The Glasgow Celtic Way
Morning,all.
I’ll write this article in the assumption that most of you watched the game. If you didn’t, I recommend the highlights on BBC iPlayer. It is well worth watching, even if we did finally go down 4-2. Gave us a proud Scottish goal difference of 13-14 though!
Going into it, I didn’t really think we would get much from this match, given our selection problems-many of them self-inflicted. A look at the bare scoreline suggests I was right. But that doesn’t even scratch the surface, no sirree. For starters, we were two down in five minutes! Our old defensive frailties of losing a cheap goal, followed by another while we are still trying to figure out how the first one came about. At that stage, I’m quite sure that one or two tellies got switched off-I got a phone call from a mate who said he was for off at half time-but those who did so missed a rousing comeback.
Followed by another heroic failure…
After five minutes, we truly looked in for a helluva doing. And little changed over the next twenty minutes either. Sure, we started to get our foot on the ball. Yes, we stopped getting cut open quite so easily, even if we were having kittens every time Villa got on the ball. But we started to create chances of our own.
Hatate shot tamely at Martinez when he was clean through, and I admit I thought we had probably blown our chance. Villa would tighten up, aware that we were still kicking. Then, with ten minutes remaining in the first half, we clicked. Hatate, looking really up for this, fed a delicious ball to the overlapping Taylor to cut back into the six yard box, the Villa defence got in a fankle, and Idah hooked the loose ball into the net.
Cue pandemonium in Celtic-supporting houses and venues everywhere!
I’d hardly settled back into my seat when we equalised, this time a cute reverse pass from Engels feeding AJ on the right of the box. His pass inside to the onrushing Idah was perfection, and suddenly the tie was even. That ever-so generous 1/2 on offer for Villa at the start of the game wasn’t looking like such a nailed-on certainty now, and there must have been a few hun mortgages in serious danger of not getting paid on Friday.
Two goals apiece at half time, a scoreline which reflected the effort that we had put in over the period just to get back on terms after a dismal start. Surely we wouldn’t repeat the errors in the second half?
Well, we didn’t. We just found new ways to make them happen. Even Schmeichel was guilty of giving them a free shot at goal, though he redeeemed himself with a wonderful save. He made a few of them on the night, I should add. We weathered the initial storm but weren’t really creating much of our own, then Villa pounced on our old pal frailty.
Scales lost a battle in the Villa half, Engels lost his on the halfway line-both players needed to be much stronger, I might add-and they were two on one against Trusty. The easy pass inside Trusty to Watkins left our keeper with no chance. A goal down, but this time we were looking tired, worn out by a relentless counterattacking side who looked threatening at every turn.
Even so, the manager waited longer than is customary to introduce his subs. Bernardo and Palma on 73 minutes with Cummings for the hat-trick seeking Idah on 79 minutes.
Another youngster given a chance on the night was Murray as a replacement for Scales. I confess these weren’t substitutions I thought to be wise while we were still in with a shout at 3-2. And even if it was a poor piece of play from Murray which gifted Villa the clinching fourth goal in added time-the hat trick for Rogers-I can’t place any blame on either. Both ran their heart out, gave their best. As did every player on the night. I was proud of them all, even as I was gutted at the final result. We didn’t quite stand on the shoulders of giants on the night, but I think they gave us a good punty-up!
The knockout stages await, with a battle in two and three weeks to see who goes through to the last sixteen. At the moment, the table and the format suggest either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. Both of whom are well clear in their domestic leagues.
Such is life when you are playing in the top club tournament in world football. They say that you have to beat the best to win it. Well, it certainly looks as though we will have to do just that. It’s The Glasgow Celtic Way. You never know, we might just have our first-choice centre-back available.

IQ4…the conversation isn’t about domestic ambitions, but to answer your question I still think we’re best placed to complete a Treble.
The conversation was about Euro ambitions, and the target of qualifying beyond group stages was reached…with a game to spare. That is a fact. My point was having achieved it the parameters move, because people are people and naturally want more, and now the chat is we’ve no chance against Bayern or Real because we let Kyogo go or we’ve not brought in KT.
That’s all!
#TitterYeNotCSC 🤣
I remember there was a stink about Beale being in the stands to watch the zombies before Van Bronkhurst was fired. Was said that it was unseemly.
Now, there are rumors that Beale, who was recently brought in as Slippy G’s assistant, may not have been booted out with Slippy G. Was his recent hiring another episode of him being brought in to replace someone who hadn’t already been fired?
if true, once is bad luck, but twice is just not a good look …
and on the subject of who knew what ….
Rennes manager who signed Kyogo was sacked.
Wonder if Celtic knew he was getting bagged, which would explain their desire to get Kyogo off the books?
hey … if PL is in fact the all seeing, all knowing deity some (incuding himself) believe him to be … anything is possible.

