The Crying Game

Morning,all.

I’m on review duties today instead of our usual MAHE Monday missive. And I have to say that despite a blistering start, that first half left me distinctly underwhelmed. It all started so well, a first minute goal with Maeda climbing to meet an excellent cross from Big T. And that was as good as it got for a while.

In fairness to our side, we weren’t getting any favours from the officials on or off the park. In fact,we had two goals ruled marginally offside in the second half, and I remain unconvinced on either. Or on the validity of the Well equaliser, come to that. But it doesn’t alter the fact that, after that quick opener, we really struggled to get much going in that first half.

To the extent in fact that Motherwell started to look more likely than us, and proved it midway through the first half with a dodgy equaliser. After some CalMac carelessness in midfield, the ball was swung over from the left, which CCV rose to clear. An obvious push in the back made sure that he missed it, and as the ball ricocheted around the goalmouth, Armstrong of Well, who had strongarmed CCV out of the way in the first place, score a debut equaliser for the home side.

This,I might add, is a guy on loan from Carlisle United. Literally the worst side in the EFL, bottom of Tier 4. Can’t get a game for them but scores against us, and was a handful throughout. Inexcusable.

We were struggling to do much, although we did create the occasional chance at the other end. And on the half hour mark, Idah struck to put us ahead. A wonderful ball from Maeda on the left, across the six yard box for Idah to give us the lead. It’s almost as though he feels liberated by knowing that he is the current first choice, instead of having to prove himself every week from the bench.

The second half was a vast improvement from us, and Motherwell barely got a look-in. Shortly after the restart, we had the ball in the net again, Kühn this time. Harshly ruled out by Beaton on VAR. Worse was to come later in the half when Idah had one chopped off in even more debatable circumstances. But even as we searched for that elusive third, I don’t think we were in danger of losing an equaliser. And when Jota arrived late on the scene, all hail the conquering hero, it was almost in the stars.

Scoring on his third debut, and right in front of our fans. In the last minute of added time too. An iconic image for sure as he raised his arm in salute to the fans, then ran back to restart the game while on the verge of tears. He has had a torrid time since he left us, and we can only hope that his cameo sub appearance and late goal are a sign of things to come.

We now move on to either Manic Monday or Groundhog Day. Time will tell. In my opinion, we have made a complete mess off this window in much the same way that we so nearly screwed up the summer one. We knew Kyogo was offski, and made no move to secure a replacement before selling him. We knew Taylor wasn’t for signing a new contract any time soon, and that Como were courting Barcelona’s Valle. And that these two factors seriously complicated issues at left back. We also knew that it was unlikely that Arteta would allow Tierney to leave last month-yet no immediate move was made for a left back.

Nor a hard and mobile defensive mid in the mould of Big Vic.

I dunno about you folks, but I’m fed up being told how well-run a club we are when we continually screw up on transfers. And when our No 1 target up front is a guy we first looked at 18 months ago-and were quoted €4m-whose value has apparently trebled, I’d say that there are certain people charged with bringing players to the club who should be nowhere near the role.

There will be more on this particular topic later in the week, but BR must be getting mightily miffed at it all. Or deja-vu all over again to the 2018/19 season. Yep, we won the treble that season. But we had to do it without our manager. Lessons need to be learned from this, lessons that should have been learned six years ago and plenty of times before that too.

It isn’t sabotage or anything like it. It isn’t trying to win a pissing competition either. It’s sheer incompetence and negligence. From people paid unimaginable sums of money to do one job. Time they started doing it.

If PL and DD are solely responsible for the policy that all the Board agree with and that policy leaves final recruitment decisions with them then that is their fingerprint.

However unless what Celtic say about recruitment on their web site is a tissue of lies then PL and DD do not have that ultimate authority.

Which is where we end up when unwillinging to think different. Mistrust.

Clearly the majority of the support don’t care as long as a winning team is on the park.

The music goes round and around.

The departure board in that pic is genuine.
Thoughts:

If Pistol Pete is accompanying Brendan, that puts paid to the theory that he has a non-executive role.

Why on earth are they making a flight? It’s hard to do business on a plane. Shouldn’t they be on Skype, or Teams, or on the phone and fax sealing deals?

Schlupp is excess to requirements now Palace have Chilwell. You see Palace do things the right way round – get the new guy in, THEN punt the old guy, who averages 8 minutes a game, so he must be REALLY fit.😱

Surely to God they won’t follow up with a short term loan for Ings, who can hardly move now, far less score?

I know no more than you do about the nature of reality.

Your reality, like mine, is a product/projection of your thinking based on past experience just like mime.

Since no two past experiences are the same then reality cannot be the same for everyone.

Additionally the past is not the present and factors that dictated past decisions (like new CL Format) can change the present.

