A Game Of Two Halves (!)
Morning,all.
Quite often when MAHE and I do a match review after the night before, we have that proverbial game of two halves to report on. How many times this season have we all moaned about only turning up for one of the 45s but being bloody awful in the other?
So it was last night too, but this time it had nothing to do with the players or the manager. Nope, they did the job they are meant to do-right till the end, I might add-the pity was that my access to the game was minimal in the first half.
Saw very little of it,no point in lying. I’ve seen potted highlights since, but it’s not the same. And just to prove the point, I saw the entire second half. In all its beauty and splendour. Six on the night, with the four in the second 45 running their own Goal Of The Season Competition.
Bear with me for the first two. We had the latest apprentice boy for a MIB last night-how many newbies have we seen this season?-but no problem, he would be ably assisted on VAR by Alan Muir. No great surprise then that the youngster “missed” a clear foul on Trusty at a corner. So obvious that even Muir had to lick the nettle and shout him over for a review. Arne Engels converted.
How often have we complained that when players go down in the box at a corner that it is ours who are penalised? This time MIB Steven saw fit to award a foul AGAINST Trusty instead of to him when he was rugby tackled. As he can only penalise what he has seen, one wonders what his excuse is for that decision when he had a clear view from five yards away!
Our second came on the stroke of half time, just to settle the nerves going into the break. The surprise is that it was necessary, as endless possession and little threat from the opposition should have seen us a few ahead (I’m reliably informed.) Anyway, Idah and Jota combined for them both to have shots saved by the keeper, but third time lucky as our on-form striker lashed home the second rebound.
My left index finger and the refresh button on my device were damn near worn out by this time, but normal service was resumed for the second half. And how! It’s hard to decide which of our forward six plus subs was putting on the style the most. They certainly piled on the agony for Dundee on the back of a 0-6 at home to Hearts. It isn’t the number of goals that’s the problem in this review, it’s the sheer quality of them.
I’m certainly not a sufficient wordsmith to do them justice. The greatest wordsmith in the English language is credited with the invention of over 400 words, simply because he couldn’t find the right ones for “the moment”. Honestly, they were a joy to behold. But no made-up words here, just watch the unique angle when it is posted later.
You won’t be sorry!
Briefly…
3-Jota on the (left) wing twists defenders blood and crosses for Maeda to come flying in from the opposite side after 55 minutes. Peach of a cross, impeccable finish to match.
4-On the hour mark, Maeda latches on to a through ball from Engels and casually dinks it from the edge of the box. Like it’s easy, you know?
5-Ten minutes later, Engels decides that twelve yards is toffee and lets fly from the edge of the area. Leaves the keeper with no chance. Are these goals actually getting better and better?
6-Well, maybe not. A few minutes from the end, Kühn does what he does. Cuts in from the right and across the 18 yard box and onto his left foot. We all know what he wants to do next. The keeper knows too. So what-knowing what is coming and stopping it are two different things. Carson has no chance of stopping this one. Goal of the match standard in most games, but a lowly 5/6 last night!
I hope I’ve given you enough of a taste of the game if, like me, you struggled to see the first half-and worse if you missed the second half. I recommend finding any source possible for highlights or even a full match replay. Because while the goals were outstanding, there were some periods of play which were on a par but unrewarded.
When we look this good, we really look the part. A thoroughly impressive performance even if against maybe the most inconsistent side in the league. That’s not to damn with faint praise though-on this display, who knows who we could beat? Well, let’s get the prayer mats, the beads and the juju looked out for next Wednesday, huh? After all, last night was only a practice session…

