The Crying Game

Morning,all.

I’m on review duties today instead of our usual MAHE Monday missive. And I have to say that despite a blistering start, that first half left me distinctly underwhelmed. It all started so well, a first minute goal with Maeda climbing to meet an excellent cross from Big T. And that was as good as it got for a while.

In fairness to our side, we weren’t getting any favours from the officials on or off the park. In fact,we had two goals ruled marginally offside in the second half, and I remain unconvinced on either. Or on the validity of the Well equaliser, come to that. But it doesn’t alter the fact that, after that quick opener, we really struggled to get much going in that first half.

To the extent in fact that Motherwell started to look more likely than us, and proved it midway through the first half with a dodgy equaliser. After some CalMac carelessness in midfield, the ball was swung over from the left, which CCV rose to clear. An obvious push in the back made sure that he missed it, and as the ball ricocheted around the goalmouth, Armstrong of Well, who had strongarmed CCV out of the way in the first place, score a debut equaliser for the home side.

This,I might add, is a guy on loan from Carlisle United. Literally the worst side in the EFL, bottom of Tier 4. Can’t get a game for them but scores against us, and was a handful throughout. Inexcusable.

We were struggling to do much, although we did create the occasional chance at the other end. And on the half hour mark, Idah struck to put us ahead. A wonderful ball from Maeda on the left, across the six yard box for Idah to give us the lead. It’s almost as though he feels liberated by knowing that he is the current first choice, instead of having to prove himself every week from the bench.

The second half was a vast improvement from us, and Motherwell barely got a look-in. Shortly after the restart, we had the ball in the net again, Kühn this time. Harshly ruled out by Beaton on VAR. Worse was to come later in the half when Idah had one chopped off in even more debatable circumstances. But even as we searched for that elusive third, I don’t think we were in danger of losing an equaliser. And when Jota arrived late on the scene, all hail the conquering hero, it was almost in the stars.

Scoring on his third debut, and right in front of our fans. In the last minute of added time too. An iconic image for sure as he raised his arm in salute to the fans, then ran back to restart the game while on the verge of tears. He has had a torrid time since he left us, and we can only hope that his cameo sub appearance and late goal are a sign of things to come.

We now move on to either Manic Monday or Groundhog Day. Time will tell. In my opinion, we have made a complete mess off this window in much the same way that we so nearly screwed up the summer one. We knew Kyogo was offski, and made no move to secure a replacement before selling him. We knew Taylor wasn’t for signing a new contract any time soon, and that Como were courting Barcelona’s Valle. And that these two factors seriously complicated issues at left back. We also knew that it was unlikely that Arteta would allow Tierney to leave last month-yet no immediate move was made for a left back.

Nor a hard and mobile defensive mid in the mould of Big Vic.

I dunno about you folks, but I’m fed up being told how well-run a club we are when we continually screw up on transfers. And when our No 1 target up front is a guy we first looked at 18 months ago-and were quoted €4m-whose value has apparently trebled, I’d say that there are certain people charged with bringing players to the club who should be nowhere near the role.

There will be more on this particular topic later in the week, but BR must be getting mightily miffed at it all. Or deja-vu all over again to the 2018/19 season. Yep, we won the treble that season. But we had to do it without our manager. Lessons need to be learned from this, lessons that should have been learned six years ago and plenty of times before that too.

It isn’t sabotage or anything like it. It isn’t trying to win a pissing competition either. It’s sheer incompetence and negligence. From people paid unimaginable sums of money to do one job. Time they started doing it.

Auldheid…I shoulda said uncharacteristically obtuse rather than deliberately! Nevertheless, whilst offering an explanation of why you think the Club does its business in a certain way the reality is that we seldom are visibly proactive in our recruitment and seem to take such a long time to get our ducks in a row. Even you must admit it is a frustration.
By the way, I hope your recovery is progressing and you get back to your forgiving self rather than the cantankerous c### you’ve been the last few posts! 🤣😂🤣

McCaff’s clip on Brendan led me to this clip of Jordan Henderson’s press interview after Ajax beat Feyenoord 2-1. Compulsive viewing.

