Celtic FC
Morning,all.
A big few days ahead for our players and the manager as they continue the defence of the Scottish Cup. You might be forgiven for thinking that the emphasis would be on the midweek game when we host Bayern Munich, and I would agree that should indeed be the case. However, “the suits” in our boardroom, the people who control the purse strings whether we like it or not, clearly think otherwise. How else do you explain our failure to bolster our strike-force?
Our spearhead in attack is now any one from three. Idah, who is looking sharper since the departure of Kyogo. Kenny, who has been out on loan for so long that some of us were wondering whether or not he had a future with us-and with only one short appearance since his return, that is still a valid question. And Cummings, who has decided that his future lies in those bright lights of London, and has rarely been trusted with an appearance.
Additionally, it appears that Taylor has signed a pre-contract with Dinamo Zagreb and Adam Montgomery has gone on loan to Queen’s Park, leaving only the on-loan Schlupp as competition at left back. Of course, we know Scales can do a job there, but he can’t cover that position as well as centre-back.
Anyway, there’s little point now in fretting over another shocking transfer window, is there? BR has effectively been left with a worse squad than at Christmas, despite “always aiming to come out of each transfer window stronger.” Laughable sentiments, to which they barely pay lip service. I’ll get over it eventually, of course. I always do.
Doesn’t mean that I forget though.
So a teatime kickoff for tomorrow against Raith Rovers, who are struggling a bit in the Championship. Nearer to the relegation play-off than the promotion one. It should be a comfortable enough evening, though we can never be complacent. Giant-killing still happens, and we’ve been on the end of a few ourselves. I think the manager will use the game to get some time into the likes of Schlupp and Jota, while resting the likes of CCV and Kühn. He might even take the chance to give CalMac a wee break, leaving him on appearance 501 until Wednesday. That’ll be CalMac, who scored for us the last time Bayern came to town.
Apart from those and maybe a spot of mix and match in midfield, I don’t expect any tactical changes to the starting line-up. Just strategic ones, because whether the suits agree or not, our focus should be on midweek. Yes, we play one game at a time. And no, we won’t be weakening our side too much by resting some players. Win the game tomorrow and get cracking on the plans for Wednesday. A big task is ahead of us, and we need to embrace it. But it should be about winning, not damage limitation. About results on the pitch, not on the Glorious Balance Sheet.
I’ll always offer praise where it is due, but Celtic Fc is a football club, not a bank. The clue is in the FC part, it doesn’t stand for financial colossus. We know it, even if our board believe otherwise.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #38 CELTIC 6 DUNDEE 0 (ENGELS(2), IDAH, MAEDA(2) KUHN)*
Good evening, friends.
An apology to start with. After each game, whenever anyone picks the same 3 as me, I do try to send a personal reply. But the results would have been delayed until midnight with this game as it became pretty clear early on that 3 folk were in many folks’ minds. Approximately 43 (forty three!) had the same 3 as me.
Most folk seem to agree that last night was one of our best performances of the season to date. Our levels remained high throughout the entire 94 minutes, and it really was 6 going on 10 by the end. And all 6 goals had something great about them.
A lengthy VAR check midway through the first half seemed to confuse pretty much every fan in the ground and every player on the pitch given that there had been no apparent claim for any infringement. But later TV pictures showed a clear pull on Trusty’s shirt and Arne Engels put his disappointment of 2 weeks behind him to dispatch an unstoppable penalty into the left hand corner. Our 100th goal of a pretty successful season.
We had to wait until stoppage time to give us our comfortable half time cushion. A wonderful through pass from Taylor reached Idah, whose shot was parried by the Dundee keeper. Jota’s follow up was also saved but Adam managed to score from that rebound making it 4 in 3 games from the ever improving Cork man.
Early in the second half and we saw the best goal of the night (until that point). A double step over from Jota on the left created space for him to send in a vicious curling cross to the far post for Daizen Maeda’s diving header.
Not long after that brought the highlight of the night and a potential goal of the season. Jota worked back and found himself down at Celtic’s own left hand corner flag. A couple of passes to get out of trouble and then Jota squared to Calum who played the ball across to Johnston and then forward to Engels. Arne sent a beautiful 50 yard curling pass into the path of Maeda. And having executed a Larsonnesque header in our last game, this time Daizen decided on a Larsonnesque chip over the onrushing goalkeeper into the gaping net. A very European like roar from the stands hailed this wonder goal.
Our final 2 goals were – shockarooni – shots from outside the box. Firstly, Engels tried his luck from 28 yards, getting a slight deflection that was enough to create some top spin on the ball which fley into the top right postage stamp. And then with about 10 minutes remaining Nicolas Kuhn reminded us all that he hasn’t gone away! Cutting in from the right and from the corner of the 18 yard box he sent a brilliant curling shot into the far corner of the net. Another screamer on a night with fantastic goals.
Since 30 November 2024 we have played 9 home games in all competitions. We scored 1 against Young Boys, 2 against Dundee United and Kilmarnock, 3 against Hibs and St Mirren, 4 against Motherwell and St Johnstone, 5 against Ross County and 6 against Dundee. A total of 30 goals. And we have conceded just once, against Kilmarnock in the cup. That is some going!
And if instead we just concentrate on league games, then the last goal conceded at Celtic Park was Aberdeen’s equaliser in the 2-2 draw on October 19th. Since then, we’ve played 9 home league games, scored 29 and haven’t conceded a single one!
Overall, we have now played 38 games this season, winning 28, drawing 7 and losing 3. We have scored 105 and conceded 33 (domestically it’s 92-19 and in Europe it’s 13-14).
Thank you so much to the 78 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Schmeichel: 0
Johnston: 0
Carter-Vickers: 2
Trusty: 0

