Time for The Steelmen

Sunday’s fixture should be interesting. For starters Celtic will be quite jaded given the energy expended in Birmingham, plus we have selection issues. As such, it’s not a straightforward stroll in the park.

The departed/unavailable/injured list is piling up,,Scales, Forrest, Palma, Kyogo, CCV, Valle,,that’s most of a team with some issue or another.
We can also throw in tired mainstays like Adam, Reo, Callum, Taylor, Kuhn, Engels,,and there’s a good chance the tired Trusty will have a complete rookie in Dane Murray beside him.
It’s possible we will witness a second debut for Jota aka Boy Wonder, but Daizen is well rested and I don’t expect him to be benched for this affair.

Adam is a certainty as is Kasper, Daizen, Greg and Kuhn,,after that who knows. I’d like to see Luke and Bernardo drafted in, a Trusty/Murray combo at central defense doesn’t fully inspire me but needs must. Ideally Idah scores the goals to take the three points then Cummings gets more minutes.

As for our opponents, losing the manager is just another spanner in the works as we cannot possibly know what to expect. Caretaker managers are dangerous in that respect, regular formation and/or specific player responsibilities can easily be switched by the man without his head on the chopping block. I’m fine with that, adjusting on the day is part and parcel of football, as is stamping your own impression on the team.

Everything taken together makes the affair much more interesting than a normal February SPL away clash.
I miss the midweek games due to work, so this is my introduction to life after Kyogo, still cant believe hes gone. But I backed Adam as top scorer, I read he was very good in Brum, Im really looking for him to assume the mantle of our main man up front, so some more goals from the Corkman would be very welcome.

Even though it’s February the window is still open, I’ll access at the end, but looking at the last matchday squad and looking ahead to tomorrow’s, we clearly need players. The current squad has/had too many passengers, good job shifting some out and being cash positive, but it’s bringing them in that really counts.
I doubt Brendan would have sanctioned all the loans/departures unless he believes he will be replacing them with better players, his type of players, or he wouldn’t have left himself short, like Stephen Welsh on loan when we could have done with him, could do with him available tomorrow. Palma is another example, he’s better than nothing if you get my drift,,if he wasn’t getting replaced he would be kept for numbers alone and when we are already winning to rest legs.
A clear out in football (unless you’ve a massive squad/wagebill that needs trimming which we don’t) equals arrivals. With the group stages settled, with most teams starters/backups established, with money to spend and preparing to do, the time is nigh.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

This would not be a good time to take the foot off the gas, lose focus, be complacent get tired, become drained and drop points.
The last thing we need is a resurgent Hun sensing opportunity at 7 points behind, albeit we have our game in hand v Dundee at home on Wednesday.

We have a hugely onerous schedule throughout February- 8 games in 23 days.
5 in the league.
So no respite at all.
This league is still to be won.

Time to man up Celtic.
Definitely a time to get a couple of fresh enegetic recruits to help ease the burden.
If only on loan.

In contrast the Huns have a leisurely 5 games in 24 days.
4 in the league and a home win in the cup v Queens Park.

I hope we are staying just above Sevco, our squad is valued at €121m compared to Sevco’s €77m.

That’s a €44m of a gap.

We are miles ahead in terms of resources.

Last year our turnover was £124m.

Operating Expenses grew to £117m.

Wages were up 8% to €64m.

Our league position is commensurate with the resources made available to the Manager.

We’ve spent €70m (gross) over the last two seasons on recruitment.

Roughly speaking over the last three seasons were about + €20m in transfers. During Brendan’s tenure (2 seasons) it’s approximately + €40m.

Without significant domestic broadcast income. Earning money in the transfer market becomes more important.

Context:

Aston Villa earned £148m from the EPL last season.

Celtic earned £4.5m from the SPFL.

Bayern and Real t/o was €1bn.

The SPFL is rated 43rd in the Global Football ratings between Algeria and Morocco.

Whatever the accurate rating is, it’s miles behind the top 5. It’s a considerable distance behind the Belgian, Dutch and even the Championship.

This is a major factor in attracting players to the club.

Like the CL. The EPL and SPFL have a merit system for winnings. The higher you finish the more you earn. Prize money is funded by broadcasting and sponsorship.

Failure to qualify for the CL would be a huge issue for Celtic, given our negligible domestic broadcasting earnings. Clubs normally bridge the gap by player sales.

Our need to sell would be exacerbated by the lack of domestic broadcasting income (£4.5m).

Without money in the bank, the fire sale would be more severe.

Unlike Aston Villa we can’t count on figures like £148m to soften the blow.

It’s a pity that some folk can’t seem to take much joy from where we are at in the CL.

As the financial gap widens, it’s getting harder to reach these levels in football’s premier club competition each season.

Jobo,

This breakdown of UEFA’s funding model highlights where our CL income is coming from.

Where do you even begin to dispute that total nonsense.

Re CL revenue:

Swiss Ramble, considered a respected source, has our estimated CL revenue post the league stage at 45m, I assume euros. I also assume this includes our share of broadcast income.

with the revenues in spfl the main money is to be made in CL. We are never gonna win the damn thing but every stage is manna from heaven and we should be recruiting to get as far as possible. This January, sorry this first weekend in February now should be gearing us up for qualification next year.