As background, Ajax were trying to punt him to Monaco before the game as they are struggling for funds. Henderson did not ask for a transfer.

The Dutch journalists are persistent and rude, but Henderson does a great job fighting his corner. I’ve never really heard him talk, but he is pretty articulate, and quite obviously a determined character.

McCaff,

I agree that Armstrong looked a handful for both CCV and Trusty. He clearly fouled CCV but he took his goal well.

I know it is true that you need to assess players over a few games, not just one. This is particularly true for players like Armstrong. I would add in Murray at Dundee and Olusanya at St M….each can be impressive in mediocre teams, but over a season…who knows?

If Celtic strike out on a striker, lb, and winger this window, what effect will it have on your support?

After the Mark Lawwell summer fiasco, I cancelled my CelticTV and stopped watching games. After about a week, I started looking for Celtic results! I signed up again when the new season started. My excuse was we got rid of ML.

I see no acceptable pathway through this addiction. Is there a Celtic Anonymous?

I would love visibility, it might stop all the made up fears being sounded but I doubt it. Just supply more stuff to complain about.

I’m actually enjoying being cantankerous, perhaps the sheer unimportance we attach to football staring at me has been a wake up call.

All I ask is for folk to think outside past conditioning.

Be open to the possibility that what happens is not a deliberate attempt to wind supporters up.

Exactly.

And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we’ll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow.

If Celtic are being badly run why do folk turn up and as long as they do why should Celtic spend more than they have to under current strategy.

In my book it’s put up or shut up.

I tried putting up in my own way.

Got more support from Aberdeen supporters.

However we did hold all the cards re kyogo (as do brondby for example) but I suspect the tie in with jota complicated any wish to hold out.

Sorry but until I know what took place over the window in more detail I refuse to pass judgement.

We simply cannot arrive at the reasons based on failed expectations that take no account of the circumstances that prevented them happening.

The one thing we can be certain of in life is that there is no certainty.

What I’d like to see is a report on recruitment activity during the year at the AGM.

When did it start.

Who set the criteria for each position.

The affordability wage range for each position based on a European and Global median.

How were players identified? Is there a database to give a starting point.

Who decides whmeteet the criteria to then be pursued.

Clubs approached.

How often.

Reasons interests dropped.

What helped secure those who did sign.

Was final decision on who to sign a personal or collective one?

Under what guidance?

Now that process to me would be an indication of competence or otherwise.

Will it ever happen? Not as long as there is no will on the part of the support to make it so.

Otherwise it’s all Platos Cave.

Arguing over shadows we project on our inner wall.

Churn is the silent killer of businesses. It’s the slow leak, the constant drip of customers slipping away, of users drifting off to find something new. The attrition eats away at your growth, forcing you to keep running to stay in place.
The thing about churn is that it’s often hidden. It’s not like a crisis that grabs your attention. It’s a slow, quiet process that happens in the background. Churn can present opportunity. Like a snake shedding its skin, replacing components of a system is a natural part to keeping it healthy. New parts can improve functionality.
But here’s what’s counterintuitive: some churn is healthy. New employees bring new ideas; new customers bring new opportunities. Replacing what is worn out creates new opportunities. Some churn is inevitable. Too much can kill you.

Oh Mcaff

I’ve never stopped forgiving. 🙂

Just getting more frustrated at the failure to recognise the difference between what we belive to be so and what is so.

If I didn’t forgive I would not keep visiting SC would I?

Get accused of Board sycophancy when I treat them in the same way I try to treat everyone – with love.

Real love has no need to forgive anyone as it refrains from judging.

What does 1 Corinthians 13 say about love?

