The Crying Game
Morning,all.
I’m on review duties today instead of our usual MAHE Monday missive. And I have to say that despite a blistering start, that first half left me distinctly underwhelmed. It all started so well, a first minute goal with Maeda climbing to meet an excellent cross from Big T. And that was as good as it got for a while.
In fairness to our side, we weren’t getting any favours from the officials on or off the park. In fact,we had two goals ruled marginally offside in the second half, and I remain unconvinced on either. Or on the validity of the Well equaliser, come to that. But it doesn’t alter the fact that, after that quick opener, we really struggled to get much going in that first half.
To the extent in fact that Motherwell started to look more likely than us, and proved it midway through the first half with a dodgy equaliser. After some CalMac carelessness in midfield, the ball was swung over from the left, which CCV rose to clear. An obvious push in the back made sure that he missed it, and as the ball ricocheted around the goalmouth, Armstrong of Well, who had strongarmed CCV out of the way in the first place, score a debut equaliser for the home side.
This,I might add, is a guy on loan from Carlisle United. Literally the worst side in the EFL, bottom of Tier 4. Can’t get a game for them but scores against us, and was a handful throughout. Inexcusable.
We were struggling to do much, although we did create the occasional chance at the other end. And on the half hour mark, Idah struck to put us ahead. A wonderful ball from Maeda on the left, across the six yard box for Idah to give us the lead. It’s almost as though he feels liberated by knowing that he is the current first choice, instead of having to prove himself every week from the bench.
The second half was a vast improvement from us, and Motherwell barely got a look-in. Shortly after the restart, we had the ball in the net again, Kühn this time. Harshly ruled out by Beaton on VAR. Worse was to come later in the half when Idah had one chopped off in even more debatable circumstances. But even as we searched for that elusive third, I don’t think we were in danger of losing an equaliser. And when Jota arrived late on the scene, all hail the conquering hero, it was almost in the stars.
Scoring on his third debut, and right in front of our fans. In the last minute of added time too. An iconic image for sure as he raised his arm in salute to the fans, then ran back to restart the game while on the verge of tears. He has had a torrid time since he left us, and we can only hope that his cameo sub appearance and late goal are a sign of things to come.
We now move on to either Manic Monday or Groundhog Day. Time will tell. In my opinion, we have made a complete mess off this window in much the same way that we so nearly screwed up the summer one. We knew Kyogo was offski, and made no move to secure a replacement before selling him. We knew Taylor wasn’t for signing a new contract any time soon, and that Como were courting Barcelona’s Valle. And that these two factors seriously complicated issues at left back. We also knew that it was unlikely that Arteta would allow Tierney to leave last month-yet no immediate move was made for a left back.
Nor a hard and mobile defensive mid in the mould of Big Vic.
I dunno about you folks, but I’m fed up being told how well-run a club we are when we continually screw up on transfers. And when our No 1 target up front is a guy we first looked at 18 months ago-and were quoted €4m-whose value has apparently trebled, I’d say that there are certain people charged with bringing players to the club who should be nowhere near the role.
There will be more on this particular topic later in the week, but BR must be getting mightily miffed at it all. Or deja-vu all over again to the 2018/19 season. Yep, we won the treble that season. But we had to do it without our manager. Lessons need to be learned from this, lessons that should have been learned six years ago and plenty of times before that too.
It isn’t sabotage or anything like it. It isn’t trying to win a pissing competition either. It’s sheer incompetence and negligence. From people paid unimaginable sums of money to do one job. Time they started doing it.

Apt title for your leader, Bobby. I’m still greetin’ aboot Kyogo.😢😫😩
I took a peek at a few highlight clips of the Rennes game. I was curious to see what Kyogo was stepping into, and how he fared. The wee man was substituted after 66 minutes, and I felt really sorry for him. He kept making his usual runs, but no one found him in any of the clips I watched. I had intended to post a clip on here, but couldn’t find one showing him touching the ball at all.
I think Rennes are in trouble, and it is just amazing that they took 3 points. Strasbourg ran all over them, missed umpteen chances, and their goalie Samba made some superb saves.
Rennes won in the last minute when an overhit corner was met beyond the far post by an unmarked forward who stroked the ball home first time.
The game was played at a very fast pace, and Strasbourg had quite a few large, pacy, athletic players who constantly troubled the Rennes defence.
Final word, I am all for women advancing in any profession they wish to follow. The ref looked like the lady who awarded two soft penalties against us in Madrid, but I can’t be bothered checking to confirm that. In any case, she was diabolical today, much to the frustration of the Strasbourg players, 2 of whom were booked for dissent.