Hatate: 26
Maeda*: 78
Idah: 2
Jota*: 49
Bernardo: 0

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Dundee are –
Maeda – 5 points
Engels – 4 points
Jota – 3 points
Hatate – 2 points
Taylor – 1 point
Note – the top 5 for Sunday’s game at Motherwell were almost identical – Maeda, Idah, Jota, Hatate, Taylor!)
And the overall positions after 38 games played are –
58 points – Kuhn
54 points – Maeda
48 points – Hatate
47 points – Engels
45 points – Schmeichel
43 points – McGregor
41 points – Bernardo, Scales

The 2nd of our 4 consecutive home games is this Saturday. It’s a 5.30pm kick off for our fourth round Scottish Cup tie against Raith Rovers.
Nicola Kuhn has led the player of the year chart since Game 16. Will he still be leading after the weekend? Only you can decide!

I might be wrong but I think this is our 3rd sat teatime game this season and every one has been right before a CL game.
We could easily rest AJ CCV Calmac and Kühn ( again). Keep our key personnel safe from over enthusiastic and industrial tackling from our less able, lower level opposition.
I recall Iwata, I think, getting crocked badly versus ( same old) Alloa a few years ago.
I realise injury can happen at any time, but it is surely prudent to minimise that possibility with a vital game ahead.
It’s what the squad is for, surely.
We have another Saturday 5.30pm ko on March 1st. Away to St M.
An inconvenient time for any game- particularly trying to watch in the pub!!
Well, our pub at least. Full of non footy types out on the lash all afternoon!
Celtic FC – Fulsome Contingency( my recent hobbyhorse, but not an invitation to Auldheid to debate further).😀
I see there was continued confusion yesterday regarding the CEO’s bonus scheme during the tenure of Peter Lawwell.
The big bonus that was highlighted in the tabloids (without discussion of the qualifying criteria) related to what an incentive based over three years dependent on qualifying for and playing in the group stages of the UCL.
There was a second annual bonus scheme at that time related to a 20% bonus awarded for standard corporate type objectives.
Why folk rely on the internet, the print and broadcast media for their information is a mystery.
Annual Accounts, 2019, page 25.
Long Term Performance Incentive Plan (“LTIP”).
“The criteria for the LTIP to become payable as determined by the Board are that Celtic FC qualifies and participates in the UCL group stages in the applicable financial year.
The first LTIP period was the 1st of June 2016 to 30th June 2019.
In order to receive payment for the period the participant must have been employed by the Company on 31st December 2018.
Awards under this arrangement accrue in each applicable financial period and those accumulated during the first LTIP were paid on 25th January 2019.”
Good morning friends and a Big Happy Friday to all who post or lurk on this fine site.
I’d still prefer that we start with our strongest team tomorrow to then apply the wrap-in-cotton-wool tactic once the tie is won. Kicking off at 5.30pm the than 3.00pm shouldnt really affect the recovery time too much. But extra time and penalties would, so best to avoid them with a 3 nil half time lead!
The only exception for me might be to keep Adam Idah on the bench.
Anyways, almost grandweans o’clock so a lurking only day for me….
Scales is not a left back.
Stop it.
Jobo
Great work on the player ratings.
Astonished that Kuhn didn’t get a single vote considering the goal he scored…
Tbh I couldn’t fit him in with Top 3 matching most….nevertheless nil points…no wonder his wee coupon looked burst.
mebbe he’s got ‘The Sight’ ?

