The bare minimum

What a couple of weeks, overachieving on the pitch, rocked by a certain departure yet soon rocking to the tune of an old new arrival, bhoyed by the return of another departed hero of yesterday, qualification whilst shedding the fringe players,,the end phase of the window looked pretty straightforward.
A left back, a new striker, a central defender and ideally another midfielder.
Only one of those arrived.
The window now has a bare minimum feeling about it,,there’s the bare minimum of effort and imagination involved in bringing back an old player or recruiting a previous employee the manager worked with.
Was this the plan?

Apparently not given the knockbacks for strikers who fit our player profile,,,one a long term target known about for years, the other faced Celtic before. Their attempted captures signify the bare minimum of fresh impetus from a recently revamped scouting/recruitment department.

Celtic have not lived up to their own words this window, we didn’t emerge stronger but rather weaker in areas.
Why is the big question.
Someone official will have to answer the question of what happened but we shall only receive a stock answer with scant detail if any.
But everyone will draw their own conclusions, the nature of Celtic.
I don’t see the sense of only one recognized striker, a move which relies on Daizens versatility, and one of the two young guns stepping up sometimes.
Yet our two signings yell versatile,Jota either wing and Schlupp plays a couple of roles.
Is Brendan/Celtic looking for a slimmer squad with a lot more flexible players to plug holes?
We’re giving off that vibe.

But the window is now, and always will be, synonymous with Kyogo. Having basically been handed a 6 month notice period, Celtic couldn’t or wouldn’t reinforce the striking position with a like for like despite getting 8 figures for the wee man.
The phrase “you had one job” springs to mind. Months, not weeks or days, but months of prior knowledge failed to come with someone able to join for an acceptable fee right now? We must be one of the only clubs capable of such incompetence.
Hamfistedness others might say.

Any official plan is beyond me,,given we are back to qualifiers late summer, and tend to buy/attract based on said results,,,the summer window ain’t looking like our saviour. If anything we will lose some matchday squad members, more new faces joining putting more pressure on the existing players to step up, again.
That’s gambling, on the freshness and quality levels of the retained quality players, on the luck of the draw even, but it’s unnecessary gambling for a club that has the resources to avoid gambling but rather implement planning.
We employ people for said planning, sitting here now I’m wondering what’s the point. Depending on your own take, the qualifiers are the most important games of the season, they are for me, and given the new format and much bigger spoils I ask myself “Why do the board not see this? Why risk all that? Why not get ready now?”
Unfortunately I keep returning to an old saying “Celtic never let you dream too much!”. Once that genie is out of the bottle it’s hard to put back in, getting through the group stages with credible results helped by a couple of ten million signings has unleashed the genie. My fear now, is it’s rebottling,,just as the support starts to dream again. Just when the next level looked within grasp. Is within grasp. This team plus summer and this manager might just navigate the qualifiers, but before those games I for one would like to see a certain banner dusted off, the ‘on your heads be it’ one.

Brendan has been diplomatic, but he’s been very successful and deserves some of the spoils he captured. It’s a record turnover season, a renaissance season, he called for a replacement striker, team needs a striker, Europe calls for a striker and zip.
Aye, on their heads be it indeed.

For what it’s worth I believe both captures we’ve actually managed will be astute signings and impactful in a positive way, but at the windows conclusion Celtic walk away much in profit, more profit, when lacking in numbers on the park.
After the internal struggles of ‘24 and the sporting plus financial success those windows shall deliver, stoking the engine of the rolling train with fresh coal looked a no brainer, paddle harder and ride the wave.
Why that didn’t happen shall now be the years debate.

All fair Mike, to a degree! I’d have stood on the neck of the old Huns and gladly watched them die…but I’m not prepared to give up my love for Celtic.
None of which was my point about the transfer window, incidentally. Nor do I see them as related, although I think you probably think they are! My point is about Celtic plc seeming to lack the ambition of the manager and a large section of the support. That rankles me more than any shit about the Huns!

HHH,

Thanks for the response.

I made the point about Idah and Engels really in the context of Brendan being supported.

And the comment about buying players for £7/8m and selling for £30/40m.

Engels,

I think he has real potential and has shown in patches what we hoped for. €11m is petty cash to many of the clubs in the Top 5 league But given the boys’ performance and the price paid (he was playing in top 5 league…)I’m happy enough.

