Sayonara And Bem-Vindo
Morning,all.
I think by now that everyone is aware of my aversion to prodigals, that “you should never go back.” Be that as it may, I can hardly be critical of stats-obsessed football commentators reeling off historical data which is of little relevance to the game we are watching if I pull the Bertie Auld rabbit out of the hat every time a possible return for a previous hero is mooted.
I groan every time I hear a commentator reel off this nonsense. Who wants to know that Melchester Rovers haven’t lost to Glasgow Gasworks United in sixty years when they have scored first after a missed penalty, or whatever nonsense they come out with. Usually greeted by a chorus of “Absholutely, that’sh for shoor and I’ll tell you shumshin elsh…” from his lobotomised jakey sidekick?
My argument in these circumstances is that each game is to be taken on its own merits, that current form may matter but stuff from sixty years ago sure as hell doesn’t.
I therefore greet the signing of Jota yesterday with loud hurrahs, cheering to the rooftops. After all, it is only around sixteen months ago that he was one of our top men, arguably the fans’ favourite-and for good reason too. He was just completing a treble-winning season to add to his double the previous year. And speaking of doubles, we could forgive him the double denim. Hell, he looked like he could carry it off, so why not?
I certainly didn’t grudge him his move to Saudi, arguing that in three years time he would be 26yo with £30m tax-free in the bank. And young enough yet to continue to make his career back at the top level. Never for a minute did I think that his time post-Celtic would turn out as it has. Never for a minute did I think we would see him back in our colours either, and certainly not so soon.
Signing a 25yo with only two decent seasons in his career to date would normally bring its own question marks. And I won’t lie to you, there has to be a concern that the months since he left will have left him struggling for confidence and even more for match fitness. We shouldn’t expect to see many MOTM performances from him in the early weeks, though with a player like Jota I reckon anything is possible.
So, welcome back. We love hunskelpers, and Jota certainly meets the mark on that score.
Speaking of hunskelpers, the downside to the deal is the departure of one. Kyogo. I’m sad to see him leave, and I wish him well. I hope the move works for him, and that he is a roaring success. And that he achieves his dream of a recall to his national team, which I believe is the main motivation for this otherwise strange move. And, of course, I stand by every word of my article on the subject a week ago. Especially the part about the terrible timing of the move.
The onus is now on our recruitment team to earn their corn by finding a replacement, and they have less than a week to do so. No pressure then! The reason for such a ludicrously short timescale is obvious-they have sat on their hands for the first four weeks of the window. Even though they were aware months ago that Kyogo wanted to leave (and that the club was happy to facilitate that) there have been no obvious attempts to get a replacement. And this time there is no Mark Lawwell around to point the finger at either.
It is entirely down to Nicholson, Rodgers and Co that we now find ourselves even shorter up front than before-and given the lack of goals so far from our striking spearhead, that is playing with fire. It’s bad enough that we head to Villa Park tomorrow night with only Idah and the untested Cummings available, but it is unthinkable that they and the equally untried Johnny Kenny will have to see us through till the end of the season.
So much for a well-run club,huh?