On both counts I disagree with your opening premise.

No point going further.

Bemused by Brendan and the Sharp suited man being in the Big Smoke ay the eleventh hour.
Possible multi-tasking?

Machiavellian stab in the dark here – Is Pistol Pete present because Brendan has suggested to the Great Mustachioed One that Nicholson simply isn’t cutting it? Or is it because the CEO is manning the phones at Celtic Park on another deal altogether? Hopefully the latter.

UPDATE: I’m told Jeffrey Schlupp is keen to join Celtic.

Celtic and #CPFC are negotiating how much of his wages Hoops will cover. He’s out of contract in the summer.

He can play LB & LW – 2 positions Celtic want to fill.

If clubs can agree a deal, a London medical can begin.

Disagree, as you seem to have forgotten about the choice of changes involved.

Decisions of the past can’t be changed.
Hopefully you can adapt to the changes to deal with the present.
And looking forward, then improve upon the failings within the changes required imo.

Seen nothing to suggest that such an operation exists within our club, and debatable that it ever has been.
More like a make it up as you go along exists, hence more unrest if it should go badly wrong?

Apparently BR PL and MN were together on London flight.

As CEO with contract finalising experience that makes sense.

The thing is who has the authority to sign on behalf of Celtic?

Did PLs predecessor Chairman Bankier have it?

Did PL as CEO have it?

It not being a one man decision aligns with the recruitment process with levels of authority set out on Celtic Web site.

We’ll see.

In what way is MN not cutting it? That’s going too far.

In what area is he not cutting it?

I found him a very reasonable individual to deal with, open to persuasion in very difficult circumstances for him under the direction of duplicity that he had to follow under the policy Celtic adopted to minimise the damage to them and Scottish football where Celtic ply their trade.

I’ve a lot more respect for MN than I have for PL and others with a high Celtic social media profile who frankly were hostile to attempts at reform backed by PL.

We’re I agree with you is a much greater degree of transparency on transfer activity is needed.

I set out some suggestions earlier but to make them real here is a way.

Draft a resolution making a brief case of benefits of transparency on recruitment.

Set out the various steps and parameters that would lead to it.

Set out what a report to AGM would cover.

Put it up on SC for suggestions.

Redraft and publicise over social media and/or get CST to put to shareholders with a final version to sign.
If more than 100 do sign up send to Comp Sec at a known email address to consider adopting.

That is how a new reality is created as opposed to ongoing verbal dissatisfaction at the social media led reality we all live in.

Hi Auldheid:
I have no doubt that Nicholson is a reasonable individual to deal with. And the fact that you respect him is good enough for me.

I did mention that I was giving a Machiavellian stab in the dark – it was a complete guess as to why Pistol Pete was accompanying Brendan. Given his limp, anemic performance since the start of the window, Nicholson is no driven, pro-active, aggressive, all action get up and go chief executive. The problem is that fans are given zero information from the club they pay fortunes into, as to why it takes to the last day of the window to jump into action.

Whatever happens today, it defies belief that it can come close to making the squad stronger than a month ago. The planning and process is an incoherent, illogical mess, and the perception is that it is spurred by panic. To me, and many others, that is clear cut executive failure, regardless of how nice a guy he is. Whatever he is doing in London, I wonder why he needs Lawwell looking over his shoulder? That diminishes his authority immediately.
Cheers,
Iniquitous IV😊

This explains why PL might be involved. It depends on what is viewed as significant and is a natural safeguard at any responsible Board.

Celtic Director Responsibilities.

The Board of Directors has legal and financial responsibility for the affairs of the Company.
The Board delegates day-to day operational responsibility to the executive Directors, the Chief Executive Officer, Michael Nicholson and Chief Financial Officer, Christopher McKay.

The Board as a whole monitors Company performance against budgets and a rolling five year business plan as well as making specific decisions on key areas of the Company’s business, risk management and setting future strategy.
The Board operates, through the Audit Committee, a comprehensive set of internal financial controls, which are reported on regularly by the internal auditor and reviewed each year by the external auditors.

There are some matters which only the Board can decide upon including, for example, the appointment of directors and auditors, the payment of dividends and the approval of budgets and interim and annual results. Decisions on significant contracts and expenditure above certain levels, also require Board approval.

It policy nothing more nothing less.

Standing operating procedure in an y well run business, but open to any bias that confirms an already held core belief.

Of course as a Board Member PL will be in a position to influence the policy but he hardly has an outstanding past record on recruitment that saw BR leave to provide any more authority to his thinking over other Board Members or is everyone else at Celtic puppets?

2 hours to go. I’m having difficulty digesting the fact that Celtic officials on the last day travelled to London solely to clinch a 6 month loan deal for a 32 year old reserve fullback.

