Time for The Steelmen

Sunday’s fixture should be interesting. For starters Celtic will be quite jaded given the energy expended in Birmingham, plus we have selection issues. As such, it’s not a straightforward stroll in the park.

The departed/unavailable/injured list is piling up,,Scales, Forrest, Palma, Kyogo, CCV, Valle,,that’s most of a team with some issue or another.
We can also throw in tired mainstays like Adam, Reo, Callum, Taylor, Kuhn, Engels,,and there’s a good chance the tired Trusty will have a complete rookie in Dane Murray beside him.
It’s possible we will witness a second debut for Jota aka Boy Wonder, but Daizen is well rested and I don’t expect him to be benched for this affair.

Adam is a certainty as is Kasper, Daizen, Greg and Kuhn,,after that who knows. I’d like to see Luke and Bernardo drafted in, a Trusty/Murray combo at central defense doesn’t fully inspire me but needs must. Ideally Idah scores the goals to take the three points then Cummings gets more minutes.

As for our opponents, losing the manager is just another spanner in the works as we cannot possibly know what to expect. Caretaker managers are dangerous in that respect, regular formation and/or specific player responsibilities can easily be switched by the man without his head on the chopping block. I’m fine with that, adjusting on the day is part and parcel of football, as is stamping your own impression on the team.

Everything taken together makes the affair much more interesting than a normal February SPL away clash.
I miss the midweek games due to work, so this is my introduction to life after Kyogo, still cant believe hes gone. But I backed Adam as top scorer, I read he was very good in Brum, Im really looking for him to assume the mantle of our main man up front, so some more goals from the Corkman would be very welcome.

Even though it’s February the window is still open, I’ll access at the end, but looking at the last matchday squad and looking ahead to tomorrow’s, we clearly need players. The current squad has/had too many passengers, good job shifting some out and being cash positive, but it’s bringing them in that really counts.
I doubt Brendan would have sanctioned all the loans/departures unless he believes he will be replacing them with better players, his type of players, or he wouldn’t have left himself short, like Stephen Welsh on loan when we could have done with him, could do with him available tomorrow. Palma is another example, he’s better than nothing if you get my drift,,if he wasn’t getting replaced he would be kept for numbers alone and when we are already winning to rest legs.
A clear out in football (unless you’ve a massive squad/wagebill that needs trimming which we don’t) equals arrivals. With the group stages settled, with most teams starters/backups established, with money to spend and preparing to do, the time is nigh.

Because Jota’s as comfortable going outside as he is going inside, he gives defenders much more of a problem to deal with.

Thought he was so positive when he came on.

Afternoon

On bus home from game. Bit of a scrappy first half but two smashing goals. Much better in 2nd but could not kill them off. Jota looked understandably nervvy couple of touches but by the end looked in pretty good nick. Big Idah looked our worst striker since Fortune a few weeks ago but he led line really well today.

2-1 on 90 minutes was absolutely ridiculous given the gulf in ability. It was a no-contest on paper and this translated to the pitch but we are very wasteful with our possession. There were times I worried that our insistence on trying to score the perfect goal would come back to haunt us but thankfully JPNF – oops sorry, I mean Jota – popped up to secure the win.

Right Celtic, fingers oot and spend some cash FFS!

When asked by Sky Sports if a striker was his Deadline Day priority, Rodgers replied: “That is our plan. There’s lots of work going on behind the scenes in order to do that so we’re hopeful that we can. We want to have the strongest squad we possibly can. We’ve lost a couple of players that were important players for us but also players have gone out on loan so we know we want to get into the market to have the strongest squad we can to finish off the season.
“It’s always difficult (at this stage in the window) But there are good players available in January. There’s always the mentality that you can’t get good players but there is availability and we can afford it, so I’d like to think that we can do that.

Hi maccargo:

Pity that Nicholson and the geniuses on our Board didn’t act decisively in the market 31 days ago! Maybe they don’t want to?

thise last few lines are clearly aimed at the board.
And probably over the Dane.

Everyone and his brother know we are in the market for a striker which raises the ante. Seeing as how we sold kyogo. Mind we refused to meet Norwich’s 6m asking price so they were able to bump it up to 9m on last day.

KT did not get off the bench today. 18 year old Lewis-Skelly started and scored and was substituted after 90 minutes by Italian international Calafiori, so the youngster could get an ovation. Seriously doubt that EBT Arteta will play KT except in cameos, or allow him to go.

In other news ( or rumour ), Benfica have backed out of Malacio loan, possibly because of his history of knee operations, and he is once again being touted to Celtic.

Strelic or unknown Swede still touted as possible incoming striker loans. Rumours unfortunately thin on actual facts. Only Celtic could fcuk up a transfer window this badly.

Hi Gordon:
I went back to listen to it (twice). I respectfully disagree. To me, it was a deflection to the Board.

He has been saying “There’s lots of work going on behind the scenes” for 31 days now. It’s doing a lot of heavy lifting, and the the only thing one can deduce from the available evidence is that the “behind the scenes” effort is focused on offloading players. if Cummings goes, we will have lost 7 and gained 1.

