Do We Never Learn?

Morning,all.

The good news from Wednesday was obviously that we qualified for the next stage of the tournament. The better news may be that we saw a resurgence in form of both Idah and Hatate, two players who had been having an underwhelming season so far. The bad news was that the mechanics of the play-off system means that we will play either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich-two sides who would have expected to be finishing in the top eight of the table before a ball was kicked, thus avoiding the next stage completely.

The even worse news is that we have probably triggered the outstanding suspended sentence on away fans attending. Which, in turn, means that further offences will be punished on a sliding scale, and could even lead to partial or full closure of Celtic Park for a future European match or matches.

It seems we never learn, doesn’t it? UEFA have made clear their opposition to flares and smoke bombs over the years, yet elements of our support seem to think that rules don’t apply to them, or that rules are there for breaking. Here’s the thing though-if you disagree with the rules, your only course of action is to get them changed. Flouting those rules, especially in the face of an ultimate authority which is absolutely determined to enforce them, only leads to tears. This is a lesson with countless precedents through the ages, with countless martyrs to show for it. Sometimes they had right on their side, other times they were simply rebels without a clue.

Pyrotechnics of any sort are illegal when used in crowd situations like inside a football ground. This isn’t just a football regulation, something dreamed up by a faceless killjoy bureaucrat somewhere; it is the law of the land, and applies in many other jurisdictions other than in Scotland. Regardless, when we play in UEFA competitions, we do so under their jurisdiction and under their rules.

I’m not going to point blame at any particular fan grouping for this, not even to suggest that the pyro in question was likely to be the work of the same groups who practice their “art” so regularly, and with impunity, in Scotland. That would be unfair. It is not though unfair to point out that the guilty parties over the years have cost the club and the fans a well-earned and hard-earned spotless reputation in the game by their antics, as well as a considerable sum of money. Now, it looks likely that they will have cost our travelling support the opportunity to see our favourites in one or other of the game’s great cathedrals. And they probably won’t even GAF either. Next chance they get, out the pyro will come. As though nothing ever happened, as though nothing they ever do has consequences.

So how do we deal with this going forward? One answer is our traditional method of self-policing, but that probably isn’t likely in these days of coked-up mindless thuggery and worse. Besides, while a boot in the baws would probably work just as well as it ever has, you can bet your bottom dollar that the police, stewards and CCTV operators would finally do their bloody job when it came to that particular offence. But doing nothing and carrying on as before is obviously not an option.

For years now, large sections of our support have complained that it is well-nigh impossible to get tickets for away games in Scotland, never mind in Europe. That they are always allocated to the same people, time after time. This is because the club allocates these tickets to those with a track record of attendance at away matches. Which, of course, means that if you cannot get an away ticket, you cannot get an away ticket in the future either.

Yes, it is a reward for loyalty. But it is unfair on everyone else. Certainly it is easier for the club to allocate a ticket to someone who is almost certain to accept it, than to allocate them in a lucky dip only to have the lucky winner decline the opportunity. But the fact remains that it is not fair, and it has caused resentment now for many years.

Equally, if the club keep racking up fines because of misbehaviour by away fans, is it even sensible to continue to allocate tickets to the same faces every time? Is this an area that the club should be looking at? Obviously we can’t ban every fan allocated a ticket for the Villa game, as that would be stupid. But the club must have a good idea who is most likely to cause this type of problem at games, and they should be proactive in dealing with it. Whether that means sending in our own employees with these groups as a means of keeping an eye on them-any volunteers for that thankless task?-or simply denying them the tickets because it is the club’s right to do so and they don’t need to give a reason, I don’t know.

I don’t know the answers. But I’m not paid to know them, nor to provide them. But I do know that the club has tolerated this for far too long, and it has to stop. The good name of the club has been damaged time and again. We have been hit in the pocket repeatedly. Now, the rest of the fanbase will have to suffer too.