Bit of a bittersweet day yesterday on the transfer front.
Sad to see kyogo depart ourselves, as was a huge fan of him as a player for ourselves.
Delighted with the return of jota, as was possibly the most exciting player we have had in many a long year, and welcome his return now.
Very slight doubts regarding jota and whether he will be the player we had before?
But these have eased with knowing that Jota is returning for footballing reasons, moreso than a marketing ploy I had concerns over.
Still believe that we got the best result out of the Jota/Kyogo deals all the same.
Still believe Tierney will also return during this window.
Might have to wait until the final outcome of the CL table, and seeing if there is a chance of us facing arsenal, to what deal can be thrashed out, but remain confident that it will, even if it goes to last minute. com.
Still leaves 1 more option to be added to our CL squad.
Personally think that Maeda will be regarded as the replacement for kyogo imo?
So thinking another wide right player could be the surprise addition, and maybe a better choice of available options, than those of a striker mid season?
We still lacking a suitable backup option for kuhn, even moreso with forrest still injured at present.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Johnny Kenny loaned out for the remainder of the season either.
Still will possibly be a few spaces available within our squad, that will have to be filled during the summer window.
Especially with the likes of rocki, Palma and yang only on borrowed time at present.
Nicholson, Rodgers and Co.
Make that Lawwell, Rodgers and Co.
Daizen will play CF as Jota isn’t here to sit on the bench.
My suspicion is this will see us through til Summer when our two Japanese Bhoys move on. Then they are replaced with a new CF and creative midfielder.
BR will then have “ his” team on the pitch.
The plc hope being those transactions are cash positive, like this window.
The major spoiler on the positive spin of this window is the drawn out KT drama.
His return is expected this window to make the loss of Kyogo more palatable, and the left side as solid as it was when Daizen’s tireless energy is positioned to cover that area.
I suspect the strategy ( if there is one) is for Daizen to start centrally with Jota left, and on 60 odd minutes see Idah come central and Daizen move across as Jota plays his way back to full match fitness.
A more interesting league run-in could be in prospect than was anticipated a week or so ago.
Particularly since the Huns could have a resurgence ( 1-3 at third placed DU, after a draining Euro game) and not the hoped for self destruction.
The good news is we would appear to be in a positive cash position to date in this window – Bernabei/ Kyogo v Jota.
Just a few early morning thoughts.

