The Best A Man Can Get

Morning, all.

We have had some positive news from Celtic in the last few days. The club have finally reached agreement with Maloney and Fozzie to stay in position for next season and possibly beyond. We’ve also lured Ross Grant away from Hearts as our new Set Pieces Coach. He is being flagged up as a replacement for Gavin Strachan, who apparently was our previous set pieces coach. Nae offence, but none of us were aware we even had a set pieces coach, and most of us just wondered what Strachan did.

I’ll mark that one down then as a much needed improvement.

Meanwhile, all of the chatter on Timternet is about who will leave and how much we will get for them. Little talk of incoming, you’ll notice. I don’t actually think this is expectation management as much as I think it’s a sign of just how dysfunctional our club is. We are always on the front foot when someone waves a tenner in front of us, but we’ve ducked into the toilets when a signing opportunity arises.

Today is the last day of the financial year. That means that any signings made from now on come out of next year’s balance sheet, while any in the last fortnight would have come out of the current year-a balance sheet which we will discover in about ten weeks time has been holed below the waterline. This is not because our beloved custodians went out and spent big to support an assault on Europe. They did the opposite, stripped what they could and pocketed the cash while undermining the highly successful man in charge. The fans initiated a merchandise boycott as a result, hence the holed balance sheet. The club responded by firing that highly successful manager, sending an SOS to a club legend last appointed over a quarter of a century previously, then bumped him off too in favour of some guy from a Canadian convent school or something.

Cost us about £8m to hire and fire that yin. Plus 12 points and a league cup. And a showing up against the huns at Celtic Park. In our own home, to paraphrase a certain well known line.

Thankfully, sense prevailed. Back comes the veteran, et voila double in the bag. Surely we won’t make all those mistakes again. Last season, by popular acclaim, saw the worst squad since 1994, but we scraped through. It’s obvious the squad needs a major rebuild. We’ve got the money, etc. Naw. The only chat is about who is leaving and how much we will get for them.

This isn’t because the Celtic fans WANT to sell a single one of them, btw. It’s for two reasons. One, we know that’s how the club works. Two, we know that’s how the club works.

There is a well-worked pattern in off-field Scottish football, designed to soothe the fevered brows of the gullible amongst the support. One is that R2ngers win The Pre-season Cup, much coveted by their predecessors, and the other is that a couple of weeks later, Celtic parade The Glorious Balance Sheet. There are mugs amongst each support who have fallen for these ruses year after year, and while the occasional few finally come to their senses and go public without an apology for previously supporting a rotten regime, others still cling to the conviction that Brendan Rodgers is to blame for everything.

Apparently it was his fault that Nancy was hired, because Tisdale insisted on the appointment being made and Rodgers insisted on Tisdale being appointed. I’m going to leave that hanging just there, in the vain hope that someone can make some sense of it. That Rodgers phoned the club and asked for a useless twat to be appointed as his boss.

My article last week was titled tumbleweed. You tell me what has changed. There is nothing coming from our club that makes me think that we have intentions of building a side capable of competing in the Champions League. Yes, of course there is an outside possibility that the squad we have on 4 September will be good enough for Scotland, but that is a mile short of what a club like ours should be aiming for. There’s a list a mile long of clubs from leagues like ours who punch much heavier than we do with similar resources. Most of them sell their stars for more than us-but they reinvest. And they know exactly who and what they are looking for with that reinvestment. Every time.

Every time.

Every time they want better. More expensive than previously. A higher bar. More potential. All the things we try to avoid in our own race to the bottom. Aye, we’ll sign potential, we’ve signed plenty of it. If you judge potential as useless elsewhere, but cannae possibly be as bad with us.

Think about that one. All those players with “potential” that we’ve signed. All those millions wasted, but we wouldn’t go the extra £100k to get a proper player over the line.

There’s literally dozens of them. I’ll start you off with Mo Bangura and Amido Balde.

Have fun naming others. Me, I’m off to hide the razor blades.

BAD

I can’t convey how angry I was when I approached the Program sellers stall outside CP the first time Sevco came. I glanced at the front cover, hoping for the ultimate GIRUY and it felt like a kick in the balls!

I felt like kicking the stall over but had to remind myself it wasn’t the program sellers fault.

