Hail, Hail, the Champs are here
Winning a Cup isn’t an ending, for the defending Champions must attempt to retain it again, which starts tonight.
Unusually it’s an all top flight draw for this early third round clash, but it’s at home and not only that it’s a night game, a 5.30 kickoff under the famous Parkhead floodlights that have witnessed many a fantastic team. At the risk of repeating myself, there’s something special about watching football when darkness falls elsewhere, which probably has something to do with the extra couple of hours the supporters spend in the boozer, reveling in each other’s company and letting the anticipation build.
The opposition is timely and all, many including myself just don’t like Derek, and the morale boost delivered by battering another SPL team would be much larger than simply besting a Buckie Thistle or Airdrieonians for example. There’s an argument to be made that Celtic are actually in a good situation tonight,,,a win brings us into Wednesdays game confident, a loss would call for a severe reaction for Young Boys which is a much more important Cup.
I expect no such loss however, Kilmarnock as opponents or not. I like to believe anyone rocking upto Celtic Park on a Saturday night gets sent home with their tale between their legs.
One reason I’m confident is that unlike the league we must win which means playing to win and not being nonplussed, and unlike recently we have the whole team available for selection bar James, a single injury shouldn’t affect the odds.
I also shouldn’t discount the pressure to perform well and having players cement their place in the team for next weeks biggest game of the season yet, a game all will wish to be involved in. Besides, they’ve had a nice three days off, playing Tuesday rather than Wednesday/Saturday.
I’m tempted to speculate that having drawn with the lesser team in Glasgow recently, having watched Dundee take something from the game after fully going for it against the Hoops, Killie will actually go for it also, and why not? They knock us out a quarter perhaps semi final isn’t beyond the realms of possibility, plus in a one off/winner takes all game anything can happen. I hope they do attack us, it’s their last hope of silverware, it’s seemingly our Achilles heel,,,but we are deadly on the fast counter attack especially with Kuhn and Maeda ready to rock.
Given the above I do expect Hatate to start, he strikes me as almost made for Cup ties rather than a consistent performer over the long haul. He can win a game with a great pass or hard shot from distance,,if I were Brendan I would tell him if he plays well tonight he starts on Wednesday. Two good games in a row isn’t beyond him, half a dozen is.
I also expect Arne to start these next couple, it was moronic to bench the player achieving consecutive MOTM awards, the player coming into fine form after adapting, it was telling the Belgian hit the shot that earned the point last time out.
The rest pick themselves but I’ll say this now, if GT looks suspect tonight, then Liam at left back come Wednesday would be my decision.
Ideally we wrap this up by the hour mark.
Saturday night at the movies, a Saturday night show?
Sounds good to me.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.
New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

