It’s gotta be up there

My partner in crime suggested a year gone past review on this obvious date, and it’s a challenge I gladly accepted. Not only is it a pleasure to share this blog with yourselves and it’s co-owner, but it was a real pleasure to follow and cover our beloved Glasgow Celtic throughout the entirety of 2024.

On the first day of ‘25 it’s hard to gauge what the full impact of the last year shall be. There’s no doubt levels were raised, and I mean right across the board. Future Tims may well look back and point out ‘24 as the year the modern Celtic began, akin to us modern Tims pointing at Fergus and ‘94.
2024 as a whole now comes across as a changing of the guard, a different mindset being established, new goals and targets being embraced. As benchmarks go, it’s gotta be up there.

Starting at the top, the boardroom adapted, supposedly a reaction to over celebration in an Ibrox boardroom years ago when the clubs real shotcaller decided on revenge for the lack of respect on the day plus sins of the past. Regardless if true or false, it’s a fact some of our representatives went on to help create FFP/FSR which helped lead into this period of sustained success. For myself, the past year was transformative in that it delivered harmony between football operations and the profit driven controlling PLC. I cannot recall major ranting against the board, and I type that with much pleasure. The board seemed to finally grasp the seemingly simple fact that the better the team the better the accounts, and much needed change transpired. Not only was the wage structure altered, but the player budget increased to the extent that the club broke their own transfer fee record not once but twice. A smart investor goes where the money is, and for Celtic it was the revamped Champions League.
But to get there you must win the league, and that takes us to the turn of last year and five prophetic words left ringing in our ears.
‘I’ll see you in May!’

With those words the gauntlet was properly thrown down, Celtic wanted the title and would fight for it. Didn’t they just!
Brendan had several battles on his hands at the time,,one with the then transfer committee, a couple in domestic football, and perhaps more importantly with a section of the fans who either didn’t appreciate his return and/or his style of football after the ‘death by attack’ Ange. Those five words were not just a warning to the Ibrox mob, they were also a blast at his detractors who were quickly silenced by what unfolded.

The opening 5 months of 2024 delivered the new Brodge-ball, viewed widely as progress on Ange-ball as it offered an explosive attack alongside some defensive solidity. The gaffer mostly leant on Ange signings, the new chaps disregarded, but had notably transformed Liam Scales into a genuine first team player. Many others improved like Daizen, Callum, James, but the icing on the cake last January was a certain striker. And a certain winger, but we wouldn’t discover that until later in the year. January delivered in a big way.

The following 4 months were a joy to behold as Brendan got the best out of the bunch in every sense, bar Kuhn but we later discovered the reason and it was not football related so the gaffer cannot be held responsible.

The relentless march towards the title, the double winning Cup Final, the swagger and universal acceptance that Brendan knew what he was doing afterall,,,the foreign tour, the dismissal of Lawell Jnr, all the above lead to a summer of anticipation on many fronts.
Will he walk again?
Who’s buying the players?
Who’s getting sold?
Can we compete in Europe?

Within weeks of lifting the doing the double, our best player had predictably joined the EPL for 25 million and the Bhoys were together again back on tour in far flung places against world famous opposition.
We beat them all, and a certain German winger started emerging as a true player.

The Champions League draw was kindly for once, and the transfer window slammed shut with most Tims delighted at the recruitment given big money was spent on good potential with two of them having already proven that the Hoops aren’t too heavy a burden to wear. As a new campaign gets underway a very adventurous 11 million pound young Belgian recruit felt like a true statement of intent and by mid September everything looked rosey at Parkhead.
We’d just dispatched the Hibs and The R2ngers, first game of the new Champions League arrives and it’s at home. We hit the Slovakians for 5, same for Falkirk, before doing St Johnstone for 6. Celtic headed to Germany with everybody confident we could hold our own these days.
Dortmund stuffed us, scoring 7 to our 1.

Logic dictates that lessons were learned on that day, subsequent ability to fend off a European opponent such as Brugge, Atalanta, Zagreb only reinforces that viewpoint, but the result in Germany was certainly the low point in what has been an excellent campaign overall given qualification to the knockouts is not only possible but probable from my viewpoint. We’ve improved our coefficient, established ourselves as no ‘gimme’, learnt our lessons and taken them onboard.

