Hail, Hail, the Champs are here

Winning a Cup isn’t an ending, for the defending Champions must attempt to retain it again, which starts tonight.

Unusually it’s an all top flight draw for this early third round clash, but it’s at home and not only that it’s a night game, a 5.30 kickoff under the famous Parkhead floodlights that have witnessed many a fantastic team. At the risk of repeating myself, there’s something special about watching football when darkness falls elsewhere, which probably has something to do with the extra couple of hours the supporters spend in the boozer, reveling in each other’s company and letting the anticipation build.

The opposition is timely and all, many including myself just don’t like Derek, and the morale boost delivered by battering another SPL team would be much larger than simply besting a Buckie Thistle or Airdrieonians for example. There’s an argument to be made that Celtic are actually in a good situation tonight,,,a win brings us into Wednesdays game confident, a loss would call for a severe reaction for Young Boys which is a much more important Cup.
I expect no such loss however, Kilmarnock as opponents or not. I like to believe anyone rocking upto Celtic Park on a Saturday night gets sent home with their tale between their legs.

One reason I’m confident is that unlike the league we must win which means playing to win and not being nonplussed, and unlike recently we have the whole team available for selection bar James, a single injury shouldn’t affect the odds.
I also shouldn’t discount the pressure to perform well and having players cement their place in the team for next weeks biggest game of the season yet, a game all will wish to be involved in. Besides, they’ve had a nice three days off, playing Tuesday rather than Wednesday/Saturday.

I’m tempted to speculate that having drawn with the lesser team in Glasgow recently, having watched Dundee take something from the game after fully going for it against the Hoops, Killie will actually go for it also, and why not? They knock us out a quarter perhaps semi final isn’t beyond the realms of possibility, plus in a one off/winner takes all game anything can happen. I hope they do attack us, it’s their last hope of silverware, it’s seemingly our Achilles heel,,,but we are deadly on the fast counter attack especially with Kuhn and Maeda ready to rock.

Given the above I do expect Hatate to start, he strikes me as almost made for Cup ties rather than a consistent performer over the long haul. He can win a game with a great pass or hard shot from distance,,if I were Brendan I would tell him if he plays well tonight he starts on Wednesday. Two good games in a row isn’t beyond him, half a dozen is.

I also expect Arne to start these next couple, it was moronic to bench the player achieving consecutive MOTM awards, the player coming into fine form after adapting, it was telling the Belgian hit the shot that earned the point last time out.

The rest pick themselves but I’ll say this now, if GT looks suspect tonight, then Liam at left back come Wednesday would be my decision.
Ideally we wrap this up by the hour mark.
Saturday night at the movies, a Saturday night show?
Sounds good to me.

Celtic 122 shots on target = 1 goal
Opponents 2 shots on target = 1 goal.

As predictable as rain in Glasgow.

So often players pass backwards without even looking to see if they can go forward. Talent is being coached out of the players in this enslavement to boring possession play. And there you go they score and that’s all this rubbish deserves.

Can’t blame coaching for missing one on one’s.
Our finishing is shocking

We should be out of site but if that happens at the other end we don’t get that goal.

Killie player arms the ball into path of scorer.

Accidental or not if no arm used they don’t score.

Disgraceful not to have added to our tally. Shocking to cede control after forty minutes. And 1-1 is exactly what we deserve so far.

HT 1-1

Celtic yet again utterly wasteful in front of goal. Our Japanese trio should ALL be on the scoresheet by now.
If we’d went in 4 or 5 up we’d have said that this was our best performance of the season. Instead, we fanny about literally showboating at 1-0 and then lose a goal completely against the run of play!

No, it was a legal goal. There was an accidental hand ball in the build up before the ball reached the goal scorer. The player it hit had his arms tucked in, so no free kick.

AJ has hardly crossed the halfway line so pretty much all the attacks are coming from the left so it’s relatively easy to play against and Kühn might as well be sitting next to me. The tactics are garbage from a one dimensional manager. The sideways and backward stuff is horrendous. The goal came from exactly the opposite of that crap. It’s unbelievable.

This is utter garbage. McInnes changed tactics with 10 minutes to go in the half, and told his midfield to press higher.
We did not adjust, and fell right into the trap by still doing tippy happy at the back. Both Taylor and Johnston are hopeless at stopping crosses going into the box.
Now look for them doing a Dundee and going for it first 15 of the second half.
We are just so wasteful in front of goal, it drives you nuts.

Now if the game stays at 1-1 this is what I would do to address the problem – Wait until the hour mark – take off a midfielder and bring on a midfielder, then I would replace one of the wingers with another winger.

It is however vital that the system and formation remains the same, and we do not veer away from the 4-3-3.

🤷

When the ball ricocheted to the scorer, our left back was standing on the penalty spot waving his arms about. Hatate was the nearest to the scorer but didn’t react. However, Taylor needs to be reminded that his role is first and foremost left back. Had he been in position they may not have scored.

St tams
January 18, 2025 6:36 pm

Our tactics are that are that garbage that we have missed 5 one on one chances.

I’m just glad big Idah isn’t playing.
He’d be getting crucified if he had missed any of those changes

CaltonTongues
January 18, 2025 6:37 pm

Sol Kitts,

Harsh, if it hadn’t hit his arm they don’t score.

I wouldn’t be looking for a penalty if it had hit a defender like that in their box but, he knocked it into the path of the scorer. I thought VAR was supposed to be different re attacking and defensive phases?

Sol Kitts….

Appreciate the official line on the handball and I’ll begrudgingly accept it but the ball bounces differently off the hand than it does of the stomach, if the hand isn’t there then it doesn’t drop for the goal. We wouldn’t get that decision for sure.