Auldheid…the UEFA 3 year rule, in relation to membership of the National organisation, ie the SFA, was/is a prerequisite of entry into UEFA competition. It could be argued that to be a member of the SFA certified accounts have to be submitted regularly!
Anyhoo, what’s the real answer?
====
Close but no cigar.
The relevant UEFA Article under FFP was Art12. I think it is Art 14 under FSR.
There is no mention anywhere in both or indeed all UEFA Articles of a need for 3 year accounts.
What is needed for a club to be eligible to apply for a UEFA licence is that must have 3 years membership of its national association.
Sevco did not have that in 2012 and had to wait until 2016 to be eligible to apply as The Rangers.
The purpose of Art12/14 is to protect the integrity of UEFA competition by preventing a club dumping debt via liquidation then carrying on as same club. Scottish football gave up on protecting the integrity of professional Scottish football when the governing bodies representing the clubs signed the 5WA.
The UEFA Head of Club Licensing Andre Traverso made it clear in 2016 when replying to Res12 shareholders lawyer that Sevco were a NEW club (TRFC) company (RIFC) to the consternation of that mob and indeed SFA whose communication guy Broadfoot got STV Grant Russell to put out a later statement supposedly from UEFA media that left out the NEW club/company description.
A confusing factor is that in 2012 Rangers under CW were refused a licence for 2012/13 because they had no audited accounts for 2011/12. That is where the accounts misunderstanding arose, causing the conflation of both.
That conflation lasts still and misleads still.
Which is my point. Often the devil is in the detail and where I know the detail I have to correct the false narrative arising.
I don’t do it to be smart I do it so that a proper interpretation can be applied.
If that or other of my input is seen as Board supporting then that is down to those who want to filter it via a Board critical lens, one that I try to set aside to get to the real truth on which better informed dialogue and understanding can take place.
Would folk prefer I say nothing and let false damaging narratives prevail or try to produce a true narrative?
Only saw highlights for last two games. Keep in mind Celtic werent the only team to put six past Dundee this week
with that in mind, what changes in the middle did people see that would makeCeltic better able to cope with the expected onslaught from Bayern, and even the zombies?
Dundee or no Dundee, the manner in which Celtic played last night was absolutely joyful! Earlier in the season I suggested that Celtic were playing a mix of Ange and BR’s fitba, a high=pressing, fast flowing type of fitba. In the last coupla months that’s been missing and our form has been a bit up and doon. Last night was back to the style we’d played earlier…one touch passing, lots of unselfish running, players showing for each other, lovely wee triangles in tight areas causing problems for the Dundee defence. So, yip, it was only Dundee, and yip Hearts did take 6 off them but I’d be astonished if Hearts achieved it playing the brand of fiitba we did!
So shush! 🤐😁
Mike…I saw a lot of players playing with confidence in each other and themselves! A good start for any fitba team! Different types of passing, too. Short in tight spaces and long to exploit areas behind defenders. I also witnessed players running behind, a feature we’ve not had for a while, and one of the reasons Kyogo decided it wasn’t for him anymore! So plenty to be positive about but good enough to challenge Bayern? Hmm, not yet, unfortunately!

The goal was a thing of beauty!
It went ..
Hatate to Jota in the corner.
Jota inside to Callum.
Callum across the box to AJ
AJ releases it to Engels in acres of space on the right.
Arne’s ball to Maeda gets to him via a touch from the defender, but his finish is both cheeky and brilliant!
Goal of this season.
Twisty
Great to see you posting.
Lurkers are us.
McCaff goal from the start is included in this article:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/celtic
Frodshambhoy…cheers for that. What an outstanding goal, Jota and Reo were supercalm in a tight corner, the ball from Engles was a cracker, Maeda a touch lucky with the defender getting a slight nick but what a finish! Yeah, goal of the season for me!

