is an option on the page to change that to your preferred option.

The turn of Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust as beneficiary of our charity drive will end on December 31st,and we will begin fundraising for our next one on January 1st.

I’ll open the floor for nominations to all our kind-hearted readers as of now,and will announce the lucky recipient on December 27th,with donations from the 1st.

Just post your choice here, and I’ll count the backing as we go along. So if you agree with a particular nominee, signal your approval in a comment. It’s that simple.

POTY Competition Update

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #26 DUNDEE UNITED 0 CELTIC 0*
Good evening, friends.
Note – please see details at the end for a longer than usual voting window after our next game…
A pretty underwhelming performance yesterday in pretty blustery conditions saw Celtic fail to score for the first time, domestically, this season.
We completely dominated the first half in probably the most one sided away game of 2024 but frustratingly we failed to create any real, clear chances. The second half saw Dundee United come into it a little bit more but without really troubling Kasper Schmeichel. As he does in almost every game, Brendan made a couple of substitutions on the hour mark and for a wee while Palma and Idah looked to have given us a bit more urgency. But despite the further introductions of Bernardo and Engels the game eventually petered out to a nil nil draw.
We have now played 26 games this season, winning 19, drawing 6 and losing just the 1. We have scored 71 and conceded 20 (domestically it’s 61-10 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thanks as always to the 57 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked. Poor old Yang was the only player not to register a vote.
Schmeichel: 12
Ralston: 6
Welsh: 23
Scales: 40
Taylor: 38
McGregor*: 8
McCowan: 16
Hatate: 9
Yang: 0
Kyogo: 1
Maeda: 1
Palma*: 1
Idah*: 9
Bernardo: 2
Engels: 2
Naebdy-Else: 3
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Dundee United are –
Scales – 5 points
Taylor – 4 points
Welsh – 3 points
McCowan – 2 points
Schmeichel – 1 point
And the overall positions after 26 games played are –
43 points – Kuhn
36 points – Scales
35 points – Bernardo, Hatate
34 points – Maeda
32 points – Schmeichel
30 points – McGregor
22 points – Trusty
21 points – Johnston A
18 points – Engels
17 points – Carter-Vickers
16 points – McCowan
14 points – Valle
11 points – Kyogo and Taylor
7 points – O’Riley
5 points – Idah
4 points – Forrest
3 points – Welsh
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley

Our next game is a 3.00pm home league game against Motherwell on St Stephen’s Day. As me and Mrs Baldie are off to a wedding the next day (and staying overnight, woo hoo!) then the voting window will stay open until 2.00pm on Saturday 28th December with the results posted later that afternoon.
Hail Hail!

from 6.48 pm yesterday

”Celtic were never in a million years going let a form of Rangers disappear from the Scottish football landscape so anything that led to that was going to be resisted purely from a business perspective that supporters do not have to consider the consequences on the business of.”

—-///—-///

This paragraph sums up why some cannot support that Bord… and for as long as they remain on the payroll.

Please don’t add another string of links on forgiveness, as it’s not about forgiveness – they simply need to be gone! Seriously, no offence intended btw.

The utter nonsense that Celtic and the rest of Scottish football “needs’ a team playing out of Ibrox. The ongoing narrative that we don’t understand business, implications etc., the patronising bassas that they are…

Yes, We had empty stands…so what?! The folk that stayed away because there were no more OF games were only a short-term loss to the game and typical of the type of fan we shouldn’t really need in the long-term. They would be replaced, albeit that might take some time. The Sesette and I would be back at games …I know others who feel the same way.

Perhaps we had reached the end of full quota Season Tickets, in my opinion no bad thing. But I can see why that might scare the crap out the Bord. I like the idea of fans choosing to turn up to watch games in the expectation of being entertained. Some of us feel the current system is skewed away from entertainment due to guaranteed Full Houses…actors going through motions etc., etc.

I’m old enough to remember sometimes Jock Stein felt the need to entice fans to games. No bad thing.

Overall, There was an opportunity to reset the game in Scotland. Develop grass roots with less costly imports. A fair amount of poisonous bile removed. Yes, Another rival would emerge but without the benefit of 5Way and the impunity Sevco currently enjoy.

An opportunity was squandered. Due to shortsightedness. Now we have to operate in partnership ( don’t say it’s not that…the inbuilt voting rules etc..) with a club that knows we will bend over to accommodate their noxious schemes and whims. No consequences for thems.