I’ve no issues with Hatate starting but , IMO, you can’t have both him and Cal beginning. It rarely works these days, it hasn’t for months, bar the odd whipping boy result. Our MF is part of the problem and needs sorting. Surely, that’s why we signed 3 new ones?
Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Matchday to all who post or lurk on this fine site.
Unlike the League Cup, very few of us regard the Scottish Cup as anything other than important. Our record is second to none and Cup Final Day is always brilliant to be involved in, to hopefully end the season on a high. Well, unless we’re in the Champions League final the following Saturday!
TV viewing for me today but perhaps this might be my last season of boycotting the SFA cup competitions.
Enjoyed the lead article Mahe but pedantic me just has to point out that today’s tie is a 4th round game 😉
It’s the great balancing act today. Who to rest, who to play and also from my point of view there are certain pairings that we cannot rest together. For example if we rest Johnston then Carter-Vickers must play and vice versa. If we rest Trusty then Valle must play. Maeda is most likely to start on the bench so all things being told I’d start with Schmeichel, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Scales, Valle, Bernardo, Engels, Hatate, Kuhn, Kyogo, Yang which probably means you can discount it from actually being the starting eleven! lol
A point on the romance of the Cup
Good luck to the Bankies today at Hibs.
Disappointing to see some posters talking Barry White over the appointment of David Pleat.
“If you don’t read the newspapers you are uninformed.
If you do read the newspapers you are misinformed “
Venete ignoramous.
Mahe, do you think that Hatate has been saving himself this last 3 months for a Scottish Cup tie , what about the league Cup., when he was rotten.
He’s been stinking for months and should be no where near the starting lineup.
Couple of big calls tonight for me. Will Valle play as hes reported to be off at month end.
Will Trusty be dropped after Brendan desttoyed him for Tuesdays display. Will Sinisalo start as managers tend to use back up keeper in cups OR will he be kept for Fraserburgh in next round.
I will be surprised if Killie finish with 11 men on the park as they seem to have a red card every few games and this is a game they want to win so being “aggresive” is certain.
Has our invisible CEO, announced the appointment of David Pleat.
Oh wait a minute, he doesn’t do talking to the fans , does he.
AULDBHOY67
Dunno why,but I like the idea of being drawn against Fraserburgh!
ST TAMS
Nicholson’s communication with the fans is abysmal. Wouldn’t hurt him to sit down and lay out his strategy and plans for the future-even if it’s only to say “More of the same.”
I think he might play trusty today. He is the only player he has hung out to dry after two post match interviews. He doesn’t single out anyone else. It’s a bit of a strange ‘management’ technique. If you were trusty how would you feel if you were picked today vs if you were dropped after being singled out.
Idah on the other hand needs to get his confidence back and that’s by introducing him when games are won rather than having him in the firing line when we are chasing
Morning all,
” Your most important match is your next one”.
Don’t know who said this quote but it’s spot on for me.
I would start with strongest team ( Brendan must have a good idea ) and try and blow Kilmarnock away That means starts for Kuhn, Kyogo and Maeda. Score a few and unless any injuries think early subs.
Hopefully this will give the players confidence for Wednesday and the fans will give full backing.
SimplesCSC 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
If the last few games are anything to go off, we might be in for an open game today, as teams might just think we are fragile at the back, and target the left side of our defence. No points to play for just the next round.
In the first 30 games of this season, the readers of these pages only voted Kyogo in the top 5 (FIVE) in 7 of those games. 3 5th places, 1 4th and 3 3rd’s. In his new role he has secured back to back Man Of The Match awards. So, despite the return to fitness of everyone (except wee Jamesie) I’d love Brendan to accommodate Kyogo but not in the lonely centre forward role.
Had we been playing lower league opposition I’d maybe have hoped for starts for Kenny and one or two other younger players. But today, I’m with Leggy – start as strong as possible and try to put the game to bed by the 70th minute. And only then, start to think about the Young Boys game.
My preferred starting XI? here goes –
Schmeichel
Johnston, CCV, Trusty, Taylor
McGregor, Engels, McCowan
Kuhn, Idah, Kyogo
With later guest appearances (injuries permitting) for Bernardo, Hatate, Kenny, Scales, Valle
My only other hope is that the game generates more interest from the voting public! Remember, first time voters are always welcome – pass it on! SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

Of course your correct with such an outlook.
Unfortunately for myself, the mindset is looking more towards the CL young boys, which I would class as our most important match in quite a number of years imo?
So today is an unwanted preparation match, which also holds huge importance as well, against a team who like to apply a thug footballing approach.
As its a cup match it has to be decided today.
So our front 3 for young boys will possibly be
Maeda kyogo kuhn
Replacement with the 5 sub rule
Palma Idah Yang
So if such an approach is used today, we need to be winning easily, as wouldn’t feel comfortable about the changes available to ourselves in the front line, to go chasing the game.
Same will possibly apply on Wednesday also.
Our midfield at present, isn’t quite as bad at present with options, but could be described as worse in functioning properly at present.
Calmac as our captain is still been used as our full 90 minutes player, despite age and game time catching up, and looking more jaded in our most pivotal position.
Thankfully, Engels is stepping up and linking up play on our far more threatening right hand side.
Paulo and McCowan are also capable of producing in that role also.
Yet the left side, functions nowhere near as effectively. Hatate remains the favourite for the role still, made all the more complicated with the Taylor inverted role.
So a triangle of Taylor, Hatate and Calmac, remains a massive weak link, with not operating to well, and opposition team targeting that area of weekness. Still believe Calmac could be the better option than Hatate, and Paulo tried in the calmac role imo?
Tried all available options except calmac in the position, which I find very strange still?
Defence still remains questionable at times also.
The main issue is the partner role for CCV.
Of course that position is made even harder now, with the Bermuda triangle in front of them also.
Scales and Trusty have both been given the same role since Starfelt left. Yet neither have secured the position since, and this despite how much our support thought of Starfelt as a player for ourselves?
So the left hand side of our defence remains an issue, and says it all when our left attacking option has to help out so much due to the frailty within it?
So overall, I am struggling to feel over confident, all the while we have become way to predictable in how we set up as a team, with our approach taken at present.
Opposition teams can apply a game plan that involves keeping the first half very tight, and becoming far more aggressive in there play within the second half, especially if they can force set plays upon ourselves.
Sorry to outline many problems that currently can exist within our team, as I see them.
The solution still remains playing with good tempo, with passing and movement, but we have to increase these moments of goal scoring opportunities, as they have been massively reduced lately.
Add in getting the basics right also, should be enough to get the victory’s required in the next 2 games, especially with ourselves at home.
With the problems that exist within our team at present, I just don’t think it will be as easy as some are thinking, and could require a fair bit of patience from our support to be achieved also imo?
Re the rumours of our winger, striker and left back targets for January:
Moro of Valladolid breaks his collarbone, Villa say they won’t sell Louie Barry this window, and the Valle, Tierney, Taylor situation still has all the balls in the air.
I do hope Celtic have a Plan B then a Plan C for the next 2 weeks, because sure as Fate, Murphy’s Law will kick in, and we may end up less a paddle, and up a certain creek.
I haven’t heard a cheep about a holding midfielder, and we have needed a good one since Broonie left. Who will be the ‘few’ faces Brendan hopes to get in?
Johnno,
Well said.

