Surprise!!!
Morning,all.
An eventful few days for Celtic supporters as well as for fans of other clubs in the country. Celtic started it all off with a pleasant and reasonably uneventful display against a Raith Rovers who were frankly out of their depth on the day. 5-0 certainly didn’t flatter us, and Raith really only had one chance of note, a well-hit strike capably dealt with by debutant Sinisalo in goal.
The youngster has waited a while for his chance, as Schmeichel has had an outstanding season to date. There have been opportunities for us to give him a start, as well as plenty more when he could have been brought on late in the game. BR had opted not to do so, which meant that he started this one cold. Apart from the save, I was also impressed by the way he commanded his box, especially at corner kicks. It’s been a while since I can remember a Celtic goalie making it his every time a corner came in, even if his two-handed punches could do with some more venom in them.
The big news of the day of course was reserved for Daizen Maeda. Not content with having his two toddlers standing alongside him and stealing the pre-match parade, he then went on to score a hat-trick. He might regret that when his two kids are squabbling over who gets to keep the matchball! A comfortable enough day out, even if it seems that proceedings on the pitch weren’t quite enough to keep ATHINGOFBEAUTY nice and toastie in the stands!!!
Attention then switched to the following day, with some decent enough offerings available. The pick of them was obviously at Villa Park, but the big cup shocks of the day were elsewhere, and about 550 miles apart. Few would have bet against 1/5 favourites Liverpool at Plymouth, but their faith would have been justified. Shockerooni indeed, as the club which recently fired Rooney and are rock-bottom of Tier Two saw off the runaway EPL leaders.
The Magic Of The Cup,indeed…
A bigger shock was to follow closer to home though. R2ngers were a ludicrous 1/40 with the bookies prior to kick off, and I believe Queen’s Park were priced at a handsome 33/1 as they lined up at Ibrox. This was a clash of Scotland’s oldest club against its newest. And bugger me backwards if the oldies didn’t go and bloody win it! To say I was surprised would be something of an understatement. To say that huns everywhere were f…..g furious doesn’t do the result justice either. This was a cataclysmic shock to everyone, and congratulations are due to everyone involved with the winning club. Especially their long-suffering supporters, who love their club as much as every fan of every club loves their club.
Football loves its fairytales, but it’s the guys and gals who turn up every week for the grind, the guys filled with optimism and dread, who ensure that days where dreams can come true happen.
Tomorrow nights sees its own potential tale of giant-killing as one of the biggest clubs in the game come to town. I think I’ve only seen us play Bayern once, under BR Mk I a few years ago. We acquitted ourselves well that night, with CalMac equalising the Bayern opener before we finally succumbed to the relentless pressure. It was two soft goals that night, and Bayern will have known that the scoreline flattered them. Changed days indeed from when they came to town in the early 2000s and we battered them 0-0, watching them celebrate their achievement as though they had just won the bloody trophy!
I had hoped that Saturday’s table-topping clash with holders Leverkusen would distract them from this, maybe see them resting some players ahead of that. But Leverkusen needlessly dropped two points on Saturday, leaving them eight points behind. I think that ship has sailed, and our last hope with it.
But wait! What’s this I hear incoming? Rumours that Celtic did indeed follow my advice to appeal the two-match ban on Maeda-and only went and won the bloody thing?!!! Well, who knew? Why did this take so long? Practically the eve of the event, and all of a sudden, our manager has a selection problem?
This is undoubtedly terrific news for everyone with Celtic firmly in their heart and head. Maeda is currently our man in form, playing out of his skin and the worthy winner of our last three POTY ratings. He’s scoring goals for fun, too. Strangely, he is being played out of position in his favoured position-if that makes any sense-and is having a ball. It makes perfect sense to have him play there on Wednesday night, doesn’t it? With Jota On The Wing and Kühn on the right?
Well…
Does it also make sense to play him on the left, to utilise his tracking? He still scores from there, but by adding his defensive abilities to the side, we reduce our attacking threat-even if Idah has shown himself to be coming onto more of a game recently. Playing him wide would also mean dropping Jota completely. I’m gonna leave the match preview and any likely team prediction to MAHE tomorrow, but this unexpected piece of good news has undoubtedly given BR a very pleasant headache, I reckon. But then, who doesn’t love surprises? And I’d love to have another one around 10pm tomorrow night.
Football,eh?

auldheid,
the problem with financial doping is that it is like any other form of doping/cheating … cheats will have found loop holes/ways to avoid regulations before the regulations even come into effect.
I see something like that in my business routinely … if there is enough incentive (usually money) to cheat, then there are always people who will do so, and there will be people who will assist them (in this case, dastardly lawyers and, even worse, unscrupulous accountants!)
===========
Yes that is human nature but it is also human nature because of the loss incurred by cheating to go after those guilty and in football the rules to prevent cheating were not sufficient enough to prevent it, so have been strengthened and provide other clubs with the opportunity to cry foul when a fellow club cheats.
The whole principle of points deduction for financial chicanery because if on field advantage gained started when one club Sheff Utd under Neil Warnock complained about Leicester indulging in it. So whilst it is in human nature to find ways to cheat it is also part of that same nature to make it not worth while doing.
That principle still applies and points deduction has a salutary effect on cheaters.
It will be interesting to see if the Man City case results in that underlying principle justifying points deduction is wrong.
If financial chicanery is not seen as offering an unfair advantage meriting a points deduction then football ceases to be a sport of relevant equals.
Those in governance know this and it removes a reason for their existence to keep sport alive as a sport.

