It’s gotta be up there

My partner in crime suggested a year gone past review on this obvious date, and it’s a challenge I gladly accepted. Not only is it a pleasure to share this blog with yourselves and it’s co-owner, but it was a real pleasure to follow and cover our beloved Glasgow Celtic throughout the entirety of 2024.

On the first day of ‘25 it’s hard to gauge what the full impact of the last year shall be. There’s no doubt levels were raised, and I mean right across the board. Future Tims may well look back and point out ‘24 as the year the modern Celtic began, akin to us modern Tims pointing at Fergus and ‘94.
2024 as a whole now comes across as a changing of the guard, a different mindset being established, new goals and targets being embraced. As benchmarks go, it’s gotta be up there.

Starting at the top, the boardroom adapted, supposedly a reaction to over celebration in an Ibrox boardroom years ago when the clubs real shotcaller decided on revenge for the lack of respect on the day plus sins of the past. Regardless if true or false, it’s a fact some of our representatives went on to help create FFP/FSR which helped lead into this period of sustained success. For myself, the past year was transformative in that it delivered harmony between football operations and the profit driven controlling PLC. I cannot recall major ranting against the board, and I type that with much pleasure. The board seemed to finally grasp the seemingly simple fact that the better the team the better the accounts, and much needed change transpired. Not only was the wage structure altered, but the player budget increased to the extent that the club broke their own transfer fee record not once but twice. A smart investor goes where the money is, and for Celtic it was the revamped Champions League.
But to get there you must win the league, and that takes us to the turn of last year and five prophetic words left ringing in our ears.
‘I’ll see you in May!’

With those words the gauntlet was properly thrown down, Celtic wanted the title and would fight for it. Didn’t they just!
Brendan had several battles on his hands at the time,,one with the then transfer committee, a couple in domestic football, and perhaps more importantly with a section of the fans who either didn’t appreciate his return and/or his style of football after the ‘death by attack’ Ange. Those five words were not just a warning to the Ibrox mob, they were also a blast at his detractors who were quickly silenced by what unfolded.

The opening 5 months of 2024 delivered the new Brodge-ball, viewed widely as progress on Ange-ball as it offered an explosive attack alongside some defensive solidity. The gaffer mostly leant on Ange signings, the new chaps disregarded, but had notably transformed Liam Scales into a genuine first team player. Many others improved like Daizen, Callum, James, but the icing on the cake last January was a certain striker. And a certain winger, but we wouldn’t discover that until later in the year. January delivered in a big way.

The following 4 months were a joy to behold as Brendan got the best out of the bunch in every sense, bar Kuhn but we later discovered the reason and it was not football related so the gaffer cannot be held responsible.

The relentless march towards the title, the double winning Cup Final, the swagger and universal acceptance that Brendan knew what he was doing afterall,,,the foreign tour, the dismissal of Lawell Jnr, all the above lead to a summer of anticipation on many fronts.
Will he walk again?
Who’s buying the players?
Who’s getting sold?
Can we compete in Europe?

Within weeks of lifting the doing the double, our best player had predictably joined the EPL for 25 million and the Bhoys were together again back on tour in far flung places against world famous opposition.
We beat them all, and a certain German winger started emerging as a true player.

The Champions League draw was kindly for once, and the transfer window slammed shut with most Tims delighted at the recruitment given big money was spent on good potential with two of them having already proven that the Hoops aren’t too heavy a burden to wear. As a new campaign gets underway a very adventurous 11 million pound young Belgian recruit felt like a true statement of intent and by mid September everything looked rosey at Parkhead.
We’d just dispatched the Hibs and The R2ngers, first game of the new Champions League arrives and it’s at home. We hit the Slovakians for 5, same for Falkirk, before doing St Johnstone for 6. Celtic headed to Germany with everybody confident we could hold our own these days.
Dortmund stuffed us, scoring 7 to our 1.

Logic dictates that lessons were learned on that day, subsequent ability to fend off a European opponent such as Brugge, Atalanta, Zagreb only reinforces that viewpoint, but the result in Germany was certainly the low point in what has been an excellent campaign overall given qualification to the knockouts is not only possible but probable from my viewpoint. We’ve improved our coefficient, established ourselves as no ‘gimme’, learnt our lessons and taken them onboard.

The final quarter of the year saw a Celtic side that whilst not in top gear either grinds out the win or goes unbeaten, qualities that have now infected this group and have been lacking since Martin’s formidable European finalists.

2024 saw Celtic play well, buy well, and to be honest behave well. I’m struggling to think of one negative, and I cannot recall typing that before.
As twelve months of being a Tim goes, it’s gotta be up there with the best.
Roll on ‘25.

First class lead article. We don’t tell you and yer partner in crime BMCUWP nearly often enough how consistently impressive your output is on all things Celtic. Hat doffed!

Tuned in on Leeds – Blackburn. Owen Beck is showing up well for Rovers at left back. Fast with impressive recovery speed and solid tackling. Don’t see Todders on the field or on the bench. I was curious to see how he performed at this standard.

I think most of us had written off our investment in Bernabei,so any fee is a bonus. An additional bonus being that we got six times what the huns picked up for offloading all those “stars” in the summer.

That alone will have them frothing at the mouth again!

An insightful contribution.

If only PL had stayed away there would understandably, given the policy post 2004 he was hired to execute, be a quicker realisation that real change was afoot.

