The Best A Man Can Get
Morning, all.
We have had some positive news from Celtic in the last few days. The club have finally reached agreement with Maloney and Fozzie to stay in position for next season and possibly beyond. We’ve also lured Ross Grant away from Hearts as our new Set Pieces Coach. He is being flagged up as a replacement for Gavin Strachan, who apparently was our previous set pieces coach. Nae offence, but none of us were aware we even had a set pieces coach, and most of us just wondered what Strachan did.
I’ll mark that one down then as a much needed improvement.
Meanwhile, all of the chatter on Timternet is about who will leave and how much we will get for them. Little talk of incoming, you’ll notice. I don’t actually think this is expectation management as much as I think it’s a sign of just how dysfunctional our club is. We are always on the front foot when someone waves a tenner in front of us, but we’ve ducked into the toilets when a signing opportunity arises.
Today is the last day of the financial year. That means that any signings made from now on come out of next year’s balance sheet, while any in the last fortnight would have come out of the current year-a balance sheet which we will discover in about ten weeks time has been holed below the waterline. This is not because our beloved custodians went out and spent big to support an assault on Europe. They did the opposite, stripped what they could and pocketed the cash while undermining the highly successful man in charge. The fans initiated a merchandise boycott as a result, hence the holed balance sheet. The club responded by firing that highly successful manager, sending an SOS to a club legend last appointed over a quarter of a century previously, then bumped him off too in favour of some guy from a Canadian convent school or something.
Cost us about £8m to hire and fire that yin. Plus 12 points and a league cup. And a showing up against the huns at Celtic Park. In our own home, to paraphrase a certain well known line.
Thankfully, sense prevailed. Back comes the veteran, et voila double in the bag. Surely we won’t make all those mistakes again. Last season, by popular acclaim, saw the worst squad since 1994, but we scraped through. It’s obvious the squad needs a major rebuild. We’ve got the money, etc. Naw. The only chat is about who is leaving and how much we will get for them.
This isn’t because the Celtic fans WANT to sell a single one of them, btw. It’s for two reasons. One, we know that’s how the club works. Two, we know that’s how the club works.
There is a well-worked pattern in off-field Scottish football, designed to soothe the fevered brows of the gullible amongst the support. One is that R2ngers win The Pre-season Cup, much coveted by their predecessors, and the other is that a couple of weeks later, Celtic parade The Glorious Balance Sheet. There are mugs amongst each support who have fallen for these ruses year after year, and while the occasional few finally come to their senses and go public without an apology for previously supporting a rotten regime, others still cling to the conviction that Brendan Rodgers is to blame for everything.
Apparently it was his fault that Nancy was hired, because Tisdale insisted on the appointment being made and Rodgers insisted on Tisdale being appointed. I’m going to leave that hanging just there, in the vain hope that someone can make some sense of it. That Rodgers phoned the club and asked for a useless twat to be appointed as his boss.
My article last week was titled tumbleweed. You tell me what has changed. There is nothing coming from our club that makes me think that we have intentions of building a side capable of competing in the Champions League. Yes, of course there is an outside possibility that the squad we have on 4 September will be good enough for Scotland, but that is a mile short of what a club like ours should be aiming for. There’s a list a mile long of clubs from leagues like ours who punch much heavier than we do with similar resources. Most of them sell their stars for more than us-but they reinvest. And they know exactly who and what they are looking for with that reinvestment. Every time.
Every time.
Every time they want better. More expensive than previously. A higher bar. More potential. All the things we try to avoid in our own race to the bottom. Aye, we’ll sign potential, we’ve signed plenty of it. If you judge potential as useless elsewhere, but cannae possibly be as bad with us.
Think about that one. All those players with “potential” that we’ve signed. All those millions wasted, but we wouldn’t go the extra £100k to get a proper player over the line.
There’s literally dozens of them. I’ll start you off with Mo Bangura and Amido Balde.
Have fun naming others. Me, I’m off to hide the razor blades.