Is that it? That is the sum total of our ambition? There’s something else, right? They’re playing mind games? Are we supposed to be reconciled to watching Yang fill in for injured, exhausted or suspended forwards for the rest of the season, someone who has scored one in nearly 60 appearances?

We have known for months that Kyogo was for the off, and we are supposed to accept utter and abysmal failure to augment our strike force?

We can’t even rollover our excess revenue for transfers until the following season, so the money is useless in the bank.

If nothing happens in the next 120 minutes, I am going to be mightily pissed off.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #37 MOTHERWELL 1 CELTIC 3 (MAEDA, IDAH, JOTA)*

Good evening, friends.
A game where we played well enough in the first half but much better in the second and where one injury time moment elevated our happiness an extra notch.
Calum McGregor played his 500th game for Celtic whilst Daizen Maeda notched up his 100th and within 52 seconds opened the scoring with a Larssonesque header back across goal. Daizen is having his best season yet for us and now sits joint top of the goalscoring charts.
Celtic were comfortable without being dazzling. But some slack play in the 22nd minute saw Motherwell draw level. As the cross came into the box Carter-Vickers jumped to head and was clearly pushed by Armstrong. The ball then bounced off Trusty’s shin and Armstrong slotted it into the net. The push on CCV was soft but that’s all it needed to be to stop him getting the ball. A clear foul for me but not for the VAR.
But a few minutes later and Celtic regained the lead. Good link up play on the left saw Yang feed Hatate. Reo’s first touch played in Taylor who’s first touch crossed to Idah who’s first touch found the net. A great goal and we had our half time lead.
The second half was one way traffic towards the Motherwell goal. Twice we thought we had increased our lead but both were disallowed for very close offside calls. Adam Idah also managed a fine spin and shot but the effort came back off the post.
On the 74th minute there was an incident that I haven’t since seen anyone comment on. Engels was challenged and fell to the ground expecting a foul and so deliberately grabbed the ball. The referee disagreed and gave a foul to Motherwell for handball. It was clearly deliberate so why wasn’t Arne booked?
In the final 25 minutes Celtic made the usual substitutions including the one most of us were eagerly awaiting – Jota returned in the 65th minute, starting on the right but later moving to the left. He was equally capable on either side and, to me, didn’t look that rusty. Hopefully up to full fitness in the next 2-3 weeks.
With the game in it’s dying seconds we suddenly got our moment of the day. Engels played a fine path into Maeda and Daizen spotted Jota coming in on the far side. A great pass across the 6 yard box and Jota finished to the absolute delight of our travelling fans. And, of course he did THAT celebration. A moment that was written in the stars.
We have now played 37 games this season, winning 27, drawing 7 and losing 3. We have scored 99 and conceded 33 (domestically it’s 86-19 and in Europe it’s 13-14). Thank you so much to the 87 who voted this time around – the highest turnout since we defeated RB Leipzig back in early November. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Schmeichel: 0
Ralston: 1
Carter-Vickers: 0
Trusty: 0
Taylor*: 21
McGregor: 1
McCowan: 7
Hatate*: 28
Kuhn: 2
Idah: 72
Maeda*: 84
Engels: 0
Jota: 38
Yang: 0
Scales: 0
Bernardo: 0

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Motherwell are –
Maeda – 5 points
Idah – 4 points
Jota – 3 points
Hatate – 2 points
Taylor – 1 point

And the overall positions after 37 games played are –
58 points – Kuhn
49 points – Maeda
46 points – Hatate
45 points – Schmeichel
43 points – Engels, McGregor
41 points – Bernardo, Scales
31 points – Trusty
24 points – Kyogo
23 points – Carter-Vickers, Johnston A, McCowan
20 points – Taylor
19 points – Valle
14 points – Idah
7 points – O’Riley
4 points – Forrest, Yang
3 points – Jota, Welsh
0 points – Cummings, Holm, Johnston M., Kenny, Murray, Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley

*GOALSCORERS 2024-25*
I was asked to include a summary of our goalscorers for the season. I won’t do this after every game, but I’ll update it when we score another 10 (or so) goals.
*Goalscorers table*
16 – Kuhn, Maeda
12 – Kyogo
11– Idah
7 – Engels, Hatate, McGregor
5 – McCowan
4 – Johnston A
3 – Bernardo, Scales
1 – Carter-Vickers, Jota, Ralston, Taylor, Trusty, Yang
2 Own Goals
Total Goals – 99

Next up is a run of 4 home games in a row and I can’t remember when that last happened? We start with our rearranged league game against Dundee, postponed from last weekend. Kick off is 7.45pm on Wednesday evening. Hopefully someone scores our 100th goal before 8.30pm!