A realisation I hoped, based on information that claimed an inside track that PL would not return and despaired of when the PL appointment was made because it muddied the waters and still does to some extent but less so as time passes.

Poor game at Leeds so far. I should have watched the West Brom game.
No fresh rumours on KDS re transfers.
It will be interesting to see if KT is on the Arsenal subs bench at Brentford today, as he has been for their last 2 games.
Sevco offload Ben Davies to Birmingham on loan.
Don’t see anything on Sevco media re Baldemort’s assistant walking out, although I could have missed it.
Butland’s emergency hospital admittance apparently for serious internal bleeding in one leg.
Interesting discussion in previous posts on Baldemort’s salary and payoff if canned. If that is all they are paying him, it severely limits who they could attract to replace him.

The Belgian Beale won’t be on anything like £2.5 million a year, not even half of that,a well connected guy there told me ,the trade off for the extra year on his contract, is that of hes bagged (Friday),his payout is 6 months salary.
————————————-
Hi Bada:
I would be surprised if these were the terms for being bagged. It it were only 6 months salary, the additional year he negotiated on his contract would afford him no extra financial security, and would be pointless. I would think the terms would be more like 50% of the remaining salary on the contract, including the additional year. Otherwise, it would be relatively cheap and easy for Sevco to can him. Pure speculation on my part, but you see my point?

Auldheid,

Celtic’s policy hasn’t changed.

Lobbying and work within the ECA and UEFA produced the changes we wanted.

1) FSR development.
2) Increased participation fees.
3) League set-up.
4) Increased Solidarity Payments.

We’ve worked towards this outcome for years.

These changes limited the excessive spending of reckless clubs. Increased finance has allowed a greater spend on wages and fees.

That’s the aim of the Board’s policy.

A masterstroke.

Without significant domestic broadcasting income, income from sales is still vital. This is where we need to balance the present opportunities with the financial realities we work in.

Look at the age profile and the profit made from player sales by other clubs competing in the CL.

Anyway,

The English Government signed off on the deals for Clearwater to acquire Chelsea and the Saudis to buy Newcastle. Not a great start.

The SFSA policy document issued prior to the debate in the Scottish Parliament failed to understand how the UEFA Solidarity Payments system works. Its authors made serious errors in the presentation of the facts to the Parliament in relation to the 5WA.

I highlighted these to you. Hopefully they have been resolved.

The SG and it’s minions are no friends of Celtic. The OBAF, kettling of supporters, actions during Covid. Failure to investigate serious financial impropriety at Ibrox. Miscarriages of Justice. Compensation to victims of the Scottish legal system..

You’d be better off going to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

By going around these people the directors of Celtic past and present played a blinder.

Have a great night…

TMG

Ever heard the expression “teaching yer granny to suck eggs”?

When you say “we” who is “we”?

I’ve been on the case since 2010 and have met some of the “we” and one consequence of meeting “we” has been to provide “we” with more than enough evidence to tell UEFA Scottish football needs reform.

I did that as a representative of shareholders ( not an ego trip) who wanted a change to the “honest mistakes” environment Celtic had to operate under. They were disappointed the original 2011 issue was not addressed but satisfied every effort had been made to address their concerns by the requisitioners representing them.

One of the aspects of the case Celtic made for investigations was that of “lessons learning” and FSR is in many ways a reflection of lessons learned so in that respect shareholders had contributed to lessons being learned via FSR.

SFSA might not have mentioned Solidarity Payments in their review which was a reflection of what football supporters told them, so chances are Solidarity Payments was not high on supporters agenda, but I know personally that SFSA knew that solidarity payments was one way of helping other clubs develop their own player.

At the time I thought it not enough and could see supporter resistance to the idea of clubs contributing directly towards that purpose, but was delighted to see UEFA found a way to use the increased income they expected to accumulate from the format changes they proposed to CL to provide solidarity payments for development purposes that is more fitting to meet that end.

The the aim of the Board policy now is clearly not the policy executed by PL so I would call that a change.

You are correct that the 5WA and its impact was not used but it wasn’t a result of my trying to make it so, the SFSA had to appeal to supporters across the football scenery and did not want to lose support from a large group, ironically now crying out for reform.

It was a tactical decision that I could not argue against taking the bigger picture into account.

You highlighted nothing to me that I did not already know but had to accept the approach for the reasons given. You have no idea the effort I made to get 2012 stuff on the agenda.

However by not focusing on it the SFSA got the SG involved and have got stakeholders around the table, sometimes we have to lose a battle to win a war.

In your defence how would you know granny was already sucking eggs on the ground although I was posting about the changes MAHE mentioned in the 2024 transfer window discussions that I believe has taken place because it makes the Board more MONEY than the one PL followed. That change was enabled by the work done by The Board that you mention. It just took time.

There are MSP in the SG who want the SFA brought to account, the idea that everyone in the SG is against Celtic is just not the case. In fact it was an MSP at the debate raised by a fellow MSP on enhancing Scottish football who stopped the SG Minister from kicking any further action down the road until the Westminster legislation had completed and got her agreement on ongoing discussions with all stakeholder paetites instead.

If we start from that position that everyone is against us progress would be impossible , if that idea were true there would be no Good Friday Agreement.

Find the common good for both sides and take it from there.
