The Nearly Men

Morning,all.

Last night saw one of the game’s great clubs visit our own great club, and what a show was on offer. We started the game like a bullet from a gun, with Kühn going on one of his runs across the edge of the area before firing it low into Neuer’s bottom corner-after only 25 seconds! Sadly, Idah had strayed into the keeper’s line of sight, and it was rightly ruled off.

Even more sadly, that was about as good as it got for us in the first half!

I didn’t check the first half stats, but they would have been heavily in favour of Bayern. They were passing us off the pitch, while all we could do in response was pass the ball off the pitch. Backs to the wall stuff for the entire remaining 44 minutes. And just when it looked like we were gonna go into the break on level terms-we lost focus and lost a goal.

How simple and straightforward it was too, and therefore completely avoidable. A simple enough long ball to the edge of the area on our left. Olise-who only a few years ago was playing for Reading!-picked it up and tried to cut inside Taylor. Instead,it ricocheted back to his right foot and he simply slammed it into the net! Seven bloody seconds before the break anaw!!!

Still,we had another 45 minutes to either endure or come up with an equaliser. Instead, our old failing at corners reared its ugly head again. Who leaves Kane unmarked in the six yard box, ffs? Simple answer to that one is-our defence, that’s who! He certainly didn’t need to be asked twice, just fired it into the net as he has done now for years. I mean, this is basic stuff, Celtic. As is keeping your concentration when you have just lost a goal. Again, we lose them in clutches. Even with the HT break to consolidate.

Quite honestly at that stage I was fearing a doing, considering how the match was going. We couldn’t get our foot on the ball, string a few passes together, create a chance. Bayern were doing it for fun. And clearly having fun too. And then, about ten minutes into the half, a potential lifeline. A lengthy VAR check for a foul by Upemecano on Engels. A stamp on the foot. The referee was called to his monitor-and we know how this usually plays out. Well, usually. Not this time. Referee stuck with his original decision.

In truth, I didn’t see anything to claim for, not until I saw the replay. I think we had a very good case, and can feel bloody hard done by on this one. It did seem to galvanise us into some action though, and not before time. A few minutes later, Taylor was off for Schlupp and Jota came on for Idah-replacing Maeda on the left, who moved into the central role. The Bayern CBs, about four metres tall the pair, must have thought their work was done for the night, just this tiny wee fella to concern us, haha. Well, the joke’s on them.

For starters, Upemecano was way short with a pass back. Daizen doesn’t need much of an opportunity, and he’d been waiting all night for this one. He robbed Neuer and rounded him, but took it well wide in the process. In fairness, he was probably hoping for a rash challenge-I know I was! His effort squirmed along the line to safety.

Next up from the bench was Yang for Kühn, who had persevered without much to show for it. I admit to liking the wee fella, but I don’t think he is at his best on the right. And he’s only 22yo,give the lad a chance! No matter, he poppped up a couple of minutes later as a stramash developed from a corner. His shot was probably sliding past, but Maeda stuck the nut in it and diverted it from close range into the net.

1-2 and game on! The crowd surged back into life, the players surged back into life, and now it was Bayern holding out. What a turnaround, but the job only part done. We needed the equaliser, for sure. We definitely threw everything at it, Bayern being rocked but not rolled, Kane being flattened.

AJ took a belt from the edge of the box. Had it gone in, it would have burst the net on its way to raising the roof! It was not to be, as Neuer parried it away for yet another corner. The ref gave us another seven minutes with which to find it, but the equaliser simply would not arrive. It wasn’t to be our night after all.

I can’t grudge Bayern their victory, given their performance for most of the game was miles better than ours. But I doubt they’d have grudged us that equaliser, given the effort we put in to find it. And to keep the score down at the other end! This was a very very good side we took on, and we acquitted ourselves well. But the scoreline doesn’t lie, and neither do the stats. We simply lost to a very good side.

We can hold our heads high after the whistle was blown, for there were no failures. Every player gave it all they had. In the end, just as we feared, they had more.