Idah,

We made our first bid for Adam on the 3rd of July last year. Several bids followed. Adam even reported late for a flight to Austria for pre-season training. The window closed on the 30th of August.

Norwich held all the cards. He’d signed a long-term deal in 2023. Adam had delivered on loan. Prior to his coming to us Norwich had turned down a bid for a loan with an option to buy from Verona. I think in the region of €3.5m.

Given his performance on loan, the price was always going to be north of that.

Norwich sat it out and extracted the best price for a young player with EPL experience. Our first bid was in the ballpark of £4-5m.

Should we have gone in with a higher initial bid?

As far as I remember Kyogo’s shoulder had flared up again in August.

Kyogo,

The manner of his departure is perhaps one of the most puzzling of a high quality, established players from our squad.

Brendan might have been better off playing his cards closer to his chest in subsequent statements about an incoming striker.

There are questions for a number of people about our scouting, target selection and assessment of the likely cost of acquisitions.

Those issues feed into our appetite to spend, ongoing costs, FSR limits, revenue generation, effect of a failure to qualify for the CL etc.

That’s me done for the day, still on holiday.

Enjoy your day.

Look out for repeated emphasis on Jota, Schlupp and KT as deflection from utter fiasco regarding a striker, either due to ineptitude or malign sabotage from a not fit for purpose Board of decrepit useless parasites.

As in most of the business world, realistic targets can be set, and better than expected targets, will possibly mean a bigger bonus package for those involved in achieving the likes.

Certainly seems to be in operation within our club, especially as a cash cow exists within it.

So have them targets set, already been matched during January?
Would say so imo, even if the league title isn’t completed yet, and another treble still in the making.

So if targets are getting hit, at earlier than anticipated in league terms.
Reaching the knockout phase of CL.
Winning at least one of the two cups available.
Why not let greed kick in and make a profit from a transfer window, to increase the amount of bonus on offer?

That isn’t the mindset of the majority of our support, despite the powers to be hitting the targets upon the pitch, at an acceptable level.
If we were offered in August, to where we currently are as a club, we would have snapped your hands for it imo?

So still a massive gap exists between how the board runs the club, and to matching the expectations of our supporters.
Yet they would claim to be delivering so will remain unchallenged also imo.

Demonstrations from our support at the situation, would possibly mean the spoilt brat attitude could be portrayed, and confirmed banning towards CL games as a result, with the backing of our board also imo?

Powers to be, especially in the footballing world, will always have ourselves over the barrel, until failure happens upon there behalf.
Even then with cash reserves available, it wouldn’t take too much to put things right either.

One word seems to be totally missing during this window, and that’s ambition, yet again.
I do believe that we had a chance of knocking bayern out of the CL.
Seems like that wasn’t upon the agenda with targets getting hit and self greed taking preference within the decision making imo?

Looking like the 2 year process of keeping things intact for the foreseeable, still seems to be in operation at present.
Can’t go into the third year with the same structure and strategies, especially as the targets are expected to rise, so less bonuses available to all concerned imo?

Looking like another unstable period before August is in store, but must admit to getting tired of the sitting on the merry go around that exists within our club.
Are we being greedy in return for looking for ambition and stability at CL level?
I don’t believe so anyway imo?

From time to time I read on Celtic blog sites that we are in an ideal place for another treble.

Let’s assume for a moment we get past Raith and Sevco get by Queens Park. How do we think we will do if we draw Sevco away in the next round? After once again witnessing our wanton, deliberate refusal to improve the squad from a position of strength, I would not be exactly brimming with confidence.

And for those who blithely say, “If Adam gets injured, we’ll just put Daezan through the middle” – the reason Brendan doesn’t see that as a solution is that it would severely weaken the left side of the team. And it won’t even be an option if Adam gets injured during the home Bayern game.

I’ve been racking my brains for some way all Celtic fans can celebrate the Interim Accounts when they are published. Any ideas?

Spot on.

I put a lot of effort into providing reason to demand change and the opposition came from within the Celtic supporting ranks.

I appreciate those who continue to provide a spectacle to watch but despair at the unwillingness to look at their own part in creating the very reality they moan about.

The Celtic support are fragmented which is just how the Board like it.

There is a level of contempt for the support that comes from DD down in terms of their intellectual capacity and until we start using our brains to take them on that will continue.

Suspicious, unforgiving, thankless mistrusting and fear filled.