The existing return for 31 days of “lots of work” is, to borrow a Dolly Parton phrase, “Pure, plumb pitiful.” We have either the worst negotiators in world football, or we are the cheesiest, or we are possibly both.

I can imagine the reaction of a selling club CEO to a message, “ Haw, Boss, we got a Nicholson from Celtic on Line 2.”

”Aw, FFS!! No again!!”😱

Two ingredients to contribute to keeping a game in the cliffhanger category are failure to turn dominance into goals and the physical frailty of part of our defence. Both were present today and resulted in an enjoyable, if tense game.

Having toiled personally in the grand game, I have to admit to admiration for both the flexibility and fitness of Taylor and Maeda. Some of Taylor’s swivels would rip my groin to shreds. But enough of my good points, let’s celebrate the good stuff 😄

Ralston’s cross and Maeda’s header were sublime. Idah’s finish was good old fashioned striker play. But Jota’s goal, although probably offside, was the desired final thrill in a bog of a match.

Motherwell played to their strengths. Take that as a pun, if you will. High balls behind our defensive line, or simply high balls into our defence create panic, especially on the left side. Here is a painful thought, I am not sure that Tierney will improve that issue. For sure, he will get a battering. Scales arrival plus diminished stamina solved that issue on the left.

Since I mentioned Scales let me have one final play on words. Every football match is similar to fate playing with a set of scales. Fate tilts the scales in one direction and then the other. Most of the time, Motherwell were on the lighter side of our scales. But there is even more nonsense that can be screwed out of this physic. Each player’s performance is determined by their personal set of scaled. Hatate’s creative passes are balanced against his frequent loss of the ball. Idah’s stumbles are balanced against his positioning and goal scoring. And so it goes. Some see a player’s scale tilting one way; others see it tilt the other.

with the exception of Yang, I saw a lot of positive tilting, with McCowan in balance. The ref? He was so tilted, he should have fallen over! As for VAR, well it was electronic tilting on a brand scale.

Enjoy your life,

Rebus

Therefore, well onside 😁

The first offside decision was the only one that was dubious. The camera position at Fir Park makes accurate decision making impossible, and the lines drawn were more of a guess than anything. I recall Jota having a very good finish ruled out there in the past, with the lines drawn at a similar part of the pitch.
The Kühn overhead kick was sublime, but unfortunately he was offside earlier in the move.
Jota’s goal was never in doubt, as he was behind the ball when it was played.
The SPFL should be stipulating a MINIMUM of 3 side-on cameras for each half of the pitch – one covering from halfway to the penalty area, one covering the area, and one on the goal line. Fir Park appears to only have one camera per half, plus the SKY set up.
Ideally we should move to the semi automatic technology as used in UEFA competitions.

A thing of beauty
February 2, 2025 9:19 pm

Lots to be pleased about today. We controlled the game but with that control we should be scoring more goals and taking any jeopardy out the game. Beaton on VAR did not help. The push on CCV is enough to take him under the ball. It’s a foul and Beaton knows it. The offside was too close to call but he was able to say offside even though the lines were touching. That keeps the game live so I hope when Jota tucked away the third it sickened Beaton to the pit of his stomach.
As for the window, BR is clearly calling out the board. He thinks you can get good players in January and will be telling our board that Rennes managed it. Honestly, to come out this window weaker than we went in is negligent. We should be planning for the CL qualifiers yet we are willing to introduce a level of risk that could put even being in the qualifiers in peril. Now I know we are 13 points clear but they are not as shite as they were and we are not as good as we were. Why can’t we just leave them in the dirt instead of pulling ourselves back towards them all the time.

Just catching highlights of game. That goal we conceded. Again, big worries on how susceptible we are to a fast break from having possession and losing it quickly in the opposition half.

This is something the Huns punish us on countless occasions this past year. And yet, still no lessons learned.

Calton,

You are correct about Jota’s position as Maeda cut the ball back to him. I wondered about that at the time but on watching highlights, I see that is what happened.

It must have been, else VAR Beaton would have chalked it off!

Maybe due to the constant changes but our defence (other than Atalanta) always seems vulnerable and disjointed when the ball goes into our box. Bayern will rip us apart if it isn’t sorted 🙈

Maybe because of our attacking style our defensive and midfield players often have an inability to sense danger on the park. McGregors shocking pass today and the subsequent defensive frailties leading up to Wells goal not withstanding the push on CCV sums up our weaknesses which will continue to be exposed

Far easier afternoons workout than I was expecting.
Wasn’t in the humour for a nail biter so glad about that.
Was all about gaining the 3 points today, so mission accomplished.

Very professional how we went about our business, and always in control, despite the lacks in some of our passing.

Need two teams usually to provide a higher degree of entertainment value. But motherwell weren’t too interested in providing to much in that regards. So mostly an attack defence, becoming part of our normal within Scottish football still.

Thankfully Jota gave us that in the end, to finish off another satisfying display and result.