The final quarter of the year saw a Celtic side that whilst not in top gear either grinds out the win or goes unbeaten, qualities that have now infected this group and have been lacking since Martin’s formidable European finalists.

2024 saw Celtic play well, buy well, and to be honest behave well. I’m struggling to think of one negative, and I cannot recall typing that before.
As twelve months of being a Tim goes, it’s gotta be up there with the best.
Roll on ‘25.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were

Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

Once again, the donations page has been set up for us by CHALMERSBHOY, and my grateful thanks to him for doing this and so much more.

Happy New Year Mahe.

Thanks for all that you do throughout the year. Hopefully the family are well both in the US and Béal Feirste.

Anyway.

Not forgetting too that it was the hard earned reputation for financial sustainability that saw key executives at Celtic play a vital part in the reframing of the financial sustainability rules (FSR) via the European Clubs Association.

That influence at the ECA also helped develop the new CL format and the much improved financial distribution model.

Scotland’s other clubs were to benefit hugely via the revamped Solidarity Payments.

Restraint during the previous CL format put us in a virtually unique position and able to back the Manager.

A masterclass of football governance against a backdrop of debt and leveraged buyouts.

It was the clubs that demanded the development of FSR. They came to the conclusion that limits needed to be imposed on spending.

Celtic have been operating in that fashion for years, in a largely insolvent domestic league, where our main rival spent their way out of existence.

Auldheid,

Thanks for the response. Happy New Year. I’ll post a reply later.

Pitymelvin,

Morning & a Happy New Year!

I enjoyed your post yesterday evening. You make many valid points. The following sentence caught my attention.

“Celtic made sure the rangers and their great history was never in jeopardy.”

Dec 31st @ 6.08pm.

Nothing personal mate.

But who told you this?

Where is the reference/evidence?

“In 2013, we (Celtic) expressed surprise – shared by many observers and supporters of the game – over the findings of the SPL Commission (LNS) that no competitive or sporting advantage had resulted.

“Today’s decision (Supreme Court) only re-affirms that view. We are sure now that the footballing authorities in Scotland will wish to review this matter. Celtic awaits the outcome of their review.”

There was never going to be justice in Scotland.

Thankfully, Celtic’s hard earned reputation in Europe enabled us to ‘go around’ the entrenched Scottish corruption and play a pivotal role in the shaping of the current version of FSR.

We had the foresight to play the long game.

Enjoy the good times and have a great day.

There are some naysayers in Celtic cyberspace, who just can’t bring themselves to give the club a break.

Celtic’s current dominance is a much needed break from the ongoing tragedy in many parts of the world.

PMSL when I read about Clement insisting that he had rested players for the jaw-dropping points-dropping visits to Paisley and Motherwell on the advice of his sports science specialists. Keep them fresh for the big one against Celtic, after all these two games are six easy points!

Even more so when BR said that he too listens to the advice of his sports science team, but makes his own decisions! A stiletto straight between the shoulder blades!!!

So you can imagine my delight when Clement hastily backtracked on his folly of throwing others under the bus by telling everyone that it was he,Clement, who had screwed up. His decision all along, honest guv.

He’s not just out of his depth now. He’s out of his mind.

BMCUWPS,

Whatever Clement is he’s on a contract until 2028 at at least £50k a week.

The Jacobite, Patrick Stewart has a tough job on his hands as a result of shocking financial results at Ibrox.

“Rangers chiefs Fraser Thornton and Patrick Stewart will be looking to reduce the club’s wage bill following the well-documented financial struggles at Ibrox, sources have told Football Insider.

Thornton, who is a chartered accountant with experience working in the drinks industry, has taken on the role of chairman following John Bennett’s departure in September.”

https://www.footballinsider247.com/rangers-launching-january-firesale-as-cost-cutting-begins-keith-wyness/

Hard to believe with that CV. It’s also not insignificant that no high paying EPL club snapped him up given his background.

There’s more skeletons than a Haunted House at Old Trafford.

Sevco’s biggest hope is that we commit ourselves to spending dependant on the financial rewards of CL participation.