Find it strange at present, within rumours month, that midfield options haven’t been mentioned really.
As much as I agree that a proper defensive midfielder, would be a good addition to our squad, especially as there is such a role for such a player, within many games we take part in.
Add in the Hatate situation also, with him expected to be moving on during the summer.
We still haven’t got a sufficient quality player within the Hatate role at present, and highlighted even moreso with the growing inconsistent levels within Hatate own game at present, and for some time now also.
So the question still remains as to whether the Hatate role, is sufficient for the remainder of this season still, especially as no-one has stepped up to make the position and role, there own within the season to date?
With only 3 changes allowed within our CL squad, still believe that this position should be addressed, along with another wide option, whether we qualify for the knockout phase of the CL or not imo?
JOHNNO
I have to respond to the most recent scandalous, pernicious and outrageous libel of my person by His Legginess. My consiglieri will be on the case just as soon as he has finished bailing out BBRB.
You won’t glean any knowledge of moths from examining LEGGY’s wallet. They passed away long ago from lack of oxygen. This assumes you would be fortunate enough to even glimpse a sighting of that relic. Nobody has for years, leading many to believe it is either extinct, or somewhere in Fort Knox.
Good post by the way. I think McCowan, since he can’t play on Wednesday, may play most of today’s game.
I also omitted to welcome you to the site. The mandatory question must be asked.
Are you a Hun?

PS. Just read your latest post. Also a good one!
Watching Newcastle v Bournemouth and Bournemouth thought they’d scored a 3rd.
VAR intervenes and said the ball had gone out for a corner for Bournemouth earlier, fair enough.
But, as I mentioned earlier in the week during the Arsenal/Spurs game. Replay’s showed it was a clear goal kick for Spurs but a corner was given and Arsenal scored from it.
Surely VAR should have been used in this instance as well?

Hi St. Tams:
Agree 100%. Kluivert was superb, and what a strike for his hat trick! Christie also had a great game. Newcastle defence all over the place for the 4th. Bournemouth now 13 points ahead of Spurs and 11 ahead of Man U. Just shows what happens when teams shoot on sight.
Just read your last post. McCowan not registered in CL squad.

Before our defence of the trophy against Kilmarnock on Saturday, I’ll be looking after this beauty in The Jock Stein Stand concourse if anyone would like to pop in for a photo opportunity with the oldest cup in world football.
Looking forward to saying hello!!
McCowan couldn’t play in the League Cup as he’d already featured for Dundee. But eligible for Europe. I think.
Just noticed 2 things about the current background photo. 1. Almost every player is wearing black Adidas boots. 2. Ronnie Simpson is up on his tit toes to end up almost the same height as Big Billy!
Teams up…
Schmeichel, Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Taylor, McGregor, Engels, Hatate, Kuhn, Kyogo, Maeda
Subs…
Sinisalo, Scales, Idah, Valle, Yang, McCowan, Bernardo, Ralston
Arguably our strongest 10. I think Luke and Paulo are currently better than Reo.
🎶 Say hello St.Pauli..say hello to the brave! 🎶
Jobo I noticed that too, also that Jimmy Harry and Bobby’s legs are so short they can’t plant the sole of their feet on the ground while sitting, while Stevie’s legs at his shin look so thinly under developed, I often wondered if his earlier diagnosis of Tuberculous meningitis was somehow responsible.
