We’ve Had Better Days!
Morning,all.
Well, we’ve had better days. We went into that game yesterday knowing that a victory would send our opponents into meltdown. We didn’t come close to it. Knowing how our opponents would set up against us,how they would press us throughout, that they would target our captain. We did nothing to prevent their gameplan ticking along very nicely thank you for the entire game. Knowing how close they had come to beating us in the last three games away from Celtic Park, and doing nothing whatsoever to prevent them actually achieving their holy grail.
To call it a shocking display doesn’t even come close to how bad we were. Not kidding, there isn’t a single positive that we can take from yesterday. Not even the coin-throwing incident at the end of the game, cos that’s just huns doing as huns do. It wouldn’t matter what the scoreline was, and it probably only happened then because it was our first corner at that pocket of the ground, with Engels a standing target. Though there were a few of our players guilty of standing around at other times during the game.
All day long, we resorted to the easy and predictable pass. All day long, the opposition were primed to intercept it, moving to cut off the next out ball, swarming us at every opportunity. Barely at all did we look for the long ball over the midfield to cut them out of the play and bring in our pacy wingers to take on their makeshift defence. Mind you, those wingers with so many goals and assists between them this season were bloody awful all day. Did either of them beat their fullback once in the entire game? Or attempt to take them on the outside instead of cutting in? Ffs, Maeda was up against a left-footed right back in Yilmaz and didn’t even try that simple party trick. I mention Maeda not to single him out, but as an example of what went wrong. And in truth, it all went wrong. All day.
Ach, I could go on. I won’t. You all watched it, and I’d only be prolonging the agony for you all by refreshing your memories. But our players and manager have to learn from this that there is no room for complacency. Not in these games, not ever. Not even with a fourteen point lead, now reduced to eleven. Some of us are old enough to remember leads of that size and more being thrown away in the past, and I’d rather not go through that again.
We move on to Sunday, a home match against St Mirren. While I want us to learn from today’s very hard lesson, we can’t afford to dwell on it or to let it define and destroy our season and all the good work we’ve put in up until now. Let’s get our side back on track, back on song. The hard work starts now, hot on the heels of an outstanding 2024. There’s a treble up for grabs along with continued participation in Europe. A lot to be happy about and a lot to be hopeful for, and we need to remember that. We are feeling the pain at the moment, but we have a helluva lot to be happy about!

In addition to the nominated treble (see above) there is also a weekly 6-team acca. Each of us is looking for a nailed on certainty, but there’s no such thing! But we only make one selection each, and all we ask is…
If yer daft enough to follow our advice, put a quid on each for the nominated charity as well! We are still well ahead against a level stake,so it could well be worth it.
Go on,folks. A quid? What are you waiting for?
I can give no marks to any player for yesterday’s shameful performance. I could give negative marks without a problem. So, I’m sitting this one out.
Good luck to you if you can give 5 points to any player who participated yesterday, but , for me it makes a mockery of honest scoring.
It’s easy to put it down as a bad day at the office. But that’s three times since April that the tribute act have scored 3 against us. With no lessons learned. Concern is that Young Boys now have a blueprint.
Good morning friends and regardless of yesterday’s result may I still wish a Big Happy Friday to all who post or lurk on this fine site.
H3
Hardly a bad day at the office when it happens the same way time and again. Press us high, keep us on the back foot, and if we are not 100% up for it,we fold. The huns four times in the last six. Hibs at home, though we won that one. Dortmund.
Playing the same system every time makes it very simple to plan against us. Particularly when we so rarely react during the game.
I’ve just realised what went wrong.
We are Champions League. We’re not used to playing on Thursday, they are.
Hoop Hoop Hooray
In just over a calendar year the tribute act have scored 12 goals against us and indeed, breached our defence on many more occasions in that time. Clement certainly has BRs number.
However, yesterday was yet another in a long line of sub par performances that we have witnessed since October. How many first halves is that now were we have failed to appear? It’s becoming a very bad habit and decent teams are able to punish us.
This constant pedestrian possession football is slowly stifling us.
Now that I have taken in the fact that we wete hammered in every aspect of yesterdays game I looked back over the last 10 years at the cesspit on a New Year Derby.
It is 9 years since we last won this fixture. Just take that in for a second. 9 long years without a win either in the last game before or first game after New Year over there. Surely that cant be a coincidence can it.
Were we expecting a win yesterday -YES. Were the media expecting us to win -yes. Were the hoardes expecting us to win – some were. So why did we play so badly.
God only knows. History repeats itself again .
Only one player got pass marks in my opinion and even he was miles behind the worst of anyone in blue.
A collective failure of epic proportions.
We have 5 games to get it sorted before the real pivot point in our season.
We cannot bring that level of performance onto the pitch on Jan 22nd.
Failure to reach the CL knockout stages could have a hugely detrimental psychological impact on the rest of our season.
Experience is needed in midfield to aid Calmac, give another option and assist the younger bhoys development. Our predictability in the engine room needs addressing.
The Bernabei funds should be used to find the right candidate. We had one that cost nothing a couple of years ago.
As a squad, Celtic are not as good as many believe us to be, and R2ngers are not as poor as we think they are. The nature of competitive sports results in outcomes like yesterday at Ibrox.
It is all on Brendan Rodgers, all of it. He got the players he wanted during the summer, but only the keeper started yesterday. I hope that Brendan had as rubbish a sleep last night as I did.
Some of the squad have run their Celtic race, Hatate immediately come to mind. And if Scales is keeping Trusty out the starting 11, then Trusty has a real problem. The lightweight and weak Valle can head back to Barca today if he wants.
This January window offers the chance to refresh the squad, not just for the remainder of this season, but with the summer CL Qualifiers in mind. Will the PLC trust the manager’s judgement on recruitment ?
Our most important game this month is the Young Boys match, and that was the case at 3pm yesterday. Nothing has changed on that front.
Most telling thing for at least second game running is that their tactics were to give the ball to our central defenders, cut off the supply lines and wait. They don’t even try to play from the back. Just lump it up to CCV and Scales. Shut down calmac and hatate and that would start their attacks.
With all our pace in our front three it defies logic that we didn’t continually go over the top.
“Amazing post, keep up the good work!”
Not even gonna read this mince