In addition to which, our team is going to one of the most famous venues in the sport, in any sport. We face an uphill task, let there be no doubt about that. And thanks to the actions of a small bunch of selfish attention-seekers, we will have to do so without any support whatsoever.

Thanks a f….g bunch.

”If” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

You are advocating we turn away from the opportunity to maximise revenue?
Doesn’t sound too progressive and reeks of equivalence with the Hun being best policy.

“Got real” to what end?

We are a CL team because we are the pre-eminent team in Scotland, but due to the lowly country coefficient we will have two qualifying rounds next season.
Should we throw these to enter the inferior tournament?
That makes no sense on a footballing or financial level.

We have an opportunity to progress in CL terms and already have exceeded expectations based on our starting position this season.

Perhaps those happy to accept mediocrity should “ get real”.

The club allow the fans groups night before the game access to stadium to set up displays.

Next day there are hundreds of pyros on display in those sections during the game.

So, why do they powers that be let them do it all over again by giving them early access to the stadium again.

Why is the club not telling them they can’t let them do it because they keep letting off
Pyrotechnics in the stadium?

Not like this is all a new thing either.

Find myself saying Hmmm a hell of a lot now!

You’re right, they don’t have to go to prison to be badly affected.

If we are going to try and deal with this fair enough, but let’s do it sensibly!

Perhaps someone who knows more about this than I can explain what financial loss would Celtic suffer if away fans are banned in Germany. Do Celtic get a percentage of away tickets for inthe CL?

Pitymevin,

years of getting access to the stadium, among other things, would suggest a very cosy relationship, no?

In all that time, all those meetings, they still haven’t got round to definitively dealing with the pyro problem?

oh you have a display for this weekend? You’ll be wanting in the night before? No problem!

this not all seem a tad strange?

Moronic so called journalists at Brendan presser spend fully a third of it asking about the smoke bomb. Brendan says the same thing 16 ways to Sunday. Not one single incisive question about the length of time it has taken to “strengthen the squad” or how late in the day it is to recover from the entirely expected KT news, or to examine the options. Brendan clammed up about KT and diverted other questions by playing up Jota. Not one single question about Taylor contract.

Our decision making and support for the manager is a chaotic, incoherent shambles. Nicholson is way out of his depth. Having nobody signed on the dotted before Kyogo and Valle left is flat out incompetence. And we keep repeating these failures, season after season.

Pitymevin

BAD, would that not be to easy.

Mike has made a great point, this doesn’t cost us anything, so no problem here.

Now if we have a portion of the stadium closed, maybe then the board might just say something.

At least one person today has suggested they be put in a court and charged with endangering life.
That sounds like the kinda crime that would carry a heavy sentence!

Ban all corporate supports all European games.

If its good enough for the GB then the cap should fit for corporate to.

If they can’t behave, then get them out.

I would also ban them from alcohol in the stadium if there are any more failures to comply with the rules.

A mountain in New Zealand has been granted the rights of a person according to the New Zealand parilament.

Now, before some of you complain about ‘woke this’ and woke that…. remember, companies were given the similar status 150 years ago, and in many respects have more rights than natural people these days. .

You were correct about the fact it’s all about the Munchengladbucks. Let’s be honest, most things end up about money

But we’ve now thrown a lot of young people in the dungeon, only to realise they are actually innocent.

And that’s how easy it is to get it wrong.

I hope the young ultras who follow us do the right things and prove how good they can be.

There just seems to be a haste to blame them every time any negative story about our fans happen.

BAD I told my story before, how I got lifted only because I wore a celtic scarf. Flung out of my parental home because my mother and father brought me up better and didn’t believe I had done nothing wrong.

Only for the top brass to arrive while I’m moving my stuff out into my brothers place. Because I wanted the badge number of the cunt that jailed me as he sang my rights in the soldiers song. His hun mates only to happy to get rid of the mickey bastard.