BMCUWPS @ 12:09 am,
That’s an interesting point, INIQUITOUSIV’s negativity has me wearing out my thumb as I scroll through Sentinels these days.
————————————————
Apologies for the long post.
Hello Chairbhoy:
That is several times now you have come on here and had a personal go at me in pejorative terms. It’s wearing thin. Nowhere in a record of years of posting on CQN and here will you find a single one where I attack a fellow poster. I read all your posts. I agree with the sentiment in a lot of them. With others I don’t, but I don’t have a go at you or cast aspersions.
I tell it as I see it. If we are playing poorly, I’ll say it. If we’re not, I’ll say that too. For reference, below are 3 of my recent posts. Where is the negativity? If you are referring to me slating our performance in the transfer window, try reading the Celtic Blog, ACSOM or the HuddleBoard, and several others. James Forrest excoriates it, and with some justification. Brendan’s “We could have done better” is a euphemism for the ages.
I love it when Celtic win. I adore it when we beat Sevco. But it rips my knitting when the Board do not support the manager, display zero ambition in Europe, and display evidence of being totally at sea in scouting and recruitment. Alan Morrison, far more eloquently than I, classes the last window as “amateur hour.” Is he being negative? Not at all, he is being realistic.
I left another site because of personal attacks after expressing my views based on 60 years of being a player, coach, manager and fan. I love the banter on this site with guys like McCaff and Big Audio Dynamite, among many others, whose outlook is almost invariably upbeat and sunny. But I wouldn’t dream of referring to them as Happy Clappers or some other insult.

Can’t understand The Gombeen Man’s relentless undermining of Brendan. I was severely critical of our manager’s tactics and lack of flexibility during the Bigotdome fiasco. I am also aware that he made mistakes at Liverpool and Leicester, and I believe he is smart enough to have learned from these experiences
But my bottom line is – we are highly unlikely to find a better manager if Brendan leaves, voluntarily or otherwise. Doubly so, if responsibility for recruitment of a new manager is the remit of the present Board!
—————————
Didn’t see the game but just watched it back. Football in the first part of second half was the best we have seen this season. And just read the blog back.
Some random thoughts: Jota is a very creative threat, and can only get better. When Engels popped one in from 25 yards, BMCUWP thought it was just for me,😅 but seriously, why don’t we do it more often? Hatate, AJ, Callum, even GT had opportunities to take a pop from around 18, but all elected to pass. Engels has it in his locker – let’s see him keep doing it!
Kuhn masterfully chipped in from the corner of the box. We have all seen Salah do this dozens of times for Chelsea, Fiorentina, Liverpool and Egypt. Kuhn has the talent to do this with ease. Let’s see it more often.
Maeda is a gutsy wee player, not afraid to put his head in where it could hurt. Both of his goals were superb, with the second a culmination of an end to end sweeping move and a finish reminiscent of Kyogo in his pomp. Goal of the season.
A wee bit puzzled why Kuhn looked so serious after he scored, but he was laughing away after the game, so no worries. Brendan’s subs were all appropriate and well timed.
A lot of us mourned the fact we did not sign John McGinn, but at least we now have a player with approximately the same sized rear end.😂. Schluup fitted in seamlessly, and it was strange to see a winning header from the left back position!🤣. I wondered how this lad would do as a central midfielder sitting in front of our center backs if we are in an Alamo position at the Allianz?
Finally, Kaspar is a wage thief. Lollygagged around doing nothing all night.😅

Sorry but this is too good to miss.
The title he would have given to the transfer window would be
Much Ado About Nothing. 😀

Hi Auldheid:
I think you’ve left me an open goal here, mate!
I think the bold William would have entitled the window as:
Comedy Of Errors🤣
But let’s hope he would rename it later as:
All’s Well That Ends Well.😅

Good afternoon, friends.
2 things are possibly the reason for the delays in the number of expected emails after last night’s performance – (1) trying to narrow your final nominations down to 3; and (2) I know that loads of folk had difficulty in catching coverage of the game. But, anyway, still 5 full hours left to stick in your opinions and , remember please feel free to join in at any time! SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM
AFTERNOON ALL AND JIM AND MAGUA well what a night we win 6-0 on my birthday 7-2 would have sounded better 😎😎 what a build up and goal from maeda ,brilliant stuff, would also like to add my congrats to adam Idah yes I was one of his biggest critic’s, but he has made me eat humble pie recently well done son👍mind you I thought henrik Larsson was a dud on his first few games with us😎😎wee Joan said i was singing sean south of garryowen at 1-0 clock this morning ,dont believe a word of it canny remember the words, oh wait a minute, twas on a dreary new years eve as the shades of light came down, a lorryload of volunteers approached a border town ,there were men from Dublin and from cork Fermanagh and tyrone, but the leader was a limerick man sean south of garryowen, see told you I didn’t know it😎😎😎

