Put yer money where your mouth is Celtic!

We’ve been in this position before. Talented players making their mark domestically and on the continent, squad needing not broken up or pushed out the door but rather reinforced with more quality in key positions, a Celtic minded manager with a grit and determination towards making our beloved a genuine force against any club in any league.

We were handed the slow lane just over 20 years ago, it was a cruel and bitter blow to see the juggernaut sold for parts rather than refurbished to a better standard, but yet form then to now many building blocks have been laid, foundations that are supposed to keep Celtic from deliberately veering into the slow lane again.
It’s widely recognized the Seville team peaked that season, but this bunch haven’t. That squad hit its height, that group of players gave their all, but their value was decreasing, wage bill high, and the slow lane was to balance the books.
That process lead to this point, it took a while but football operations and the accounting department hit their jackpot this season. This campaign was very memorable, very significant, and very lucrative.
It’s widely said our manager never had equal/top talent to call up from the bench on Tuesday. Since Seville with players being younger in general plus the five subs rule, it’s a squad game more than ever.
And there’s no financial crisis looming with the highly paid first team about to hit mid 30’s and all leave for free.

Celtic are in a position of strength.
To enter the slow lane would be unforgivable, and inexplicable.
To continue to invest, which is paying off handsomely, would go a long way to show boardroom and supporter ambitions are aligned.
A long way towards trust and faith between both.
And not only that, our stock has never been higher meaning the odds of good investments just improved.
There wasn’t a single broadcaster, podcast, agent and player cum observer who wasn’t transfixed by events in Munich. Games like that can sway the public to have admiration, and a previously out of reach player to put pen to paper.

And there’s the elephant in the room, our managers short length of contract.
I imagine a spree of talented 22/23 year olds arriving would not only signify backing your man, but increase his desire to hang around and scale higher up the mountain.
Good players in their early 20s with talent and legs, exactly what our bench was missing in Munich.
The summer window and a contract extension will be inexplicably linked for better or worse.

Traditionally it’s at this point I would hope for the best and prepare for the worst, but on this occasion I’m not accepting that at all. Not while are in the rudest of health, not while squad improvement is easily affordable.
It’s said Ange exposed Celtic’s lack of ambition, well Brendan has certainly put those ambitions front and centre.
There’s no hiding place, no excuses can be made.
It’s literally time for a club ‘that aims’ to be world class in everything we do to put (some of) their money where their mouth is, because you were 3/4/5 signings away from shaking the entire footballing world just days ago.

This summer transfer window should be all about one thing and one thing only, Celtic flexing their muscle.
“We’ve got something special here” said the King of Kings, 20 odd years later of getting the books, signing philosophy, and hierarchy correct,, it’s ringing loud and true once again. We’ve no barriers, no accountants in the way.
Our glass ceiling was one blow away from shattering for good.
This summer must bring the final hammer, or else.

This just in — from BBC

A takeover of Rangers involving the San Francisco 49ers’ investment wing is expected to be completed between April and June, sources close to negotiations have said.

There is “broad agreement” between all parties, with current shareholders expected to sell all, or part, of their stake in the club in the coming months.
The prospective owners would acquire more than 50% of the Rangers shares while taking on the debt, much of it owed to former chairman John Bennett.
Paraag Marathe, the Leeds United chairman and the force behind 49ers Investments, the investment wing of the 49ers NFL franchise, is a key player in the Rangers takeover.

Hi MAHE:
First class lead article, as per.
Unfortunately, there were quite a few in the broadcast industry who reacted openly with unalloyed glee at the Munich scrambled winner. Assholes like Cundy, Boyd, and quite a few employed by the BBC. It reinforced and brought home to me the extreme bitterness with which Celtic’s exploits are regarded.
What sad lives these bawbags have.

Decent lead article as usual, but fear with money mentioned, it can turn into a anti board debate very quickly imo?

Personally, don’t take that much notice really, as not worth getting wound up, over matters where we are never going to have any real say upon.

Main focus from them, is upon giving us a product within a team, that we can be proud to support and prepared to buy into.
In that regards, I would say that they have provided, even if the level of untrustworthy still exists after the sabotage of the 10iar season.

We will possibly remain in a situation within the club, where improvements can be made, such is the nature of the footballing landscape as it currently is.

But main focus for myself anyway, will be upon our players moreso than anything else.
With that, comes the issues upon forming a squad, with players able to fulfil their roles within the squad?

