Put yer money where your mouth is Celtic!
We’ve been in this position before. Talented players making their mark domestically and on the continent, squad needing not broken up or pushed out the door but rather reinforced with more quality in key positions, a Celtic minded manager with a grit and determination towards making our beloved a genuine force against any club in any league.
We were handed the slow lane just over 20 years ago, it was a cruel and bitter blow to see the juggernaut sold for parts rather than refurbished to a better standard, but yet form then to now many building blocks have been laid, foundations that are supposed to keep Celtic from deliberately veering into the slow lane again.
It’s widely recognized the Seville team peaked that season, but this bunch haven’t. That squad hit its height, that group of players gave their all, but their value was decreasing, wage bill high, and the slow lane was to balance the books.
That process lead to this point, it took a while but football operations and the accounting department hit their jackpot this season. This campaign was very memorable, very significant, and very lucrative.
It’s widely said our manager never had equal/top talent to call up from the bench on Tuesday. Since Seville with players being younger in general plus the five subs rule, it’s a squad game more than ever.
And there’s no financial crisis looming with the highly paid first team about to hit mid 30’s and all leave for free.
Celtic are in a position of strength.
To enter the slow lane would be unforgivable, and inexplicable.
To continue to invest, which is paying off handsomely, would go a long way to show boardroom and supporter ambitions are aligned.
A long way towards trust and faith between both.
And not only that, our stock has never been higher meaning the odds of good investments just improved.
There wasn’t a single broadcaster, podcast, agent and player cum observer who wasn’t transfixed by events in Munich. Games like that can sway the public to have admiration, and a previously out of reach player to put pen to paper.
And there’s the elephant in the room, our managers short length of contract.
I imagine a spree of talented 22/23 year olds arriving would not only signify backing your man, but increase his desire to hang around and scale higher up the mountain.
Good players in their early 20s with talent and legs, exactly what our bench was missing in Munich.
The summer window and a contract extension will be inexplicably linked for better or worse.
Traditionally it’s at this point I would hope for the best and prepare for the worst, but on this occasion I’m not accepting that at all. Not while are in the rudest of health, not while squad improvement is easily affordable.
It’s said Ange exposed Celtic’s lack of ambition, well Brendan has certainly put those ambitions front and centre.
There’s no hiding place, no excuses can be made.
It’s literally time for a club ‘that aims’ to be world class in everything we do to put (some of) their money where their mouth is, because you were 3/4/5 signings away from shaking the entire footballing world just days ago.
This summer transfer window should be all about one thing and one thing only, Celtic flexing their muscle.
“We’ve got something special here” said the King of Kings, 20 odd years later of getting the books, signing philosophy, and hierarchy correct,, it’s ringing loud and true once again. We’ve no barriers, no accountants in the way.
Our glass ceiling was one blow away from shattering for good.
This summer must bring the final hammer, or else.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #42 BAYERN MUNICH 1 CELTIC 1 (KUHN)*
Good evening, friends.
Talk about still being in the Champions league for as long as possible – our 10th game and we took it to the very last minute. Heartbreak at the time but a lot of positives to look back on.
Our most disciplined, professional first half of the season saw us remain defensively sound and pressing at the correct ‘trigger moments’ (copyright BR). And we had the 4 clearest chances of the half, passed up in turn by McGregor, Kuhn, Maeda’s toenails and Maeda. I’ve said it before but it’s always these wee small margins on which games can turn. Bayern probably did come closest, however, in the 44th minute when Kane’s effort came off the bar. But that’s still a shot off target and we went into the break goalless and full of confidence.
We had a scare right at the start of the second half when Bayern broke our lines but Kasper stood big and made a fine save. Brendan broke with tradition and made his first substitution a minute early with Idah replacing Jota in the 59th minute. Just 4 minutes later big Adam played a forward ball towards Maeda and Daizen then won 2 successive 40-60 duels to play the ball towards the advancing Kuhn. The defender should have done better but that’s not to take anything away from Nicolas’ fine composed finish and suddenly Celtic were level in the tie and Old Man Jobo had his wished for moment of jumping about daft! And unlike last week’s, this time Kuhn’s opener counted.
Just 5 minutes after scoring, Kuhn had to be replaced, holding his calf and surprisingly this turned out to be our second and final substitution which saw the introduction of Yang.
On 70 minutes we had another nearly moment. Engels from the half way line out on the right fired a brilliant curling crossfield pass into the area which was met at full stretch by the diving Maeda but the ball went straight into the goalkeepers arms.
With 15 remaining Bayern were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal following a tiring tackle by Engels. The wall did its job but from the rebound a fine curling shot was met by Kasper at full stretch to turn the ball out for a corner.
I’m not sure how many times I checked the clock during those latter stages but when the board went up to show 4 added minutes my mind drifted to extra time and which 4 fresh players we might be able to introduce. 3 minutes later and those thoughts evaporated. No blame on Kasper for me as his sole objective was to save the header. No blame either on CCV who put his own brakes on, probably worried that Kasper’s save might rebound off him. Unfortunately, the split second delay in getting the tackle in saw the ball rebound off Davies’ shin and into the net.
One final point to mention happened about 45 seconds before their goal. Maeda was caught in the face and fell to the ground clutching his head. TV pictures show the referee having a look at it (he points) but allows play to concede. Whilst I’m not sure that it was definitely a foul, there is absolutely no doubt that it was a head knock and I really expected the referee to stop play. Perhaps Maeda was guilty of getting back to his feet too quickly and not being cute enough to clutch his head?
So, our European adventures have come to an end for this season and whilst it has been a bit of a rollercoaster at times it has certainly been the most enjoyable campaign since Seville. And if we win our next 7 domestic league games (or alternatively win 8 out of the remaining 12) we will be rewarded with a one-off 2-legged play off tie to get a chance to do it all again next season!
We have now played 42 games this season, winning 30, drawing 8 and losing 4. We have scored 115 and conceded 36 (domestically it’s 100-19 and in Europe it’s 15-17).
Thank you so much to the 79 who voted this time around. Particular thanks to Flower Of The Rarest who sent me the 3000th voting email of the season. A lurker who votes after every single game, good or bad, so it’s a well earned 15 minutes of anonymous fame!

