Going Angst-Free

Morning,all.

Undoubtedly an angst-filled noon slot on Sunday as we toiled in terrible conditions against a Dundee United side which, despite their home advantage, played the entire match like a team in a relegation battle and desperate for a point. To any watching neutrals, it would be difficult to convince them that this was actually a side looking to consolidate their already tenuous hold on a European place. They added nothing whatsoever to the “occasion” but let’s be honest.

Neither did Celtic.

We went into the game on a high after winning the first trophy of the season, a trophy which removed any lingering claim of our opponents to be the most successful club in the world. Yes,we all know that the claim is a load of nonsense, and that is why we certainly won’t be claiming it, but it’s nice to take it off them anyway! We also had an entire week between games, our first (with the exception of international breaks) since the beginning of September over three months ago. We had, in other words, a pretty good time of it in midweek-except for the fact that some of our players succumbed to illness!

This led to a shake-up in the team, with five changes. We’ve seen earlier in the season, as BR took the chance to give some game time to otherwise underused members of the squad, that we struggle to adapt to having so many changes at once. And with gale-force winds and driving rain softening the pitch as well, it is little wonder that we struggled to impose ourselves on even the most supine of opponents.

Supine, that is, until we went anywhere near their goal! And there were precious few times when we did. Idah set up a glorious chance for Kyogo late on, and that was really just about that. The wee fella confounds me still when I watch replays of his goal against Hibs; his miss on Sunday will probably confound us all for a lot longer than that!

But it isn’t fair to highlight that moment as the one where we dropped two points. (And for most of us,it was two points lost, rather than a point gained.) The two points were lost all over the pitch. That chance aside, the service to the strikers was appalling. The midfield weren’t doing it, and neither were the wide players. Nobody came out of that day smelling of roses, frantically calling their agent to add a few minutes to their highlights reel.

We can all look back to performances since our double header of delight with Aberdeen in the semi and Leipzig in Europe, but we have won them all regardless! Our worst performances in that time have probably been against Aberdeen and Dundee United, both away from home, and last weekend’s cup final victory. But all have had one thing in common-utterly dreadful conditions.

We won the first two, and while I am disappointed with Sunday, I cannot deny the facts. That we have a nine point lead in the league, a trophy in the bag, and a very good chance of progress in Europe. We have also only lost one game domestically in this calendar year, along with one in Europe.

So I’ll bite back my post-match frustration, and point out that I’d have settled for all of the above if you had asked me in August. That Sunday was an aberration caused more by the conditions and the enforced changes, rather than the inevitable outcome of so many under-par performances recently.

Because I might be a tinsel-free fella at Christmas, but I’m buggered if I’m gonna let it ruin a great family day! I hope you all have a great family day too, even if that only includes a phone call to faraway family and friends. Enjoy it, folks. Life’s too short, and the fitba’s back on Thursday anyway!!!

In the true spirit of Christ mas I hope you will all indulge me when I post something that has greatly influenced me.

At the time of reading I had no idea I would find myself sending the message to so many that social media turned out to offer.

Just tell us that we never know how things will turn out – intit . (c) Canalamar.

December 25th
In John Powell’s book, Through Seasons of the Heart, he has a thought for every day of the year.
This was his thought at Christmas.

“There is an old Christian tradition that God sends each person into this world
with a special message to deliver
with a special song to sing for others,
with a special act of love to bestow.
No one else can speak my message, or sing my song, or offer my act of love.
These are entrusted only to me.
According to this tradition, the message may be spoken, the song sung,
the act of love delivered only to a few,
or to all the folk of a small town,
or to all the people in a large city,
or even to all the people in the whole world.
It all depends on God’s unique plan
for each person.
. . . Your message has been heard in my heart,
Your song has warmed my world,
And your love has brightened my darkness . . .”

Notice the BBC report on Statement O’Clock sleekitly implies that Connor was the senior VAR official. Same old, same old.

Regardless of the statement, it was predictably dumb of the SFA to allocate Connor one of our games so soon. They are probably in cahoots with the zombie club to get rid of Gollum, who was also dumb and unprofessional by using emotive language in reviewing the decision.

Talking of Conors, why on earth are the Sheep not bitching big time about Sevco essentially using one of their players for free? Does the Zombie club own his registration? Maybe they will just refuse to pay? Why is the arbitration continuing to drag on?

Questions, questions. Always with the questions, as one of my unfortunate primary school teachers used to say.🤣

In that same true Christ mas spirit I found this quote inspirational.

What we are is God’s gift to us”

This is a religious or philosophical belief that suggests that our existence is a blessing from a higher power. It can also mean that:

  • Our gifts and talents come from God
  • What we do with our gifts is a way to thank God
  • We have a distinct part to play in God’s plans
  • We were made to be loved and to love
  • Our presence in the world is part of God’s plan of reconciliation and healing

The full quote is “What we are is God’s gift to us. What we become is our gift to God”

When he used that saying in one of his books John Powell SJ said it would be a shame if we returned that gift unopened. That made me think.

