Top against bottom
The table toppers and table propper uppers meet this weekend at Parkhead in a fixture many will view as a formality. I fully understand, the Champions elect and head held high representatives at European footballs top table just hit a superior side for four goals without even hitting top gear. But it’s a funny old game, which merits a degree of caution.
From a wider perspective the game is really showing it’s unpredictability everywhere. Domestically there’s a great battle for second place and the emergence of a new force to be reckoned with, plus Hearts and Hibs have been replaced by Dundee United and Saint Mirren in the hunt for Europe, while down south has turned into a circus. Last year’s darlings (Ange and Pep) are on the verge of getting sacked, while two new blokes sit 1st and 2nd, making a mockery of Arteta building a team to win the title. The other team in red being talked about positively in good old Notts Forrest, Man Utd only garner negative news. The Champions League itself, far to predictable for far too long is throwing up some true outliers like ourselves, Brest FC, Lille, so although almost everyone finds the new Swiss format much more exciting, I expect power plays behind the scenes to offer the biggest more security. Alongside this the old Superleague organizers won a court case allowing them to offer it without penalties from National Associations nor UEFA for taking part, its back on the table, but its a slow burner. Enjoy this format while you can, but definitely enjoy the anything can happen aspect of the beautiful game.
On Sunday some more tinkering could certainly happen,,let’s face it, a home fixture against the bottom team is generally the ideal fixture to rest players, especially if the following fixture is a must not lose fixture. I like to think there would be a psychological impact of bringing the Twin Towers back for Ibrox, ready and rested. I also like to think it’s the 40 million pound game, remaining unbeaten there puts one hand on the title and subsequent spoils. It’s therefore natural to prioritize it whilst also showing another top flight opponent a healthy degree of respect on Sunday. I expect football operations to take this approach.
It’s often said a squad player needs a run of starts to come upto speed, step forward Yang once again. He’s not disgraced himself recently, it’s a home fixture meaning he won’t take pelters, and I personally wouldn’t mind Kuhn getting just 20 or 30 minutes then starting at Ibrox. I’d give the Korean another run out.
I’d certainly start Kyogo with the aim of getting a goal or more and topping up his confidence tank, and I feel similar about Reo. Let him find his mojo at home then unleash him away, in a ‘one off must not lose’ game he’s usually an asset, and one would wish him to enter that occasion ideally scoring twice on the bounce beforehand to seriously boost the ego he doesn’t display but must surely have.
As much as I would include Reo, Kyogo, and Yang, I also see the ideal fixture to rest a certain player. A certain Captain. It’s highly unlikely he’s fully rested, but surely hauling him off as soon as possible would be the aim. The standard 60 minute sub would be perfectly fine and understandable I suppose, by there’s a part of me that longs to see a midfield trio of Hatate, Engels, Bernardo start a game together.
I’ve been consciously laying off Big Arne recently, I explained my reasons before, but today I listened to a Podcaster wonder if Celtic had made a mistake in buying him. Not even the New Year, and being questioned. I know it’s the pricetag, but jeez if we as a collective have learnt anything over this blogs lifespan, surely it’s the lesson that we accept settling in time given not only Kuhn, Daizen, Matt, of recent times, but numerous examples from the past.
Hit me up this time next year and ask me if Arnes capture has been a success, given we are on course for the quadruple we targeted (3 trophies and knockout phase) and he’s played his part, the facts aren’t yelling out he’s a flop. My personal take is that he’s playing it safe, not getting risky until he truly feels one hundred percent comfortable and in control,,and that will come. Even in risk adverse mode I’ve seen enough to realize he’s a proper footballer, and I take much heart from his team orientated celebrations. I think he will prove himself in the Hoops when all is said and done, his potential will be unlocked, the lad will become a Bhoy.
I’d keep playing him if I were Brendan, he’s already been benched despite the pricetag which was a good lesson to learn along the road to maturing, give him the minutes needed to grow.
I do expect another home victory to round out what has been one hell of a year regarding our beloved club, but more than likely everything above shall be disregarded and the Ibrox11 will start with half eventually getting hauled off.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.

