The Nearly Men
Morning,all.
Last night saw one of the game’s great clubs visit our own great club, and what a show was on offer. We started the game like a bullet from a gun, with Kühn going on one of his runs across the edge of the area before firing it low into Neuer’s bottom corner-after only 25 seconds! Sadly, Idah had strayed into the keeper’s line of sight, and it was rightly ruled off.
Even more sadly, that was about as good as it got for us in the first half!
I didn’t check the first half stats, but they would have been heavily in favour of Bayern. They were passing us off the pitch, while all we could do in response was pass the ball off the pitch. Backs to the wall stuff for the entire remaining 44 minutes. And just when it looked like we were gonna go into the break on level terms-we lost focus and lost a goal.
How simple and straightforward it was too, and therefore completely avoidable. A simple enough long ball to the edge of the area on our left. Olise-who only a few years ago was playing for Reading!-picked it up and tried to cut inside Taylor. Instead,it ricocheted back to his right foot and he simply slammed it into the net! Seven bloody seconds before the break anaw!!!
Still,we had another 45 minutes to either endure or come up with an equaliser. Instead, our old failing at corners reared its ugly head again. Who leaves Kane unmarked in the six yard box, ffs? Simple answer to that one is-our defence, that’s who! He certainly didn’t need to be asked twice, just fired it into the net as he has done now for years. I mean, this is basic stuff, Celtic. As is keeping your concentration when you have just lost a goal. Again, we lose them in clutches. Even with the HT break to consolidate.
Quite honestly at that stage I was fearing a doing, considering how the match was going. We couldn’t get our foot on the ball, string a few passes together, create a chance. Bayern were doing it for fun. And clearly having fun too. And then, about ten minutes into the half, a potential lifeline. A lengthy VAR check for a foul by Upemecano on Engels. A stamp on the foot. The referee was called to his monitor-and we know how this usually plays out. Well, usually. Not this time. Referee stuck with his original decision.
In truth, I didn’t see anything to claim for, not until I saw the replay. I think we had a very good case, and can feel bloody hard done by on this one. It did seem to galvanise us into some action though, and not before time. A few minutes later, Taylor was off for Schlupp and Jota came on for Idah-replacing Maeda on the left, who moved into the central role. The Bayern CBs, about four metres tall the pair, must have thought their work was done for the night, just this tiny wee fella to concern us, haha. Well, the joke’s on them.
For starters, Upemecano was way short with a pass back. Daizen doesn’t need much of an opportunity, and he’d been waiting all night for this one. He robbed Neuer and rounded him, but took it well wide in the process. In fairness, he was probably hoping for a rash challenge-I know I was! His effort squirmed along the line to safety.
Next up from the bench was Yang for Kühn, who had persevered without much to show for it. I admit to liking the wee fella, but I don’t think he is at his best on the right. And he’s only 22yo,give the lad a chance! No matter, he poppped up a couple of minutes later as a stramash developed from a corner. His shot was probably sliding past, but Maeda stuck the nut in it and diverted it from close range into the net.
1-2 and game on! The crowd surged back into life, the players surged back into life, and now it was Bayern holding out. What a turnaround, but the job only part done. We needed the equaliser, for sure. We definitely threw everything at it, Bayern being rocked but not rolled, Kane being flattened.
AJ took a belt from the edge of the box. Had it gone in, it would have burst the net on its way to raising the roof! It was not to be, as Neuer parried it away for yet another corner. The ref gave us another seven minutes with which to find it, but the equaliser simply would not arrive. It wasn’t to be our night after all.
I can’t grudge Bayern their victory, given their performance for most of the game was miles better than ours. But I doubt they’d have grudged us that equaliser, given the effort we put in to find it. And to keep the score down at the other end! This was a very very good side we took on, and we acquitted ourselves well. But the scoreline doesn’t lie, and neither do the stats. We simply lost to a very good side.
We can hold our heads high after the whistle was blown, for there were no failures. Every player gave it all they had. In the end, just as we feared, they had more.

Seriously!!
With such a theory in place, then cup shocks and surprising league results wouldn’t exist at all within the game?
You don’t win to many games with taking an admiration process for the opposition, by sitting off them, and no signs of a counter attacking game to be seen either.
Took 70 minutes for the different approach to be applied, and then we started to look like ourselves moreso.
Yet chasing the game at that stage, and still are in the course of the overall tie.
====
The odd unexpected result is what makes football what it is.
Just enough uncertainty to have us watching.
However I subscribe to the Gordon Strachan notion that the team with players that run fastest , tackle hardest and jump highest (not necessarily in that order) wins.
Bayern stopped doing that from last 20 but in the 7 minutes of added time resorted more to earlier form.
Delighted Celtic gave them pause to think in last 20 but the team meeting the Strachan criteria won.
AFTERNOON ALL AND JIM AND MAGUA was pleasantly surprised by our bhoys last night especially the last 20 minutes we had bayern rattled, nearly lionesque but not quite😎😎another 3 or 4 quality players and we just might get in with the big boys🙏 but that all depends on the board spending some serious money,I wont hold my breath.H.H.

apologies for the delay in responding. Been a crazy 24 hours here. The City is installing new gas meters in the area. Yesterday was my turn. After they installed it, they saiid they couldnt turn the gas back on as there was a gas leak. So no heat, or hot water. Got a guy to come and fix it last night. But he said it was a two man job, and since the snow storm of the season started last night at dinner time, they had no one else to help. So been without gas, heat, stove, or hot water since yesterday. Had to do a run to the hardware store in the snow to het enough space heaters to ensure the pipes didn’t put freeze, and had to get up every few hours to throw wood on the fire!
And the gas guy is coming back this morning (hopefully), and we got a foot of snow, so I just had to clear a 125’ driveway so he can get his van in. If these buggers dont show up today, I may be back on here, asking if any of you lot know a good lawyer, cos Im going to murder somebody!