—-/////—-////
Absolutely buddy
If you watch carefully, there are a bunch of folk here telling us He returned in a far less influential role.
Despite retaining the same EE number…
Then we sell our “hunskelping” hero in the week before we play a crucial CL tie with no means to replace him for that game. A game that could potentially be worth a lot more than just money…plus… millions of money
Money that will never make it into a hooped jersey btw!
Then we have folk telling us it’s better to lose that game coz the KO round draw will “actually” be more favourable…and we going to lose to Villa anyhoo… no, seriously..
The same crew saying a new Brendan type striker in by end of this window, so all is good.
Coz the track record points to this happening innit?!
Aye…rogered..Mair like!
SeS
Playing Devil’s Advocate here, our “hunskelping” hero has managed one goal in the CL and zero assists. Expecting him to perform at Villa is perhaps a stretch given his limited performance level in the previous seven.
May also explain why a lowly Rennes may have been his only transfer option. Particularly as his reducing goalscoring impact in Scotland would hardly figure in most suitors’ metrics assessment.
He also didn’t start away to Atalanta.
The likely template for our match v Villa, now obviously inhibited by Daizen’s stupid sending off.
We have seen the best of Kyogo and I wish him well.
I agree that the policy of seemingly not having a readily available replacement is shortsighted and a major mistake.
Come on its been a great window, we are still quids in.
The bank balance grows stronger, while the huns get closer.
This is exactly the formula for great bonuses to be paid out.
5 days left, 5 days from 34 days in total. And celtic apparently approach Arsenal to talk about a loan move. FFS.
It takes months to complete football deals. Give me a break.
Not too many elite clubs would be willing to take on a striker with a shoulder injury requiring surgery that will take at least 4 months to recover. Brendan told us about the surgery last August.
He also told us that Kyogo would decide when to have the operation.
Rennes need goals now and are prepared to take the risk to avoid relegation.
The prospect of Kyogo opting for surgery, or suffering a recurrence and missing the (hopefully) CL qualifiers would of been a factor in the decision making. That and Kyogo’s decision to move on.
The prospect of Kyogo breaking down or opting for surgery might also explain the numerous bids and price paid for Adam Idah. We needed cover, Adam had delivered.
This wasn’t a straightforward decision to sell, especially with the incentive of getting Jota back.
Replacing Kyogo won’t be easy, especially with our budget in a grossly inflated market. Brendan won’t be keen to have another potential blot on his copybook.
Brendan conducts monthly meetings with the recruitment team. He asks for a dozen candidates for each position. They whittle that number down to 3 or 4, before doing further analysis on each player and approaching agents/clubs.
When that’s done the Manager’s preferences are passed on to MN etc.
This is an ongoing process throughout the season.
We are then into a bidding process and waiting game.
– David Moss ex-Chief Scout.
Arsenal will decide when it’s clear, who they have at LB. They still have a lot to play for. Our current Chief Scout was previously at Arsenal.
Melchester Rovers and Glasgow Gasworks United play in different leagues but did meet once in the European Cup.
Roy Race was marked out the games by Big Jimmy and Glasgow ran out 4-0 on aggregate.
Only grainy footage remains but Jimmy himself scored from a corner soaring high above his marker to put Glasgow on easy street.
The crowd was estimated at well over 100,000.
Some of them having paid to get in.
Bobby
It never ceases to amaze me when commentators start a game with ” X are really up against it today as they haven’t beat Y since 1969!”.
WTF relevance do these stats have??
On Kyogo I still don’t know why he wouldn’t stay for the Villa game – especially with the red card to Maeda.
Re the chat above about him moving to CF. Brendan made it crystal clear in his last presser that this absolutely would not be happening. It was an ” over my dead body” response. So it bloody better not happen!
He insisted that we would need to bring another striker in. I expect young King Kenny (too soon?) to get some game time once we clinch the league on March 16.
Just Sayin’
I understand buddy- I’m thinking even when Kyogo not on scoresheet his non-stop movement is probably opening up space for others? To plan to go into this game without him just seems odd. To have no replacement in by end of window is odder…it might still happen tho’ the form book suggests unlikely.
Also, we know Idah isn’t BR first choice striker or why did he keep playing Kyogo so much? You make good point about Atalanta and utilisation of idah
Morning
First off I seem to be in a small minority who thinks accepting money from Saudi Arabia is no better than taking money from Apartheid era South Africa but I still want our returning prodigal son ( I can do cliches that McCoist would admire) to do well. We move on.
Stats can be overdone – Motson was really bad for them- stats like ‘Celtic has not beaten Aberdeen in a home Scottish Cup tie since 1949*’ are not quite what they seem given that if the games were drawn Celtic invariably won the replay. As for returning players I’d also point out that whilst Fernie, Nicholas and Maloney mainly flopped on return Mulgrew was a success when he came back.
To work
Jimbo
* I think this is true but possibly not
JIMBO67
Oh,come on-Charlie Mulgrew? He didn’t play for us first time around,so he can hardly be classed as returning!
Did Kyogo want to move? According to what we know, yes.
Did he want to go to Rennes right now? I think thats a fair assumption
Should we have told him he was going nowhere before Villa? Then you may have had an unhappy player on your hands.
Does the wee man have an issue that needs operating on? Apparently so.
Is it possible he might have gotten an injury that would have put his move in jeopardy? Of course.
Do Rennes need him right away? Given their predicament, they need goals urgently.
Did we want Jota back? Yes!
Have we got a replacement in mind? I hope so.
Will we be stronger at the end of this window? If certain things happen (KT now + New no9), yes we will be.
If we manage to bring in 2 more this week, we will have replaced 1 who wanted to go, with 3 who want to play their football at Parkhead.
I trust Brendan to know exactly what is needed.
KTF!

Sir Roderick Stewart was happy enough to play in Apartheid South Africa and he’s loved and admired by many Celtic fans so maybe not everyone is as concerned about such issues as you’d like to think.
And yes we move on, but with the knowledge that Jota left when it suited him and has returned when it suited him, so the relationship twixt player and club is entirely transactional.
Tierney would be different.
Arsenal hanging on to Tierney, just in case, until it suits them to let him leave.
Celtic and Kyogo?
BMCUWP
Charlie Mulgrew never played for the first team it’s true but he was a pro with us first time around so I think that he counts as a returning player. It was not as though nobody had heard of him or that he had purely been a youth player when he left, on loan, to Dundee United and then permanently to Wolves

If we are regarding Mulgrew as a qualifier for being a success 2nd time around then we have a clear winner already captaining our team.