1 point more than I expected, three tough away games! -what did you expect?
———
This is what I said.
“We took 1 point from them. Not saying that’s too bad as the point was vital.”
I’m not looking for an argument. We did pretty well overall. We qualified which is all I hoped for.
My view is we were very lucky to get 2 teams who lost every game and conceded lots of goals.
We need to improve against the middle level to continue our development. Picking up a point or two against the big boys is a bonus.
INIQUITOUS- a lot of the guys we have got rid of were not quoted, bar Kyogo, cut and run,get as much as we can and recycle the money,I would wait till Monday to see if we are weaker mate, hopefully you’re well HH
Frodshambhoy
No argument.
We should be aspiring to pot 2 level- we took points off Atalanta and Brugge, so it’s a reasonable expectation.
We also took points from teams above us in Pot 3.
A very decent performance to build upon.

You’re really giving it the negative waves today, mate. If it’s any consolation,I agree with almost all that you say. In fact, given the number of departures this window,I’m beginning to think that the club prioritised this over the possibility of new signings.
Also, have you decided to abdicate? You’ve lost the numerical part of your moniker. Maybe your positivity went with it!
…and another thing, IQ4, there should be no ceiling on ambition!

How many teams left in the CL come from countries with a smaller population than Scotland?
I’ll take a wild guess and say none.
Surely we deserve credit for even being able to compete at this level at all.
My question would be “How many other teams have a governing FA who have no interest in improving the standard of the game in their home country?”
Until the SFA is removed in its entirety and replaced by forward thinking individuals prepared to stand up against vested interests for the good of the game as a whole, we won’t be able to attract the highest quality players required to reach the next level.
We deserve credit for our achievements in the Champions League this season, not only for competing but for being able to do so despite the best (worst) efforts of the SFA and the SMSM.
FRODSHAMBHOY no problem pal have a great day out in chester, but dont park in that carpark near the racecourse, a fiver for an hour, absolute disgrace👍👍❤
Billy Bhoy from page 2 –
It’s no problem for me to include a regular list of this season’s scorers. Perhaps not after every game but maybe at ’10 goal intervals’ which should hopefully mean every 3 or 4 games.
As tonight’s report should already include the January player of the month details I’ll try to remember and include the goalscorers table after the Motherwell game on Sunday.
SOLKITTS
Damn right. Our achievements are despite Scottish football, not because of it.
I said before the window even started we should be testing the water with Hearts to ask about Penrice. Maybe they did maybe they didnt. Now we could be in the position where Monty is ourLB if Scales has hamstring and Taylor gets injured on Sunday v Well.
Left back.
I still say we should’ve signed the big guy from Bodo Glimt when they gubbed us.
Big, strong and good on the ball.
BP – train there, several pints of MPA, and bus pass back.
Hope wee Joan is fighting fit.

Hi Bobby:
I think I’ve been defrocked! Or officially renunciated.🤣
I do not like being negative, believe me. Because of the immense tolerance of the wider Celtic support, the Board and CEO enjoy a very easy ride, with almost no scrutiny of their performance. No reinforcements in the next 72 hours, then a few injuries, and we will be resuscitating the Zombies.

I certainly share your concerns. As I said,
“In fact, given the number of departures this window,I’m beginning to think that the club prioritised this over the possibility of new signings.”
Inq
as I have a bit of familarity with canon law, I should point out that you cannot ‘have been renunciated’. Only you can renounce (or abdicate) your position as Inq IV. If you are deposed (in this case, by Sentinel Celts), you remain Inq IV unless and until you accept, in which case you are then said to have renounced or adbicated.
as for being defrocked…. that is an entirely different matter … and can mean very different things depending on the context (ecclesiastial or garden variety)… should you wish to clarify, I can then advise further … (although, if of the garden variety, I might prefer that you not share too many details)
🙂

Martinez free kick over bar for Man U.
Sevco 1-0 up. Raskin from a corner. Sevco up to 9th.
Sol,
You’re right.
Add to that the fact that the world has changed and kids have got many more distractions.
The nation isn’t producing any Denis Law’s Or Kenny Dal’s anymore, cause the kids are in doors listening to gangster rap, getting stoned and killing whores on PlayStation! 😂 Whereas we played outside from morning till night.
Nae Tanner baw players anymore mate.
The football authorities in Scotland only exist to keep alive the idea that an old firm still exists. We are so narrow minded that that’s the be all.
It’s unfortunately where we play our football.
Celtic are doing ok ..that’s where my focus has always . 👍
Ajax 1 Galatasaray 0
Athletic Bilbao 1 Plzen 0. Brilliant goal by Nico Williams
Gordon Banks level save from Ludogorets keeper vs Lyons.
Polls close in half an hour

Cracking goal for Ferencvaros
Ferencvaros incredible goal by Traore. If you get a chance, check it out. This is how to hit a ball from distance. 2-0 over AZ Alkmaar.
Sevco have obviously been working on corner routines. Their goal came from a clearly rehearsed and practiced move.
Elfsborg goal living a charmed life.
Brilliant goal by Fenerbache. 1-1. What a chip from the Moroccan.
Hoffenheim equalize at Anderlecht 1-1
Real Sociedad 1-0 over PAOK.
Roma 1 Eintracht 0
Sevco with Tav ( pen) at center half, and 3 at the back.
so was Inq really Neganon all along? Am I the only one who didn’t know this?
Or will I wake up tomorrow and this was all a dream? I
