Kilmarnock vs Celtic – Matchday 2

Sunday afternoon brings our second competitive outing of the 26/27 campaign as the Hoops hope to once again take all three points on offer to stay in or around the SPL.

This is a strange match to preview as its shrouded in uncertainty. Shaun has been this weeks temporary manager and he may or may not have Martin beside him in the dugout for the tie. In a normal week one imagines they would have analyzed our opening performance and made decisions based on their conclusion after watching the game back, but thats been thrown on the scrap heap by the unexpected illness which forced Martin into hospital and under the scapel. Given this unexpected turn of events our ex winger has been left to his own devices and presumably will try and put his own imprint into our style of play, he may even have picked the team himself.

I haven’t a clue what to expect. I’m unsure how exactly the shoehorn the two strikers into the team without Duran being wasted out wide unless we rip up 4-3-3 for either 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 which both have their own pitfalls. 3-5-2 sees KT and AJ not playing or not playing to their strengths, 4-4-2 would weaken the middle of the park and leave last years top scorer Nygren in limbo, and losing his goals just to play the two strikers together would be an act of folly in my opinion. Fixing our dilemma was surely setback by the unexpected illness, now its Shauns turn to try, or heads could just mind the shop and change nothing hoping the 6 days training together helps everyone gel and improve.

Who plays as our right winger best enjoy it while they can as they will soon be second fiddle to the incoming Hasseim Hassan and if it is Duran again he can breathe a sigh of relief that he’s unlikely to play that flank again.

Kasper Hogh admitted he’s getting used to real grass and theres a dollop of irony in realizing that last seasons pitch would probably suit him better, but the images I’ve seen show a quality playing surface and I’m glad Killie have finally joined the 21st century in forking out for grass. The weatherman says it will rain before and after the match with a two hour break coinciding with play, so it will be a beautiful but slick surface come Sunday afternoon which should in theory benefit the better footballers, and thats clearly us.

We all await the clash with eager anticipation and we all want to be watching when Hogh scores his first for his new club, lets hope its this weekend. I’m confident we have enough in the tank to win and next week shall see reinforcements arrive.

3 points please and another clean sheet would be nice.
Up The Hoops!

The media are running out of ways to describe our pathetic attempts at closing deals.
Today we are on the cusp of signing Hassan.
This would be a great job to have, as it’s impossible to feck up, no matter how poor your performance.

A few weeks ago I said something half joking.
(What’s that saying about what you say in jest?)
I’m now starting to believe I was right.
How many games did Jota, CCV and AJ play between them last season?
So, they each missed big chunks of the campaign, and they are among our highest earners too.
Still had to be paid to turn up and sit in the stand though, and that’s would have given the board stomach ulcers.
Lots of money for zero return, not the kind of deal our custodians like.

I’m sure you can see where I’m going here.

Did I ever tell you of the time I was fishing in the Clyde Estuary when my rod dipped almost into the water and nearly pulled me overboard ? I thought I had hooked a huge fish and had a massive struggle trying to get it to my boat. After an hour of heaving I looked up and saw The Waverley slowly approaching, so I started my outboard to get out of its way. As it got closer, the captain shouted at me through his tannoy to cut my line and let him get back on his course to Greenock. I’m sure I saw you on board, and that may be a true story. 😂😂

Also news on Michael Nicholson is that he will be around even less this season as he has beaten Kevin Bacon to the part of the Invisible Man3 in the upcoming movie.

I think KT would really suffer if we went 3-5-2 and played him as the left wingback of the 5. He doesn’t have the body to do that.
Left of the 3, yes, but then we lose his overlapping crosses.
AJ would be fine in a 3-5-2 but then whats the point in signing Hassan?
Its a big dilemma.

Mike in Toronto
August 8, 2026 10:09 pm

Mahe

you ask what is the point in signing Hassan?

what is the point? Is the key question.