Thanks SeS – a perfect example of how players can have a great game yet get no.ponts if there were 3 or 4 others who played even better!
Surely Wikipedia can’t be wrong:
Liam Scales (born 8 August 1998) is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a centre-back or a left-back for Scottish Premiership club Celtic and the Republic of Ireland national team.

I copied and pasted his profile from Wiki
It says he’s a left back.
Post is waiting approval
At least you didn’t say he is not a footballer.
😁😁😁
Always loved watching us win the Scottish cup 🏆 In fact, some of my favourite Celtic moments involve being at great semi-final (Hearts 88) and finals (Any involving D.United …sorry, the Arabs) so, for me, no let up the mora!
Have absolutely loved the last few weeks, even though it involved watching us lose in England (We don’t care if we …??) Cause it’s usually around this time great teams motor toward winning the championship.
Some will say it was only Motherwell and Dundee, but we can only beat the teams from our own country, and it should take absolutely nothing away from how we played. If we were to keep up this level of performance, why can’t we be confident going up against Bayern? If you don’t dream …
Try and put the mora’s game away as early as possible, then give minutes to as many players as we can. Maybe there’ll be an opportunity to get Kenny 45mins. From what I have seen of him he looks really sharp …while he could have scored in his last 2 appearances.
Same again Celts.
£8,300 fine for pyros at Villa, nothing about fans being banned
The Gombeen Man @ 7:56am
Long Term Performance Incentive Plan (LTIP)
Or in layman’s terms ……… The Friends Of Peter Bonus Society. Probably invented by friend of Peter, Tom Allison. Let’s give Peter THREE MILLION POUNDS, just because we can. Former left wing firebrand, Brian Wilson, happy to nod in agreement.
If Celtic really was a Club Like No Other, that £3m could have been spent on infrastructure, or even charity. But no, transfer it to Peter. The same Peter that took a salary of £900k during the disastrous empty stadium covid season. No doubt many of the support who paid upfront for season cards that year would have been furloughed, or even lost their jobs.
The LTIP is an abomination of a scheme, and should have been strangled at birth. Ironic that it started when BR (mk1) entered the building. It was the team that Rodgers put on the park that filled the stadium, after the top tier tarpaulin Ronny period. It was Rodgers’ team that qualified for the Champions League, and won the treble. Nothing whatsoever to do with Lawwell, Allison, or any of the other suits.
Peter Lawwell, was, is, and always will be a charlatan of a man.
Morning all,
Strongest team tomorrow then early substitutes.
Ps
Nasty rumour going around that BRRB was seen at the game on Wednesday with Prestonpans Bhoy and he was sober !!!!!!!!!
I thought the world was going mad in politics but Mama Mia, !!!!!!!!
Is there no end to this madness 😂😂😂
Jota,Kenny, Schlupp added to CL squad

