Do We Never Learn?

Morning,all.

The good news from Wednesday was obviously that we qualified for the next stage of the tournament. The better news may be that we saw a resurgence in form of both Idah and Hatate, two players who had been having an underwhelming season so far. The bad news was that the mechanics of the play-off system means that we will play either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich-two sides who would have expected to be finishing in the top eight of the table before a ball was kicked, thus avoiding the next stage completely.

The even worse news is that we have probably triggered the outstanding suspended sentence on away fans attending. Which, in turn, means that further offences will be punished on a sliding scale, and could even lead to partial or full closure of Celtic Park for a future European match or matches.

It seems we never learn, doesn’t it? UEFA have made clear their opposition to flares and smoke bombs over the years, yet elements of our support seem to think that rules don’t apply to them, or that rules are there for breaking. Here’s the thing though-if you disagree with the rules, your only course of action is to get them changed. Flouting those rules, especially in the face of an ultimate authority which is absolutely determined to enforce them, only leads to tears. This is a lesson with countless precedents through the ages, with countless martyrs to show for it. Sometimes they had right on their side, other times they were simply rebels without a clue.

Pyrotechnics of any sort are illegal when used in crowd situations like inside a football ground. This isn’t just a football regulation, something dreamed up by a faceless killjoy bureaucrat somewhere; it is the law of the land, and applies in many other jurisdictions other than in Scotland. Regardless, when we play in UEFA competitions, we do so under their jurisdiction and under their rules.

I’m not going to point blame at any particular fan grouping for this, not even to suggest that the pyro in question was likely to be the work of the same groups who practice their “art” so regularly, and with impunity, in Scotland. That would be unfair. It is not though unfair to point out that the guilty parties over the years have cost the club and the fans a well-earned and hard-earned spotless reputation in the game by their antics, as well as a considerable sum of money. Now, it looks likely that they will have cost our travelling support the opportunity to see our favourites in one or other of the game’s great cathedrals. And they probably won’t even GAF either. Next chance they get, out the pyro will come. As though nothing ever happened, as though nothing they ever do has consequences.

So how do we deal with this going forward? One answer is our traditional method of self-policing, but that probably isn’t likely in these days of coked-up mindless thuggery and worse. Besides, while a boot in the baws would probably work just as well as it ever has, you can bet your bottom dollar that the police, stewards and CCTV operators would finally do their bloody job when it came to that particular offence. But doing nothing and carrying on as before is obviously not an option.

For years now, large sections of our support have complained that it is well-nigh impossible to get tickets for away games in Scotland, never mind in Europe. That they are always allocated to the same people, time after time. This is because the club allocates these tickets to those with a track record of attendance at away matches. Which, of course, means that if you cannot get an away ticket, you cannot get an away ticket in the future either.

Yes, it is a reward for loyalty. But it is unfair on everyone else. Certainly it is easier for the club to allocate a ticket to someone who is almost certain to accept it, than to allocate them in a lucky dip only to have the lucky winner decline the opportunity. But the fact remains that it is not fair, and it has caused resentment now for many years.

Equally, if the club keep racking up fines because of misbehaviour by away fans, is it even sensible to continue to allocate tickets to the same faces every time? Is this an area that the club should be looking at? Obviously we can’t ban every fan allocated a ticket for the Villa game, as that would be stupid. But the club must have a good idea who is most likely to cause this type of problem at games, and they should be proactive in dealing with it. Whether that means sending in our own employees with these groups as a means of keeping an eye on them-any volunteers for that thankless task?-or simply denying them the tickets because it is the club’s right to do so and they don’t need to give a reason, I don’t know.

I don’t know the answers. But I’m not paid to know them, nor to provide them. But I do know that the club has tolerated this for far too long, and it has to stop. The good name of the club has been damaged time and again. We have been hit in the pocket repeatedly. Now, the rest of the fanbase will have to suffer too.

In addition to which, our team is going to one of the most famous venues in the sport, in any sport. We face an uphill task, let there be no doubt about that. And thanks to the actions of a small bunch of selfish attention-seekers, we will have to do so without any support whatsoever.

Thanks a f….g bunch.