Money isn’t everything and principles should matter.

Short sightedness by SPL,SFA and Old Firm have negated any chance of Scottish football improving.

SeS,

Celtic and Rangers isn’t about just football for the people who control what happens, it’s about us and them being totally occupied with hating each other. Sport keeps us busy with things that really don’t matter af in the grand scheme, but as long as we are caught up in hating another group of people, the less likely we are to be asking questions about the important stuff in life.

How much of our week is taken up by talking-thinking about our biggest rival?

SeS and Fan, spot on.
The running battles in the city centre before the cup final is testament to the monster that has grown out of Scottish football since 2012.
The chance for every team to grow and prosper vanished when they “rose from the dead” and were welcomed with open arms.
Forgiveness sticks in my craw with regards to our board during that episode I’m afraid.

Im in total agreement with that. There is too much water under the bridge for me,you and many others to view the board in a positive light. Too much damage which can’t be undone, whether that be the post-2012 actions, the Willo window, the McGinn window,or the constant downsizing for years for which we are still paying now-see our five and ten year coefficients for proof of that.

I’ll agree that recent efforts have seen some steps in the right direction, but there is still a long way to go. And a lot of the good work was immediately cancelled out by the return of Lawwell followed by the elevation of the chairman position to an executive role.

Interesting stuff — thought provoking and much needed.
Back in the day — hedges becoming part of SPFL folklore — some numbers came to the fore.
Chatted about at length in various Kirkie vs Kiltoon debates.

Full house crowd.

80% love the club through and through.
20% hate Govan FC and we are best stick to beat them with.

As you note the 20% are not critical to our success.
Lazy / low rent / low ability execs take note.

Govan FC — if it reverts to a south side Thistle then Scotland would be a better country.
Unfortunately too many of our politicians live it or fear it and they do their bit to keep them going.

If Scotland had a local HMRC then TFOD1.0 would have been saved.

Wee Eck would have made sure through the usual knuckle crunching / Rabbie Burns club channels that a deal would have been struck.

“Good King William III, Prince of Orange, who saved us from…brass money and wooden shoes.”

– Orangeman’s Toast.

Brass money and wooden shoes are one thing. King Billy couldn’t save them from Liquidation. Confetti shares, Mike Ashley, Castore and Umbro.

The ignominy.

So we’re saying that 45,000 SB holders at Ibrox were done. We’re saying that King and Park were finished. The Celtic Board put together a cunning plan to ensure some form of zombie club took up the slack?

There was always going to be some kind of club playing out of the lavvy. The Scottish establishment made sure of that.

Last weekend we played Dundee United with a squad value of £7m. They haven’t bought a player for two years.

“Dundee United’s turnover was down from £8.1million to £6.4million but the club reduced their operating loss – excluding player sales – by 45 per cent from £4.3m in 2022-23, wage costs from £6.9m to £5.2m and total costs by £3.8m or nearly 30 per cent.” December 2024 BBC.

On Stephens’ Day we play Motherwell and their £12m squad. Miller is valued at £4m. A third of the total squad value. They are (like many clubs in Scotland) in trouble financially.

Aberdeen have been smart in the transfer market. Their turnover last year was £23.6m.

Squad value of £18m.

How long would SB holders at Celtic have continued to shell out for the privilege of watching us play against clubs with squad values like these?

In 2012 there was no signed broadcasting deal. Cinch was the first sponsor that the SPFL managed to attract.

Celtic’s current squad value is £120m. What would the value of that squad be with a half empty stadium and a revised broadcasting deal?

It’s fantasy to suggest that the Ibrox support were done.

Modern football is about numbers…

The problem is, without the Glasgow Derby – there just aren’t enough.

You’d be watching Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea jerseys walking up and down Argyle Street.

Here’s a seasonal ditty for anyone caught in the belief that Rangers were about to completely disappear…

“Bualadh bos, bualadh bos,
buailfimís go léir,
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anocht,
Anuas an similéar.
ó, bualadh bos, bualadh bos,
Buailfimís go léir,
Tá Daidí na Nollag ag teacht anocht
Anuas an similéar.”

Quick question: What did Celtic spend net in 2008/9?

Merry Christmas everyone.

Big issue in all of this — if one thing changes everything changes.