Hi BAD:
”Hope” and “If” doing some heavy lifting there, mate.
The Timternet, as a disparate entity, seems to be hanging its striker hopes on Kvistgaarden of Brondby.
But think about it from Brondby’s point of view. Why would a football club sell its best striker with almost no time left in the window to find a replacement?
Oh! Wait! Hang on a minute! 🤣😂😅

Add to £70 Million in Bank.
What is the interest on this ?
6 Million using 5%.

Hi Bada:
Thanks for posting the link. Makes you wonder who all these wingers will be crossing to!
The big question is whether or not Lord Lucan Nicholson is going to produce a rabbit from a hat from out of left field to replace Kyogo. If there is anything simmering, Celtic have done a remarkable job of keeping a lid on it.

No argument there, mate.😊
Hopefully Brendan has chosen to just rest C-V.
Did he not say similar a few weeks ago?
Makes sense to get another winger in.
If Kuhn continues perform for the rest of the season, I can see him moving in the summer.
What’s the story with CCV ?
If Bada’s link to the Norwegian winger has credence, it is likely that Palma and maybe Yang are for the off.
The closer it gets to Monday with no news of a striker purchase, the higher the chances we will scrabble for a last minute bargain basement loan. Leicester’s Daka has been mentioned in dispatches.

Hi McCaff
If Valle is away, and EBT Arteta digs his heels in on KT, we have ONE left back for the rest of the season. It seems the KT decision rests on whether or not Dortmund buy Zinchenko, which could be a last hour of the window decision. We are in danger of being left high and dry.

Of course PL has influence. Policy dictates strategy and PL is on the Board to see strategy implemented. It’s not a claim it is on the Celtic Web site under Directors Responsibilities.
I’d copy paste but too knackered to get involved further.
Wed v Villa is a dead rubber. How much of winning that is worth sacrificing the sale of Kyogo who has wanted out for 4 months playing in a system that frustrates him or purchase of Jota in a deal that takes what it takes to clinch it
Why the need to personalise the issue during the transfer window around PL?
Celtic are a PLC they have business policies and it’s a balancing act.
The only way to change that fundamental is to become the community club that supporters represent.
Or to change one’s mind that in the grand scheme of professional football things could be a lot worse for the support.
I went on the official Brondby FC web page, copied and pasted, fannied around with Google Translate ( which is only 60-70% accurate, btw ) and couldn’t find a single cheep about Kvistgaarden leaving.
I was a tad sceptical before ( I know Big Audio won’t believe that🤣 ) but now I just can’t see it happening.
I would be interested in reading poster’s views on who we could possibly be targeting for striker. We have bloggers on here who have far better connections than I have. It just seems strange that we get random pieces of information about our left back dilemma and bids for wingers, and zero, absolute nada, about our most critical position at the moment.
Or has the Board told Brendan it’s not happening? Like loaning out Bernabei last season and leaving Taylor as the only left back?
INQU IV
Not entirely true regarding valle.
We still have Monty available.
Could it be a case of Rodgers seeing enough development within him to be considered as a backup full back for ourselves, in the making?
Still believe Tierney will sign before the window shuts, so the spotlight will be upon Taylor, as to whether he is actually going to see the season out with ourselves?
Regardless of what is in store, I still believe Rodgers knows full well what the situation is, and has to plan accordingly.
What those plans are, still remains nothing more than a guessing game at present.
So seemingly another member of the 1st team squad is being allowed to leave before a replacement has been signed. In this instance Valle isn’t surplus to requirements, in most of the supports opinion he is perhaps a better option than the other 1st teamer he vies for the the left back spot with. A few days to find a suitable replacement. is Brendan 100% sure KT will be joining or could it be that no one at Celtic wanted to p’off Barca by refusing to cut short his loan deal🤔 Anywho i guess if KT doesn’t arrive this window that big Liam will be our go to cover for the left sided full and center back positions😕