Nothing really changes.

Enjoy your day.

Regards to the family.

Ernie,

How can a Democratic President spend billions of US Tax Dollars on weapons to commit genocide in Gaza? That’s not just absurd but a whole lot more.

Rangers/Sevco the football authorities have undermined any notion of credibility that may have existed.

As for the Scottish Office and the Scottish Government?

Thanks to Bobby and Mahe for the best site on the entire Timternet.

That was an excellent summary of ’24 Mahe! Let’s hope the club give you the opportunity of doing a similar review in 12 months time.

Looking ahead to tomorrow I’ve no concerns about the huns on the pitch but I am concerned about the possibility of huns encroaching onto the pitch if things get very toxic ie we go 2 up before HT.

I understand they’ve been granted a drinks license for tomorrow to sell beer to the masses outside the stadium. What could possibly go wrong??

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL CELTS

A very good article, and highlights how our club continued to move forward throughout the whole of last.
It wasn’t gained as been classed as straightforward either, and who cares if the domestic treble was achieved back to front, but it’s still the only way to achieve a domestic treble in a calendar year?

At the centre of the progression, has been Rodgers himself?
Question marks at the start of last year to hero status by the end of the year.
Personally believe that where we find ourselves as a club now, is the vision Rodgers had first time around, where the board under lawwell control, thought keeping the scum in business would be a better way forward?
Debatable as to whether the right decision was taken at the time, for what we currently have in place now for ourselves?
Yet could never totally trust this board, as principal says, such a decision should never have been allowed to even be considered in the first place imo?

Regardless, always believe that the start of a new year is a time to look forward, even if reflection upon the last year is a one, with a huge sence of pride involved for our supporters.

So still remain wary of this board, especially with the amount of success, Rodgers is capable of bringing to our club this year?
Will be 2 very interesting transfer markets to contend with, to see if Rodgers and the board will remain on the same page?
With a “Proper 55” league title almost already in the bag, attention will be upon the magical 56?
As the scum continues to become less relevant in each passing year, our attention should be upon the CL campaign now?
Great strides taken forward in that regards last year, but still improvements can be made still?
So exciting times hopefully lie ahead for ourselves still?

Yet as we remain Celtic, we should still pass a thought to the less fortunate for the year ahead so,
FTH still remains very much in place, and our board best never forget either?

Lots of valid points in your posts.

I could possibly have written them myself.

I think I might have.

On the Celtic challenge to Rangers use of ebts there is lots of documentary evidence Celtic sought SFA and UEFA investigation from May 2012 to look into the the matter.

I suspect UEFA wanted the lid kept on but there is no evidence of UEFA reply to May 2012 letter to make it more than a suspicion. That letter was part of a chain SFA and Celtic agreed to publish.

Had Celtic objected to Rangers retention of their misbegotten titles I think history would be different but I also think that was a deal breaker for Green the only bidder in town.

Somewhere in the documents pile is a side letter to Green from Doncaster in respect of no sanctions Sevco might face for breaches of rules by Rangers that leads me to that conclusion.

PL was aware of the need to curtail Rangers reckless spending as far back as 2010/11 and I agree that in absence of an appetite to provide domestic regulations that UEFA was the way to go as the financial recklessness of Rangers was not confined to Scotland.

I can say PL was aware as he noted the contents of this article on SFA reform originally published in Celtic Underground when it was sent to him.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/0B62m3ggkEX2RN2ZYaUxzeGwxWkU/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=107947982974245186134&resourcekey=0-24wsH7Vnd-zq0WePX2jGQw&rtpof=true&sd=true that includes a suggestion to introduce controls.

Unfortunately in a football context, there’s only one show in town. As far as the Scottish establishment are concerned. Thankfully gross overspending by football clubs was/is so widespread that there was an appetite for reform.

They’ll need to be watched though.

Scottish history is full of deception and deceit.

The comic belief that Liquidation was simply a paper exercise for the Big Hoose will be added to the long list of national embarrassments. It will always be thrown at them.

====
That wasn’t foresight it was a no brainer.

