Martin O’Neill

Morning, all.

The big breaking news story for every Celtic minded person yesterday was that our legendary manager, Martin O’Neill, was admitted to hospital to undergo what has been termed a “small procedure.” No further details are available, and I think it would be intrusive and wrong for any of us to speculate further.

Martin is recovering in hospital, where he is likely to remain for a few days. We wish him and his family well for the future.

Haste ye back, Martin.

I’m very confused.

These are 3rd round ties. The BBC stats aren’t showing any VAR officials in the line ups yet Motherwell got a VAR penalty award. I’m pretty sure there’s no VAR in the huns game as it’s never been mentioned and I think there was a possible red for them in the first half.

2-1 away isn’t the worst result for the zombies. Gives them a chance to overturn it at home. But it means they won’t be 100% focused on the game this weekend. And even this early, they can’t afford to drop more points this weekend

Poles are poor so would expect Huns to overturn deficit.
Game highlighted how the poorer leagues in Europe are struggling with quality gap.

I was listening to Clyde there. Deek’s honeymoon period is over. Some of them have seen enough already! 😀

I’m not particularly surprised – they are absolute shite! I reckon this team will pick them off at Ibrox. The hun hordes will urge them forward and this team will exploit that.

The Scottish FA has scrapped the Key Match Incident panel – its independent panel that reviewed major refereeing decisions in the Premiership.

Separate to the KMI panel, SFA head of refereeing Willie Collum will continue to provide monthly video explanations of key decisions

Benfica who are decent making Hearts look out of their depth.
Scottish football needs to address its slide to irrelevance.
But expect blazers to sit on fat arses and do nothing.

I know it’s a bit early to come to a conclusive judgement but when watching the newly purchased McInnes hun superstars. I got a feeling of deja vu that I also had when witnessing Caxinho’s, Warburton’s, Beale’s, Clement’s and Martin’s superstars.

Hearts chasing too much when holding position would be more effective.
Benfica 2-0 from corner.
Losing their set piece coach to us affected them.
Hopefully the guy will improve our set piece ability this season.

But the descriptions of their talents by SMSM as in previous times look like the blue tinted specs aren’t accurate.

Watch when a Benfica winger or midfielder starts running towards goal. He has 5 or 6 of his team mates running with him.

Exciting, entertaining football, compared with the slow horseshoe of death we watch so frequently.

The coaching in Scotland is generally negative and poor.
Too feart to commit men forward because teams not organised to deal with any kind of turnover.
When Celtic turn possession over we react like a version of Wacky Races.

There was a very interesting debate on Radio Clyde last night. They had a guest on discussing the impact of Brexit on English teams due to their inability to source young players from EU countries. Since we left, EPL teams have raided Scottish teams instead. Over 100 have been lured South but only 6 or so have made the step up – such as Doak and Gilmour.

Most end up either dropping down to League One down South or come back up the road and try again here. The average wage in League One is £7k per week whereas they would be lucky to get £k800-£1k at the likes of Killie or Falkirk etc. The

It was quite a depressing listen and does make you wonder at the point of Academies up here given the lack of opportunities for young players in Scotland with what Tony Watt and Alex Rae described as a dreadful current SFA set up allied to the cross border raids hoovering up anyone who looks half decent.

The panel didn’t seem to have any idea what can be done to improve matters.

A player is no longer “cup-tied” in the old sense for UEFA club competitions simply because they have played in qualifying rounds.
The change is that:
A player can represent two different clubs in UEFA competitions in the same season, subject to UEFA registration rules.
Playing for a club in Champions League, Europa League or Conference League qualifying rounds does not automatically prevent a later move to another club and playing for them in UEFA competition.
However, there are still restrictions:
A player cannot normally be registered by two clubs in the same UEFA competition phase in a way that breaches UEFA rules.
Registration deadlines and squad-list rules still apply.
A club must have a place available on its UEFA squad list.
So, for example:
Player A plays Champions League qualifying for Club X.
Club Y signs him.
Club Y reaches UEFA competition later in the season.
Player A is not automatically barred from playing for Club Y.
The old “cup-tied” rule (where appearing for one club in Europe blocked you for another) was effectively removed by UEFA in recent years to make transfers easier and reflect the modern transfer market.

August 6, 2026 9:33 pm

Billy Bhoy,

The majority of these players are recruited to provide padding for the academies for the one or two real prospects who will eventually provide a £20m profit. There is never any intention of developing them. If they do then great but it’s a side effect