Bobby
Great summary as per usual.
The countdown is well under way, and still hope everything is actually in place, and only playing into this SKY transfer deadline day nonsense?
Regardless, we may well be only looking at filling the 2 places available within our CL squad?
But still not clear what positions they could be, let alone who the players could be.
Looking at how Rodgers sets out his 20man SPFL match day squad, I can’t see that changing.
So expect forrest to replace yang, when he becomes fit again. That would leave a space available, but will it be a striker or another wide player?
Striker is possibly favourite, but who would be first choice between Maeda and jota, when he gets fully fit?
Still wouldn’t say a loan deal for Tierney is completely dead either imo?
If not Tierney, then wouldn’t be certain another LB will come in.
Only because scales could possibly cover both CB and LB position from the bench, which in turn would allow possibly another midfield option to be added to the squad.
Longshot admittedly, but a backup option for calmac, or even bedding in a potential replacement for Hatate, might be a surprise on the cards, if Tierney deal isn’t on the cards?
Could be some outgoings also, with rocki, monty and Kenny looking for some game time elsewhere.
So potentially a very busy day could be in store, just hoping by the close of business, it’s to everyones satisfaction?
IQ4 – 11.59pm,
Me and the wee man thought the best (Quality) moment of the game was Arne’s amazing pass to Daizen to set up Jota’s big comeback.
His amazing passing ability has been instrumental in some of our best moves this season.
This Bhoy is a Rolls Royce of a player!
Kasper – Mostly spectating all day.
Tony the tiger – Rarely let’s us down. Always ends a game battered, bruised and dirty ..and that’s his favourite kinda day!
Carpet- Slippers – Makes some difference when he is there. Really wish we had a Carter-Vickers cloning machine!
Trusty – Great athlete but worryingly has a mistake a game in him. Needs to be more switched on.
Taylor – No matter what other attributes a Tic player may have, you cannot give up possession as consistently as he does!
Calmac – Joins a select group to play 500 games for his club …he may have played 499 better games lol.
Reo – Brilliant most of the game. Reo just has brilliant vision, technical ability and the ability to pull off the things he tries.
Luke – Effort, movement, dig and passing ability, he showed all his good attributes yesterday.
Nicky – Apart from one sublime moment when he was just offside, I thought he had one of his quieter days.
Adam – Turning into a proper Celtic no9! Glad he is 6’2′ and built like a cruiser weight. Great movement all day.
Maeda, Man of the match. If he doesn’t have a clue what he is doing next, can’t very well expect defenders to! 😊 Get him tied down forever!!
Subs : Jota, Jota, Jota! So positive when he came on. If we manage to bring in a Griff-Hooper type of goal poacher, we are going to be lethal from middle to front.
Arne – Me and the wee guy have been saying it since we watched his first YT video, this Bhoy is on his way to top class status.
Scales – Solid enough. Still a better left back for me.
Bernie – Looking forward to seeing him link up with his countryman. A class act!
Yang – Sorry son, I’m just not feeling it. Way too lightweight and has a poor first touch for a wide player!
Man of the season at the half-way stage – Brendan Rodgers!
The Referee made his up his mind yesterday morning that he wasn’t using his cards, so he just left them in the house!
AGAIN !! We have 81% possession but somehow still manage to commit nearly twice the number of fouls the opposition do! It’s some fuckn anomoly that!
When the ref let go the high tackle on Tony, i told the wee man none of them are getting booked today
At we ever going to highlight- Question this!?
Hearing our interest in Lennon Miller is real.
Good read thanks BMCUWPS,
“You said a bad driver was only safe until she met another bad driver? Well, I met another bad driver, didn’t I?”
The above quote from The Great Gatsby comes to mind when we enter the dreaded Transfer Windows.
It’s over 45 years since I first came across Fitzgerald’s genius in secondary school but it aptly fits Brendan’s patchy track record and indecision at Leicester and Liverpool. And our legendary slow paced negotiations.
A case of two bad drivers meeting with a tragic, predictable outcome?
Anyway,
You are right about Mathias Kvistgaarden. We’ve been interested in him since August of 2023.
It was reported that we bid £4m for the player but were rejected and quoted £7.5m by Brøndby.
That was Brendan’s first window. Mark Lawwell was running recruitment.
Mathias is a teammate of Matt O’Reilly. They played at Under 21 level for Denmark. I’m hoping the tip came via Matt or at least he had confirmed the player’s potential.
At the time of our initial interest Kvistgaarden would of been firmly in the project category.
He was 21 and scored 10 goals in 37 appearances the previous season.
A couple of months later in November of 2023, he’d scored 5 in 15 appearances and it was reported that we were going to try again in the January (24) window.
I don’t know if we bid or not but Adam Idah joined on loan in January of 2024. I didn’t see any reports of bids during that period.
We made changes to our recruitment structure in March of 2024, Mark Lawwell left.
I’ve no idea if we tried again for the player last summer.
Mathias has scored 10 goals in 15 league games, so far this season. 14 goals in 22 games, in all competitions.
We are now apparently now prepared to pay £12m – £14m for the player.
I wonder what the reaction would of been if we’d paid £7.5m for a 21 year old ‘Mark Lawwell project’ with 10 goals in 37 games in 2023?
I don’t think we’ll ever know what went on after August 2023 and who decided whether or not to bid subsequently.
Like many of our targets, this lad has been in our thoughts for a long time.
This Window perhaps highlights our need for a Director of Football?
Like most supporters, I don’t know exactly what went on but on many levels there appear to be failings at a planning and strategic level.
Coaching is a full time commitment, especially with the amount of football played. We really need someone, with experience, directly responsible for coordinating our onboarding and exiting of players.
Mathias’ stats…