Schlupp*: 35
McGregor*: 38
Engels: 20
Hatate: 4
Kuhn: 4
Maeda: 27

PS The PLC are going to have to continue hoarding cash as The Rangers are about to receive a billion zillion dollar investment / buy out from American football’s 49er’s. Scotland’s impartial primary printed news paper (The DR) has revealed in a ‘Mammoth exclusive’ that top level discussions are in place regarding a multi million pound investment in Sevco by the Yankee football organisation’s 49er’s enterprises. Just why they’d be interested has yet to be revealed🤔😕

European football is the main reason why the Americans are interested in Sevco.
You see it even in Irish League football these days – outside investors pouring £millions into semi-professional football club, albeit on a smaller scale.
They are looking at potential income generated in the Europa League, and the other Mickey Mouse tournament.
Obviously investing in the zombie club, potential CL riches is the objective through larger investment.
I’ve noticed in recent weeks that a lot of their advertising has been American based, such as Kissimmee tourism, Miami.
It’s happening.

Interesting read this early in the day. Check the debt….
Good luck to any investors hoping to make money in Europe with regards to multiclub ownership like say SF 49ers
INEOS and Multi-Club Ownership: Potential UEFA Conflict
INEOS Group, led by billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is becoming a major player in European football. With ownership of OGC Nice (France) and a 25% stake in Manchester United, UEFA may soon have to decide whether these clubs can compete in the same European competitions.
—
Who Owns What?
OGC Nice (France): Acquired by INEOS in 2019.
Manchester United (England): In early 2024, INEOS completed a deal for a 25% stake in United, with control over sporting decisions.
Other Clubs: INEOS also owns Lausanne-Sport (Switzerland) and Racing Club Abidjan (Ivory Coast).
—
Why is This a Potential Problem?
UEFA rules prevent two clubs with the same owner from playing in the same European competition to avoid conflicts of interest. Since INEOS now controls sporting decisions at both Nice and Manchester United, this could lead to a UEFA investigation if both teams qualify for the Champions League or Europa League.
Possible Scenarios:
1. If Man United & Nice both qualify for the Champions League
UEFA could force INEOS to restructure ownership (like Red Bull did with Leipzig/Salzburg in 2017).
One club could be removed from the competition if UEFA believes INEOS exerts “decisive influence” over both.
2. If Man United is in the Champions League & Nice in the Europa League
They might both be allowed to compete, as UEFA’s strictest rule applies to clubs in the same tournament.
3. If UEFA enforces stricter rules on ownership
INEOS may be forced to sell Nice or reduce their influence at one of the clubs to comply.
—
What INEOS Might Do Next
To avoid UEFA sanctions, INEOS could:
Transfer Nice’s ownership to a separate legal entity.
Reduce their control at Nice, proving it operates independently.
Sell Nice if UEFA tightens its rules.
UEFA’s ruling will depend on how much control INEOS is seen to have over both clubs.
—
What’s Next for INEOS & UEFA?
UEFA has yet to make a formal decision, but if both Man United & Nice qualify for Europe in 2025-26, INEOS will likely have to prove they don’t control both clubs. This will be a key case in UEFA’s evolving stance on multi-club ownership.