Agree 100%. We should definitely be looking at the squad closely for this match especially given how short we could be in some areas if injuries occur. Championship teams show no mercy in the tackle as was the case against Alloa. Remember it was Buckfast Barry who was the manager at the time and was it not Ideguchi who was crocked. Regardless of who it was we have bigger fish to fry this week. I would like to see Sinisalo – Murray or Nawrocki – Sclupp and Kenny all starting to get game time under their belt. Dont think we would be weakening too much as these guys should all be able to handle the game against lower opposition.
Anyway big game tonight in Ayrshire. Two managers doing well at present who dont want to harm their present reputation . Brown and Gray.
For once I hope green and white colours fail….
Frodshambhoy
Wiki is notoriously unreliable… says Nat Phillips is a centre half !
Scales an International player and has improved, possibly as much as he can, but as a Centre Half.
Playing him left back misunderstands the modern nature of that position ( Bradley ).
and is unfair to him and us.
As a totally last resort, in game management as a result of injuries/ red card then just maybe.
Be like asking Callum McGregor to play left back… 😀
Ronaldo (Portugal) was asked recently where he would place himself on the list of the greatest players to have ever played.
His answer may not be that surprising.
He told the interviewer that he has never seen any player who was\is better than him!
Nothing wrong with confidence but that guy is fucking delusional.
I would have him near the top if the question was about who were the greatest goal scorers ever, cause his goal tally is hard to believe!
Maradona and Messi are the best I have ever seen, with Diego having skills that were mind bending.
I know his match fitness couldn’t have been great but Jota’s time in France is a bit of a mystery.
A club struggling for points to get out of the relegation battle couldn’t find a place for him in their line-up? Even half fit he would have added another dimension to their attack
Things have worked out great for us, having managed to get him on a 5 year deal. Here’s hoping he is still here at the end of the current contract 👍
BAD
he needs to play in an attacking team.
like Paddy Roberts did. Sometimes you need a fit to perform at your best.
Most obvious recent example. Shane Duffy.
proven backs to the wall defender but no use to man nor beast if he has to defend from the halfway line.
Maradona definitely the best player on this planet this past 40 years. No question. 2nd best undoubtedly Messi.
Ronaldo, certainly one of the finest of this past 15 years+ , most certainly in European terms and his achievements are up there with the best in the world. But was he better than Puskas, Pele, Usebio, Best etc? Possibly, but how do we judge?
What isn’t for debate is the fact that the two Argentinian players mentioned above were and are better.
Triple H,
If I was a gambling man I’d bet on you being absolutely right.
If I was in that position as a manager I’d try and find a way to get him on the pitch.
As I hope he goes on to prove again, the boy is a game changer!
Auldbhoy67
Yeah, you’re right …I think 🤔
Regardless, our point stands.
Rest key players.
It’s RR ffs, our squad is assembled to cover in games such as these.
San Luis,
You also need to factor in the absolute abuse that Maradona had to try and deal with while still doing his stuff. Imagine trying to play like he did while you are being man marked by a beast like Gentile! I don’t think Napoli had ever really achieved anything before him and Careca arrived.
Watching those 2 together was just an absolute joy!
Just sayin’,
Famous last words?
it’s only Clyde and we’ve got a midfield with Lennon and Keane,, this will be a cake walk! 😉
Celtic have avoided a ban on their supporters for the Champions League play-off second leg at Bayern Munich.
The Scottish champions received another disciplinary notice from European football’s governing body Uefa after a smoke bomb was thrown on to the pitch during the game at Aston Villa on 29 January.
Celtic were given a two-year suspended ban on selling tickets to away fans following the use of pyrotechnics during their match at Borussia Dortmund in October.
But, while the suspended ban remains in place, a Uefa control, ethics and disciplinary committee has decided to impose a €10,000 (£8,400) fine for the throwing of fireworks, with no additional penalty.
Celtic had warned fans about the risk in making travel arrangements for the game in Munich before a judgement was reached.
Bayern visit Celtic Park for the first leg of the play-off tie on 12 February with the return in Germany six days later.
====
£8.4k fine, which interestingly is exactly the alleged amount Brendan spends on teeth whitening procedures each month😉 Could have been much worse i guess but the travelling support will now be able to dust off the (Tartan) lederhosen for a trip to Barvaria.
https://www.trachten24.eu/original-bavarian-lederhosen
BAD
Re Ronaldo (C). Very hard to argue with his stats and obviously he has been a great player but as his career progressed he seemed to eliminate everything from his game that was not geared to him scoring a goal. All great attackers have to a streak of selfishness but he took it too far.
For me Pele, Cruyff, Zidane, Messi and above all Diego Maradonna were much more to my taste- players who transformed fine sides into great ones which C Ronaldo never did. The one player Celtic has had in my time who touched that class was Jimmy Johnstone – his performances post-Lisbon were breathtaking and at the time there were plenty of people who thought he was better than George Best whatever we are told now.
Have a good day