Have a great day everyone.
Fingers crossed for today.
Johnno
Forrest and Yang are both part of the euro squad already. Forrest is home grown. Jota fir kyogo and still 2 places up for grabs.
Wonder which players we will sign today as we look at what’s left from agents punts.
KT.
Kvistgaarden.
Jota on 5 year deal
+ Miller now or in summer.
Would constitute a brilliant window!
Oops misread your spfl squad for euro squad johnno. Apologies
Great article Bobby. We saw the real SPL yesterday. The officials were appalling. In nearly 60 years of watching Celtic I can’t recall in a non Hun game, a challenge as bad as the one on Ralston go unpunished. Bloke was totally high and out of control. Straight red in any civilised country. Hope the window ends well but not holding my breath.
The ref yesterday was Callum Scott, never seen or heard of him before. His performance was shocking, looked like someone from the junior league learning his trade, the Tony assault being an example of his incompetence!
Morning
Pretty good assessment of the game to which I can add little more than a correction- Kuhn’s was the 2nd to be disallowed. At the game the consensus was that he looked offside anyway- the earlier disallowed og seemed more of a mystery- but seeing the Kuhn effort again it looks bloody close. The officiating throughout was atrocious- from the moment very early on when a corner was given to Motherwell that should have been a goal kick for it was plain this was going to be a game when the officials would be a worry.
I’d be quite surprised (operative word is ‘quite’) if we sign nobody today but I doubt we’ll sign players of a type we need. The striker situation may have an element of ‘events dear boy’ about it when it came to the timing of Rennes’ move for Kyogo but the left back situation I’m less sanguine about. Let’s leave it there. We do not seem to be interested in a midfield anchor so we won’t be signing one.
I hope we have a good day.
Jimbo
One of those games yesterday where you know that we are well in control, but one mistake can screw everything, so not as relaxing a watch as it should have been. Great to see Jota back on the wing.
As for the referee….both Reo and Tony got stamped on right in front of the ref, nothing given, and I lost count of the number of sly follow throughs after the player had played a pass.
Transfer deadline day today, not sure that it’s going to be worth waiting for. I hope I am pleasantly surprised.
Have a great day whatever you’re all doing.
Good morning, friends.
Ach there’s still nearly 14 hours left to get some players signed! There is of course Nother deadline that falls 2 hours earlier and I’m more confident of being happy with that one – SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