Thanks. Yes it will be a very memorable away day trip for me
The 49rs have struck gold! What a bunch of nuggets! Massive investment in one of the biggest sporting institutions in Govan!! – The Daily Rager
The Dallas cowboys will be gutted!
In all seriousness, how many times are the Scottish sports press going to support their board’s attempts at fleecing their own?
After queens park it was going to take something eye-catching to get ra bears interested in paying to watch Celtic win another treble next season.
More proof that desperate peepul will buy any fantasy that promises to take away their pain.
Next season they will play a quarter back behind 3 linebackers, 4 running-backs in the middle and 3 wide receivers up front …everyone will be getting blitzed! Touchdown!!! 🏈🏈🏈
Is there a policy of deliberate limitation of our ambition by ensuring we finish almost every season with a major player sale.?
My interpretation is this is not the case.
We have operated a fairly successful player trading model that has meant significant one off sales, and it can be argued, led us year on year, via squad improvements, to the point where we will have accrued £38m in participation revenue plus another £10m plus in match day income, merchandise, enhanced sponsorship rewards etc. from the CL.
In the process we have received widespread recognition for our achievement in exceeding our seeding and competing well with top 5 league teams.
I’d say that has been a sensible, rewarding
policy and not restrictive.
Having the right man in charge to improve incoming talent is a vital component in the strategy. We are fortunate to have BR, or is that a deliberate part of the strategy? He is clearly remunerated appropriately and part of the decision making process on sales/ incomings.
Unfortunately a by product of success is interest in key players. Some of whom will be delighted to move for significant personal wealth reasons. The last, Matt, was not forced anywhere. He stated that he’d been in talks with Brighton for weeks and was obviously very happy to move there. Those sales happen because players want to move.
“Don’t get too attached” someone said.
What is required now is a clear vision and Board ambition to ensure, as best we can, qualification next year.
This summer will clearly indicate the direction of travel the club is willing to take.
There should be no limitation in seeking to emulate Feyenoord, Brugge, PSV and top 16 participation. Beyond that achieve coefficient improvement to secure a pot 2 level.
If a major sale happens we move on, we have done so quite successfully over the last few years.
It can’t be said those leaving have had similar success.
Just sayin’,
Noticed the daily record deliberately left out certain things (Ticket sales?) so that they could print a much smaller number. According to them we made £26m from the champions league.
Jeez, they are so predictable!
I won’t even give them a click!!
Good morning, friends.
In some ways the following attachment doesn’t really mean that much but I’m just continuing my wee Champions league project through to the end – here’s how the hypothetical league table now looks after the play off round…..
Stirring stuff as usual Mahe!
I wonder if the glass ceiling might have been shattered if Bernardo had been available and/or McCowan being given the last 15-20 minutes? The players had given everything, we were clearly hanging on and BRs reluctance to field Luke was, to me, his only failure on the night. I’d love to know why he made that decision.

Morning all,
Just Sayin,
I had our earnings in Cl before Bayern game as £38 million ( before gate money, hospitality, merchandising).
So take into Account the UEFA bonus and draw money, your €45 Million won’t be far away.
With the gate money etc added you should be talking 65 Million + 👍👍👍👍

