Distant relatives
I’m a Celtic supporter, and notice I didn’t specifically state a Glasgow Celtic supporter, there’s many different offshoots and cousins, of course I wish all in the family well. So imagine my surprise at discovering a distant relative through mere chance, and then imagine my double surprise when they gladly embraced my reaching out and corresponded.
Ill leave the good representative of West Allotment Celtic to speak for himself and the Club, and ask you to contribute to their noble cause if at all possible. Details below. The Chairman and Club Historian couldn’t have been more helpful in answering my questions, many thanks, and they will be looking in at responses.
Mahe.

1,,,Given the name and club strip, I’ll assume it was a Celtic fan(s) who founded the club. What can you tell us about your founder(s)?
Weirdly, the naming of the club was done on a whim rather than due to any allegiance to another club. In fact, “Celtic” was a strange choice given that the club is rooted in Primitive Methodism – rather a long way from the usual Catholic connotation! Despite West Allotment being a small village there had been several clubs prior to “Celtic” and most suffixes had been used up, so the founders settled on “Celtic” as it was unused and in fashion at the time (1928). Also, the green and white hoops were only adopted in the 1990s, largely because people expected us to turn up in green and white and it avoided clashes with most other clubs. Previously, the club had worn black and white stripes and, even earlier, sky blue and claret. That said, a change strip in the 1950 was green and white quarters.
2,,,Glasgow Celtic have a long and illustrious tradition of playing free flowing attacking football. Was this tradition passed down or desired to the best of your knowledge?
I think all clubs would aspire to playing flowing football but, given Allotment’s status, the style has changed to suit circumstances down the years. The home pitch, up until 1968 was called “Rowland’s Farm Ground” and it lived down to its name! Brazil ’70 would have struggled to play flowing football on it! That said, Allotment were successful on it (and away from home too). In more recent times, (mainly the “noughties”) manager Terry Mitchell had the team playing a fast, passing game that was successful in gaining the club promotion to the Northern League. Even more recently, Jay Bates led the side to a promotion, despite Covid, and the team scored a hatful of goals (last season saw wins by 10-1, 7-1 and 9-0) playing the aforementioned fast and flowing football.
3,,,The Green and White Hoops have became iconic, found worldwide, and celebrate Celtic’s Irish roots. Has West Allotment Celtic ever faced abuse or hostility due to wearing the mighty Hoops?
No we’ve never had any issues at all, but as a nomadic club we have picked up a number of distant fans partly due to the green and white hoops – we have a few that keep in touch from Ireland.
4,,,Glasgow Celtic Supporters constantly bemoan our lack of involvement in our club’s direction, there’s a long standing disconnect between fan and boardroom. How much of an input does the local community have in your club?
Interestingly enough this has been a big area of change in the last three months. In November, the club committee agreed to fold the club after hitting a financial brick wall and an engaging committee with no new people coming in to help run the club. This is where I became involved again (I was previously involved with the club ten years ago, as relatives of mine were founding members back in 1928) and proposed a very different business model that gave the community complete insight and control in partnership with my non football magazine The Football Pink. https://thefootballpink.co.uk/ Allotment has switched to a fan ownership model, with a behind the scenes documentary being filmed – full details here https://wacowners.co.uk/become-an-owner/?mepr-unauth-page=611&redirect_to=%2F This now means that individuals across the UK are joint owners of the club, giving the community more say than ever before. This particularly was noticeable when a match of ours was called off recently due to goose excrement on the pitch resulting in media coverage on Talk Sport, the Daily Mirror and local press – as a result we ran a raffle with entrants from Slovenia, Ireland, Germany, Spain, USA and Canada to name a few!
5,,,On our website the general feeling is that grassroots football in Scotland is under-resourced, under funded, and on the slide. What’s your take on amateur football, where it stands and where it’s going?
Grassroots football is broken, and that is one of the reasons behind our switch to a fan owned model. Too many clubs are struggling under rising costs, a lack of volunteers and a lack of resources (financial but also well maintained pitches etc). This comes against a backdrop of professional football where there has never been so much money. As a club, we believe there will be a fundamental switch in how grassroots operates in the next ten years – or clubs will simply die.
6,,,Do your games ever get scouted by professional clubs?
Yes with the north east being a hot bed of football, there’s always scouts at matches looking for the next Jamie Vardy. The league also picks up it’s fair share of players that have dropped out of the professional game from academies.
7,,,How can our readers help West Allotment Celtic?
Any readers who are looking to support another Celtic would be very welcome to become part owners of the club – details here. https://wacowners.co.uk/become-an-owner/?mepr-unauth-page=611&redirect_to=%2F
Maybe even some of your readers will like a trip down at some point to see us.