Could you imagine Bayern selling Kane in the January transfer window and not bringing in a replacement. Their supporters wouldn’t stand for it.

Celtic sell Kyogo and not a fan demo or banner, it’s just accepted.

Bayern have a board and a support with an elite mentality, whereas Celtic are still years behind in their mentality of what it means to be an elite club.

Ach well, St Tam’s, fuck ‘im then he must be pure shite! The guy has no chance when everything he does is scrutinised and criticised, and this has always been my point. I agree I’d like to see a better LB at the club cos some folk, yersel included, seem to just look for his faults and are ready to pounce as soon as he makes one.
I hope KT hits the ground running!!

San Luiw,

And get the next appointment badly wrong and the huns take full advantage by winning trophies regularly again, handing them the exact thing they are praying for! No one wants us to change manager more than the huns do.

Brendan is the sole elite manager working in Scotland, we are lucky to have him!

A difficult game for a striker against that quality of team, when we’re not in possession of the ball that often, and the Munich CB was exceptional

I wouldn’t change BR but I’d like to see some versatility from him. Making changes on the hour when they should at least be done at the break. The tippy tappy build up from the keeper to the centre backs, creating self inflicted pressure from the opposition, I cannae look sometimes. We don’t have the skills to do it properly nor a number 6 who can bring the ball out and find a man. Callum ends up knocking it to Taylor then points, Taylor either knocks it back to Trusty or when he does become adventurous, knocks it down the line and out for a throw.
I was relieved with the result last night cause I thought we were going to get an absolute doing. But Brendan got it wrong with his starting eleven and waited far too long ( as per) to change it up.
Maeda has been terrorising opposition as a number 9 for weeks, why play safe? We had to go for it at home but for 70mins we sat back and looked in awe.
Will Brendan go for it next Tuesday? I doubt it very much. Probably start with the same starting 11 out of stubbornness .
I like have Brendan steering the ship but his refusal to see changes when required does my head in

In the 2023/24 financial year, FC Bayern Munich achieved a record total revenue of €1.017 billion. Within this, the club reported a net profit of €43.1 million, marking a 21% increase from the previous year.

This financial success underscores Bayern Munich’s robust economic health, even during a season without major trophies. The club’s diversified revenue streams, including matchday earnings, sponsorships, media rights, and merchandising, have contributed to this strong performance.

Notably, Bayern Munich continues to operate debt-free, maintaining its financial independence and stability.
#########

We make even more profit from a tenth of Bayern’s revenue. Therein lies the problem. An upgrade on Greg Taylor I don’t think addresses the issue

I’m not saying we should replace him. However, I also don’t subscribe to the ” we’re lucky to have him” camp either. Steady improvement in Europe and CL qualification are the least I’d expect from him. Winning Trebles are no longer the marker of a great Celtic manager, not when we tower over every single club in our league. Not anymore, so poor is the opposition in Scotland. Sadly.

Our PLC are cautious. When Ange went, they took the sensible decision and went with what they know. But it’s a safe decision and it suits Celtic and it certainly suits BR. Otherwise, he would not have come back

However, if you’re asking me are there better managers out there in our price range, then yes, I’d have to say there are. But it’s not my job to appoint them or to return shareholders dividends, record profits, high yield interest accruments etc ..

Football is a game of small margins. If Idah doesn’t stray offside it’s 1-0 after 30 seconds. VAR reckon it’s a penalty but the ref disagrees.
Ex refs Conroy and Roache both said it’s a penalty.

I don’t know why Idah made that run. It was obvious that Kuhn was going to have a shot.

I don’t get BR. He probably spent many hours preparing for this game and he sticks Taylor at LB. He’s decent enough for the SPFL but he’s nowhere near that level.
I reckon if Schlupp had played those two goals probably aren’t scored.

If Taylor IS going he shouldn’t be starting another game as far as I’m concerned. Schlupp should start every remaining game and then we can see if he’s worth retaining for next season to compete with KT.
Those two would be a considerable upgrade on what we’ve had to date.

