A Game of Assists

Celtic only went and pulled off a ‘Whitney Houston’ yesterday aka saving the best for last. The final fixture of 2024 was gratefully at home, and to round off a momentous year the Hoops turned on the style and for the second time in a row hit domestic opposition for four goals without reply.

The game itself was keenly anticipated and that was compounded by the teamsheet which fulfilled my Saturday wish of an Engels, Bernardo, Hatate trio in midfield. More changes came in the form of Valle and Kyogo being brought back into the starting 11, along with AJ resuming his usual berth. The result of the tinkering was everything we could have asked for. Celtic had a new leash of life about them, a fresh energy on the park, and despite just one goal as we approached the hour mark it was an obvious mismatch as the home side played with a true swagger. We not only completely dominated possession but found a fluidity that’s been missing for a spell. Our movement was fantastic, our pass and go tactic constantly opening up numerous options, our timing was onpoint all afternoon, hence the article title. The record books will show that Celtic scored 4 goals in total, the reality showed 3 different players finishing off four fine assists rather than scoring a self-made goal.

Reo had found his mojo, and started the romp with a defense splitting pass through the middle for our current best player to finish in his typical German style. It’s a pity Reo isn’t officilly credited with assisting the 2nd, but we all know it was his cheeky and audacious one-time chip into the box that brought about the goal. If Paolo had scored it would have been a goal-of-the-season contender, but Kyogo was poaching so no harm done by the initial save.
Arne turned provider for the 3rd with a whipping cross right into the dangerzone that was just begging to be finished, as was Bernardos inch perfect pass that curled a little bit directly onto Daizens right foot for the forth. Each assist has its own merits, but the unofficial Reo lob for the second was my favourite. All four were also pleasing from a tactical perspective, I would much rather have a team creating chances to score than relying on individual players to produce some magic.
Also on the tactics front our first three subs made an immediate impact on the game and quickly helped carve out a goal, they were clearly primed, focused, and ready for actions,,kudos all involved.

There were no failures on the day. I became a bigger fan of Valle, felt Arne played with determination and had one of his better games in the Hoops, I even thought Yang looked better than recently. POTY selection is a very hard decision, long may that continue.

Speaking of decisions, when your manager shuffles the pack and the team produces somewhat of a breakout performance, it’s natural to say ‘don’t change it!’. I’m not naive enough to believe that’s Callum benched now, but Im confident enough to believe Brendan will have learnt today’s lesson, the three foreign midfielders together are a formidable force and a great fallback formation.

The occasion, the week, heck even the season, was spiced up by events elsewhere, and we enter the new year a whopping 14 points ahead with the following day offering the opportunity to extend that gap by a further 3.
Just as we made yesterday’s clash look easy, we are making the SPL look easy, and I hope and pray we aim to continually make European qualification look exactly the same.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.
⭐️👏☘️👍🍾
That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.
Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

This drive has already raised approaching another £2000,so join in. The more, the merrier.

Default payment method seems to be ApplePay,which won’t suit everyone. There is an option on the page to change that to your preferred option.

Good morning, friends.
When quite a number of players play very well I know it gives many of you a headache in trying to whittle it down to just 3 nominations. But I know you won’t let me down. New voters always welcome! Usual polling times today – get the votes in by 9pm and see the results shortly after that.
Sorry I can’t make The Horseshoe today…

Good as you say Mahe, but…
Saints very poor but didn’t resort to thuggery like others.
Their lack of quality caused them to squander promising positions but that’s their problem.
Noticeable Brendan coaching the midfield, on one occasion to Bernardo by whistling and gesturing where he should be !
Pleasing how we’re keeping the faith and playing the game.

Then Arne & Bernardo for me.

The Derby on the 2nd now only becomes about local bragging rights. There is no long term competition from the current Huns team and management. That may change , but for now they remain a one game side show, capable of raising their levels when we visit ( hence scoring 7 against us this year), but otherwise unable to deal with the expectations ( misplaced) of the Hun hoardes in the longer game.

Love it.

SANLUIS,MAHE

I too was delighted by yesterday’s performance. Strung together two halves of very attacking football, which I’ve been desperate to see for a while. And just in time for Thursday too,so the timing couldn’t be much better!

I don’t normally say who got my POTY votes, but I thought both Bernardo and Engels were excellent. And I was so pleased to see Kyogo get back on the scoresheet that I gave him the third vote.