Some might argue that we won the EC in 1967 off the back of the strength of Scottish football.
The SCDiv1 in the early 60’s was a battle royale with every man and his dog involved.
More competition made us stronger.

If Govan FC take a step back it is up to others to take a step forward.
In fact no matter what Govan FC do the SPFL needs to take a few steps forward.

The SPFL does not lack quality it lacks intensity and consistency.
M/well vs Killie — 75 minutes of can’t be ersed stodge / phoning it in.
Then 20 minutes of rampant mentalness / kitchen sink football.
The challenge of Scottish football in one game.
On the TV so we all get to see it.

The opportunities for the other clubs are huge if they can make the jump to talent development instead of an old pals act / control freaks with clipboards.

Too many use us — and them — as an excuse for their own lack of ambition.
Govan FC living within their means / taking a dive — huge opportunity for Scottish football.

I echo your thoughts.

I would have been happy to see no successor club appear and certainly not one parachuted into Div 3 stealing a place that should have gone to Spartans IIRC.

I’m sure the 6/7 teams – and their fans – who won silverware while McCoist dragged the second most expensive squad through the highlands and lowlands would have been quite happy too!

I might have been able to hold my nose and stomach a Govan XI floundering in mid table but 13 years on and we still have to stomach them trying to match us, spending every penny they have plus millions they DON’T have, pretending to be the same club, claiming the original clubs trophy haul and still making out that the “Old Firm” rivalry is still a living thing.

You’d think that a paltry 3 trophies in 13 seasons would have curbed the “WATP” and”Simply the Best” pish – but no. It absolutely grinds my gears!

What’s worse is that if the tribute act collapses in financial shame the authorities have ensured that the franchise can simply carry on under a new owner.

I only set out how I think Celtic as a business approached Res12 and I have a much more informed basis to express that view than anyone bar the other 3 requisitioners and the shareholders who were kept informed.

I was not suggesting forgiveness as in forgetting but I was reframeing events based on my knowledge of what took place, nothing more nothing less.

It’s up to you and others to consider the points and decide what to make of them.

I wish more than you could know that Celtic were true to the Christian ethos on which they were founded which is about love, not making money from hate.

I went into Res12 in the hope that the information provided to PL could be the start of a renewal where Celtic and support could reach some form of atonement or togetherness but that hope was naive as events have shown.

Betrayal of the ethos on which Celtic were founded is what took place and it wasn’t confined to The Board as the shareholders who supported Res12 well know.

You have every right to disagree my reframing since you did not have the information I had, but that does not give you the right to try and silence me telling how I see things.

So I’ll sing my song and dance my dance as the nature of rain is the same and causes flowers in the gardens and thorns in the desert until our host tell me to stop at which point I’ll find a less mean spirited place to sing.

If this place is only one of thorns I’ll leave.

May the true loving spirit of Christ mas hug you and everyone here in its arms.

2008/09 might not be the best season to use as a comparison. That is when many of us believe that Operation Save The R1ngers swung into full swing, with the board seemingly happy to sacrifice successive titles so that the huns could get their paws on potentially life-saving Champions League money.

Crayon FC statement

RANGERS FC has contacted the Scottish FA to express serious concerns and ask several questions regarding the swift reinstatement of the two VAR officials involved in the officiating failure during the recent Premier Sports Cup Final. We also note one of the officials has been appointed to an SPFL Premiership match involving the club that benefitted from the error.
The Scottish FA’s actions raise questions about their commitment to improving officiating standards and fostering accountability. While Rangers FC fully respects the independence of officiating appointments and the need for referees to operate without interference, how the Scottish FA handles such high-profile failures directly affects its credibility and public confidence.
The decision to reinstate the officials so quickly, and in particular for a fixture involving the club which benefited from the mistake in question, has drawn widespread media scrutiny on the officiating failure and officials concerned. This was both predictable and avoidable, and contradicts any stated duty of care from the Scottish FA towards their match officials.
Mistakes do happen in football, and how they are addressed matters enormously. We would urge the Scottish FA to demonstrate its desire to improve the quality and consistency of officiating and to do so in a transparent manner. We are not seeking to challenge the authority of the Scottish FA or the integrity or independence of match officials, but to encourage improved standards and accountability. This is not about influence. It is about good governance.
Rangers FC expects tangible steps to be taken and remains committed to holding the Scottish FA accountable in the interests of the game.