£20m plus bid for either and our “model”
dictates they go.
As Ange, I think,said – don’t get too attached!

A bit too black and white for me.
By having a big cash reserve Celtic can offer more to persuade a player to stay especially if spend to remain at an appropriate CL level. (Yup we’ll see)
However what if a
players does not want to stay for a host of understandable reason?
That takes the decision to keep out of Celtic’s hands but then requires them to get as much as they can to keep the coffers at a not having to sell level and season on season improve the level of players signed.
That is why the next transfer window will be telling.
Sell to make profit and increase share value or invest to increase share value through football performance .

On your lead article some of the comments based on who are the new guys resonate with myself.
What I think is needed is the formation of a body who can claim full representational status.
I came to that conclusion having dealt with CST, CSA and GB over the years. The all are locked in by their own policies and agendas which prevent effective action to bring the Board to account.
Any new group has to have some locus ie a right to speak for others for existing, but rather than starting from scratch an alternative is to restructure what we have around the CST as a group with most claim to locus.
I put that to them at end of Covid season when anger at the Board was very high but it was never pursued by them to my knowledge but you can point the potential new group to
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IAPRvu6G7NNOzUiTCFOxAcLpmU_2PQel/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=107947982974245186134&rtpof=true&sd=true
who might want to proceed with engagement with CST/CSA and GB on the subject of locus.

An informative lead article. Obviously the biggest ‘other’ Celtic, was Belfast Celtic. The Belfast Celts, of course, gave us that great gift from God, the late, great, Charles Patrick Tully. Does anyone remember Tully’s Bar in Motherwell? What a place that was. A real home from home, whenever the Celts were playing at Fir Park.

As it’s St Valentine’s Day, please give Joan a big hug fae me. A big bouquet of roses is on its way to Cheshire. 💚
Administration Day is always a bittersweet day for me. Good, in the sense of that being the start of the process leading to the liquidation of the Huns. Bad, in the sense that the illegal creation of Sevco should never have been allowed. Shame on those at Celtic Park who collaborated in the process which allowed this to happen. They know who they are.

And who is the mediator in the conflict of dialogue?
Is that basis for Trust predicated on accepting hostile, challenging rhetoric ?If so then there is little likelihood of anything other than complete disregard for that singular ( on SC) unpleasant approach.
All things considered I think we may be looking at the following starting eleven for tomorrow…
Schmeichel, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Scales, Schlupp, McGregor, Engels, McCowan, Yang, Idah, Jota
Again, all things considered and being well then Wednesday should see…
Schmeichel, Johnston, Carer-Vickers, Trusty, Schlupp, McGregor, Engels, Hatate, Kuhn, Maeda, Jota
All just in my humble opinion of course…

Agree, said so earlier but Trusty for CCV for me.
Thsnks bigpacky. I’m sure I’ll enjoy the game. A visit to Parkhead (or is it Celtic Park) what’s not to like.

I went for big carpet slippers as two left footed centre halves always gives me the fear. I would also have made a case for Bernardo starting both games had he not been crocked.
Domestic sustainability rules in England remain in trial mode although not UEFA FSR that applies only to top clubs qualifying to play in UEFA competition.

Not surprising players don’t want rules that stop them being overpaid. Greedy bassas encouraged by supporters who cgaf about fair play.
Bernardo would definitely have been in.
Our missing 6th midfielder definitely weakens us.

Yup. That is why I highlighted the dialogue decalogue to introduce an alternative to conflict.
To introduce the choice dialogue provides.
To continue with separation or try to acheive at-one-ment.
I was watching a BBC2 documentary on South Pacific and it’s island where one small island chose community unity and another separation.
One still thrives the other died.
Guess which one is thriving and why.