Negotiations underway for Kieran Tierney to return to Celtic from Arsenal, discussions are taking place.
27 year old fullback keen on the move, talks continue to reach full agreement.
NWSL is opening a 16th team in Denver. Cost of the franchise is $100 million. The last 2 franchise fees last year were half of that.
Craig,
Brilliant! One of the weak links in our team is the left hand side of our defence, so this would go a long way to correcting that.
I was hoping this might happen in January.
H3…why even bother to c+p it then? 🤔
H3
Neither did I.
JimDom
I would add Kyogo, to the list that need moved on.
Said it a million times now ..
We are not prepared to give our team any wiggle room now, it’s best everyone 5-0 while playing like Brazil 1982, or it’s just not acceptable to some.
The behaviour of some was not just hun-like, it was incredibly poor!
Crazy when you think that our club probably has the highest win rate in the whole of world football, but some lose their minds when we lose one game a year!!
Hard read on here when we win (By a fair margin) but don’t play great, it becomes a place to avoid it we dare have a bad game and lose.
What happened to not caring if we win, lose or draw?!
A few should have been told their behaviour was totally unacceptable yesterday.
Arsenal currently have a left sided defender who does not appear to be in Arteta’s plans. The guy is a level above KT.
Zinchenko.

I’d be surprised if anyone other than Rod McKenzie had drafted the 5 way agreement, though if the normal protocols were observed each of the signatories lawyers would have approved/revised the document before it was signed.
I’ve no doubt that somewhere in all of that back and forth someone must have pointed out (given the CMA approach that lawyers follow no matter what) the little flaw that made the whole thing nonsensical.
And we are now living with the consequences where Scottish football is systemically a land of make believe.
No doubt all involved have convinced themselves that they acted for the best. More fool them.
If we manage to sign KT, I would then turn our attention to finding a specialist defensive midfielder, who’s main role would be to break up the other team’s attacks.
I fully expect Brendan to find the answers to all our questions.
I also believe we will win this league by 20+ points, qualifying for the later stages of the champions league, and with a bit of fortune win the treble to make it an incredible season.
If all that comes to pass, yesterday won’t be given a seconds thought!
6 points from our next 2 games will probably see us back to being as far ahead as we were before KO yesterday.👍
BAD
I agree, if yesterday’s level of performance was a one off.
However, as illustrated, it’s anything but and certainly since October, our first half performances have been incredibly lacklustre and our inability to stem waves of attacks on our goals by such luminaries as Kilmarnock, Hibs and even Falkirk, leads many to suspect that our Manager is living a very charmed life for the salary he receives. He is not beyond criticism, this is not Celtic 1988 whereby in the Pravda View, dissenting voices were banished.
Now the “faithful through and through” mantra is all good and well, but it can also be used as a tool by the Board and other fans to dismiss those dissenting voices as ” entitled”. We now have many vehicles to discuss our shortcomings – this place being one of the best – and, unlike Huns,we don’t believe the hype.
Furthermore, I don’t mind defeat, it’s a competitive sport after all. However, the manner of yesterday’s defeat only heightens the concerns that many have about the ability of the players and manager to change the system or style of play. Very few fans think that the midfield is playing well. Very few believe that the left side of defence is playing well. Very few believe our strikers are performing well. These are all reasonable concerns.
Yes we’re winning most games but mostly we’re doing it by playing predictable, pedestrian, possession football. I think we were reared on a better aesthetic than that. However, maybe we have become Hun like in so much as we crave trophy after trophy and to hell with how we get them? Maybe we just want the millions of CL monies and again to hell how we get them?
JimDom
A cut above he may be but the difference being KT obviously wishes to come home and presumably is happy to absorb the cost.
Zinchenko, I’d imagine, wouldn’t look at an inferior league, nor thank us for reducing his salary to Celtic squad level.
Might have been said already.
Could be a blessing in disguise or at least a wake up call.
A big win for us would’ve given an excuse to sit back in this window.
Brendan now knows for sure he needs to up his game and needs to bring in better quality.
San Luis
I agree.
Honest opinion voiced rationally should be respected/expected.
Defeat is part of the game and we should accept that. However, the manner of yesterday’s collective meltdown is worthy of analysis.
If KT is coming back then that adds to the experience required in this squad.
Another older head in midfield would help too.
San Luis @ 11.49
I agree with you. It wasn’t so much losing as much as the total and abject manner of the defeat. All players have off days but to then try and have us believe the entire squad had an ‘off day’ is stretching it just a wee bit too far. Yesterdays performance is on Brendan imho.