What if the real market when deals must be sealed is today?
Everything preceding is a pocketful of mumbles such as promises because that is the case.
Even KT deal has been in offing for a while yet is out of Celtic’s control to seal.
A better understanding of the market is needed to provide a sense of balance when criticising.
600k rejected for Cummings from West Ham, they will get him on a free, and we will get nothing
Couple of things I noticed yesterday outside of the officiating.
Idah for some reason never actually looked happy when scoring or when the og went in and was disallowed. He was definitely offside when receiving the ball prior to his dribble at the byeline. That was why its disallowed imo.
Is this his nature or does he know something. Didnt affect his attitude to the game but seemed strange.
Also noticed someone on a blog putting 2+2 making 5 when pointing out a Vistajet arrival today from Faro where Bronby are currently training. Its on FR24 Enroute as I type.
Auldheid
We have known for months that Kyogo and Valle were for the off.
We should have had replacements lined up and ready to sign.
We have been linked the Danish striker for the last 18 months and made an offer then of £4m. They now want £12m .
Why are we fkn about , instead of moving on to the next target.
In the period leading up to the Well equaliser our midfield where anywhere but midfield!
McGregor, Hatate,McCowan three penny dainties!
That needs sorted out I’m thinking and it was, but I’m not sure when or how, possible a reminder to the geographical challenged of the location of midfield.
After that the familiar pattern emerged that saw 3 points added to the total.
The Ref is a wrong un and needs watching.
Engles gets pushed over and grabs ball for free kick and Well get the foul!
The push on CCV ignored. Celtic have to ask Collum to review the ref’s performance.
Hello Bada,
Would Daniel Cumming’s summer move to West Ham not go to a tribunal?

Jota for Kyogo looks at least no reduction in forward player quality.
There is a case reading SC since NY that Kyogo had gone off the boil
Just another beef without substance imo.

Mibbe he is still embarrassed about his full length knee slide for missing a one on one with the keeper in young boys game 🤣
Auldbhoy67
The Idah touch and turn that led to the own goal was a fantastic bit of play from him.
It was right in front of where I was sitting.
Never looked offside to me , will have to watch highlights to see.
I thought he had a great game.
Auldheid
I would actually say Kyogo had been off it for about 18months.
Maybe it’s just me,if Idah is walking about in a huff,as we are looking at bringing in another striker, he can GTF,can’t even smile when he scores or the team scores
Bada:
Probably expecting his goal to be chopped off!
AULDHEID
And yet other clubs seem to cope very well with the window. By your reckoning,we should maybe reduce the transfer windows to one day in August and one in January.
Get real on this one. Your comment on the subject is utter tripe,excuse-making for the same people who do the same thing time and time again. It is completely unacceptable, given the problems we have now and are nailed-on to have again in the summer.
And probably on a biannual basis for years to come, same as in years gone by.

===
I rest my case. 🙂
This stuff about being weaker or not good enough for next level.
Only exists if we go looking for it.
Why do we do that?
To confirm a long held core belief that The Board are incompetent and nothing will change that no matter what the reality of modern transfer dealings.
Of course the bloody price goes up at the close of play.
That’s why deals are not sealed well in advance. It’s easier for Celtic to sell as they set the price but a different story when it comes to buying where the other clubs, players and agents not Celtic are in charge.
I mean that’s the frigging market Celtic are in.
I’ll say again.
Enjoy what is, what isn’t doesn’t exist and how will being weaker be measured.
What is wrong with the level we currently are trying to meet?
Where in transfer priorities does beefing up midfield come.
That is a question to ask BR as it surely is in his interests to see it happen.
BMCUW
Are other clubs operating in same market?
Any examples that stand comparison?
Auldheid…I think you’re being deliberately obtuse. If we were after a player and it hit a snag, of course everything should be done to resolve and complete a deal but if that proves impossible it is incumbent on the Club to move on. The way I see it is we continually drag our heels when it comes to spending but are happy to sell (too) quickly to bring in the lolly! Also, I think Brendan is on the verge of feeling the same way as he did when we signed Shved, his frustration becoming more and more evident even if he isn’t directly saying what his face is showing!

With respect we all have our views on reality and mine is no less valid than yours.
I’m not making excuses I’m giving reasons why I think things are as they are.
Saying it is to excuse the Board avoidschecking out the reasons I put forward.
Would you prefer Celtic stock up the squad earlier with players other clubs are happy to lose to say the Board are doing a good job?
They make mistakes but what football club doesn’t in the real world?

Move on where that is an improvement on the player lost?
Who is to say that is not already the process, I thought it was.
The assumption is there is a supply of players good enough to sign for Celtic and willing to do so.
If thought provoking is being obtuse then guilty.
As being happy to sell I set out why it is easier for Celtic or any club to sell.
Do you disagree with the underlying reason?
What we make of sales is that it’s Celtic weakening the team because that is the narrative since I was a kid.