There is no DoF, nor does there seem to be any plan for how the team is to play. it seems all football decisions are being made by DD or MON, the former who has no real football knowledge, and the latter is a short term rental, who in his pomp, never worried much about tactics. He was very much Brian Clough lite – a great motivator and a decent eye for a player, but never much of a tactician. It was buy good players and then ‘go out and show them how good you are’. (Maybe worked 50 years ago for Clough, and 25 years ago for MON), but not in the modern game (so may squeak by in the SPL, but won’t cut it in the Conference League, let alone the Champions League

and to get back to your question…there doesn’t seem to be a on field plan or identity with Celtic. It should be about building a team, a system, and finding players who fit together and complement each other. If that happens, success will follow and player values will increase, allowing players to be sold for a profit.

but Celtic seem to do it ass backwards.Celtic’s point is to buy players that they think they can resell for a profit, and then try to squish them into some semblance of a team. So they buy two strikers who play the same role, and a winger ( if you are right about Hassan) who has scored 5 goals in 4 seasons. There doesn’t seem to be much thought to building a team, or how these players are going to fit together.

now, as long as you are buying even half decent players, you will win the SPL more often than not. But if your ambition goes beyond being one inch better than the zombies, then Celtic’s approach – their point, if you will – fails miserably

i would actually like to see the two play together, in a 442, or 4411 style. But they seem to be targeting wingers, which would suggest more of the same old 433, hoping to replicate the goal scoring wide play of Jota or Kuhn.

either way, the midfield is still a massive problem.

went to the affiliation meeting with the board last night. Got a list of a few things that were brought up for anyone that’s interested

Representatives for Celtic were:
Mark Hargreaves (Head of safety, security and operations)

George Campbell (Head of legal and governance)

Chris McKay (Chief financial officer)

Michael Nicholson (Chief executive officer)

Brian Wilson (Interim Chairman)

JP Taylor (Head of supporter engagement)

Kevin McQuillan (Head of Commercial operations)

Paul M. (Head of Business operations)

They want 3-4 new players in before the qualifier

Accept that communication hasn’t been good enough and they’re looking to improve

Told us to not believe everything in media cause there’s players we’ve been linked with that they’ve never even heard of.

They were asked what happened with Sarachi. Again, said that we shouldn’t believe that the deal was as good as what was put in the media. If it was that good, we’d have signed him. Also mentioned that if O’Neill really wanted him then he would have signed.

Just because we have money in the bank doesn’t mean we can spend it all. There’s UEFA laws in place that mean you can only spend what you earn on a year to year basis. If we breach these laws, we will get fines and if we continue getting fined we’ll be kicked out of Europe

Someone asked about Desmond’s Statement on Rodgers and if the rest of the board gave it a thumbs up. They said that Desmond felt he had to get his point across. They were then asked if it’s normal for a shareholder in a PLC to put out statements like that on a main channel. Chris McKay said that it has happened with other PLCs in the past, gave easyJet as an example

They were asked why Brian Wilson, who’s been interim chairman since 1 January still hasn’t been replaced. They said they’re currently in the process of finding replacements for both Tom Allison and Peter Lawell but it takes time. Brian Wilson intended on stepping down at last AGM but after everything with Rodgers he couldn’t

They were asked if Paul Tisdale has been replaced. We’ve been told that there has been 5 or 6 new data analytics people brought in. People then asked why this hasn’t been communicated to the support?

They were asked about treatment of fans at away matches, especially Motherwell and Ibrox. Hargreaves’s contradicted himself on this one, he never gave much of an answer on Motherwell but said for Rangers fans leaving Celtic park early at the end of last season, that was a Police decision. Whereas he said that the decisions made in the set up for us getting into Ibrox, that was down to his counterpart at Rangers

Someone asked why our transfers always seem reactionary rather than planning ahead. Nicholson says that’s not necessarily the case, started using guys like Kühn, Nygren and Tierney as players we identified in the January then signed in the summer. Reassured us there is planning going on.

Someone then asked if we have the same plans in place for a manager, as last season it really never looked that way. They said last season was exceptional circumstances, they never expected Rodgers to leave and then never expected Nancy to be away that quickly.