Billy Bhoy…so Schlupp, who’s played about 120 minutes total this season would’ve stopped Kane scoring even although Kane wouldn’t have been his man! That’s some assumption and conclusion you’ve made there! And if Idah hadnt made a run that he’s coached to do every day, Kuhn’s goal would’ve counted! Aye, it’s easy this fitba game…nae idea why we’re not all coaches in the Champion’s League!! 👍😁

I have some sympathy for GT in that he has had many good games domestically and BR values the attacking options GT brings but defensively because of his height and build he is not up to the standard required especially in Europe.

It is goals lost on the LHS some of which are down to GT that get remembered. Unlike Julius Caesar where

The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones.

Poor GT”s evil lives with him alive in supporters memories.

Auldheid…I get it, mate, I really do get it! But the abuse GT gets is because people are waiting for his mistakes and when they happen it reinforces peoples’ thoughts about him. He does a cellular lot of good stuff in the game, lots of it unselfish which can go unnoticed, but still as soon as a mistake is made it he gets it in the neck. No doubt you’ve got a fable or a name for it. 😉😁

That passing at the back led to the last minute winner v Young Boys.

BR is methodical in his approach to the game.

The trouble comes in Europe where what works in Scotland ie majority possession, is reversed by clubs like Bayern, Real Madrid ie clubs who can afford better players than Celtic.

We did not have a go until last 20 minutes because Bayern had most of the ball under control in the first 70.

BR domestic method does not work in Europe against the top teams.

Hindsight is very easy to do after the event.
At the top level within the game, preparation beforehand, holds far more value.
Mistakes made will get punished to a far higher degree, if everyone from coaching, management decisions, and players following suit, are not all on the same page?

Again at the highest level, to many questions remains, without solution on sight for my liking.

Didn’t like ourselves taking the approach of trying to plug gaps moreso, than actually trying to get closer to the bayern players, to win turnover ball and allowing Maeda and kuhn to have a bigger attacking impact within the game.
Especially with ourselves at home.
Playing like an away team in a home fixture is totally foreign to ourselves and still struggling to understand why it was applied for so long last night, and in return taking our support out of the equation, especially when they were required on the night imo?

The changes with Jota and schulpp also coincided with a different approach taken by ourselves, in getting closer to bayern players and actually winning tackles, to recycle the football quicker and get ourselves upon the front foot.
The question still bugging myself, is as to why such an approach that we finished with, wasn’t applied at the start of the game?

To much trying to put square pegs into round holes, that has some way to go, before actually winning games like last night, can start becoming a reality.

Our coaching set up has remained the same for the past 4 years in how we still intend to play out from the back, and trying to play through teams.
The warning signs were badly on show against the scum at the shithole, and still evident again last night, even if not as bad, it still produced nothing for way too long also.

If last night was nothing more than a containment job, in keeping the tie still alive, then fine, mission accomplished.
I still believe that we could have tried better than getting an honourable defeat imo?
Can’t fault our players for the efforts applied from themselves either, even if some of the decision making was horrendous at times also

Johnno…the stats don’t back up your containment theory! Bayern 10 shots against Celtic’s 9. We had the ball in the net after 26 seconds. We had an elongated VAR penalty check. And not wanting to go all Flip Flop on ye but our expected goals and expected assists, from both open play and set plays, were all higher than Bayern’s.
At the end of the day we were playing a squad worth 7 or 8 times ours. We expect to beat the Huns because we’ve got better players. It stands to reason the opposite is true when we come up against teams like Bayern or Villa!

I do have a name for it. It is called confirmation bias.

Confirmation bias is the tendency to search for, interpret, favor and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one’s prior beliefs or values.

This explains that if a core belief, for whatever reason, is GT is not of the required standard then any .mistakes that can be attributed to him are looked for and put focus on to confirm the core belief.

The good is discounted as it is not sought or seen if it counters the bias.

It’s human nature at work. We all do it.

AJ had that role in the first half.
How AJ and Engels ended up marking each other in the centre and leaving kane totally unmarked is schoolboy levels?