Or about half of last season’s total revenue. No doubt some deductions required for squad, manager and Board(!) bonuses.
Doubles all round at the next Board meeting.
The model works. We have no alternative. It’s not the players leaving that’s the issue. It’s the players coming in.
BAD
If the 49ers deal comes through I can see Goldston being recalled. His ball handling skills would be invaluable!
The current Euro exchange rate is 1.20 so €45m is around £37.5m
Mahe
To enter the slow lane would be unforgivable, and inexplicable.
===
It is the last word that is key in what happens next.
If Celtic don’t back BRs unswerving intent to make Celtic a seasoned club (his words) that can take on the likes of BM how can Celtic possibly explain that to the support?
Further how would not meeting BR’s unswerving aim be seen by BR? If he left because no unswerving backing how would that be explained?
For that reason I’m optimistic that some of the areas needing attention will be addressed. Not necessarily spectacularly but incrementally via higher wages to keep those at “seasoned” level who dont want to leave a seasoned club as well as purchases of more like Engels capable of reaching seasoned level under BRs coaching.
I think the aim of being World Class might be better replaced by BRs words of reaching a seasoned level which is much more attainable and I think reasonable and acceptable to the support at large. Takes away a bat to hit the Board with.
That takes me to another SC point.
Bobby said in a response to a comment something on the lines that SC was set up on an anti board basis.
That is based on a narrative of past experience of The Board but in your blog you seem to recognise that going into the slow lane to act financially prudently has resulted in a stronger financial Celtic today that enables the opportunity to become a seasoned club at European level.
Where I’m going is that depending on the meaning given to whatever course Celtic take in the summer, if it is onwards and upwards does SC help create a new narrative based on a wider understanding that whilst there is always room for improvement, recruitment process being an obvious area, The Board are looking after the best interests of Celtic in the long term, not in lining their own pockets?
More of an interest in the discernible policies that have taken Celtic to the current Rubicon point and less on the nature of the individuals given the job of executing those policies but more on how well they have executed the policy based on knowing what the policies are, the thinking that created them and the processes designed to execute the policies.
Transparency will be essential in that respect.
In effect no division on a happy clapper/mineshafter labels basis that prevents delving further but with the aim of the kind of unity that will help Celtic become a seasoned club we can all support without a chasm of division.
Just something to think about SC”s raison d’etre but great blog that caused me to think ahead.
Great lead article Mahe.
My disappointment from Tuesday has passed, been replaced by hopeful optimism, misplaced or otherwise. I genuinely think we can do something in Europe, we kind of did, but something much bigger and longer lasting. I’m not talking about winning the CL but I’m talking about being a frequent last 8 team.
It’s a pity the parachute into Europa wasn’t available, as I think we would win it.
S L
If we were parachuted into the EL we’d be joined by :
Manchester City
Monaco
Juventus

Indeed but if we become a seasoned club at European level perhaps players like Engels that are not quite ” seasoned” but will become so under BR will be more willing to join?
The upside for them and Celtic being their increase in value that pays both them and Celtic after say 3 years.
Still need a sprinkling of KT experience types too, not necessarily ex Celts.
Don’t 49er’s enterprises own a 44% holding in Leeds Utd? If they plan to purchase / gain a similar level of investment in Der Hun Mk2 that could indeed be a bit of a game changer in the SPFL. Just what are UEFA rules about a new owner pumping money into a club, i seem to recall a clause where an owner can input serious money through a sponsorship deal via another company that they own 🤔

FSR on sponsorship requires that any amount pumped in reflects a true market value.
As I understand it the sum contributed cannot claim a butchers in Glasgow can pump in the same amount as a butchers at Harrods.
I think that was a charge laid at Man City door. That the sum City got from Emirates deal was way beyond the true value of the sponsoring.
There is an article I read about the consequences of the Man City decision on how clubs treat sponsorship money that gave me that view but I cannot remember which article. Might be a link to it in response to MIT.
I could not find the article I based my thinking on but this one is as good at interpreting the consequences of Man City decision and it’s limits.

On the last sentence; Celtic are the biggest risk/barrier to CL money which as matters stand opens the door to more patterns of assistance from referees and other unseen ways of mitigating that risk like applying club licensing rules with Nelson’s eye.
Another reason for Celtic signalling to any buyer it is going to cost more than we can afford to pay to take over, notwithstanding FSR limitations on player squad spending.
The last thing I want to see is a return to the season of honest mistakes.
Lets hope Celtic share that view given their stated involvement in the development of FSR.

I do not accept that trading Kyogo for Jota lessened our chances of beating Bayern. Its just a bat to beat The Board with.
What makes sense to me is not to spend money on chances of the £14m prize for beating Bayern which in reality turned out to be none but to add the winter transfer earnings to the cash that can be used in the summer to improve the chances of earning £43m from the CL next year.
With patience “now” becomes less important than later.
Its another case of the dreaded Zenmaster story of “we’ll see”.

Id rather play against clubs we have a reasonable chance of beating just to have a bite at giving the higher group a game.