That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of

In addition to the nominated treble (see above) there is also a weekly 6-team acca. Each of us is looking for a nailed on certainty, but there’s no such thing! But we only make one selection each, and all we ask is…
If yer daft enough to follow our advice, put a quid on each for the nominated charity as well!
The current drive got a £400 boost from this a couple of weeks back,so we are hoping to build on that.
Go on,folks. A quid? What are you waiting for?
Same as it ever was…

Same as it ever was …unfortunately.

Aye It has been some year …two defeats and all domestic trophies in the cabinet.
Totally agree with you on Engels, he’s young and still learning. A few noticed in his first few games he was comfortably bringing balls into feet then releasing automatically into specific spaces…without looking.
Often no one in hoops was there. E.g. a few times he positioned himself in centre circle jumped to win ball against opponent – utilising strength and skill in middle of park- then immediately rolled it towards Kyogo. Unfortunately our striker didn’t get the memo and wasn’t coming short …he was away in opposite direction running into channels … A few times this happened and we reached the conclusion the bold Arne was probably still relying on coaching from his other teams. Muscle memory, if you like…
Far be it from me to suggest Brendan should build everything around this guy … but I really liked what I saw …anyhoo, the point is he is obviously trying to adapt to how things get done around here. Sure he will! Feel his runs beyond the strikers and cut backs in recent games get the juices going for the players ‘round about him. He delivers to feet! Deadly is that ball in our sport of choice. Gets the punters off their seats too…
There must be some system/model that gets both Bernardo & Engels playing effectively & consistently in the same midfield. Balance and fine tuning will take time.
Methinks with one or two new players (pleeeaaasssse) in January, we might very well be in the vicinity of witnessing something special in the next 12 months.
AlmanacCSC 😊
Re Arne and Bernardo, the raw materials are most definitely there. A 21 and soon to be 23 year old pairing that need diligent coaching/managing. And the experience of playing together. In a demanding environment.
Luke also comes into that category, just turned 27 but a much more modest career path.
A lot to look forward to under BR’s mentorship.
One can see why Calmac is played game in , game out. His experience demands it.
Another seasoned pro in the midfield squad, say an Aaron Mooy type, would help ease the strain and bring on the inexperienced Bhoys.
Just sayin’ all of this 💯👍
Thanks Mahe for the article.
Thanks Auldheid for the response.
Arene was already playing in the Bundesliga. His price tag had increased significantly as a result.
At €11m, that’s huge money for us but it’s not a figure that would make a Chelsea or Liverpool think twice for a young guy on the cusp of the Belgian national side.
He’s young but I think in the last couple of games there’s signs of development. He’s now a CL player, Belgian international and has a League Cup medal in his pocket. All positives. It’s beginning to gel.
That’s two Motm awards so far, all feeding into that (apparently) all important Overall Rating of the player.
Fingers very much crossed that the change in recruitment strategy will pay dividends and highlight the benefits of Celtic to players, slightly further along the track in terms of their development.
SteveNaive,
That’s an interesting read
There’s a narrative in Scotland, that the “Old Firm” are the issue. Reduce their size or remove both clubs and Scottish sectarianism goes away.
That’s a cop out.
Xenophobia in Scotland is endemic. Throughout the media, politicians and the authorities.
Sevco aren’t the cause of it. They are the result of it.
We can all readily think of countless examples where the establishment has rallied together. Where the blind eye has been turned.
BBC Scotland would make Donald Trump blush.
The underlying demographics are changing.
Scotland probably needs about 50,000 to 75,000 immigrants (net) per year to maintain her working age population. Ironically many of those new Scots will come from the same countries where we are looking for footballers.
In time the Scottish identity will mirror the make-up of senior football clubs.
How will the New Scots change Scotland?
Have a great day everyone.