The lad from Morocco has a long way to go before you can compare him to Pirlo.Mate Pirlo was a world class player who maybe looked like he strolled about but was faster and sharper than you maybe think.he was lightning at changing direction and had an amazing passing range.he controlled most games.he also produced probably the 2nd best Panenka(after the original) of all time against Big Joe.Pirlo was one of the best players of his generation and was a joy to watch imho.
Hail hail mate
—————————
Hi Drew:
No issues with any of that. I wasn’t clear. I meant to write that he was strolling about as if he thought he was Pirlo.

Who knows how far he will go, but at 18, he looks supremely comfortable on the World Cup stage. And he has really filled out since I saw him with the U-23s. Commentary over here is that both Arsenal and Liverpool are trying to sign him.

Mexico-Ecuador game could be a doozy tonight.

Ecuadorans will not be happy. Mexico fans banged drums and blew horns all night outside their hotel after a nine hour trip from their previous location, including airport delays, and horrendous traffic congestion in Mexico City holding them up for hours.

Norway 1-0 Nusa

Billy,

The only way I could deal with what happened, was to keep reminding myself these decisions were made by people who are just the custodians, just passing through. (Taking their time about it!)

Doesn’t this raise a rather obvious question though? One that I have pondered many times …
How many guys (And gals) felt that exact same way but chose to just walk away completely? From that day I haven’t bought a top of a ticket, I just couldn’t look myself in the mirror and kid on it wasn’t happening.

I still get angry at the thought of the Desmond’s shrugging their shoulders when told about the hundreds of lifelong fans that left the game and team. Bet none of them lost a minute’s sleep, eh?

There’s also a special place in hell reserved for those that spend their days doing their bidding on sites like these ..I can’t stand the creeps! That’s why my hair stands on end when I see\hear anyone trying to defend the rats.

Although I didn’t need reminding, it proved to me what the team still means to me. Being honest though, the feeling of disappointment has been overwhelming at times. Sickened is definitely the best word to describe how I’ve felt since.

Hi San Luis:
The players say they feel more comfortable in these specially manufactured strips and don’t sweat as much. It’s a detail, but 5 of the African teams ordered them.

It’s a psychological thing, but I know I played better when I really liked the strip.

Many years ago, I used to play 5-a-side against the ‘Lynch mob’, including Andy, Simon and Tam. To me, Big Tam was the best of them, but he only played once for Celtic, in a charity event. He told me “He felt about 10 feet tall when he pulled on that jersey.”

You are right about fitba players and coaches, but addressing details doesn’t hurt.

1-1 Ivory Coast. Ex-Sevco Amad Diallo.

Theres the really long one that gets headed back into the centre for an incoming runner.
Theres the really short one that gets flicked on for a runner at the back post.

Hi Dubaibhoy:
This will be shorter than original.
It’s one thing to instruct players where the ball should land. It’s quite another thing to coach them how to strike it properly, as many have developed poor habits. Engels, for example, hits the ball as if he has a club foot. 2 years of taking free kicks, no goals, one on target, and it hit the bar and went over. ( Check clip below at around 3.20. Look how awkwardly he strikes the ball. Then compare with Messi’s casual easy practice swing in the next clip.)

Engels takes corners that repeatedly hit the first defender, are caught by a keeper who doesn’t even have to move, or are wellied beyond the last man into touch. Why on earth do we let him take set pieces? He occasionally gets one right, but his percentages are ridiculously poor.

Forrest has never, in his lengthy career, been given responsibility to hit a corner into the box.
We let him take very short ones, and that’s it. Just extraordinary for a winger.

Throw ins are schoolboy standard and have been for years. I expect to see immediate vast improvement here, because it is an easy fix, and has been taught at SFA coaching courses for decades.

Then there is our old bugaboo. Defending crosses to the far post. Look at how easily Shankland beat AJ last game of the season ( 1:20 in on clip ). And it’s not for the first time that Shankland has done this at Celtic Park, but we never learned. I’ll be pissed off if he replicates this for Sevco next season.
Our set piece coach may shortly be advising improvements in personnel, to make his job easier.

I don’t like Haaland when he plays for Man City (guess it’s the Man City thing), but I really like him playing for Norway, puts in a great shift. The earlier mention of Pirlo brought back some nostalgia, a very special talent: he also said some very nice things about Celtic. He is one of the all time greats IMO.