POTY Competition Update.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #36 ASTON VILLA 4 CELTIC 2 (IDAH(2))*

Good evening, friends.
For the 2nd European game in a row, we watched a game that had just about everything! But this week it was ultimate disappointment having done the harder work last week to ensure qualification.
The game kicked off at 8.00pm and 5 minutes later Celtic were already 2 down. Poor defensive cover on our right hand side saw a pass into Rogers to open the scoring. And the same player then bulleted a 20 yarder into the top corner, helped by the slightest of deflections of Scales’ big toe. Shellshocked and fearing the worst I tried to remind myself that a daft football game shouldn’t impact me that much and continued to watch as Celtic, slowly but surely, started to get a wee bit of possession and come more into the game.
Midway through the first half we passed up 2 or 3 opportunities, with Villa making some unforced errors but Celtic failing to capitalise, none more so than Hatate’s weak attempt in the 24th minute. We also had scares at the other end, most notably when Johnston did very well to appear from nowhere to clear one off the line.
In the 35th minute we finally had a reason to be cheerful, part 1. Taylor passed to Yang then continued down the left. Yang found Hatate and Reo’s first time pass to Taylor was perfect. Taylor’s low cross led to McGinn flicking the ball up for Idah to finish. A very good goal and very soon more was to come.
This time we had possession out on the right. A cut back to Engels on the edge of the area, a backheel from Arne into Hatate and an early cross across the 6 yard box to the waiting Idah and it was, unbelievably 2-2.
The second half continued much like the first. Celtic having some good passages of play but never looking as dangerous as Villa when they continued to create. With 60 minutes played and Celtic on the offence, Scales lost a duel high upfield leaving Celtic exposed to Villa’s breakaway. McGinn proved to be stronger than Engels and suddenly it was 2 on 1 against Trusty and the inevitable goal followed.
5 minutes later and most of us felt it was all over after a rather harsh penalty decision went against Trusty. Watkins stepped up, lost his footing and then effectively played the ball twice – shot with his right foot against his left foot and the ball spun over the bar. Decision – a free kick to Celtic and relief that we were still in the game.
91 minutes on the clock and still in with a chance of a draw but then we gift a goal away. Not the best defensive throw in towards substitute Murray but the young substitute could have taken the safe option to blooter it somewhere rather than be caught on the ball. Not that I’m sure the final goal really mattered as Celtic hadn’t really created any chances beyond Reo Hatate’s long range effort in the 72nd minute.
So we finish the league stage, qualifying in 21st place with 12 points on the board. 4 teams finished on 11 points and 1 of those, Dinamo Zagreb, missed out by having the worst goal difference of -7. So we now know for sure that had we only drawn last week against Young Boys that wouldn’t have been enough.
On Friday we will know whether we facing Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the play off round. I’m not sure it matters which one as both will be a huge ask.
We have now played 36 games this season, winning 26, drawing 7 and losing 3. We have scored 96 and conceded 32 (domestically it’s 83-18 and in Europe it’s 13-14). Thank you so much to the 68 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Schmeichel: 51
Johnston: 7
Trusty: 6
Scales: 0
Taylor: 0
McGregor*: 13
Engels: 15
Hatate*: 43
Kuhn: 3
Idah*: 66
Yang: 0
Bernardo: 0
Palma: 0
Cummings: 0
McCowan: 0
Murray: 0
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Aston Villa are –
Idah – 5 points
Schmeichel – 4 points
Hatate – 3 points
Engels – 2 points
McGregor – 1 point
And the overall positions after 36 games played are –
58 points – Kuhn
45 points – Schmeichel
44 points – Hatate, Maeda
43 points – Engels, McGregor
41 points – Bernardo, Scales
31 points – Trusty
24 points – Kyogo
23 points – Carter-Vickers, Johnston A, McCowan
19 points – Taylor, Valle
10 points – Idah
7 points – O’Riley
4 points – Forrest, Yang
3 points – Welsh
0 points – Cummings, Holm, Johnston M., Kenny, Murray, Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley

*PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY*
The monthly award is based simply on the total votes received over that particular month. During January we had 8 games across 3 competitions. In the league we had 5 (home to St Mirren and Dundee United and away games against Sevco, Dundee and Ross County). We had our home Scottish Cup win against Kilmarnock. And we closed the month off with back to back Champions League ties, at home to Young Boys and away to Aston Villa.
In third place with 165 votes is Kasper Schmeichel whilst the runner up on 170 was Calum McGregor. But the clear winner this month with 225 votes is Arne Engels.
Monthly winners –
August – Calum McGregor 184
September – Paulo Bernardo 173
October – Liam Scales 168
November – Nicola Kuhn 298
December – Kaspar Schmeichel 198
January – Arne Engels 225

It’s back to League action this weekend and an away trip to managerless Motherwell. The game is on Sunday with a 3.00pm kick off.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

MacMillan Cancer Care

Once again, the donations page has been set up for us by CHALMERSBHOY, and my grateful thanks to him for doing this and so much more.

