It’s gotta be up there

My partner in crime suggested a year gone past review on this obvious date, and it’s a challenge I gladly accepted. Not only is it a pleasure to share this blog with yourselves and it’s co-owner, but it was a real pleasure to follow and cover our beloved Glasgow Celtic throughout the entirety of 2024.

On the first day of ‘25 it’s hard to gauge what the full impact of the last year shall be. There’s no doubt levels were raised, and I mean right across the board. Future Tims may well look back and point out ‘24 as the year the modern Celtic began, akin to us modern Tims pointing at Fergus and ‘94.
2024 as a whole now comes across as a changing of the guard, a different mindset being established, new goals and targets being embraced. As benchmarks go, it’s gotta be up there.

Starting at the top, the boardroom adapted, supposedly a reaction to over celebration in an Ibrox boardroom years ago when the clubs real shotcaller decided on revenge for the lack of respect on the day plus sins of the past. Regardless if true or false, it’s a fact some of our representatives went on to help create FFP/FSR which helped lead into this period of sustained success. For myself, the past year was transformative in that it delivered harmony between football operations and the profit driven controlling PLC. I cannot recall major ranting against the board, and I type that with much pleasure. The board seemed to finally grasp the seemingly simple fact that the better the team the better the accounts, and much needed change transpired. Not only was the wage structure altered, but the player budget increased to the extent that the club broke their own transfer fee record not once but twice. A smart investor goes where the money is, and for Celtic it was the revamped Champions League.
But to get there you must win the league, and that takes us to the turn of last year and five prophetic words left ringing in our ears.
‘I’ll see you in May!’

With those words the gauntlet was properly thrown down, Celtic wanted the title and would fight for it. Didn’t they just!
Brendan had several battles on his hands at the time,,one with the then transfer committee, a couple in domestic football, and perhaps more importantly with a section of the fans who either didn’t appreciate his return and/or his style of football after the ‘death by attack’ Ange. Those five words were not just a warning to the Ibrox mob, they were also a blast at his detractors who were quickly silenced by what unfolded.

The opening 5 months of 2024 delivered the new Brodge-ball, viewed widely as progress on Ange-ball as it offered an explosive attack alongside some defensive solidity. The gaffer mostly leant on Ange signings, the new chaps disregarded, but had notably transformed Liam Scales into a genuine first team player. Many others improved like Daizen, Callum, James, but the icing on the cake last January was a certain striker. And a certain winger, but we wouldn’t discover that until later in the year. January delivered in a big way.

The following 4 months were a joy to behold as Brendan got the best out of the bunch in every sense, bar Kuhn but we later discovered the reason and it was not football related so the gaffer cannot be held responsible.

The relentless march towards the title, the double winning Cup Final, the swagger and universal acceptance that Brendan knew what he was doing afterall,,,the foreign tour, the dismissal of Lawell Jnr, all the above lead to a summer of anticipation on many fronts.
Will he walk again?
Who’s buying the players?
Who’s getting sold?
Can we compete in Europe?

Within weeks of lifting the doing the double, our best player had predictably joined the EPL for 25 million and the Bhoys were together again back on tour in far flung places against world famous opposition.
We beat them all, and a certain German winger started emerging as a true player.

The Champions League draw was kindly for once, and the transfer window slammed shut with most Tims delighted at the recruitment given big money was spent on good potential with two of them having already proven that the Hoops aren’t too heavy a burden to wear. As a new campaign gets underway a very adventurous 11 million pound young Belgian recruit felt like a true statement of intent and by mid September everything looked rosey at Parkhead.
We’d just dispatched the Hibs and The R2ngers, first game of the new Champions League arrives and it’s at home. We hit the Slovakians for 5, same for Falkirk, before doing St Johnstone for 6. Celtic headed to Germany with everybody confident we could hold our own these days.
Dortmund stuffed us, scoring 7 to our 1.