We never got 16 CL quality players within our squad this season, proving costly to ourselves eventually.
In turn the 8 homegrown quota rule, remains a growing challenge, especially with Calmac and forrest at the back end of there careers now, and potential replacements some distance away at present also.
Had my doubts about only 5 midfield players within our squad, actually being enough, to match the demands for ourselves?
Again an injury to Paulo proved very costly in a massive CL match.

Yet, we still have to form a decent rotation policy in place for these CL encounters.
Thought AJ was our best player over the course of the 2 games against bayern imo?
But was that also helped by having ralston available to rest AJ for such games?
And could possibly be looking at a similar situation next season with Tierney, so can totally understand why Rodgers wanted to keep hold of Taylor, but is schulpp prepared to potentially play a backup role now?

Luckily, we hope to be moving into an era, where a Glasgow Derby won’t be considered as within a top 10 game throughout the course of our season hopefully?
Yet we could be looking at potentially 20 mouth watering games to attract better quality players into our club, along with a stronger rotation policy for SPFL matches compared to CL?

So believe that squad building remains crucial for getting right, even with the knowledge of getting 25man squad players in position for ourselves, won’t be possible.
So improvements regarding balance within the overall squad exists, and hopefully will be improved upon and keeping unity within the squad intact?

Sounds straightforward enough, but putting into practice, especially with the amount of factors involved, isn’t going to be straightforward either.
With success for ourselves, will come at a cost, with the profiles of the individuals hugely increased by the level of the success gained.
That’s at playing terms moreso than the financial rewards that opens up to the individuals involved.

So already, believe that we could well be looking at one of the most complex transfer windows during the summer, and one that we don’t really want either imo?
Paul tisedale will potentially have to prove his worth for ourselves, especially with knowing what is already required, and the situation behind the scenes involving maybe certain individuals and there futures.
If this isn’t already in operation, even at this early stage, then can only conclude that an operation for failure is in place, and a salvage operation will be required during the summer imo?
Now should the squad process procedure be ignored, even now, then potential problems awaits for the future.
Was OK last summer, but left room for improvements.
Even now within the present, there are plenty of room for improvements.
Example being that 2 of our midfield players at least, will be required to start this weekend, after such efforts produced in bayern.
We still require better than that available, and looking like becoming a bigger change required for future campaigns also imo?

There is a book by John Powell SJ.

The secret was communication and SC offers the ability to share our individual thoughts and experiences.

Good points on a complex summer but signs are that players moved on because not good enough will be repeated in summer.

On focusing on football rather than back office I think there is plenty of room on SC for both.

My focus on back office and policy is that is where the process starts to provide the players and their quality that is the basis for the football focus discussions.

Good to see you regularly posting, as found such sites great therapy for a troubled mindset myself.

We already have plenty in reserve, regarding players having value, even if not within the plans of Rodgers at present.

So any shortfall regarding income from CL and europa league, is nearly covered in that regards alone, I would say imo?

The issue still exists with quality required between the levels of SPFL and CL?

Won’t be in a position to buy ready-made CL players.
So as its our biggest bargaining tool to attract the players we are hopefully looking to attract, will involve an even more complex market to overcome for there services for ourselves.
Even then, they will potentially have to be developed into CL players for ourselves also?
So therefore we do offer a potential great career opportunity, even if it may be fairly short lived with ourselves.

So keeping stability in place, is potentially going to become a bigger task for ourselves.
Yet we still need the likes of your ralston, scales, Taylor and Welsh as examples of the quality limits required within the overall squad, in order to keep SPFL stability intact for ourselves.

Course the lesser talented players, tend to get overlooked by there roles within our squad.
But as a support maybe a bit better understanding of the importance of there roles within our overall squad, should start being considered moreso on our behalf, to help matters also imo?

It’s all about the youth development and our youth coaching.

This is where we can afford to compete and attracting the best coaching and set up.

The jobs for the boys must end if we want to progress and we need to development our own players and ensure we play them.

Until we get the best youth coaches in, we will always be behind our europen rivals.

The only reason we found KT and Calmac was because of Ronnie D, he gave them their chance because this is how clubs on the continent work.

When was the last time we actually brought through a young prospect and he played continuously for two seasons?

Johnno
February 20, 2025 4:40 pm

Absolutely spot on.
We still have a situation where 8 players have to be homegrown for a CL squad.

A third of our squad, yet providing very little towards a CL campaign.
Take calmac out of the equation in bayern, then a third of a squad are actually able to produce nothing, within the higher profile matches of CL.

This hasn’t just developed either, and has been the case for numerous campaigns now, with reducing Scottish involvement.