The proof of the Jan steam pudding transfer window can only be measured in its eating starting Wed.

Otherwise it’s all fear driven.

As we all know by now or should, or will, that in life shit happens. Trust me. 😀

It is how we respond that matters and that in the context of Celtic is on the field of play.

So stop shitin ourselves over what isn’t and try enjoying what is.

Do you know how to do that? Start looking for reasons to be joyful in the here and now.

Just my summing up of reaction to window closing based on comments on SC.

There is plenty of joy amongst the support derived from each other. Ive been part of it and enjoyed it but not much joy for those running the club.

If wanting less division amongst the support and Board is not something joyful to aspire to then
what is wrong with that?

That surprises me.

Very true, especially within an unwinnable battle against the board.

Money gives you power, despite the greed factor involved.

Supporting a football club remains as an individual choice.
How much money an individual wants to invest regarding ST, merchandise etc etc is again an individual choice, and the powers to be totally understand that aspect within the club.

So as you say the individual choice is whether to sit in the disappointment of yesterday or look forward to the match tomorrow?

Still in the disappointment of yesterday at present, but won’t be long before the excitement of tomorrow will kick in.

That’s what you buy into as a football supporter imo.
And in return we still get a far better return than most in the same bracket, within the footballing world.

At least we have sites just as this to let off steam, even if we remain totally powerless within the prospect of change, we would like to see within the club.

Enjoy it while it remains possible, no matter how challenging it can be at times.

I dont see if as binary as you seem to: ‘sit in the disappointment of yesterday or look forward to the match tomorrow. I wont get all post structuralist on you (I’ll save that for one of Auldheid’s posts one day when I really want to wind him up!), you cant separate past from present from future.* Leaving aside the philosophy (as I promised), I will simply repeat the words of Santayana,”those who ignore the lessons of the past are doomed to repeat them”.

Without getting to deep, the past determines and is continuing to determine the present, about which many fans are said to be unhappy, at least in some material respects..

Also, if fans are unhappy about how the club is run, and particularly if that unhappiness relates to a key issue in the club, doesnt that inevitably detract from the fans’ enjoyment. Otherwise, it is not, to borrow a favourite phrase from the old blog, a series case of cognitive dissonance?

*****If however, you or someone else, is keen on going deeper on this issue, and giving your brain a good workout, Derrida’s introduction to his analysis on Marx,(Specters of Marx: The State of the Debt, the Work of Mourning and the New International) and particularly his deconstruction of the problem of past/present/future is a series mind fuck (I reread this on my recent holiday, and took me about 2 days just to get through the 2 or 3 page introduction … but once I did, it was one of those light bulb / Eureka moments, where it all sort of makes sense!

===
I’ll try to clarify.

Look for things to be grateful for and enjoy them as an alternative to being powerless to bring about the change that would lead to a Celtic united as opposed to the one divided.

Or is there no division, is it only me who sees it?

I’m the last one to advocate being happy to accept the status quo I’ve spent 12 years trying to change it.
It is acceptance of the status quo that rips my knitting.

In some ways I blame myself for not stepping up to the plate and working to reduce the fragmentation amongst the Celtic supporting ranks that I encountered in those 12 years.

So make the best of what is and there is plenty in what is to make the best of what is, but if the level of dissatisfaction at what isn’t is so great it requires action then don’t expect that change to come from elsewhere but from within the support itself.

No offence, but wouldn’t dream of even getting into a debate upon such a subject, especially when you are a far knowledgeable person than myself upon the subject in question.

Prefer to try and stay in the positive world moreso than the negative one these days.

Spent way too long within, and came at a huge cost within my own personal life.

My Celtic world, is a great escape from ongoing issues with the amount of enjoyment involved at present, for myself anyway.

That doesn’t mean that I’m totally happy with what goes on within all the same, but for myself the good outweighs the bad by some distance, again at present.

Now that is currently my individual choice, that seems to work better at present, compared to the many wrong choices I done, and that’s within just the subject of our club.

I’m no more than an imperfect individual, trying to get by within an imperfect world, which involves our club also.

That’s my choice, but remain open for others to say if there is a better way.
Also have no issues regarding anyone wanting to air there grievances, but wouldn’t recommend the violent route in doing so either.
The price is too big for the enjoyment that is still available within our club imo.