I asked Deep Seek (the Chinese AI app competing with a load of others from the US) to name the contenders to replace Kyogo today. The reply was instant & comprehensive:
Certainly! While I can’t predict the exact transfer targets or preferences of Glasgow Celtic, I can suggest some potential contenders based on their profile, suitability for Celtic’s style of play, and availability. Here’s my ordered list of potential strikers Celtic could consider:
—
### 1. **Adam Hložek (Bayer Leverkusen)**
– **Why?** A versatile forward who can play as a striker or winger, Hložek has excellent technical ability, physicality, and goal-scoring instincts. At 22, he fits Celtic’s model of developing young talent.
– **Feasibility:** Leverkusen might be open to a loan or sale if the price is right.
—
### 2. **Luis Muriel (Atalanta)**
– **Why?** A proven goal scorer with experience in Serie A and European competitions, Muriel could bring immediate quality and leadership to Celtic’s attack.
– **Feasibility:** At 32, he might be available for a reasonable fee, and Celtic could offer him a key role.
—
### 3. **Iké Ugbo (Troyes, on loan from Genk)**
– **Why?** Ugbo has experience in British football (Chelsea academy, loans in England) and has shown promise in Ligue 1. He’s a strong, mobile striker who could adapt quickly to the Scottish Premiership.
– **Feasibility:** Likely affordable and eager for regular playing time.
—
### 4. **André Silva (RB Leipzig)**
– **Why?** A clinical finisher with experience in top leagues (Bundesliga, La Liga), Silva could be a marquee signing. He’s struggled for consistency at Leipzig, which might make him available.
– **Feasibility:** A loan deal could be possible, but wages might be an issue.
—
### 5. **Kevin Denkey (Cercle Brugge)**
– **Why?** A rising star in the Belgian Pro League, Denkey has been in excellent form this season. He’s young, dynamic, and fits Celtic’s attacking style.
– **Feasibility:** Likely affordable, but competition for his signature could be fierce.
—
### 6. **Alfredo Morelos (Free Agent)**
– **Why?** A controversial but proven option in Scottish football, Morelos knows the league well and could hit the ground running. His physicality and goal-scoring record make him a viable short-term option.
– **Feasibility:** As a free agent, he’s a low-risk signing, though his disciplinary record might be a concern.
—
### 7. **Myron Boadu (AS Monaco)**
– **Why?** A young, pacey striker with potential, Boadu has struggled for consistency at Monaco but could thrive in a less demanding league like the Scottish Premiership.
– **Feasibility:** A loan deal might be possible, giving Celtic a low-risk option.
—
### 8. **Lyle Taylor (Free Agent)**
– **Why?** A short-term option with experience in British football, Taylor could provide depth and experience while Celtic search for a long-term replacement.
– **Feasibility:** As a free agent, he’s a low-cost option.
—
### Final Thoughts:
Celtic should prioritize a striker who can adapt quickly to their high-tempo, attacking style of play. A mix of youth and experience would be ideal, with players like Hložek or Muriel offering immediate impact, while Denkey or Boadu could be long-term investments.
Let me know if you’d like further analysis!

Of course the bloody price goes up at the close of play.
mibbe we shoulda held onto kyogo bernabei palma etc until the last day
Who actually calls the shots at Celtic Park, particularly on transfer deadline day ? There are only two days in the year when it has to be yes or not, for both recruiting and offloading . Tomorrow is too late.
Despite the fact that Michael Nicholson is CEO, at the top of executive the tree, I don’t believe for one moment that these decisions are his call. He is just a patsy for………………..someone else . And Nicholson is happy to be that patsy, very well paid with a guaranteed annual bonus into the bargain.
Rodgers is clearly more than a tad frustrated at the moment. All his requested targets have been given the straight no, or, not yet, by one of the suits.
This is no longer a sequel to a previous movie, deadline day at Celtic is now a franchise. Fast & Furious it is most certainly not.

Anyone point me to the proof of Brendan’s supposed frustrations, I seem to have missed that completely.
BAD…nothing concrete, mate! Just a feeling that when he’s been asked he says the right things but I don’t think he necessarily believes what he’s saying. He definitely isn’t saying we’re working ot bring in a striker, or a left back or whatever. It’s all too vague for me but as I say nothing concrete! Here’s yesterday’s interview…