Im on nightshift and your queerys dominating my night 😃 Been doin my head in..cant find a goal Scifo scored against england(sorry Mags).i then thought it might have been Paolo Futre of Portugal who also destroyed england but nope he never scored either 😬 anyway killed a couple hours.cheers
Bosnia going for it by taking off Dzeko, then Katic and Kolasinac, but doesn’t seem to be paying off.
US score again, but offsidio.
Well apparently a bid has been made, I guess it had to happen someday.
“According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Eintracht Frankfurt, Celtic and Stuttgart are bidding for Nobel Mendy.
Mendy was believed to have been on the verge of joining the Rangers last summer. But it collapsed in the final steps. Personal terms were believed to have been agreed beforehand and was not thought to be the issue.”
One guy on a podcast nailed it today in saying that when you look at the players linked they have Martins fingers all over them being big physical specimens that can play, plus the market/pricerange we are generally linked to is a quality over quantity approach which again is a Martin trait.
This defender some places are saying we bid for is confusing because he is left footed. He’s described as left fullback or left sided centreback, we’ve got two of those in Scales and Tierney. The Trusty replacement is one possible theory but here’s another.
He replaces Scales might be on the cards.
He replaces KT and Martin putting a beast at left back? Might be why we knocked back Scirrachi.
Or,,,don’t say it in public,,we go 3-5-2 with KT as left wingback? Could that be the sign.
Trusty leaves, we go 3-5-2 mixing and matching two right footers in CCV and Nawrocki, two left footers in Scales and new guy, plus Dane Murray as backup? Wouldn’t put it past him if he’s on a budget.
The bottom line though is that the subject of the apparent bid is 21 therefore kerching, if that trajectory keeps rising. It also needs pointing out that we are the stepping stone and European football will hopefully be the clincher.
It also needs pointing out that he had previously (last year) agreed terms with R2ngers then failed the medical.
I’m not going to speculate.
He then went on to have an excellent breakout season in La Liga, and cemented himself as a mainstay at the heart of the Rayo Vallecano defense.
Hope we get him. Sounds doable as he wants Europe and the EPL.
Hail Hail
US 2-0 Ex-Sevco Tillman. Game over, even with 10 men.
Had an inevitability about it.
Bosnians have 7 minutes to save the game, but it looks like US vs Belgium.
It has been ridiculously easy for the US.

Maybe Gerry was thinking about this fantastic goal AGAINST Belgium? It’s uncanny how similar it is to Maradona’s.

IQ4,
Good to see the actual stats. If he’s 4.5 Euro, is okay with wages, I don’t see the problem.
Afterall Scotland isn’t a shithole like Germany 😉
Hail Hail
Just seen Harry Kanes dive.
I’m forced to wonder if diving has been ordered by his win at all costs manager.
IQ4,
I read that first comment and said to myself thats the general run of play but I still retain faith they will go out and get him some player’s he wants.
Hail Hail

Kane needs very little encouragement

Guys like Ox and Kel are the wrong side of 25 (With no chance of selling at some point in the future) for this board to have any interest in retaining them for this season. What they offer the team, or what they’d accept in wages, doesn’t come into it with this board. Penny-pinching boards won’t consider guys around 30 who’ve earned big money prior, cause they represent money only going in one direction, out!
We will happily give new contracts to lads like McCowan, Yang and Scales, as they are on peanuts and still might generate some income at some point down the line! Again, ability ISN’T the no1 consideration, other factors matter long before that ..cause, let’s be honest, we are not a football team first.
I keep reading how we didn’t replace lads like Kuhn and Kyogo etc. Jesus wept, I’m still waiting on us replacing Broony!!
Our board have a very difficult task- it’s not easy giving the impression you want to build a good team, all the while you’re doing everything in your power to make sure your league rivals have a chance to snatch your crown ..not easy.
Yeah, it’s a tough balancing act.
You know the club will want to be sure money (Lots of it) is incoming before they commit to ANY going out. That will probably mean we fuck up another summer because, as I sqy, building a great team is not our priority, our priority is to end the summer by adding more zeros to the bank balance.
With 10s of millions in the bank, and the fans again holding up their end of the bargain, you might expect the club to show a tiny bit of ambition in the market, try and attain a better class of player, but instead we get lads like Liam Scales (As wholehearted as he is) as our no1 centre back choice! Oh, it didn’t take a lot of consideration to get that deal sorted, eh? Liam won’t be demanding 20k a week – Happy daze!
We will end the summer a good bit richer than we were before it started, and that is this board’s real goal, not the team or its abilities.
Gotta make sure Mr disgusting is in with a shot of being successful 👍
Drew67 and Iniq……I now think I am confused, I think INIQ is correct it must be that brilliant Saudi goal I’m thinking of. Age plays tricks with memory, and I have lots of age and little memory. Apologies to all.