Anyway I didn’t return to my parental home because I couldn’t believe they would trust the word of these cunts before their own son.

Ah the good old days.

Maybe lawwell didn’t leave. Maybe Nicholson didn’t take over. It was all a ruse. Sleight of hand. A wee magic trick to placate the restless celtic support.

Best one I seen at Heathrow one day was this man and his wife at security on transit. She had just bought a bottle of chanel#5 on flight from USA. Security said she couldnt take it on flight unless in checked baggage. Fuck you lot says the hubby. If she aint keeping it neither are you. Takes the bottle out of the box. Asks any ladies in the queue if they want a spray of it. Then breaks the top off and pours it into the bucket of confiscated items. Class.
Security lost for words but boy the area smelt nice

I am sorry that happened to you. I have some understanding … but on a much smaller scale. My brother and I used to take the bus to school. The bus driver was a psychopath. Genuinely. He Started off with reporting kids for the slightest transgression (my brother and I got reported for ‘fighting’.. now, Liam and I had a few barnies growing up, but that day was not one of them. Got a note sent home, and got a belting when my dad got home. Not like we got hit alot at home (which is why the incident stuck with me), but the fact that the school had sent a note home/we had embarassed the family … my parents took that shit to heart.. They just took the driver’s word and the school’s word. But he then started grabbing kids and scaring them… he was big heavy guy (or at least he seemed so to an 8 year old me)

The driver got worse and worse… I remember hm picking up a kid (Dennis Boyer …and repeatedly banging his head on the roof of the bus. dont know why I remember his name, but I do. And to be fair, Dennis was a cheeky little prick who would have tested the patience of a saint, but he didnt deserve what happened to him. I cant remember exactly how (I was only about 8), but somehow later the driver was caught and arrested for literally beating up the kids on the bus. I do remember it being awkward with my parents when that came out …. they knew they had belted us for nothing.

But in my sense there was always a part of Scottish / Catholic culture that says ‘dont question authority … police, teachers, police ….’ And although the influence of church has faded in Scotland and most countries, I think elements of that remain.

And I have always thought that that was partly why, over the last decade, most Celtic fans sat on their fannies and did nothing when they knew their club was being cheated, and when they knew their club was involved in the cover up, if not the cheating itself…. ‘ Dont question your better and elders/dont let the outsiders know your problems’ is something that is deeply ingrained in many, particularly, minority cultures..

Oh yeah, been there!

Also trying to bring up a teen boy who is quite taken by the ultra lifestyle – the clothes and stuff.

Honestly, as good a big lad as he is, I worry about him following the club.

Growing up in Bridgeton I’m well aware you can lose your life wearing our club colours in the wrong place, nevermind getting accused of stuff you aint doing!

It’s also hard being a young person in this world now, we had much more room to breathe.

I hope the young hoops have many more brilliant trips abroad watching their team, as we are the best fans in the world and they deserve to get as many great experiences as they can while they are young.

Picture the scene. A student party, top floor of a block of tenements on a road behind Byers Road. Noise is as expected, but someone in the block got narky and phoned plod, who duly turned up and decided everyone had to bugger off. Told us all to collect our drink and get out.
Enter, stage left, a (now) Swindon based co-owner of this fine site, who picked up an almost untouched half bottle of Gordon’s Gin (posh student, or special offer at Agnews?) and was on his way out of the door when a plod asked him where he thought he was going with the bottle.
”Well, you told us to pick up our bottles and go,” replied our hero.
”Nae chance,” replied PC Plod, “There’s nae top on that bottle and you cannae take open bottles of spirits onto the street.”
Our hero looked around for the bottle top, couldn’t find one, so promptly drank the remainder of the half bottle (ie almost all of it), then turned to plod and pointing at his stomach, said, “Is this container sealed enough for you?”
PC Plod was speechless, as were all of his colleagues and everyone else at the party who saw this happen.
Another true story from “Tales of an 80s student.”