Logic dictates that lessons were learned on that day, subsequent ability to fend off a European opponent such as Brugge, Atalanta, Zagreb only reinforces that viewpoint, but the result in Germany was certainly the low point in what has been an excellent campaign overall given qualification to the knockouts is not only possible but probable from my viewpoint. We’ve improved our coefficient, established ourselves as no ‘gimme’, learnt our lessons and taken them onboard.

The final quarter of the year saw a Celtic side that whilst not in top gear either grinds out the win or goes unbeaten, qualities that have now infected this group and have been lacking since Martin’s formidable European finalists.

2024 saw Celtic play well, buy well, and to be honest behave well. I’m struggling to think of one negative, and I cannot recall typing that before.
As twelve months of being a Tim goes, it’s gotta be up there with the best.
Roll on ‘25.

Been watching/listening to a good wee lot of Celtic podcasts recently.
Also watching some zombie podcasts, for a laugh.
Quality content always, it’s just very time consuming.
Average day, waking hours would probably average about 4-5 hours on Celtic related matters.

That resonated with me. One of my New Year Resolutions is to do less sitting around watching fitba’ matches and reading blogs. I love it, but it is not good for yer ticker, especially as you get older. It’s a bit like fighting an addiction, which I have never been good at, throughout life.

EBT Arteta has 2 subs on the bench that he has consistently played ahead of KT. They are Zinchenko and Kiwior, so KT’s chances of getting a run are slim.
And would you believe it? Arteta replaces left back Calafiori with newbie Lewis-Skelly!

Sorry, mate. But you are getting confused with net spend and what it was spent on. Common enough attempt at explaining the events of the time I mentioned and the actions of Lawwell at the time.

A net spend of £10m,which I’ll have to take your word on,means eff all when it is all pissed up against a wall. Or might as well have been, since it was all wasted on projects, few of which ever succeeded. So,yes,I’ll stick by my point that the club facilitated the Champions League money for the huns for three seasons by gifting them the title.

No doubt Celtic watching this closely as we’re heavily affected by cross -border raids on our young prospects ( post Brexit)and poor FIFA legislation.

I thought the idea of Celtic playing “after you Rangers ” too preposterous to accept.

Then I come across the unique interdependency of football philosophy that allows football in Europe to avoid laws that other industries have to comply with and makes club dependent on each other and then the Peter Lawwell Martin Bain draft of Feb 2011 making a case for both clubs to join the EPL a year before Rangesr go bust and a month before Rangers were presented with a UEFA licence under false pretence, that bar for Malmo and Maribor would have kept the wolves from the door, and I’m no longer as sure that the titles lost from 2009 helped by failure to sign Steven Fletcher was not contrived.

Rangers debt had risen from £6M to £36m to fund the purchase of players to then win 3iar titles generating enough income to reduce their debt to £18m.

Taking all of that into account, whilst not arguing that PL did help to keep Rangers going I no longer find the idea as preposterous as I initially though.

Sorry lads, the Board delivered sustainable football in the poisonous arena of Scottish football.

Reform of governance by UEFA, re- structure of their competitions. Improved prize money. Improved Solidarity Payments.

A transformation of European football. Celtic’s executives were and are at the centre of the ECA throughout.

Sevco a wreck of a club.

A great way to start 2025.

Credit where credit is due.

Careful execution of executive policy has presented Brendan with a fantastic opportunity.

All achieved despite the establishment bias against Celtic that permeates Scottish society.

Auldheid,

The reference to the 5WA was the SFSA link of the agreement to the compensation payments for the Miscarriages of Justice, by the Scottish establishment.

This pointed out to you a couple of times. Embarrassing stuff.

The big error was the assertion that, “the ends justifies the means.” Dangerous territory.

2008 etc.

I’ve spent a good deal of time looking at those years.

Please provide verifiable evidence of any wrongdoing.

Anyway,

Over to Brendan and the bhoys tomorrow.

What you don’t seem to get is I’ve already posted to the benefits of FSR and Celtic role in it.

I’ve explained how FSR hobbles R2ngers and I know that the only way to get it was through UEFA.

I know because that is what Celtic undertook to do in the agreed response to a shareholder resolution to 202O AGM.