I watched Paddington 2 the other day at my daughters suggestion. I had never watched either movie as I thought it was for kids, but the second movie in particular carried a very powerful message gift for anyone who opened it.

Bournesouprecipe.

Just read Rangers statement on referees.

It was a mistake bringing in Celtic benefitting into their argument. By doing so they are implying the official cheated to benefit Celtic.

Should have stuck with incompetence should be recognised and play a part in future appointment decisions.

They cannot help themselves, the underlying bias defines them.

Myself, Ralph G and Wullie Fox were possibly the best in that team but once I stalked Faddy and Roger to play the level started to rise.

A Christmas Story

He came into the bistro wearing dungarees. He was about 35-40 and his eyes had a burning intensity that typified someone in extremis. He knew exactly where he wanted to go…straight to the cooler that contained soft drinks and juices. Staring intently, as if each moment was precious, he perused the selection. He opened the cooler door, touched a can, then shook his head and exited the restaurant. This was repeated another twice before he selected a can of something fizzy and took it to the cashier.

After he had gone, I approached the lady who owned the bistro and asked what was going on. She told me that Albert(not his real name) was in and out each day and that he was a very sick man. Drugs were an issue but he also had a couple of chronic illnesses. He had been in the military. Some surmised that he had seen some horrors and this defined his future, others thought he was just a bum.

I asked if they would take a weekly sum from me to put behind the counter to use for Al’s comfort. We set up an envelope called Al’s Lunch and I filled it every week. The condition was that he was not to know who was donating. This went on for about a year. Al gave up asking who was doing this. He worked in a charity shop and he believed his boss was his benefactor.

About three weeks ago I went in to fill the envelope and asked if Al was still using it. Sadly, I was told Al was in palliative care in a home too far away for his mum to visit. Further, she was about to be evicted for a tenant who could afford a higher rent.

Poverty is not a Dickensian concept. It is here amongst us all, always. You can do what you like with your resources, but, I can tell you that you will get more out of giving to a specific person in need, than you will from most other purchases. Albert and his mother are the real faces of poverty. I gave his mum a Christmas meal and some presents.

All through the last year I thought how trivial all of our concerns are about Celtic and football in general. All the energy wasted in hate, when we could be helping others. I shall always love Celtic but I have learned perspective. Al and his mum taught me that.

Have a Happy Holiday!

Rebus

Auldheid,

Yip, that was a mistake, a lifetime of faux incompetence and latterly ‘VAR teething troubles’ were what Michael Nicolson got told, and BR being summoned to Hamdump, when we questioned VAR intervention.

Broadening the picture, Scottish refereeing is already predicated on a mistaken belief that someone can sit in Kings Park and decide who is best for what game and where.? It must be the only authority in football, that seems to make these choices on the basis of the referees surname or its ethnicity.

When they complained about Kevin Clancy he wasn’t allowed anywhere near IBrokes for nearly a full season, Celtic quite correctly aren’t in the debate and we take all surnames, regardless like any other normal football club.

The decision to effectively ‘ban’ referees ( at the behest of you know who ) was a cave in, and bound to lead to where we are. In fairness the SFA a fair and trustworthy employer? seem to have compounded the problem by appointing Willie Collum head of VAR? Mayhem ensues when yet another ‘one of them’ pops up as a linesman at Parkhead no less. It’s a very small pool from which to work but they did manage to shoe horn in, the same official in for the last four Celtic v Sevco fixtures, the right man for the job booked eight of them, but didn’t give them a penalty.

They’re not raging at all, more mischief making as deflection from their plight. They saw the gap and know they can’t fill it they have a stadium fiasco, jumping executives, ditched ‘stars’, the orange strip must be coming soon and the King’s speech tomorrow might mention ‘the penalty’.

Here’s a wee Christmas true story for you.
A few years ago I was reffing a County Cup match, and before the game one of the assistants told me he had ordered a new pair of boots on eBay, and they were only costing him £10. Not a bad price for a new pair of Predators (told you it was a few years ago). He showed me a picture of the boots, looked good.
It was several months before he was on another game with me, and I noticed he wasn’t wearing his new Predators. I asked him why. Had he been scammed? Did they not turn up?
No, they did turn up and they were brand new, but they had a problem. He told me he’d ordered size 11, and that’s what he received. Unfortunately, what he got was children’s size 11.
He was too embarrassed to send them back for a refund, and when I saw him recently he told me he still has them, and that is a true story. 😄😄

Does anyone know what this means:

“While Rangers FC fully respects the independence of officiating appointments and the need for referees to operate without interference, how the Scottish FA handles such high-profile failures directly affects its credibility and public confidence.

Independence of officiating appointments. Where do they get that from.