Sport has never been a competition amongst equals. As you and I have discussed in the past, the unique nature of sports in that it requires competitors to exist, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be a battle of equals.
If Scottish football proves anything, surely it proves that people dont want real or honest competition. Winning at any cost and/or tribalism are the only things that seem to matter, including to most fans.
3-0 Dembele.
Kvaratskhelia on now.
BP,
Sounds like tough times for Joan and yourself. Keep on keeping on pal.

Yes but at what a price socially, a society divided by following a round ball.
FSR recognises this element and is an attempt to put a muzzle on the worst aspects and in terms of our nearest rivals is doing that.

“dastardly lawyers and unscrupulous accountants”
——————————————
A couple of redundant adjectives there, Mike.🤣
Auldheid
Sport should be something to unite people, but as it becomes more and more about money, the aspect of divisiveness (we support our team, we hate their team) and separating punters from their money becomes more and more pronounced.

Dont make me go all habeus corpus on your ass!

This games illustrates that if you put all your eggs in one basket at corners in the CL, you are likely to be hit with a lightning breakaway.
PSG strolling it. Movement off the ball and the speed of their defenders is amazing.

Keep doing the good stuff, mate. All the best to you and wee Joan.

Too much emphasis on the impact the West of Scotland localised “old firm” issue has on society.
Society at large couldn’t give two figs about what happens in Scottish football. A complete non event in most people’s lives, considered a bit infantile, except when loutish public disturbances upset the population at large.
Talking heads on blogs ( I include myself) may be exercised by the nuances and seek to make sense of it but this is not representative of the wider world.
A THING OF BEAUTY,thanks buddy, its been one hell of a year, but thanks to you and that ghuy bobby, think you know him😎😎and mahe dont know what id do without sentinel celts,I am at my whits end at the minute, but coming on here makes me feel better.luv you all to bits.hh 👍👍❤

Two thoughts spring to mind
Evening all.
I’ve just watched Brendan’s presser.
He spoke about Daizen’s qualities, speed, tracking back and the pressure he puts on the opposition.
Brendan hinted, I believe, that Daizen’s finishing was at first, well, not the best.
I may be wrong, but did Ange not bring in Harry Kewell to help, coach with Diazen’s finishing?
I believe that we are now seeing the fruits of that coaching.
Nite y’all
Early rise ‘ra morra.

Brian
Weah at right back for Juventus.
Celtic catch another break as it now appears that Alphonso Davies, who had been training this week after an injury, will not be fit to play tomorrow.
That could be huge as his speed from left back would have meant Kuhn having to cover back a lot, thereby neutralizing one of Celtic’s strongest attacking weapons.
Not like Davies’ replacment, Raphael Guereiro, is a slouch, but at 31, he doesnt have Davies pace going forward
Vini Jr. offside, otherwise Ederson was off.
Superb Galacticos move. Ederson saves.
Man City fortunate to escape there.
City hanging on.
Real’s speed on the counterattack/attack is frightening. Cutting Man City, who are looking old, open with ease.
Thunderous effort from 35 yards from Sporting crashes off Dortmund bar.
Biggest bit of luck was avoiding Real Madrid.
They should be about 4-0 up by now,
bigpacky – sorry to hear how things are with wee Joan. Hope she improves.
City score against the run of play.
a great counterattacking goal …by City!
Wow City score with their first kick 🤪
isnt Haaland offside when the ball is chested to him?

I think I’ll reserve comment on that until after tomorrow night, mate.😊
Goal given after a long VAR check, 1-0 City.
Not a fan of either Madrid(s) or Citeh…can they eliminate one another 😉
but that was some goal by Haaland
Why did that take 3 and a half minutes?
Vinicius hits the bar for Real.
Did look offside to me.
If it was so close surely they should give the advantage to the attacker rather than take ages to decide.

What a belter!
Tremendous shooting by Sporting Lisbon. No luck yet.
In the rugby at the weekend we saw the replays and heard the ref and VAR discussing what they were looking at.
It’s a different world. What is football afraid of.

Mbappe shot goes over from 12 yards.
Galacticos look irresistible. I think a goal is coming.
The good thing about the Man City game on right now is that it means we won’t get that dick Turpin for ref tomorrow
No doubt we’ll get some other paid off UEFA coached dick