Talking of ‘Celtic’ teams, there was actually a team called Ardrossan Celtic in the early nineteen hundreds. That’s Ardrossan where the Garryowen comes from and the town that hadn’t a parish till 1939 and the local Catholic school was second hand ‘non-denomination’ (official speak for Protestant) school and was called Ardrossan Central R. C. School… none o’ yer saints names in Ardrossan… till the early fifties when it became St. Peter’s! There’s a tale…
Ardrossan Celtic was not reformed after the Second World War.

A true story for you.
Around 20 years ago, when my son was a teenager, I set him to work in our garden, trimming trees, cut the grass etc. When I got home from work he told me something that made me laugh. It had been a really hot day (around 35C) and while he was working he heard the bin men in the street. One of them saw him and rudely shouted at him to get him a drink of water.
”No problem,” said my lad and went into the back garden, filled a glass with water from the water butt and gave it to the scaffie, who drank it in one go then told my lad that it was the most refreshing drink of water he’d had for ages.
The butt was filled with rainwater collected via a drainpipe off a tiled roof, so plenty of minerals for his gut to process. 😂😂
SOL yes, bet he enjoyed it ❤❤❤❤

You are right, it is life’s dichotomy which takes any discussion or dialogue away beyond football into the dichotmy that separates our wider world.
What I am trying to establish with SC readership as a whole not just the guys like yourself that provide an opportunity to engage which I appreciate is should I stop drawing attention to that wider dichotomy and just stick to football related comments and so fail to make the shadows becoming more real?
I don’t think I could do that to be honest. I can only post on how I see issues based on my experience which I share but get the sense some find the sharing boring and not what they come to SC to talk or more important think about.
I am very much aware of taking up readers time and would prefer not to if my input is wasting readers and my time.
Cosy Corner Bhoy, great to see you posting, went to ardrossan once via the electric brae, it was closed, but kilwinning was open😎😎😎❤❤

Some background on both Ardrossan Celtic teams. Bit confusing that the first AC team was founded in 1896 but appears to have played out a draw with Ardeer Rangers in 1890. Most likely a typo by the paper.
ARDROSSAN CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB 1896
The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald of 24 April 1896 carried the report below.
ARDEER RANGERS 2 – ARDROSSAN CELTIC 2
On Saturday (18 April 1890), a match between the Ardeer Rangers and Ardrossan Celtic took place at Stevenston and resulted in a draw, two goals each.
Ardrossan Celtic Football Club was founded in 1896 and played only one reported game.
Another Ardrossan Celtic Football Club played between 1901 and 1913.
ARDROSSAN CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB 1901-1913
The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald of 15 March 1901 carried the report below.
ARDROSSAN CELTIC 3 – TROON PORTLAND 0
Ardrossan can boast of another football club which promises to be a rival to the Winton Rovers. The new combination will be known as Ardrossan Celtic and on Saturday (9 March 1901) the ‘bhoys’ tried conclusions with Troon Portland at Caledonian Park. The Celts won the match by three goals to nil.
That game would have been played on a field in Montgomerie Street opposite Kilmahew House whose site is now occupied by the Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Service.
In a report on a match between Ardrossan Celtic and Winton Rovers on 20 April 1901, the Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston Standard of 27 April 1901 reported that Ardrossan Celtic ‘have at length secured a field. They have christened it North Crescent Park. It is behind the Caledonian Station. It will be opened some night next week.’.

Not everything one projects on here gets a response.
It doesn’t need to, folk filter according to interest.

Well understanding and knowledge can be found in the most unexpected places.
I happened upon such an occurrence revisiting some old ‘70’s music.
Guess that’s what makes enlightenment such an energising force.
Sol Kitts: Thanks for the extra info on Ardrossan Celtic – the two of them! Knew nothing at all about the first one and the second I only recall from my Dad’s account who said that our neighbour was goal keeper with them- tho not the one in the report- and that they folded at the start of the war, obviously he meant the First and I thought the second. It least it proves it wasn’t my imagination 😀
Celtic 2 Glasgow City 2.
Fair result in a Curates Egg of performance by Celtic.
Good in parts but stinking in others especially passing ball to City.
Breaking news …. and I have only just skimmed headlines, so, dont have all the details yet … but…..
Previously, the tribuanl had ruled that Man City’s challenge of the APT was successful on three points. The question was what impact that could have. The league had argued that those three points could be struck out but the rest of the APT remain. The tribunal has now held that the three sections cannot be separated from the balance of the APT such that the whole set of regulations has to be struck.
huge win for Man City.