  • Love is patient: Love is not irritable or resentful.
  • Love is kind: Love is full of service to others.
  • Love is selfless: Love does not insist on its own way.
  • Love is not self-seeking: Love does not keep a record of wrongs.
  • Love is not arrogant: Love does not boast or envy.
  • Love is not rude: Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth.
  • Love bears all things: Love believes, hopes, and endures all things.
  • Love never ends: Love is the greatest of the three things that will last forever: faith, hope, and love.

Fundamentally (and I might be mental) Celtic were founded from love and my hope is that as Celtic supporters we follow the above path to unity rather than the path of fear that divides.

That saddens me as much as it frustrates.
It could be so different if we explored our feelings and the thoughts that creat them and change them.
Understanding what real love requires is a good starting point.

  1. signing someone …
  2. knowing there wont be any more signings today, they have decided to get the hell out of dodge
  3. they have both said, ‘sod this, we do great work and get no credit from the ungrateful mob. Fuck it, we quit’.
  4. they are secretly a couple and are away for a romantic weekend.
  5. They are off to a lodge meeting …
  6. they are flying off to pay tribute to Trump …

I rest my case. We paid more for Idah than we should, but how much pressure to buy him came from supporters desperate for a signing?

In any case if a few bob has been made from sales then the overall transaction cost is nuetral.

It’s how it works with totality costs, not cost in isolation to justify a specific point.

Auldheid…we are all entitled to form opinions based on how we see things, even if two people have diametrically opposing viewpoints! Yes, until we have complete access to all information it is difficult and that is why we look to the past to try to understand the present and predict what will happen in the futrue. So, apart from Ange’s 3 pre-January signings we are currently, apparently, treading the same path as we’ve done for years. And, incidentally, it has Lawell Sr and DD’s fingerprints all over it. But, and there’s always a but, I’m still of the opinion that we will sign one or two new players tonight.

As you well know, there is only one reality, and that’s the here and now.
A transfer window should be involving planning upon the future within a club imo?

Don’t buy into the money in the bank to much, as it’s value upon the field for ourselves that counts for myself anyway.
For example is paying 3 times more for Engels than Paulo, means you get a three times better player?
Don’t think, so it’s all about value a player brings to our overall squad.

Yet here we are, facing our biggest 2 legged tie in a couple of weeks, in many a long year.
But look at the squad potentially in place, with the usual game structure we have had in place throughout this season to date.

Attacking, without Maeda available.

Jota Idah kuhn
Yang Kenny forrest ( if fit)

Maeda offers a bit of flexibility, for the second leg, even if unclear as in what capacity regarding a position or even role.
Doesn’t cover up the 5 sub rule in place, where changes are usually made within the attacking options, but we are struggling badly to even consider such changes within a massive game imo?

Midfield

Hatate Calmac Engels
Paulo McCowan (likely subs)

Again McCowan hasn’t been given much game time, to date at CL level. And still playing Russian roulette on the potential injuries occurring in such a vital area of the pitch for ourselves.

Defence

Taylor Trusty CCV Johnston
Scales Rocki Murray Ralston

Hardly inspiring, with Scales having to cover a couple of positions. Looking more likely as a potential sub for Taylor within games, as things stand. Yet panic stations will set in again, if injuries should occur to our defensive set up, and that’s with the Taylor conundrum still in operation.

So overall sabotage may be bit to strong of a word at present. But fail to see how we could be regarded as an improvement in strength, within the overall look of our squad either imo.

And lets not forget, that the best part of the players mentioned, could well be required and dependant upon for CL qualifiers.
This with the slow process of clubs finalising accounts with the 31st June in mind, which usually means a slow start to the summer window.

Thought, I wouldn’t class ourselves at panic stations by any means.
It still doesn’t cover up the conduct the powers to be, have shown towards our support during this window imo.
Concerning bordering on anger is where I find myself at present.
Which isn’t helped by failing to understand why we should be in such a position within our club whatsoever?