Some good news. There are articles in Danish newspapers today that we are negotiating for Kvistgaarden, although Brondby are very reluctant to sell.

And here is The Unique Angle footage of Adam’s 2 goals.

Good morning friends and a Big Happy Friday to everyone who posts or lurks on this fine site.

Just Sayin’

The unique angle footage can be quite illuminating. Small things missed at the time can be highlighted.
Two well worked and finished goals.
Positive movement to build on, with cross balls coming in from left and right, and a penalty box predator to stick them away against a top goalkeeper.
The interesting thing for me was that the determination to get the game restarted quickly after the first meant little celebration. Sign of a strong, competitive spirit. Those are positives to build upon.

The key second half failures we have done to death: poor positional awareness, naivety, weak physically, the need for an additional experienced leader(s) to provide positive influence and motivation.

Adjustments at the back and a proper tackling midfield addition would go some way to addressing the frailties.

The next target is to at least take something positive from the home leg making whoever it is having to win the tie at their place not ours.
Avoiding a battering too, one hopes.

Perhaps the €12m or so “free cash” we have from January sales and top 24 CL awards can be spent to rectify at least
one area of concern and give the new Bhoy a few months to settle in.

Qualification next season is vital, otherwise we’ll end up in the competition for duds. With EPL and European also rans.

Just Sayin’
January 31, 2025 7:43 am

Given concerns over the season long durability of a defence containing CCV and KT, retaining GT and adding another CH would be sensible planning.

Nawrocki and Lagerbielke sales are inevitable and might go some way to covering the cost.

January 31, 2025 9:08 am

I had a feeling the Green Brigade had been on good European behaviour as they knew Villa was on the horizon and that was their chance to go south and show their credentials to England. It appears I was correct.

I’m not certain they threw the pyro though, as they seemed to be contained in an upper tier on their own , whilst the general support where down below, and going by videos I’ve seen, the pyro was used and thrown from there after the goals and not the top tier.

Nonetheless, ultra or just normal younger fan, the pyro culture is endemic amongst them as is the coke abuse.
This isn’t a Celtic problem though, it’s a symptom of wider society and an issue whereby they feel their young male identity has to be expressed in such a way.

Toxic masculinity? Maybe yes, or maybe just fragile minds and insecurities.

As you have pointed out, we find ourselves in a situation, where a very small minority, is still allowed to get away with acts of selfishness, that effects the majority of our support.

It’s an ongoing problem, that remains unchallenged, and time now for proper action to be taken imo?

A problem needs a solution, and find it amazing that our club along with the laws of the land, still refuse to address the issue?

My suggestion would be all those identified, by our club, should be handed over to the authorities to face, endangerment to life charges.
How brave would such eejits be with standing in front of a judge with potential prison sentences hanging over them, to go along with the banning orders?

Maybe harder to implement within so called fan groups.
But as these selfish cowards tend to cover up there faces, then action has to be taken against the fan group, if responsible.
Means possibly a reduction in amount of tickets for each flare involved, and let them police the issue themselves.

The club has the means to address the issues, yet refuse to do so, which in turn let’s down the majority of our support.

Fan groups won’t rat upon each other, so individuals face the authorities.
But our club can’t remain idle upon a situation that allows the very small minority to effect the majority any longer imo?

Young Celtic fans group members won’t “Rat” up on each other?

But you wouldn’t have a problem doing that to a young Tim who is Maybe a bit naive and could be making his very first mistake in life?

You want them handed to the authorities to face endangerment to life charges!?

Why don’t the club withhold say The Green Brigade allocation, albeit they don’t appear to be the offenders in this instance and offer all that allocation to other season ticket holders on an apply for a ticket basis and see what the response is?
im sure they wouldn’t be left with any tickets.
Having been in Birmingham, even offered a ticket but getting too old for the hassle, I never saw any trouble. Plenty of singing of the full repertoire of songs but nothing else.

I still think that the tickets for the European away games are falling into the wrong hands.
The majority of the tickets for Wednesday night ,supposedly went to corporate.
These are then being sold on to fans, some who don’t even have season tickets.
If the club had went ahead with the process of distributing the tickets in Birmingham, this would not happen.

Until a ban is actually handed out then nothing will change.

This might be the turning point for the idiots, but I doubt it.

I was told that the only real trouble was Villa fans, around 50 of them ran into the celtic supporters. An army of police and they somehow got through.

Speaking to people that went to Birmingham, I was told that the atmosphere in Birmingham was actually very good and the Villa fans that they met where reasonable people.

For me I would have rather spoke about our lack of options from the bench and the £100 million in the bank.