That is exactly my point. When that happens credibility in the poster gets undermined so we owe it to ourselves to be as accurate as possible or lose credibility.
A lesson I learned from years using social media which can be cruel and unforgiving on the misinformer. I call it the Aberdonian excuse ie
“Just one sheep, just one.”

Bayern supporters will have to pay as little as £15 pounds for a ticket for their home CL game against Celtic. Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen explains the clubs reasoning
“I am deeply convinced that it must be possible for someone who doesn’t have a job today to be able to go to the cinema and pay roughly the same price for a standing ticket in our stadium.
The fans in the stands are the backbone and foundation of the team. That’s where our power comes from, that’s where the atmosphere comes from. A Bayern fan with a standing area season ticket pays the equivalent of less than 10 euros per Bundesliga game during the season.
That’s unbelievably cheap. I am very pleased we are still able to offer such prices. Yes. we could increase the prices without any problems – because we have a list of I don’t know how many people who will pay any price… but we don’t want that. It is right that football and sport remain accessible.”

I never got round to responding to your post about our shared view sbout Celtic’s level being EL regulars.
We both agree we have the wisdom of age that was conferred on us at the Vodvojina game where we were both sprinked with Holy Bovril in the bringing of wisdom of age ceremony.
I also half remember another ceremony where Lanliqu was the sprinkle agent.
I think that was an antidote to the wisdom ceremony where the recipient became a mad mental Tim.
They walk amongst us wise guys still.
😎
(Don’t mention Calton Tongues)
Didn’t have long to wait until it was the
’just Dundee ‘ trope.
Players and manager ( no mug ) who’d just lost six would have been determined not to let it happen again.
Their livelihood.
We dismantled them.
That Greg Taylor eh… what’s he like !

“That is several times now you have come on here and had a personal go at me in pejorative terms. It’s wearing thin.”
Well a while back I did take the negativity up with you, you said basically scroll by…
So fair enough.
The comment you posted regarding the Gombeen Man was very pertinent, although granted my comment wasn’t constructed very well and didn’t make that clear.
However my overall point was the general negativity towards Brendan Rodgers on the site allowed fertile ground for those with an agenda to try to leverage that.
It just struck me as somewhat paradoxical.
You have made you points regarding the Board, regarding the transfer window and your support of BR crystal clear.
So, again, fair enough.
I have no wish to cast “aspersions” or get into a hoo-ha, so now rarely post.
So best wishes to all and back to the lurkin’

Good on Bayern for keeping tickets affordable.
What relevance does that have for Celtic?
I believe the Bundesliga has the second richest TV deal worth about a billion a year. It is behind the EPL, which I think gets 5 billion for domestic rigts and another 5 billion for overseas rights. I think the Bundesliga rights with DAZN cover some domestic and overseas, but I am not certain about that.
What that means in relation to Celtic, I’ll need to give some thought to …
Mike, we all know what it means for Celtic fans, we pay double or more for a ticket than Bayern’s fans! I was at a Bundesliga game in November and it was 17 o 18 euros for the ticket. The equivalent for Celtic Park would be about 40 quid for a walk up on the day punter! So, what does it mean for Celtic? How does a bank balance of ONE HUNDRED MILLION POUNDS sound to you!
Big Packy.
I was born about 200yards from the Barrowland Ballroom.
That proximity to my father meant a tuxedo was de riguer dress on Friday Sat and Wed and you were lucky the bill was only £500.
Tuxedo’s were regularly kidnapped in the Calton for prestige purposes and offered for hire in the queues outside.
Also on offer were bibles but less said the better