=====
Glad to see some mention that R2ngers are not as poor as some supporters think they are.
12 goals against us suggests they are not that poor and yesterday suggested that man for man their poor footballers bettered our good footballers.
I don’t know if that realisation helps or not but perhaps it will set expectations to a more realistic level.
It leads to complacency amongst the support that I think players pick up.
It leads to a sense of entitlement that fuels anger when unrealistic expectations are not met that spills over on to the blog.
In life we get what we work for and R2ngers worked a lot harder than we did yesterday.
It’s almost as bad as the Dortmund result when we were horsed but we recovered from that and can do so again , but we really must find an anchor man in midfield and I think one of the reasons for the selection and failure to come to grips with the game is the absence of an anchorman in the squad and the quicker we get one the better.
San Luis…you make a decent case for the criticisms voiced on here yesterday. I’ve no issue with complaints about tactics or playing styles but the rhetoric on here was more Follow Follow than Sentinel Celts. It’s not what drew me to this blog in the first place and I’ll no be hingin’ aboot if that’s what it’s gonna be like in the future!

I know the blame game is part of football but it is a team game and the manager is part of the team.
So let’s hope their is some collective responsibility taken overall and players ask themselves why was I so poor today?
If that includes the system then collective responsibility should identify that and cause a rethink.
We needed a boot up the rear end to cause a rethink that even the supposed BR ego will have to address.

As soon as judgement is made of posters individually or a group then you can put the kettle on a dark mood change.
It’s human nature.
Just one final point on this matter of yesterday. We had, for whatever reason/ excuse, the vast majority of summer signings sitting on the bench some £27m worth of them.
Now as we approach the window, would you be surprised if the PLC asked serious questions of Brendan s recruitment nous?
San Luis,
Good post 👍
Where league titles are concerned, I tend to concentrate on who teaches the tape first, rather than how we got there. I will celebrate this title the very same as all the others, and I won’t spend a second thinking about Jan 2nd when we do.
As you say, it is competitive sport we are playing, so to expect to win every game while playing dazzling football seems a tad silly.
It’s good to be able to disagree minus the nastiness.
Losing is no excuse for some of the behaviour that took place yesterday. Like McCaff says, one of the attractions of this site was the fact we were mostly respectful to each other 👍
BAD 1054
When I was reading back after writing the article last night,I just thought I’d let things go. We were all hurting-I knew how I felt!-so best just let it out. Rightly or wrongly.
Quite often after a doing from that lot,we all say things we wouldn’t normally even think. Then we apologise and forget about it!