That statement provided what I negotiated for which basically was Celtic undertook to engage with football governing authorities after SFA decided not to complete their own Judicial Panel Disciplinary Panel process.

There was no timescale or how that would be done but I trusted it would be and given what Celtic had and what UEFA knew about regarding SFA and Rangers as result of unpeeling the onion from 2013 it was the only way to go and I was delighted to see their involvement in FSR, so although you do not seem to know it, you are preaching to the converted in respect of myself.

The Christmas Message of 2022 where legal cost funded by shareholders since 2013 was directed to the Foundation with shareholders consent AFTER MN started that ball rolling, suggests to me Celtic made an attempt to do the right thing

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GhOeaaZrFeR1pXFDTOFYYMrmRFqX7gvL/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=107947982974245186134&rtpof=true&sd=true

You also seem to have missed that I agreed with you that SFSA did not use the 5WA as I had persistently argued for but have given reasons and if you think the end of bringing the SFA to the table to defend their case is not hunkydory just because you tar the SFSA as something they are not and that end is not justified because of your mistaken perception of them I suggest that to be more dangerous in terms of making progress.

You simply have got me all wrong. If I wanted to diminish what Celtic have done I could do so but won’t because it would not be in Celtic’s wider interest.

You have not answered who ” we” is but that Xmas statement by Celtic does not suggest any ongoing antipathy on my part.

If you have any connection to “we” which I no longer have after bringing MN’s reimbursement suggestion, that he took from the Resolution he had to object to in 2020, to fruition at end of 2022 then I suggest you check with him or previous Company Secretary to get their view.

See both TavPen and Butland will miss tomorrow’s game through injury.

Not good news for us because anything would be an upgrade from those two useless tunts.

They could play a toaster at right back and a box of cornflakes in goals and their starting eleven automatically improves.

KT was last to leave the subs bench after Arsenal’s comprehensive win at Brentford. He watched an 18 year old go on as a sub after first choice Calafiori came off after 75 minutes.
It is obvious that EBT Arteta is never going to play him in the EPL. There are now 4 current Arsenal players that Arteta has played at left back before KT, even when he is fit.
The lad looked disconsolate. I really wonder what is in his future.

This a link to the SFSA/Scottish Football Alliance Review of Scottish Football.

sfa-fan-led-review-2023-06-WEB.pdf

Can you point out from the range of recommendations mentioned which one you spotted in respect of 5WA in order to justify ignoring all the other recommendations made or do you disagree with all of them?

What I did spot was a reference to UEFA solidarity payments before UEFA increased them.

“In addition to the income streams identified in Section One, the largest “skew” factor at senior professional level is the distribution of UEFA Champions League participation money. A successful Scottish club is talking about an extra £40m plus per annum, which not only creates a gulf between the top clubs and the rest, but also creates the temptation to gamble to get Champions League cash. If the gamble fails so can the club, as happened in 2012. UEFA do provide a solidarity payment to the SFA for distribution to the other SPFL cubs (around £4m). But by increasing the latter so that it is spent making other clubs more financially secure, perhaps setting resources aside some for a future Covid event, and reducing the prize money to the winner by a commensurate amount, then the moral hazard caused by a ‘win or bust’ gamble all but disappears.”

I could almost have drafted it myself. I think I might have done.

Do you disagree with the principle that Celtic along with other clubs under UEFA umbrella have accepted?

Remember it was written before UEFA found a way to increase solidarity money without it coming directly from other clubs prize money.

Clever people, I wouldn’t be surprised if Celtic were involved in that development also to protect the sustainability of the SPFL and fellow clubs based on the interdependence factor that applies to football as an industry.

Welcome to 2025. You will take a bit of getting used to 😜

Like everyone, I have hopes for the new year.

For the blog, I hope for greater tolerance of diverse views. Above all, I hope for greater self awareness for us all.

Not only but specifically, I hope for less exaggeration in the role that each of us think we have played in the evolution of football governance. Surely, there is more to ego than that?

Step into the new year with a bit of humility self awareness. I am going to try!