Hi Mike:
I’ve been through similar, in Glasgow, and here. Total power outage with no alternative sources, other than a gas generator – noisy, a pollutant, has to be kept a good distance from the house because of carbon monoxide, needs cables strung through open windows, heavy and difficult to move.
Did some research, and next Monday getting a Delta Pro Ultra ( check it out online ) installed by an electrician in the garage, with a 30 amp connection to the contact breaker box, and an interlock kit to prevent backflow when the power comes back on. It will be easy for wifie to use when I pop ma clogs. Silent, safe, very powerful heavy duty lithium battery back up for power. Comes in 15 sizes to power all types of homes, and can be easily recharged in several ways, including solar.
If you need help with the shoveling, McCaff is quite good at it.🤣😂😅
Good luck

“After they installed it, they saiid they couldnt turn the gas back on as there was a gas leak.”
That’s worse than incompetence, that’s bloody dangerous! Report them, then kick up f..k.

Im in the city, so outages never really last that long, so I have resisted buying a generator. But perhaps time to reconsider….
BMCUWP
to be fair, I dont think it was the installation. They did a pressure test after they install, and the pressure was low, so they then test the joints into the house to see whrere the leak is. and the leaking joints were inside the house in the basement My place is almost 100 years old, and has character … but with character comes aging. I havent changed the pipes since I was here, so they are at least 20 yard old … probably older. So, as much as the timing was shitty, if there was a gas leak, I think they did me a favour in finding it before anything bad happened. So I probably owe them a thanks .. but Im just a bit grumpy this morning!!
😆

For fk sake it was Bayern Munich we were playing, not Raith Rovers.
Our starting 11 and tactics were spot on .
We restricted them to few chances and then they sat off last 25 mins and we then stepped it up with the subs coming.
We easily could have got a draw in the end.
MCAFF im also in mike and some other posters camp, greg taylor very good SPLplayer even great spl player, in Europe he gets found out, not his fault but if the board had any notions of progressing in europe we need better,im sure you will be onto me shortly😎😎😎😎

Just read your post, after I was slagging you in mine.🤣
My bet would be on Haley’s Comet!🤣
Yes, I’m jealous. I think it will be a tough game on Saturday, and I’d love to jet in. Too many things to do, unfortunately. I am trying to manage a few days in April. I’ll keep you posted.

I’m a bit disappointed in that story, BP. I was sure you’d go over the falls in a barrel.
Here’s a picture of wee Joan nailing you into the barrel last time you did it. 😂😂
Penalty to Real Sociedad vs Midtjylland.
1-0
Fenerbache 1-0 Dusan Tadic – still a great player.
Vikingur 1 Panathinaikos 0
Abu Fani playing well for Robbie Keane’s team, Ferencvaros.
We scouted him years ago. Built like Neil Lennon, but a lot quicker.
And Abu Fani makes it 1-0 up on Viktoria Plzen.
SOL yes thats me, didn’t know you had a photo of it😎😎😎😎

Incredible strike by TSC to make it 1-0 over Jagiellonia.
Just like Olise last night, but from the left.
Real Sociedad 2-0 up in Denmark. Brilliant solo goal by Japanese winger Taku.
Poles equalize in Serbia.
TSC 1 Jagiellonia 1
Celje 1 APOEL 1
Some of the Europa League refereeing is deplorable.
Midtjylland pull one back. 1-2 vs Sociedad.
Molde centerback red card for bringing down Shamrock Rovers Noonan while last man.
Big opportunity for Rovers in Norway.
Dzeko makes it 2-0 Fenerbache. Still a player.
Union Saint Gilloise score against Ajax, chalked off for offside.
“Golazo basterts mocking Celtic for leaving Harry Kane so open.”

and deservedly so.
utterly ridiculous at any level let alone a striker like that in a game like that.
With these 2 leg ties, it is already obvious that many of the away teams are cautiously holding back, and treating the game as half a tie.
Goals per game are way down.
Penalty to Celje in Serbia.
Shamrock Rovers 1-0 up in Norway. 16 year old Noonan scores in debut.
Celje 2 Jagiellonia 1.
Fenerbache 3 Anderlecht 0. Stunning header from 16 yards from Moroccan striker, El-Nesryi.
Hope Sevco draw them.
Lower numbers than I expected but hey, ho, 2 hours left to vote SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM
Vikingur 2 Panathinaikos 0. Game being played in Finland, rather than Iceland.