We’re on the same page👍🏻

Totally agree re the age old racism that permeates Scottish society.
It is cultivated at the highest levels and insidiously manifests itself in the Billy boy mentality.
Mahe, agree re.Arne . Its still early days for the young man . I would judge him this time next season and the price tag isn’t really lhis fault.
Can’t say that I agree about Yang. Although as you say he hasn’t disgraced himself. I haven’t seen anything from him to suggest that he can be a valuable member of tge squad. In my opinion he is just blocking an academy winger getting a chance on the bench.
No attempt to play the ball

Hear, Hear. Can’t wait to see it.
I’d like to see something like this tomorrow…Schmeichel, Ralston, Trusty, Scales, Valle, Bernardo, Engels, McCowan, Yang, Idah, Palma. All being well and good give Kuhn and Johnston twenty minutes at the end.

“Ironically many of those new Scots will come from the same countries where we are looking for footballers.”
Our last two who fit that profile of arriving in Scotland at a young age didn’t work out too well for us. Feruz and Dembele. I too would love to see that blip on the stats turned round-there are plenty of examples from England and Wales, after all.
Mahe
Tomorrow should quite literally be a stroll in the park. However, in autumn ’23 we played out a dour 0-0 stalemate v the Saints. It was one of those games that we could have played till midnight and not score. Given we had one of those days as recently as Tannadice I’m taking nothing for granted!
PS folks I’m looking at the Championship table. Falkirk and Livi are the top two. Both play on astro which has got me a bit concerned. Could we be up to 3 plastic pitches next season??
McCargo
Not Palma
Yang frustrating on one side, Palma on the other !
No and thrice no.
Watched DAFC v FALKIRK last night. Pretty good advert for championship. 3-3 draw and lots of fight in the game. Seems to be that every team who sack a manager always play a lot better in their next game . Why. Are the players trying to impress the next guy or showing the sacked manager what was possible. Never quite understood that one. DAFC sacked McPake 3 days before xmas.

Good afternoon, friends. Finally home from a fantastic wedding at the ole Seamill Hydro. Clearing up the MOTM emails and results should be out around 5.00pm. If you’ve not yet voted, please consider doing so by 4.45pm SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM
Another win, no injuries and hopefully some decent football on display. Get game wrapped up early doors.
No flaffing about please Celtic.

Much as I loved KT when we had him,and was delighted for him at the start he made with Arsenal,I just don’t think it is a wise move for him or us to bring him back.
I’m concerned about his injury profile, especially bearing in mind how he was battered up here when he was with us.
But a 100% fit KT,raring to go? A different matter entirely.

over to you….
—————————————
Lads, I was out last night. Just read back.
Story goes like this:
On a cold March night in 1967, we played Vojvodina, a superb Yugoslav side, in a European Cup quarter final second leg at a packed Parkhead ( or Celtic Park, if you prefer ). Big Packy, or Wee Packy at the time, was there, making a bloody nuisance of himself, and was in the company of Youngheid, later renamed Auldheid.
We were down 1-0 from the away leg, after Big Tam tried a Greg Taylor type square pass, which was pounced on by the Slavs. Stevie Chalmers brought us back to even stevens after about an hour, and Celtic pressed hard but unsuccessfully for a winner up to the 90th minute. At which point, Wee Packy, clutching a cold Bovril, and yearning for the warm casino lights of uptown Glenboig, said, “Eff this for a game o’ sojers”, and persuaded Youngheid to leave with him to beat the traffic and get an Uber.
When they reached the bottom of the stairs and were just about to leave the stadium, a deafening huge roar greeted Big Billy’s soaring headed goal from an exquisite Gallagher corner. Both of them missed it. In a rage, Wee Packy threw his Bovril over Youngheid, ruining his coat. Youngheid later sent him the dry cleaning bill, but Wee Packy never paid it. Thereafter, Wee Packy concocted a story that they had returned upstairs in time to see the goal, and now firmly believes it. Unfortunately for him, Youngheid had an eidetic memory and forgot nothing.
Another true story.
Not 100% certain, MAGS, but I think that’s how it went down.