Tierney and calmac will hopefully help matters next season, along with McCowan developing more so, for Rodgers to trust more at CL level matches.

Ralston and forrest at a push for potential changes, or having to step up if injuries were to impact ourselves in squad depth and availability.

Murray maybe replacing Welsh, but again is he able to get to a standard of being considered to start SPFL matches, to allow for more squad rotation?

So at present maybe 6 of 8 positions could be already filled with next season in mind.
Yet 2 still required, without knowing who and where they might fit into our squad?
We still aren’t able to keep hold of our promising youngsters upon this issue, which is becoming a bigger concern with Calmac and forrest at the back end of there careers also.

Squad building with a third of it getting overlooked is potentially a massive problem brewing, and yet nothing really in operation to combat it either, is what I’m currently seeing?

You are on the same song sheet as SFSA Chairman whose hobby horse is grassroots football and the failure of SFA to get more boys involved and coached to a level Celtic can harvest from.

That means going abroad which is what Celtic are doing but the root problem in terms of being Scottish to meet UEFA rules is at grassroots which is outside Celtic direct control unless they channel some cash to SFA or SG to help reduce costs met by volunteer parents like my stepson to rent pitches, hire referees (for kids old enough to play 11 a side ) and better coaches.
Football pitches in EK used to be fully booked at weekends for guys of all ages to play in matches but no longer.
Less pitches booked at volunteers expense to develop a smaller number of players.

An area of SFA reform SFSA are raising with SG under Round Table arrangement.

People can laugh at the zombies, but the people that own the 49’ers are serious players, and wouldn’t allow their name to be bandied about, if there wasn’t some truth to it.

The NFL is by far the most profitable sports league in the world. And even though the 49’er are considered a small market franchise, the 49’ers owners are presently looking at selling a 10% stake based on a $9 Billion valuation.

The guys that own NFL teams make money. Period. And they dont typically takes chances unless they think they are going to make some serious coin.

If they do get involved, they will kick ass and regularize Scottish football, and turn it into a real profit generating business … at least for Sevco.

Celtic have a huge financial advantage, but as we have seen over the past decade, seem unwilling to use that advantage to put too much distance between the two halves of the OF. As PityM and others have suggested, there has been a decade where Celtic could have and should have been building up a decent program, but didn’t.

If the American investment is true, they will come in and do what is necessary to make money… and will use their political (closely tied to Trump) and financial clout to make that happen …and if that means improving the junior programs, etc., that’s what they will do …. and if Celtic aren’t ahead of the game, or at least prepared to move with the tide, Celtic will get left behind.

I know the motto of Celtic and their fans is ‘why do today what you can put off til tomorrow’, but if they continue on that path, and the stories of this investment are true, they will face a much greater peril than simply the monumental embarassment of a shit team managed by one of the worst managers in history in Steve Gerrard wiping the floor with them.

I’ve mentioned before that while I think we have a decent team,we don’t have a good enough squad. And that five midfielders would never be enough to see us through a full season.

These problems existed in AP’s day too, though maybe to a lesser extent. I certainly brought it up when he was here. BR’s first two windows did nothing for us,probably pushed us back a bit. But we definitely need to improve and expand the squad AND the first team. And it needs to be done in the summer, not over two or three windows.

We have been very fortunate with injuries and suspensions this season, but that cannot last. I dread to think of how we would deal with another couple to key players.

BP, clean your mouth out😂😂😂

Johnno, we need to move on this ASAP and the question should be who do we steal and from where?

Belgium, France, Dutch or Spain?

I would prefer a French coach, with contacts in Spain and Belgium. He’s out there we just need to find him.

But we also need to invest heavily in what new technologies are out there to help collate data analysis and action plans. We need to become the new Ajax, who have produced another 16 year old first team player from their production line.

It’s all there we just need to work hard and get on with it.

Auldheid, I’m sure the english would happily pay celtic youth teams evey week.

We seem to think that we need to stay in Scotland.

Why, Scotland is tiny in comparison to other countries and we have the whole of the UK and Ireland to play games.

The biggest risk to making R2ngers as or more profitable than Celtic is one which Celtic have never had to think about since 2012

R2ngers under 49ers could turn in a profit at EL level at little risk from Celtic.

After paying for R2ngers shares how much more needed to buy EL or CL players, at what cost and at what risk and how will 49ers get around UEFA sustainability rules or even want to if it makes R2ngers profitable enough.
If we think nothing can stop them nothing will, but if Celtic take a stand then it’s a different ball game.