If you look back to the AGM of 2020 you will find a statement reached after agreement between shareholders representatives and then Comp Sec whereby Celtic under took to engage with football authorities to resolve the 2011 Licence issue which was addressed in a tightening of the overdue payables FFP version.

It is not stretching the imagination beyond breaking point, especially as Celtic themselves declared involvement of development of FSR, to state that the limitation of spend on players was something that was most definitely in Celtic”s best interest to pursue.

Moving up to date The SG have set up a series of round table meetings with stakeholders in Scottish football that includes supporters.

Reform of Scottish football does not seem to be high amongst the Celtic support but if there are fears of what might emerge, the logical thing to do for Celtic supporters with fears is to take part in the meetings so their concerns can be heard, not stay outside and dismiss attempts at improving our game on unfounded fears of those taking part.

The benefit of the UEFA solidarity payment is an example of Celtic”s contribution to the wider welfare of Scottish football.

The increase being something participating clubs including Celtic understood the need for.

I never had dealings with Peter Latchford.

Had a few with Peter Lawwell and Michael Nicholson one of which produced that AGM statement.

I have a reasonably good knowledge of what took place gathered over the years since 2010 about the interdependent football industry that Celtic ply their business in.

I posted a link to a UEFA site that confirmed why football is a unique interdependent industry.

If that is taken into account then whilst folk will still think Celtic got it wrong they will have a better understanding of why.

BMCUWPS,

Are you suggesting that the Celtic Board, a number of coaches and possibly senior players colluded to present Rangers with titles during those years?

How else could Titles be handed to Rangers without the knowledge and assistance of senior employees?

Is there any reliable evidence of this?

Why would Celtic spend £10m net in 2008? WGS left and took a number of senior players with him.

A further £4m net the following year.

Rangers were forced further into the mire financially and Lloyd’s pulled the plug.

Celtic emerged from the Great Recession in a remarkable financial position. Rangers/Sevco have been in a ditch ever since.

Auldheid,

Even if I believed that politicians might offer football anything.

The notion that the SG or establishment is the way to go is farcical.

From the Stratclyde Police, the Prosecution Service. Motions in the Scottish Parliament commending Rangers on 150 years. The bias during Covid. GCC.

Sevco are their Club.

Reform Scottish football via FSR. Are clubs sustainable?
Reduce costs. Sell tickets to supporters who want to attend games.

Close, merge clubs that are not sustainable.

Look at leagues like Belgium.

Reform the amateur game.

Attract investors.

Celtic achieved financial justice by going around them despite the efforts of Scottish politicians and civil servants.

There’s a lesson there.

You made lots of great points in your earlier post but one thing I don’t get (and this is not aimed at you but is a general question.)

“So still remain wary of this board, especially with the amount of success, Rodgers is capable of bringing to our club this year”

If as is evident success brings financial rewards that help Celtic grow that help share value and dividends grow that provide personal benefit to Board members why would that Board want to undermine BR?

I have a different take which is that with new CL format the Board or DD realised Europe is where Celtic can significantly grow financially and the guy to take them in that direction is BR.

He was only persuaded to return because of a change in Board thinking that removed his reasons for leaving previously.

It is a long term task hence rumours of extension that a Board trying to undermine him would not offer.

I’m not saying stop being wary of trusting the Board I am saying the default position should not be they are not to be trusted.

The change is an evolutionary one and transfers windows are only one indicator of where Celtic are heading and if all the Board care about is lining their pockets then BR is the man to do the job.

We’ll see. 😉

The SG are not dictating the direction of the Round Table Meetings.

Politicians in the SG are also supporters of football clubs including Celtic.

Those guys are enabling a dialogue to take place not dictating any outcome.

The SG was persuaded to instigate the Round Table process by football supporters of many clubs who happen to be politicians.

The SFSA covers supporters of all clubs and they worked with those politicians to bring the SFA to the table to argue Scottish football governance is doing a fine job

It’s taking a long time to even get this far but who would argue here that SFA are doing a fine job?

Celtic are well aware of events in Westminster following the Tracey Crouch review that could lead to a relevant and appropriate oversight in Scotland.

Like an independent audit of UEFA licenses the SFA grant for example.

That would be a chicken in the hen house.