No need to now the facts have been established.
Pitymevin posed a question on how much cash should be stockpiled based on a misunderstanding of FSR which I have clarified.
Now I have no more idea of why that cash is being held back than the next guy so my FSR reasoning is as speculative as anyone’s.
However is the principle of waiting until the market price drops, as long as it does not affect domestic success, a reasonable one for any company to take especially as they invested time in trying to change the market they found too expensive to shop in?
Forget it is Celtic Board when considering the answer on the principle.
Leggy@9:50
Yes he was guilty as charged!
Jimbo,
I’ve never seen a player who had to contend with the physical abuse that Diego had to in Italy, and yet he transformed Napoli into a better team than Juve, Milan and Roma. His ankles were just constantly black and blue as well as swollen, but no one could stop him!
His highlights from his time in Italy (Including winning them a European trophy) are breath-taking. Neither Messi or Ronaldo took an average team and turned them into champs the way he did with Napoli.
BAD
Yup the assaults the wee man took were beyond sport.
An absolute legend of the game.
B A D
Point taken.
For me this isn’t about hubris, it’s protecting vulnerable key assets with a massive couple of months ahead of us against over enthusiastic lower league journeymen, some of whom might have a reason to be over competitive.
Ideguchi against Alloa is a salutary lesson.
We have more than enough squad depth to deal with RR – at home.
BAD/San Luis
I possibly undersold Diego in comparison with the others transformative abilities. Brazil, Santos, Ajax, France etc would have been pretty good sides even without their talismen but neither Napoli nor Argentina in 86 would have got near their success without Diego. And apart from wee Jimmy nobody can have been hacked more often than Diego
Jimbo
Just sayin’,
Sorry, I was just being cute.
One thing I’m absolutely sure about is the how much I trust Brendan to come up with the right answers.
Surely he has a better record in this tournament than any manager who has gone before him. Every single time Brendan has entered this competition he has won it! To do that in a knock-out comp is actually incredible.
Played 18 Scottish cup ties and yet to lose a single game!
Honestly, I hope he stays till he is done with football, cause I wouldn’t want to swap him for any name in world football. We always were a good cup team, but his record takes a few double takes.

As I said yesterday – I’m hoping my self discipline allows me to take a backseat now on financials, Machiavellian Board shenanigans and remuneration and recruitment recriminations until this league is won.
My last contribution on the debate.
If the substantial/ colossal surplus, over CL failure contingency, is to maximise player purchase opportunities then the Plc have played a blinder, and we will be welcoming exciting additions in the Summer.
We’ll see.
Footy first for me until this league is won.
Jimbo,
Absolutely correct.
My wee man was insisting no one came close to Messi.
That lasted till I showed him Diego – Mid-eighties – transforming Napoli into the best team in Italy, as well as contenders for the big prizes in Europe. He now says he has never seen a more skillful player than Diego.

Whereas the likes of myself are broken records … just giving oxygen to blog debate!
Just as long as we’re in the hat/ transparent plastic container for the next round
Some are reporting that Greg has agreed to move to Zagreb at the conclusion of his contract.
Not saying it is impossible but I’ll be extremely surprised if that actually happens.
I was sure he would have come to an agreement with us.
Just sayin’,
Too true.
I’m serious when I say I’ll happily sit and watch us winning 1-0 the morea, with barely a care about how we played over the 90+mins.
All I really care about is Celtic winning, with playing great always being secondary 👍

I had a reason to continue discussion as I did and it came from my integrity being raised and I wanted to make it clear to SC contributors that when I put forward a point that seems to excuse the Board making me a happy clapper etc that my purpose is to inform thinking NOT defend The Board.
I am as aware of Celtic Board failings as the next guy and have been active in trying to address them for a long time.
I would love to see change and that requires trying to see issues from a Board perspective in order to try and persuade them work needs to be done to build bridges rather than deepen the moat that separates us.
Our discussion has given me the opportunity to clarify my motivations including the ethical issue which I think is important if Celtic and the support are ever to be at one.
Altruistic maybe but a much better outcome for all than continuation of the division that the mistrust on both side creates.
So thanks for creating the opportunity to clarify.
Bada bing – I watched about 3 hours of the Phoenix Open last night but eventually went to my kip around 00:30 just before Bob reached that unbelievable arena of a 16th hole. He just have just donned that top for that hole as he hadnt been wearing it earlier. Bob finished 3 under so a very good start. Think he tees off earlier today, maybe about half 3 our time so might catch some of him later. Although my main event tonight will be Ayr v Hibs which should be a good old fashioned Scottish Cup cracker. I expect Hibs to just shade it by the odd goal. Hopefully the odd goal in 7!