An interesting read on Man Utds situation. Whilst they have to abide by PSR not FSR they are under domestic licensing strictures that Scottish clubs are not.
However those with UEFA ambitions are subject to FSR from which much of PSR follows so R2ngers will be as affected as much in terms of wage reduction as Man Utd are, only the scale differs.
Ive paid more attention to FSR football earnings regs than FSR debt regs but Im thinking that as the acceptable levels cover all clubs some with high debt levels chances are R2ngers are not in breach but I cannot say that with certainty.
This also caught my eye in terms of whom Celtic can reasonably be expected to beat in Europe.
“Maguire said: “A good season in the Champions League can be worth far in excess of £100m. By the time you combine gate receipts, sponsor bonuses and the prize money available, the numbers involved are eye-watering.”
In excess of £100M? That’s £57m more than Celtic can earn if £43m is accurate. What can Real earn?
Auldheid
“Id rather play against clubs we have a reasonable chance of beating just to have a bite at giving the higher group a game.”
Isn’t that what the new CL format allows?
Teams like Feyenoord Brugge PSV advancing at the expense of Man City, Juventus AC Milan.
We have achieved great things this year.
The learning curve is established, we now need to make sure we are armed appropriately to make incremental progress year on year.
Replicate the progress of those “lesser” teams above.

Yes the change in the CL format does what it says on the tin and is but one factor that affects policy going forward imo.
Hence my request to focus more on policy and thinking that forms it to understand what individual Celtic Executives are guided by.
I think expectations levels going forward need to be reasonable.
I would not be afraid to take on badly managed big earning clubs like Man Utd even with the CL circa £50M gap of what they might earn compared to us.
The money is not the only factor at play in determining the standard of the opposition which is not a bad thing for competitiveness. Man Utd in that report are accused of bad financial management. How does the Celtic Board compare from the slow lane perspective?
We have to look at what we did well and what we were not so good at in champions league.
We definitely improved at stilling our minds and this helped with better ball retention.
Our body posture could be a little more positive when receiving ball to add to our attacking prowess.
positionally we are much better.
No reason we can’t continue improving on above in SPL with acceptance of it being a higher risk.
it would help us be better prepared for European competition.
I thought McGregor was excellent on Tuesday but still think our central midfield area could be improved with a more tactically astute central pivot.
We could definitely improve our European standing with shrewd acquisitions but it’s dependent on a forward thinking board.

‘I’m hoping a different narrative is being formed as a result of a wider understanding of what works and what does not, some as a result of sharing our understandings and misunderstandings on SC.
I think your post is a positive contribution to the new narrative.

===========
I looked at the bench and concluded McCowan was not seasoned enough to compete at the speed needed to make a difference.
Perhaps BR who knows McCowan better thought the same. Would not get into a reasonable pressing position fast enough.
For those that are doing their own sums on European prize money, the bonus payments for drawing (€700k) or winning (€2.1m) only applied during the league phase. After that the rewards are just for progressing through each round. Our draw on Tuesday didn’t generate any bonus. Qualifying for the last 16 would have earned Celtic €11m. The subsequent bonuses are –
Qualify for quarters €12.5m
Qualify for semis €15m
Qualify for final €18.5m
Win the final €6.5m
Qualify for Super Cup €4m
Win Super Cup €1m
In the Europa League the sums are considerably lower. By finishing in the top 8 and therefore qualifying for the last 16 Sevco received €2.35m. Making the quarters, semi and final would get them €2.5m, €4.2m and €7m with a bonus of €6m for winning it. And then the Super Cup payments mentioned above.
Further progress in Europe is highly significant for such a cash strapped Klub.
Auldheid,
Luckily for UEFA Eintracht Frankfurt will win this seasons EL😂😅
Thereby avoiding the Nice/ Man U ownership and in the same competition next season issue

Hi Billy:
Wondered that myself. I can only think that he was hoping for one last inspirational move from a clearly exhausted Hatate or Engels. It is not the first time this season he has left Reo on when all around can see the guy is out on his feet.
Strange one.

Good morning, friends.
In some ways the following attachment doesn’t really mean that much but I’m just continuing my wee Champions league project through to the end – here’s how the hypothetical league table now looks after the play off round…..
—————————
Hi Jobo:
Thank you very much for preparing that table. It is both fascinating and informative. Brendan should take it, enlarge it, print 18 X 11 copies for each Board member, then say to them, “Just look at it – if you had given me more resources to strengthen the squad, as I asked, we could have been just 5 places higher, and earned many millions more. If you don’t do it this summer, I am offski.”
Thanks again Jobo,
P.S. Good idea to subdivide the original table into 3 sections. Oh! Wait!😂