They’re in the process of implementing digital season tickets. Members of buses said that they have members who have struggled with the digital tickets at Hampden and this would be no use to them. They then said this would be implemented in a hybrid way where you could have a physical card if required or just digitally on your phone. It is being trialed this season with staff members.

They were asked why ticket office opening hours are only 11am-2pm when people work and are unable to make it up during these hours. We were told that footfall wasn’t high enough so it isn’t worth having it open any longer than these hours. Someone suggested setting something up in the superstore where people can buy tickets in there.

Someone then asked why the prices for food inside the stadium are so expensive? They said this is down to the company they use having such a short timeframe to maximise their profits. For example, Greggs are open everyday getting money through the door whereas a few hours on a match day is their only chance to gain money. Also put it down to wanting best quality of food as possible.

They want to freshen the stadium up with it being 30 years old, spoke about how good the stadium at the World Cup were and how we now need to try modernise Celtic park. Invested a lot into Barrowfield, Lennoxtown and number 7 restaurant

That’s what I’ve been sent tonight. Can’t say to it’s veracity

I didn’t need the second coming of Martin O’Neill to be reminded of how good a manager he is, or how important he is in our history. I’ve always rated him as second only to Jock Stein. He took a club which had finished a whopping 21 points behind the huns, added the type of player that suited his particular style to a surprising number of good players who were already there. He broke the arrogant wee Dutchman in the Ibrox dugout and trashed the reputations of their highly expensive players.

He gave us back our pride at a time when we needed exactly that, gave us back our confidence and rebuilt our reputation in Europe.

He certainly deserves more than to be dismissed as capable “only” of the occasional motivational prematch speech.

August 9, 2026 8:08 am

MON is huge to the success we had last season. No other Manager was winning a Double with that squad. None . He’s beyond brilliant.

The trouble with MON is his age. There’s no getting away from it- a 75yr old should not be leading the club from the dugout/or the hospital bed! His health in the long term is not going to get any better, not at his age.

Nancy was a punt that, brave as it was, was ill advised and we can put that on Tisdale for thinking MLS coaches can cut it in Europe. They can’t. Not yet anyway.

So , the next move has to be the correct one. Askou would have been perfect but he’s not in the old Bhoys network. So, it’s looking more and more like a Robbie Keane appointment as time goes on although Neil Lennon is still lurking in and around our ‘ owner’.

Very naive to think Martin is one dimensional, in that he leaves the technical stuff to others and just turns up with the motivational speech before KO. Coincidentally, there was the same myths said about Clough. You don’t achieve what these guys do-have, if all you can do is tell players how good they are prior to them leaving the dressing room.

Sure, they both are well known for making players play well above themselves, and they both surrounded themselves with guys they trusted to take training (Plus coach), but you don’t achieve what they have guys have by turning up for a quick 2min speech once a week.

You would get found out pretty quick if that was your only input, and all that you were capable of.

Look at Clough’s record over that period from 78-82 ..phenomenal. Gets Forest promoted to Div1, and then wins the league in their first season back! Takes on and beats the best English team of the last 100 years, then goes on to dominate the European cup ..back-to-back winners.

You really think he achieved that just by going into the dressing room, pre-game, for a 2min chat?

The secret to guys like this is treating players like adults, and convincing them they have your trust. They keep things simple, but they expect players to do their jobs without complicating things.

Ex-players make it sound like they barely ever seen them, but Clough and Martin are from the old school, when one man ran the whole football department ..in Clough’s case the whole club. If he’d have ran for mayor they’d have given him that job too.

Just glad England were too snobby to see what was right under their noses!

A simple thought.
If Mon decides not to return?
Would we be happy for Maloney and Fotheringham to be this season’s coaches?
For me definitely not as Maloney’s previous stints at Hibs and Wigan showed how poor and non productive his possession system is.
Fotheringham I have no idea as no track record of his coaching career.
Last year witnessed no real evidence of playing style improving with their coaching involvement.