You say we have spent 70m gross on transfers in last two years. Do you know how much we have spent net?

Fir Park Motherwell. Never the easiest place to go in my opinion. Many games have been close fought results here and I expect tomorrow to be no different. The fact that they are managerless for the first game adds to my concerns as generally not always though a team under a new or interim manager seems to get results. Expect changes after Wednesday as a tough schedule ahead this month. Maybe Ralston – Ccv back – Jota at some point and Johnny Kenny on bench.

Morning all

Surprised, disappointed even to read yesterday that we should see ourselves as a Europa League team and not a Champions League team. I can understand why people think it but if you don’t aim high you sure as hell won’t hit high. Tilting at windmills perhaps but we’ve had some grand moments in the Champions League these last three seasons despite only winning 4 games.

I have a ticket for tomorrow and although it’s only a fortnight since I was last at a game, it seems longer so I am excited at the prospect even this early. Fir Park is probably the ground I’ve been to most often apart from Paradise and Hampden and I’ve seen some big wins there, some catastrophic defeats too but there have also been some really drab, forgotten games as well. I hope we win.

Very disappointing window it has to be said. I don’t what has gone wrong or big mistakes have been made by employees/directors of Celtic but unless a left back and either a striker or a holding midfielder are signed (preferably both) we will go into the last third of the season weaker than anybody expected 31 days ago. It should not be thus

Hi Mike:
Reports I read had a slightly different slant. Nunez wanted to go, but Liverpool said ‘You have a contract with us, and we have an EPL and Champions League to win.”

Below is from the BBC. Pity Celtic had not given a similar reply to Kyogo.

Darwin Nunez wanted to speak with Al-Nassr before they signed Jhon Duran but Liverpool told them the Uruguay striker, 25, was not for sale at any price.

Let’s imagine the Iheanacho rumour has some truth in it. I hope it is not, because the last time I saw him, his attitude reminded me of Eduardo’s. CGAF. He worked with Brendan before. So why are we still relying on Brendan’s rolodex? Where is our vaunted scouting network?
Regardless of whether it’s true or not, something is badly awry.

Find it bit of a ridiculous situation, where we go into a tricky away day at motherwell.
With struggling to put a full 20man squad in place, which should have made the game a formality, especially with 5 sub rule.

That doesn’t seem to be in place, with youngsters without any real game for ourselves, having to play back up roles, in numerous positions now, by the looks of things?

Since the unexpected selling of kyogo, totally lost in which direction this window is going to be concluded.
Letting 4 go from our original 25man CL squad, with only 3 replacements allowed, and presume jota is going to be 1 of the 3.
Yet where and who, are going to fill the other 2 places?

Even on the bigger picture, bearing in mind CL qualification matches.
We may well add another 4 players moving on from our current squad, along with returning players from loan deals, early within the summer window.

Now we could be looking at the squad trying to get restructured, but the planning going into doing so, seems at ridiculous levels, even if that is the plan in the first place.

Get the right result tomorrow, and hopefully things might become clearer.
Sounds easier than actually putting into operation, and don’t believe our club should be in such a position whatsoever imo.

Just Sayin.

I stand by the benefits to Scottish football as a whole of CL money ceasing to be a factor.

In any case what is the actual difference between EL and CL income especially if it means runs to the final or semis?

With a healthy cash balance the need to sell a player diminishes.

Did you think Seville was a waste of time?

CL money distribution is the reason our game is less competitive but perhaps that is the last thing you want. It is just a source of discontent.

TMG.
It’s all very well having the extra resource but not if it’s not put to use.
It does remove the old need of having to sell a player which is wise but why is more of that reserve not spent on better players in key positions that clearly need a wee lift?

How big a factor does keeping the gap with R2ngers within sufficient distance to give the illusion there is competition?

Don’t tell me there is not a strong athletic midfielder or LB somewhere in the world who could physically strengthen the squad within our price range, until Engles and Bernardo bulk up.

…Unfortunately the players we are probably have options. If an EPL club is interested we don’t have a hope.

Convincing Arne to move from Germany to the SPFL was a considerable coup.

Celtic playing in the CL is similar to Scotland or Ireland reaching the World Cup or Euros. Getting out of the initial league phase is a mighty achievement.

Anyway

Brighton’s gamble of a €200m net spend last summer is looking a bit dodgy this afternoon.

Breaking into the CL positions in the top 5 leagues isn’t easy.

Ask Spurs, Leicester and Man Utd.

Auldheid,

It will be interesting to see how the final income figures breakdown at the end of the campaigns.
Especially factoring in cost of wages etc.

The players scouted is determined by what the manager wants.

I enjoyed it very much, thanks.
One of those non ticket attendees on a fly/ drive from Madrid. A wonderful experience.

For someone who appears progressive your preference for EL participation seems at odds with that mindset.

There will always be huge disparity in Scotland between us and the rest but advocating equivalence with the Huns in Euro participation terms is nonsensical.

The EL is for EPL duds and Euro also rans.
The Huns are welcome to it.

We are bigger than that and should aspire to be the best we can be.

Looks like we have earned €45m already excluding gate receipts etc.

We should forego that for some altruistic rationale you champion?