Great work again, Jobo. 👏
But who in their right mind gave Yang a vote!!!? It’s scary to think they live among us…
As super Sally once said, we demand to know their name!…lol
😁
HH
Just a thought but,,,
I actually think Ange is doing well and Spurs should realize when he gets over this hump all involved will emerge stronger.
The case against him is based on league position and suicidal defending.
But it’s worth pointing out he doesn’t have any defenders, zero fit at the moment, and injuries have ravaged his season. Despite that they have managed to amass some historic wins that were unimaginable in the past and reached a semi final.
I’m glad to read about chants of Levy out rather than Ange out, and it’s blatant the media down there either don’t like him or need a hobby horse topic to keep public debate going.
Hail Hail
MAHE
The press have already turned on Amorim, and he’s only in the door five minutes!
Bobby,
Imo the rags are just trying to create headlines to boost sales, but the everyday fan can now see past the bullshit. Hence calls for Levy head, not Ange which tells me the rags influence is bigtime on the wane.
I’d be amazed if there’s a single United fan calling for Amorim, but the owners of the rags and TV producers, about 8 people maybe less, try to drive the agenda. It’s backfiring when their agenda doesn’t match the reality.
BTW I heard one of the modern greats of commentating retired, did his last match. Clive Tyldesly.
A great professional and voice of many a memorable game.
Call me Gerry
Here’s a snippet from Jobo’s post following the Hibs game:
Well, here goes – Kaspar Schmeichel is well on his way to becoming Celtic’s best EVER goalkeeper. Correctly decides when to punch and when to catch, great shot stopper, brilliant sweeper. If Sinisalo ever gets his chance, Kaspar could still play as sweeper. So there!
Thank you sincerely to the 82 who voted this time around.
The total votes cast for each player are as follows
Schmeichel 81*
I couldn’t believe one of the 82 voters didn’t rate Kasper in the top 3 when the outfield were awful and he pretty much single handedly saved us from a beating.
As an aside, keep a wee eye on the rags whilst your home as Im wondering what strategy they are taking, ie trying to unsettle someone, constantly flogging our best player? It’s hard to see a chink in the armour at present, so I’m curious to see what they’ve come up with.
MAHE
One of them had Leverkusen looking at CCV.
Btw,you can tell I don’t pay them much attention,as I can’t remember the source of either story I mentioned.
Bobby
That story was going around last night, the worst thing was there was some supporters not bothered if he left, what the actual feck are some fan’s smoking
Thanks IQV4
I don’t remember wee packy being so dismissive back then. Always stayed to the end. Maybe youngheid annoyed him that game
Frodshambhoy
Same culprit, no doubt lol
HH
Collective noun time again.
A sack of Portuguese managers
A waffle of Belgian managers
A craic of Irish managers
a lum of Scottish managers
a didgery of Aussie managers
just sayin
So with a 12point gap and the chance to increase it further over the next week the SMSM are ramping up the transfer rumours. Since last week Kyogo – CCV – Hatate – Kuhn – Welsh – Nawrocki and now Palma are all attracting clubs.
You couldnae make this stuff up honestly.
Jobo great stuff as per usual.
But some of the votes.
I take it some just watch the highlights.

Frodsham Bhoy 👍 good stuff overall buddy but dunno what the fuss over a ‘keeper just doing his job’ 😁 Jobo knows I’m just kidding- defo the best I’ve seen since The Holy Goalie for overall Presence.
Maggs – A Geezer of English managers…
Jobo – great work again …tho’ just cannot understand the ‘fuss’ over Schmeichel and what’s the Hampden Roar with the ‘missing’ Ralston votes/scores … stewards’ enquiry 🤓
Craig – Right! Thinking Cap on buddy 🤓 game today could mean only 2 defeats ( Hertz was obviously fixed )in full 12 months – how many times we have gone a Calendar Year with only 2 defeats…or is this the daftest Q ever considering the Invincible Year? That was Domestic not Europe Yeah?! August to May etc.
SES
I saw a graph recently of our defeats in the last 30 years. It doesn’t make for pretty reading! I think our highest was 17,while our next lowest was 6. Obviously a lot of them were in Europe, including qualifiers, but to only have lost two games is outstanding.
Let’s hope that continues today, and well into the new year.
JOBO
I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that Kasper Schmeichel may well be the best in my lifetime. Probably too soon to call it,but if he continues as he has done,he might just usurp Fraser Forster from his position as my No. 1.