“No doubt all involved have convinced themselves that they acted for the best. More fool them.”
And that’s exactly why Lawwell coming back torpedoed any trust for me that things had changed. Despite evidence to the contrary. As long as he is anywhere near the club,I can’t trust the board.
Bobby,
I’m happy to support you in whatever course of action you feel is appropriate.
That would be an end to it for me buddy.
I just hope those responsible for dragging the site down appreciate your actions, and are at least man enough to put their hands up.
Be a real shame to start losing posters like McCaff & Chalmersbhoy simply because some can’t control their emotions.
post on ‘X’ by Graham Speirs………….
“I can’t be so charitable, I’m afraid, about the thousands upon thousands of Rangers fans chanting their bigoted anthems from the stands. Oh, I get it now…total Scottish media silence on the issue. I’ve lived with this for 25 years: Ssshhh, don’t mention it. The vast stands of the Ibrox support sang about Fenians, the Pope, and God knows what else from our Medieval Age”. Well said.
Any such nonsense in most modern societies would be eliminated straight away but for some reason in ‘progressive Scozia’ the Ibrox hordes get a free pass. Their banner “You’ll know us by our noise”, seemingly facilitated by the club, pretty much says it all. Our limelight-loving politicians should all be provided with hearing aids or ear wax remover.
Auldheid- the story that Riley wasn’t contactable is for the birds,he would have been of it was to increase his’ remuneration ‘
One of the main criticisms of Brendan Rodgers is his rigid adherence to possession football. The players appear almost programmed to carry this out, irrespective of the opposition or the random flow of a match. We play join the dots football. Very often sideways or back. From me to you and back to me. Rinse and repeat. Allowing the opposition plenty of time to organise their defensive structure.
Brendan was clearly stung by the reaction from the Dortmund debacle, most of the flak coming from the support itself. He delivered in Atalanta, to a certain extent, and we felt good again.
If he is the smartest guy in the room, and he probably believes that he is, then I am confident that personnel and style of football will improve as we enter the second half of the season.

Yes McKenzie would be the lead drafter and others would suggest change but here is the thing.
The purpose of the legal input ie the strategical goal had to be decided first and that would require input from SPL (where Riley was a Board member) to decide the objective, how to reach it by a legal pathway and how to counter any risks that might arise.
How better to do that than go down a route that could then be neutered by a placeman on the SFA?
There was a rule that was avoided in favour of misregistration under SFA Article 5 about clubs responsibility to other member clubs to act with utmost good faith.
There can be little doubt SFA knew Rangers had not done so as result of HMRC enquiries before 2011 so that had to be swerved as it would not have served the strategical purpose.
It was all a sham starting in Oct 2011 with end purpose of keeping a well supported interdependent member as an ongoing club in Scottish football for competition reasons.
Not all to do with Rangers being a symbol of Protestantism which they are , but the financial cost to Scottish football clubs of 50k supporters disappearing.from the scene.
The result of the direction taken in 2012 is that when results like yesterday happen the idea surfaces that it was not in Celtic’s interest to have the appearance of competition end in January.
Some explanation needs to be found for yesterday’s level of performance. Had we lost say 2 1 in a well contested game I doubt any suggestion of Celtic lieing down would surface.
I thing the Occams Razor explanation is more likely ie that we were beat by a hungrier team of footballers with something to prove to their support that they deserved to be supported and we did not have that same driver going into the game.
What took place in 2012 with its continuing toxic effect seems not to be a matter of concern to do something about. It’s just the way it now is.
Auldheid- the story that Riley wasn’t contactable is for the birds,he would have been of it was to increase his’ remuneration ‘
=/==
To clarify do you mean he was contactable and the minutes of the SPL virtual meeting to decide to appeal against LNS Decision are a lie?
Have you seen the minutes?
I have an alternative explanation for him not being contactable.
For me yesterday the real disappointment was that no one in the Celtic camp seemed to care.
We went down without even the slightest whimper.
Brendan and Kennedy whispered to each other on the bench but zero attempt at changing things was made .
Neither our captain or coach put in an appearance and there in lies the problem.
Also I have taken flak for stating my views on here and from my season ticket holding sisters for my views on BR’s system and Calmac’s positional play .
Yesterday was an extreme example of my stated opinion.
I hope coach and players do not view it as a one off and learn lessons that are needed.)
JimDom
Possession football works a treat as long as Iniesta, Xavi and Messi or others of that quality are in the team.
We don’t have them. Neither do Rangers but they do have a system that gets the ball into the other teams half as quickly as possible.
The reason that works so well for them when playing us is we provide space to charge into whereas St Mirren, Motherwell and Dundee Utd did not.
So is the answer we adopt the same tactics other teams do when playing R2ngers?
Keep our half of the park filled with sufficient number of players to make it more difficult to run through?
Do we have the players to do that?
Do we ask our full backs to stay in our half when playing R2ngers to nullify the diagonal pass R2ngers exploit well?
Add a defender like AJ into the midfield for example just for games when we play them, especially away.
Should that be plan A when facing R2ngers.