This use of an attacking midfielder, with Hatate last night, trying to imply a non existence press.
Has been doing my head in, for years now within European football, and making ourselves to easy to play out against better footballing teams.
Hardly helps at the other end, that our CBs can’t or won’t hit a pass of any distance, to actually pick out a player in a more advanced attacking position either.
Big difference between what other top teams are capable of doing, yet we can’t or won’t?

McCaff

Mike…I witness it on here just about every day, as no doubt you do. Possible purpose? I’m really not sure but I do think there is an unwarranted, disproportionate amount of criticism towards Taylor. Perhaps it’s the fact he used to be a hun (small h, deliberately!)
I’m also astounded of forehead that you think to conflate the issue with the captain matters in any way whatsoever. To level criticism to any player is fine. GT seems to get much more than his fair share. I feel inclined to defend him as I think he gets a rough ride!

Would go as far as suggesting that Brendan exhibits an inferiority complex when up against the Euro elite clubs. He plays the opposition name and not their players or manager. That fear is transmitted to our players.

At times last night Celtic players just kicked the ball in the direction they were facing. Anxiety attacks in abundance.

I’m sure there were more than just a handful of Munich supporters who raised eyebrows when Vincent Kompany was appointed to follow on from Tuchel. They could have appointed Lenny Lederhosen and Brendan would still have been as timid and fearful as ever.

Perhaps our boss needs a therapy session with Neil Lennon and Gordon Strachan, to help rid him of the fear.

There is a reason we play like an away team at home against top teams.
It’s simple – they have much better players than we do, technically, physically and mentally which is why they get paid more than Celtic can afford to pay.

Auldeid, McCaff,

You have not really picked up on my thought process. Or more to the point, Brendan’s thought process.

RB Leipzig are currently fourth in the Bundesliga, albeit miles behind BM. We were outstanding against them a few months ago, playing with a focus, determination, and cohesion .

But, put the name Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, or PSG, in front of Brendan, and a different mindset appears to consume him. It’s as if we don’t really deserve to be on the same pitch a those clubs. Just a wee club, from a wee country, in a rubbish league.

To break through our current glass ceiling better players will be required, without doubt. Maybe even a year when the financials are just break even, or, god forbid, we make a small loss.

McCaff

Come on JimDom, we’re all looking for the same thing here but Neuer, Knae, Olise, Kimmich, Goretzka, Sane, Gnabry! Against our bhoys! Upamecano at centre back cost half as much as our entire squad! Muller on the bench!
It’s about realism. So, if you get real we might be able to understand your thought process! 😉

Seriously!!

With such a theory in place, then cup shocks and surprising league results wouldn’t exist at all within the game?

You don’t win to many games with taking an admiration process for the opposition, by sitting off them, and no signs of a counter attacking game to be seen either.

Took 70 minutes for the different approach to be applied, and then we started to look like ourselves moreso.

Yet chasing the game at that stage, and still are in the course of the overall tie.

One of these 4 will eventually end up at the Bigotdome.

As for us in the summer play off rounds, at the moment we are likely to play Slavia or Sparta Prague, Red Star Belgrade, or Dinamo Zagreb. Tough, but not insurmountable if we beef up the team in the summer. This season’s CL has been so enjoyable, and such a money spinner, it is now unthinkable that we miss out next time around. And I bloody well hope the Celtic Board think the same way! apologies for the delay in responding. Been a crazy 24 hours here. The City is installing new gas meters in the area. Yesterday was my turn. After they installed it, they saiid they couldnt turn the gas back on as there was a gas leak. So no heat, or hot water. Got a guy to come and fix it last night. But he said it was a two man job, and since the snow storm of the season started last night at dinner time, they had no one else to help. So been without gas, heat, stove, or hot water since yesterday. Had to do a run to the hardware store in the snow to het enough space heaters to ensure the pipes didn’t put freeze, and had to get up every few hours to throw wood on the fire!

And the gas guy is coming back this morning (hopefully), and we got a foot of snow, so I just had to clear a 125’ driveway so he can get his van in. If these buggers dont show up today, I may be back on here, asking if any of you lot know a good lawyer, cos Im going to murder somebody!