Hi Bada:
Agreed. Entirely as predicted with emphasis on Jota and Schlupp, and measured answers to questions ( which for a change were direct and to the point ). Brendan is too smart a cookie to get himself into public handbags with the suits. He did dance around a couple of questions. i.e. the one about why we didn’t have a striker committed before Kyogo was let go, and the one about not learning from the last window. I think if we screw up the next window and don’t qualify for the CL that he may not extend his contract.

That would be a tragedy on several levels, and I can’t stop myself from thinking that his support at Board level is not unanimous. And we all know who I’m thinking about.

Hope you are in the pink.

I thought I made myself crystal clear. I love this Board with a passion, because they are all for one with the Celtic support, share our aims and ambitions, meet us regularly to see what our issues are and how they can help, are wonderful communicators, continually support the manager’s needs to improve the squad, are pro-active strategic planners in the transfer market with a coherent coordinated policy, do not give themselves undeserved pay raises and bonuses, and do not lie through their teeth to shareholders at stage managed AGMs.

Let’s face it, how can we ask for anything more?😂

Hi Mike:
I saw one of these contraptions at an agricultural fair in Maryland on a day well over 30C.

The volunteer victim was a political candidate, a somewhat stout gentleman, who gamely hoisted himself umpteen times out of the giant tank, after being repeatedly dunked, to the huge entertainment of the large audience. I watched one athletic looking young guy strike the target time after time, triggering the lever that toppled the helpless fat guy into the huge tank. Then I realized that guys were buying tickets and handing them to the thrower. I asked one lad what was going on, and he said, “We can’t throw for sh-t. He pitches for the Frederick Keys!” ( a AAA baseball team, and feeder club for the Baltimore Orioles ).

But as it remains a guessing game about what actually goes into these contracts.

Johnno,
Maybe such a low release was the only way he would extend. I think he had around 18 months left so could have went pre contract within a year. He did a great job for us but he was as selfish as any other player that worked his ticket out the club. We can’t really have any issue with it, that’s modern football but he’s avoided a lot of flak that plenty of other players doing similar have experienced.

Kyogo – one to put to bed.
We had the best of him. The last 12 months he’s spent as much time on the park offside as on.
I thought, through his demeanour, he was pissed off and petulant about it a lot of time. 1 CL goal ( against Slovan) and no assists was a poor return.

The inordinate haste with which he left says a lot.

He’s gone to a new challenge and will need to up his game to make a success in France. Good luck, we move on – sort of!

Very true.
Also a slight change in the players we did actually attract during this window also.
Jota and Tierney with great experience of what our club has to offer.
Schulpp with the age factor involved was something of a surprise, as usually wouldn’t be a player that we would have had much interest in, during days gone by.
Don’t know yet if there might be starting to see a change in policy with getting more experienced players in, to help moreso with our younger developing players in the making?
Still got plenty available to keep the turnover in the players trading model intact at present.
But could the older more seasoned professional be able to provide more stability for ourselves, for a few more seasons ahead?

Lads,lads, lads and girls…
If this Bord were clamped in the Village Stocks …there are folk on here would complain about the moral issues around criminal waste of (rotten) food thrown…
Some would almost certainly throw themselves in front of the barrage…😂😂🤣😂

For the record and I think IQ1V can confirm.

I sought legal advice on taking PL to court for his response to the 5WA.

I had £20k pledged by Res12 shareholders to meet the cost.

Legal advice was case might not be winnable (although there was a lot more to introduce ) but just by taking the matter to court the message to the Board would have been the support are serious people who deserve attention.

However a recognised supporters body was needed to take the initiative forward.

The CST were approached but not only refused to take the matter forward, they doctored a resolution to the AGM their own members supported that removed key evidence Celtic did not want being published.

Why do I say this? Just to say do not mistake my attempts to set out how the Board see things as support for how they do things, so I hope I’m not in the group of clowns you refer to.

Had that £20k been used to go legal, PL would not be at CP now and I would be more than happy to qualify as a happy clapper.

Just to add a bit of info to better inform judgements being made.

I can understand the misconception of course I can, but I have the courage to argue for what I think is good for Celtic regardless of the perception created.

Given that clarification SES and thanks for the opportunity to put my case can we all please leave the matter there because I really prefer unity to division.

Mags

The question remains as whether supporters get value for their money in return?
Think again it can be answered on an individual basis.
With the waiting list as it seems to be for ST then it seems like it must remain the case?