In truth, the votes could have gone to just about anyone.

I was also pleased that St Johnstone didn’t resort to the usual thuggery-though I was astonished at the BBC statto only recording one foul against them. Not so much with the disgraceful level of timewasting from their keeper.

17th May 1952 – Celtic FC played a charity match verses Belfast Celtic at Celtic Park, Belfast, and no, Whitney Houston wasn’t the half time entertainment, this player was, bit of a legend here in Scotland and certainly on the ‘Falls Rd…

Many years ago I attended a friendly v Penarol.
Watching from ‘my’ barrier high up the (original ) rangers end, a Penarol midfielder hit a pass forward about twenty five yards, ( dugout side, halfway in and down his own half) about an inch off the ground, that went straight as an arrow but bent towards the on running forward at the end of its travel.
St Johnstone player ( no 22 i think) did the exact same yesterday.
Nothing came of both but great technique.

But so was this player one – Jackie Vernon, a legend on the Falls Rd, Belfast Celtic through and through. His family had a butchers business and later so did Jackie. His was a legitimate trade. I learned a lot about this great and talented player, watching pictures of him with youngsters listening to his every word and wearing his International caps. Jackie was much in demand as a player and he attracted many offers to play in England, but he held out for years to play for his beloved Belfast Celtic, much later he would sign for WBA.

This game between Celtic FC and Belfast Celtic, was held at Celtic Park Belfast aprox. three years after Belfast Celtic resigned from the League, couldn’t guarantee their players safety, the reason the old park remained for 5/6 years after they folded was because of the Greyhound racing which was part of the structure of Celtic Park, clearly named after Glasgow’s Celtic Park. Here you must pay tribute to our great club for giving generously to help them get started.
This game -17th May 1952 was in aid of the ‘De La Salle’ boys home, Celtic provided the strips and no doubt donated large to this charitable cause.

Jackie Vernon and his wife died within 24 hours of each other and were buried together on the same day, I got the shock of my life because when both coffins were carried into the chapel, the man wearing the blazer carrying the coffin at the front was the spitting image of my old man, it wasn’t of course but?
Jackie Vernon and Charlie Tully, two of the legends of the Falls road, leading out their respective teams in front of a 30,000 crowd as they sang – “Will Yeah No Come Back Again”, beats Whitney hands down……….

This one made my day Bobby.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Paddy Joe Hill this morning.

One of The Birmingham 6 , beaten into submission and framed for the bombings at Birmingham pubs in 1974.

Having served 16 years in prison, the 6 eventually walked free in 1991.

Collusion and subterfuge by the British Establishment to convict 6 scapegoats to appease the British public.

Paddy Joe established MOJO – Miscarriage Of Justice Organisation in Glasgow in 2001.

The organisation carries on his work to this day.

Glasgow based band The Lynsey Dolan Band penned and performed this at his wedding celebration in Glasgow Central Hotel c. 2005 , I believe.

Possibly the most disturbing part is the amost lack of complete accountability of any of the people involved, whether it be police or law, for cases like the B6 or the G4. In fact, a good many of them, if not most of them, endedup being promoted to the highest echelons of their professions.

A terrible indictment of not only the individuals involved, but even more so of my profession and the entire political system.

Hard to argue that the system isn’t broken…. except that, from the perspective of those who run/benefit from the system, it is working exactly as those in power intended.

Hope you and Joan and the pack are doing well. I dont post as often these days, but do appreciate you keeping me and everyone updated on Joan and yourself.

I”m working for a few hours, but will check out early today. Taking mum to the Dominican this week. A bit of sun and sand will be nice. Between taking ill and moving into a retirement home, she has had a tough year. Fortunately, she has recovered, and is now doing better than in years, but I think a break will do her a world of good.

Calmac,GT and Liam Scales all nailed on to start Thursday’s game.

Sometimes it’s about mentality, and you need that Scottish and Irish mindset on occasion.

The warrior spirit,or Celtic warrior spirit to be precise.

Yer zombie club only have the two,or three Scottish players in their squad and wee munchkin McCausland.
It’s doubtful that any of them will be in their starting line up.

Liam Kelly possibly replace Bombscare Butland, however can’t see the Belgian Waffle dropping their goalie.
